Abstract
One of the classic problems in online decision-making is the secretary problem, where the goal is to hire the best secretary out of n rankable applicants or, in a natural extension, to maximize the probability of selecting the largest number from a sequence arriving in random order. Many works have considered generalizations of this problem where one can accept multiple values subject to a combinatorial constraint. The seminal work of Babaioff, Immorlica, Kempe, and Kleinberg (SODA'07, JACM'18) proposed the matroid secretary conjecture, suggesting that there exists an O(1)-competitive algorithm for the matroid constraint, and many works since have attempted to obtain algorithms for both general matroids and specific classes of matroids. The ultimate goal of these results is to obtain an e-competitive algorithm, and the strong matroid secretary conjecture states that this is possible for general matroids. One of the most important classes of matroids is the graphic matroid, where a set of edges in a graph is deemed independent if it contains no cycle. Given the rich combinatorial structure of graphs, obtaining algorithms for these matroids is often seen as a good first step towards solving the problem for general matroids. For matroid secretary, Babaioff et al. (SODA'07, JACM'18) first studied graphic matroid case and obtained a 16-competitive algorithm. Subsequent works have improved the competitive ratio, most recently to 4 by Soto, Turkieltaub, and Verdugo (SODA'18). In this paper, we break the 4-competitive barrier for the problem, obtaining a new algorithm with a competitive ratio of 3.95. For the special case of simple graphs (i.e., graphs that do not contain parallel edges) we further improve this to 3.77. Intuitively, solving the problem for simple graphs is easier as they do not contain cycles of length two. A natural question that arises is whether we can obtain a ratio arbitrarily close to e by assuming the graph has a large enough girth. We answer this question affirmatively, proving that one can obtain a competitive ratio arbitrarily close to e even for constant values of girth, providing further evidence for the strong matroid secretary conjecture. We further show that this bound is tight: for any constant g, one cannot obtain a competitive ratio better than e even if we assume that the input graph has girth at least g. To our knowledge, such a bound was not previously known even for simple graphs.

Decay of Correlation for Edge Colorings When q > 3Δ

Authors: Zejia Chen, Yulin Wang, Chihao Zhang, and Zihan Zhang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We examine various perspectives on the decay of correlation for the uniform distribution over proper q-edge colorings of graphs with maximum degree Δ. First, we establish the coupling independence property when q ≥ 3Δ for general graphs. Together with the recent work of Chen, Feng, Guo, Zhang and Zou (2024), this result implies a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme (FPTAS) for counting the number of proper q-edge colorings. Next, we prove the strong spatial mixing property on trees, provided that q > (3+o(1))Δ. The strong spatial mixing property is derived from the spectral independence property of a version of the weighted edge coloring distribution, which is established using the matrix trickle-down method developed in Abdolazimi, Liu and Oveis Gharan (FOCS, 2021) and Wang, Zhang and Zhang (STOC, 2024). Finally, we show that the weak spatial mixing property holds on trees with maximum degree Δ if and only if q ≥ 2Δ-1.

Quantum Speedup for Sampling Random Spanning Trees

Authors: Simon Apers, Minbo Gao, Zhengfeng Ji, and Chenghua Liu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We present a quantum algorithm for sampling random spanning trees from a weighted graph in Õ(√{mn}) time, where n and m denote the number of vertices and edges, respectively. Our algorithm has sublinear runtime for dense graphs and achieves a quantum speedup over the best-known classical algorithm, which runs in Õ(m) time. The approach carefully combines, on one hand, a classical method based on "large-step" random walks for reduced mixing time and, on the other hand, quantum algorithmic techniques, including quantum graph sparsification and a sampling-without-replacement variant of Hamoudi’s multiple-state preparation. We also establish a matching lower bound, proving the optimality of our algorithm up to polylogarithmic factors. These results highlight the potential of quantum computing in accelerating fundamental graph sampling problems.

On Optimization and Counting of Non-Broken Bases of Matroids

Abstract
Given a matroid M = (E,I), and a total ordering over the elements E, a broken circuit is a circuit where the smallest element is removed and an NBC independent set is an independent set in I with no broken circuit. The set of NBC independent sets of any matroid M define a simplicial complex called the broken circuit complex which has been the subject of intense study in combinatorics. Recently, Adiprasito, Huh and Katz showed that the face of numbers of any broken circuit complex form a log-concave sequence, proving a long-standing conjecture of Rota. We study counting and optimization problems on NBC bases of a generic matroid. We find several fundamental differences with the independent set complex: for example, we show that it is NP-hard to find the max-weight NBC base of a matroid or that the convex hull of NBC bases of a matroid has edges of arbitrary large length. We also give evidence that the natural down-up walk on the space of NBC bases of a matroid may not mix rapidly by showing that for some family of matroids it is NP-hard to count the number of NBC bases after certain conditionings.

An Improved Trickle down Theorem for Partite Complexes

Authors: Dorna Abdolazimi and Shayan Oveis Gharan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 264, 38th Computational Complexity Conference (CCC 2023)

Abstract
We prove a strengthening of the trickle down theorem for partite complexes. Given a (d+1)-partite d-dimensional simplicial complex, we show that if "on average" the links of faces of co-dimension 2 are (1-δ)/d-(one-sided) spectral expanders, then the link of any face of co-dimension k is an O((1-δ)/(kδ))-(one-sided) spectral expander, for all 3 ≤ k ≤ d+1. For an application, using our theorem as a black-box, we show that links of faces of co-dimension k in recent constructions of bounded degree high dimensional expanders have spectral expansion at most O(1/k) fraction of the spectral expansion of the links of the worst faces of co-dimension 2.

Matroid Partition Property and the Secretary Problem

Authors: Dorna Abdolazimi, Anna R. Karlin, Nathan Klein, and Shayan Oveis Gharan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 251, 14th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2023)

Abstract
A matroid M on a set E of elements has the α-partition property, for some α > 0, if it is possible to (randomly) construct a partition matroid 𝒫 on (a subset of) elements of M such that every independent set of 𝒫 is independent in M and for any weight function w:E → ℝ_{≥0}, the expected value of the optimum of the matroid secretary problem on 𝒫 is at least an α-fraction of the optimum on M. We show that the complete binary matroid, B_d on 𝔽₂^d does not satisfy the α-partition property for any constant α > 0 (independent of d). Furthermore, we refute a recent conjecture of [Kristóf Bérczi et al., 2021] by showing the same matroid is 2^d/d-colorable but cannot be reduced to an α 2^d/d-colorable partition matroid for any α that is sublinear in d.
