Formally Verified Liveness with Multiparty Session Types in Rocq

Abstract
Multiparty session types (MPST) offer a framework for the description of communication-based protocols involving multiple participants. In the top-down approach to MPST, the communication pattern of the session is described using a global type. Then the global type is projected on to a local type for each participant, and the individual processes making up the session are type-checked against these projections. Typed sessions possess certain desirable properties such as safety, deadlock-freedom and liveness. In this work, we present the first mechanised proof of liveness for synchronous multiparty session types in the Rocq Proof Assistant. Building on recent work, we represent global and local types as coinductive trees using the Paco library. We use a coinductively defined subtyping relation on local types together with another coinductively defined plain-merge projection relation relating local and global types. We then associate collections of local types, or local type environments, with global types using these projection and subtyping relations, and prove an operational correspondence between a local type environment and its associated global type. We utilise this association relation to prove the safety and liveness of associated local type environments and, consequently, the multiparty sessions typed by these environments. Besides clarifying the often informal proofs found in the MPST literature, our Rocq mechanisation also enables the certification of liveness properties of communication protocols. Our contribution amounts to around 14K lines of Rocq code, available at https://github.com/omerskeskin/mpstlive.

Forgetting Event Order in Higher-Dimensional Automata

Authors: Safa Zouari

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 380, 41st Annual Symposium on Logic in Computer Science (LICS 2026)

Abstract
Higher-dimensional automata (HDAs) provide a geometric model of true concurrency, yet their standard formulation encodes an artificial total order on events. This representational artifact causes a fundamental mismatch between the combinatorial structure of HDAs and their observable behaviour, leading to logical asymmetries and complicating the application of categorical tools. In this paper, we resolve this tension by developing a semantics for HDAs that is independent of event order, based on interval ipomsets (partially ordered multisets with interfaces) that preserve only precedence and concurrency. We prove that for any HDA, the traditional ST–trace of an execution path corresponds precisely to its associated interval ipomset. On the structural side, we show that the presheaf-theoretic presentation with an unordered base and the combinatorial presentation of symmetric HDAs are categorically isomorphic. Finally, by characterizing ST- and hereditary history-preserving (hhp) bisimulation via ipomset isomorphism, we provide a unified, order-free foundation for HDA semantics. Our results resolve several ambiguities in the literature: they provide the necessary path-category structure to canonically apply the Open Maps framework, eliminate representational artifacts in temporal and modal logics, and bridge systematic mismatches between HDAs and other models of concurrency such as Petri nets.

One-Clock Synthesis Problems

Abstract
We study a generalisation of Büchi-Landweber games to the timed setting. The winning condition is specified by a non-deterministic timed automaton, and one of the players can elapse time. We perform a systematic study of synthesis problems in all variants of timed games, depending on which player’s winning condition is specified, and which player’s strategy (or controller, a finite-memory strategy) is sought. As our main result we prove ubiquitous undecidability in all the variants, both for strategy and controller synthesis, already for winning conditions specified by one-clock automata. This strengthens and generalises previously known undecidability results. We also fully characterise those cases where finite memory is sufficient to win, namely existence of a strategy implies existence of a controller. All our results are stated in the timed setting, while analogous results hold in the data setting where one-clock automata are replaced by one-register ones.

Kamp Theorem for Pomset Languages of Higher Dimensional Automata

Authors: Emily Clement, Enzo Erlich, and Jérémy Ledent

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
Temporal logics are a powerful tool to specify properties of computational systems. For concurrent programs, Higher Dimensional Automata (HDA) are a very expressive model of non-interleaving concurrency. HDA recognize languages of partially ordered multisets, or pomsets. Recent work has shown that Monadic Second Order (MSO) logic is as expressive as HDA for pomset languages. In the case of words, Kamp’s theorem states that First Order (FO) logic is as expressive as Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). In this paper, we extend this result to pomsets. To do so, we first investigate the class of pomset languages that are definable in FO. As expected, this is a strict subclass of MSO-definable languages. Then, we define a Linear Temporal Logic for pomsets (LTL_Poms), and show that it is equivalent to FO.

