Abstract
We study discrete k-clustering problems in general metric spaces that are constrained by a combination of two different fairness conditions within the demographic fairness model. Given a metric space (P,d), where every point in P is equipped with a protected attribute, and a number k, the goal is to partition P into k clusters with a designated center each, such that a center-based objective function is minimized and the attributes are fairly distributed with respect to the following two fairness concepts: 1) group fairness: We aim for clusters with balanced numbers of attributes by specifying lower and upper bounds for the desired attribute proportions. 2) diverse center selection: Clusters have natural representatives, i.e., their centers. We ask for a balanced set of representatives by specifying the desired number of centers to choose from each attribute. Dickerson, Esmaeili, Morgenstern, and Pena [John P. Dickerson et al., 2023] denote the combination of these two constraints as doubly constrained fair clustering. They present algorithms whose guarantees depend on the best known approximation factors for either of these problems. Currently, this implies an 8-approximation with a small additive violation on the group fairness constraint. For k-center, we improve this approximation factor to 4 with a small additive violation. This guarantee also depends on the currently best algorithm for DS-fair k-center given by Jones, Nguyen and Nguyen [Matthew Jones et al., 2020]. For k-median and k-means, we propose the first constant-factor approximation algorithms. Our algorithms transform a solution that satisfies diverse center selection into a doubly constrained fair clustering using an LP-based approach. Furthermore, our results are generalizable to other center-selection constraints, such as matroid k-clustering and knapsack constraints.

Abstract
Autonomous driving system progress has been driven by improvements in machine learning (ML) models, whose computational demands now exceed what edge devices alone can provide. The cloud offers abundant compute, but the network has long been treated as an unreliable bottleneck rather than a co-equal part of the autonomous vehicle control loop. We argue that this separation is no longer tenable: safety-critical autonomy requires co-design of control, models, and network resource allocation itself. We introduce TURBO, a cloud-augmented control framework that addresses this challenge, formulating bandwidth allocation and control pipeline configuration across both the car and cloud as a joint optimization problem. TURBO maximizes benefit to the car while guaranteeing safety in the face of highly variable network conditions. We implement TURBO and evaluate it in both simulation and real-world deployment, showing it can improve average accuracy by up to 15.6%pt over existing on-vehicle-only pipelines. Our code is made available at www.github.com/NetSys/turbo.

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 139, 1st New Ideas in Networked Systems (NINeS 2026)

Abstract
Earth observation nanosatellites capture high-resolution photos of the Earth in near real-time. These images increasingly support ML applications that are critical for safety and response, such as forest fire and flood detection. However, the downlink bandwidth is limited, resulting in days or weeks of delay from image capture to training. In this work, we propose OrbitalBrain, an efficient in-space distributed ML training framework that leverages limited and predictable satellite compute, bandwidth, and power to intelligently balance data transfer, model aggregation, and local training. Our evaluations demonstrate that OrbitalBrain achieves 1.52×-12.4× speedup in time-to-accuracy while always reaching a higher final model accuracy compared to state-of-the-art ground-based or federated learning baselines. Furthermore, our approach is complementary to satellite imagery capturing and downloading, enhancing the overall efficiency of satellite-based applications.

Unsupervised Multimodal Learning for Fault Diagnosis and Prognosis - Application to Radiotherapy Systems (PhD Panel)

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 136, 36th International Conference on Principles of Diagnosis and Resilient Systems (DX 2025)

Abstract
Modern complex systems, such as radiotherapy machines, require robust strategies for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis to ensure operational continuity and patient safety. While data-driven methods have gained traction, few studies address diagnostic and prognostic tasks using multimodal operational data under unsupervised or semi-supervised learning settings. This gap is particularly critical given the scarcity of labeled failure data in real-world environments. This work aims to design a unified approach for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis using multimodal data in the absence of complete labeling. To this end, autoencoders (AEs) are employed due to their suitability for unsupervised and self-supervised learning, flexibility in handling heterogeneous data, and ability to construct latent representations optimized for various downstream tasks. A specific implementation based on a Long Short-Term Memory β-Variational Autoencoder (LSTM-β-VAE) was developed to detect anomalies in machine logs. This framework is applied to TomoTherapy® systems - a highly complex and under-explored use case within the radiotherapy domain. Initial results demonstrate strong anomaly detection performance on both a public benchmark dataset (HDFS) and a proprietary dataset derived from real-world TomoTherapy® machine faults. Beyond methodology, the paper includes a concise literature review of multimodal learning and data-driven diagnosis and prognosis with a focus on AEs. Based on this review, key research directions are identified for the continuation of the thesis, especially the integration of explainable AI as a means to enhance diagnosis capabilities in the absence of labeled faults.