Register-Bounded Synthesis from Constraint LTL

Authors: Nino Dauvier, Emmanuel Filiot, and Pierre-Alain Reynier

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
We consider synthesis problems from logical specifications over infinite data domains, expressed in the logic constraint LTL (CLTL), which extends LTL with predicates over an infinite set of data values. We consider register-bounded synthesis, where the goal is to automatically generate, if it exists, a transducer with r registers that realizes a given CLTL formula, where r is also given as input. We prove that CLTL register-bounded synthesis is 2ExpTime-c for various data domains such as any infinite set with equality, (ℚ, <), and (ℕ, <). For the latter domain, this contrasts with known undecidability results of (unbounded) register CLTL synthesis, by Bhaskar and Praveen. Lastly, we consider synthesis in a partial observation setting by extending CLTL with invisible variables.

ε-Distance via Lévy-Prokhorov Lifting

Authors: Josée Desharnais and Ana Sokolova

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
The most studied and accepted pseudometric for probabilistic processes is one based on the Kantorovich distance between distributions. It comes with many theoretical and motivating results, in particular it is the fixpoint of a given functional and defines a functor on (complete) pseudometric spaces. It is also the foundation for a categorical lifting of pseudometrics. Other notions of behavioural pseudometrics have also been proposed, one of them (ε-distance) based on ε-bisimulation. ε-Distance has the advantages that it is intuitively easy to understand, it relates systems that are conceptually close (for example, an imperfect implementation is close to its specification), and it comes equipped with a natural notion of ε-coupling. Finally, this distance is easy to compute. We show that ε-distance is also the greatest fixpoint of a functional and provides a functor. The latter is obtained by replacing the Kantorovich distance in the lifting functor with the Lévy-Prokhorov distance. In addition, we show that ε-couplings and ε-bisimulations have an appealing coalgebraic characterization.

Rational Lawvere Logic (Invited Paper)

Authors: Giorgio Bacci, Radu Mardare, Prakash Panangaden, and Gordon Plotkin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
We study Rational Lawvere logic (RL). This logic is defined over the extended positive reals with an algebraic structure combining the Lawvere quantale (with the reversed order on the extended reals and a sum as tensor) and a multiplicative quantale (with the usual order on the extended reals and a multiplication as tensor); together they provide a semiring structure. The logic is designed for complex quantitative reasoning, including sequents expressing inequalities between rational functions over the extended positive reals. We give a deduction system and demonstrate its expressiveness by deriving a classical result from probability theory relating the Kantorovich and total variation distances. Our deductive system is complete for finitely axiomatizable theories. The proof of completeness relies on the Krivine-Stengle Positivstellensatz. We additionally provide complexity results for both RL and its affine fragment AL. We consider two decision problems: the satisfiability of a set of sequents and whether a sequent follows from a finite set of sequent. We show that both problems lie in PSPACE for RL, and we give sharper complexity bounds for AL: the first problem is NP-complete, while the second is co-NP-complete.

On the Reachability Problem for Two-Dimensional Branching VASS

Authors: Clotilde Bizière, Thibault Hilaire, Jérôme Leroux, and Grégoire Sutre

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
Vectors addition systems with states (VASS), or equivalently Petri nets, are arguably one of the most studied formalisms for the modeling and analysis of concurrent systems. A central decision problem for VASS is reachability: whether there exists a run from an initial configuration to a final one. This problem has been known to be decidable for over forty years, and its complexity has recently been precisely characterized. Our work concerns the reachability problem for BVASS, a branching generalization of VASS. In dimension one, the exact complexity of this problem is known. In this paper, we prove that the reachability problem for 2-dimensional BVASS is decidable. In fact, we even show that the reachability set admits a computable semilinear presentation. The decidability status of the reachability problem for BVASS remains open in higher dimensions.

From Bisimulation to Traces: The Impact of Parallel Composition on Finite Bases

Authors: Rowin Versteeg, Valentina Castiglioni, and Bas Luttik

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
We consider process algebras with inaction, action prefix, non-deterministic choice and interleaving parallel composition modulo the behavioural equivalences in van Glabbeek’s linear time-branching time spectrum, and study the existence of finite bases (i.e., finite sound and complete axiomatisations) for these algebras. We prove that if the alphabet of actions is infinite and the behavioural equivalence is either simulation equivalence or trace equivalence, then a finite basis exists and is obtained by extending the known ground-complete axiomatisations for these behavioural equivalences. We prove that if the alphabet of actions is finite, then a finite basis does not exist for these equivalences. We also prove for all behavioural equivalences between ready simulation and completed traces there cannot exist a finite basis irrespective of the cardinality of the alphabet of actions (provided that it is non-empty). Finally, we prove that these results are maintained if the process algebra is extended with a constant for successful termination.

A Sound and Complete Characterization of Fair Asynchronous Session Subtyping

Authors: Mario Bravetti, Luca Padovani, and Gianluigi Zavattaro

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
Session types are abstractions of communication protocols enabling the static analysis of message-passing processes. Refinement notions for session types are key to support safe forms of process substitution while preserving their compatibility with the rest of the system. Recently, a fair refinement relation for asynchronous session types has been defined allowing the anticipation of message outputs with respect to an unbounded number of message inputs. This refinement is useful to capture common patterns in communication protocols that take advantage of asynchrony. However, while the semantic (à la testing) definition of such refinement is straightforward, its characterization has proved to be quite challenging. In fact, only a sound but not complete characterization is known so far. In this paper we close this open problem by presenting a sound and complete characterization of asynchronous fair refinement for session types. We relate this characterization to those given in the literature for synchronous session types by leveraging a novel labelled transition system of session types that embeds their asynchronous semantics.

Abstract
We verify the correctness of a variety of mutual exclusion algorithms through model checking. We look at algorithms where communication is via shared read/write registers, where those registers can be atomic or non-atomic. For the verification of liveness properties, it is necessary to assume a completeness criterion to eliminate spurious counterexamples. We use justness as completeness criterion. Justness depends on a concurrency relation; we consider several such relations, modelling different assumptions on the working of the shared registers. We present executions demonstrating the violation of correctness properties by several algorithms, and in some cases suggest improvements.

A State-Based O(m log n) Partitioning Algorithm for Branching Bisimilarity

Authors: Jan Friso Groote and David N. Jansen

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
We present a new O(mlog n) algorithm to calculate branching bisimulation equivalence, which is the finest commonly used behavioural equivalence on labelled transition systems that takes the internal action τ into account. This algorithm combines the simpler data structure of an earlier algorithm for Kripke structures (without action labels) with the memory-efficiency of a later algorithm partitioning sets of labelled transitions. It employs a particularly elegant four-way split of blocks of states, which refines a block under two splitters and isolates all new bottom states, simultaneously. Benchmark results show that this new algorithm outperforms the best known algorithm for branching bisimulation both in time and space.

Higher-Dimensional Automata: Extension to Infinite Tracks

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
We introduce higher-dimensional automata for infinite interval ipomsets (ω-HDAs). We define key concepts from different points of view, inspired from their finite counterparts. Then we explore languages recognized by ω-HDAs under Büchi and Muller semantics. We show that Muller acceptance is more expressive than Büchi acceptance and, in contrast to the finite case, both semantics do not yield languages closed under subsumption. Then, we adapt the original rational operations to deal with ω-HDAs and show that while languages of ω-HDAs are ω-rational, not all ω-rational languages can be expressed by ω-HDAs.

Yeo’s Theorem for Locally Colored Graphs: the Path to Sequentialization in Linear Logic

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
We revisit sequentialization proofs associated with the Danos-Regnier correctness criterion in the theory of proof nets of linear logic. Our approach relies on a generalization of Yeo’s theorem for graphs, based on colorings of half-edges. This happens to be the appropriate level of abstraction to extract sequentiality information from a proof net without modifying its graph structure. We thus obtain different ways of recovering a sequent calculus derivation from a proof net inductively, by relying on a splitting ⅋-vertex, on a splitting ⊗-vertex, on a splitting terminal vertex, etc. The proof of our Yeo-style theorem relies on a key lemma that we call cusp minimization. Given a coloring of half-edges, a cusp in a path is a vertex whose adjacent half-edges in the path have the same color. And, given a cycle with at least one cusp and subject to suitable hypotheses, cusp minimization constructs a cycle with strictly less cusps. In the absence of cusp-free cycles, cusp minimization is then enough to ensure the existence of a splitting vertex, i.e. a vertex that is a cusp of any cycle it belongs to. Our theorem subsumes several graph-theoretical results, including some known to be equivalent to Yeo’s theorem. The novelty is that they can be derived in a straightforward way, just by defining a dedicated coloring, again without any modification of the underlying graph structure (vertices and edges) - similar results from the literature required more involved encodings.