An Expressive Trace Logic for Recursive Programs

Authors: Dilian Gurov and Reiner Hähnle

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
We present an expressive logic over trace formulas, based on binary state predicates, chop, and least fixed points, for precise specification of programs with recursive procedures. Both programs and trace formulas are equipped with a direct-style, fully compositional, denotational semantics that on programs coincides with the standard SOS of recursive programs. We design a compositional proof calculus for proving finite-trace program properties, and prove soundness as well as (relative) completeness. We show that each program can be mapped to a semantics-preserving trace formula and, vice versa, each trace formula can be mapped to a canonical program over slightly extended programs, resulting in a Galois connection between programs and formulas. Our results shed light on the correspondence between programming constructs and logical connectives.

Detecting Functionality-Specific Vulnerabilities via Retrieving Individual Functionality-Equivalent APIs in Open-Source Repositories

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 333, 39th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2025)

Abstract
Functionality-specific vulnerabilities, which mainly occur in Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) with specific functionalities, are crucial for software developers to detect and avoid. When detecting individual functionality-specific vulnerabilities, the existing two categories of approaches are ineffective because they consider only the API bodies and are unable to handle diverse implementations of functionality-equivalent APIs. To effectively detect functionality-specific vulnerabilities, we propose APISS, the first approach to utilize API doc strings and signatures instead of API bodies. APISS first retrieves functionality-equivalent APIs for APIs with existing vulnerabilities and then migrates Proof-of-Concepts (PoCs) of the existing vulnerabilities for newly detected vulnerable APIs. To retrieve functionality-equivalent APIs, we leverage a Large Language Model for API embedding to improve the accuracy and address the effectiveness and scalability issues suffered by the existing approaches. To migrate PoCs of the existing vulnerabilities for newly detected vulnerable APIs, we design a semi-automatic schema to substantially reduce manual costs. We conduct a comprehensive evaluation to empirically compare APISS with four state-of-the-art approaches of detecting vulnerabilities and two state-of-the-art approaches of retrieving functionality-equivalent APIs. The evaluation subjects include 180 widely used Java repositories using 10 existing vulnerabilities, along with their PoCs. The results show that APISS effectively retrieves functionality-equivalent APIs, achieving a Top-1 Accuracy of 0.81 while the best of the baselines under comparison achieves only 0.55. APISS is highly efficient: the manual costs are within 10 minutes per vulnerability and the end-to-end runtime overhead of testing one candidate API is less than 2 hours. APISS detects 179 new vulnerabilities and receives 60 new CVE IDs, bringing high value to security practice.

A Semantics of 𝕂 into Dedukti

Authors: Amélie Ledein, Valentin Blot, and Catherine Dubois

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 269, 28th International Conference on Types for Proofs and Programs (TYPES 2022)

Abstract
𝕂 is a semantical framework for formally describing the semantics of programming languages thanks to a BNF grammar and rewriting rules on configurations. It is also an environment that offers various tools to help programming with the languages specified in the formalism. For example, it is possible to execute programs thanks to the generated interpreter, or to check their properties thanks to the provided automatic theorem prover called the KProver. 𝕂 is based on la Matching Logic, a first-order logic with an application and fixed-point operators, extended with symbols to encode equality, typing and rewriting. This specific la Matching Logic theory is called Kore. Dedukti is a logical framework having for main goal the interoperability of proofs between different formal proof tools. Several translators to Dedukti exist or are under development, in order to automatically translate formalizations written, for instance, in Coq or PVS. Dedukti is based on the λΠ-calculus modulo theory, a λ-calculus with dependent types and extended with a primitive notion of computation defined by rewriting rules. The flexibility of this logical framework allows to encode many theories ranging from first-order logic to the Calculus of Constructions. In this article, we present a paper formalization of the translation from 𝕂 into Kore, and a paper formalization and an automatic translation tool, called KaMeLo, from Kore to Dedukti in order to execute programs in Dedukti.

Matching mu-Logic: Foundation of K Framework (Invited Paper)

Authors: Xiaohong Chen and Grigore Roşu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 139, 8th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2019)

Abstract
K framework is an effort in realizing the ideal language framework where programming languages must have formal semantics and all languages tools are automatically generated from the formal semantics in a correct-by-construction manner at no additional costs. In this extended abstract, we present matching mu-logic as the foundation of K and discuss some of its applications in defining constructors, transition systems, modal mu-logic and temporal logic variants, and reachability logic.
