Unbound Human-Machine Interfaces for Interaction in Weightless Environments

Abstract
User interfaces are subject to the rules of physics (e.g., Newton and Archimedes' laws) relevant to the environment they are in. As such, most interfaces and interaction techniques have been designed for Earth surface. However, when interacting with technology in weightless environments, such as in space, both human and machine will be subject to different physical constraints. For instance, underwater or in Space, people can experience spatial disorientation, which will in turn affect how they use a system. This position paper conceptualizes unbound Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) as interfaces where either, or both, human and machine are located beyond Earth surface. In particular, it describes how traditional HCI needs to be rethought for interaction in weightless environments and how theoretical models such as joint cognition can support future developments of unbound interfaces.

Gaze Beyond Limits: Integrating Eye-Tracking and Augmented Reality for Next-Generation Spacesuit Interaction

Abstract
Extravehicular activities (EVAs) are increasingly frequent in human spaceflight, particularly in spacecraft maintenance, scientific research, and planetary exploration. Spacesuits are essential for sustaining astronauts in the harsh environment of space, making their design a key factor in the success of EVA missions. The development of spacesuit technology has traditionally been driven by highly engineered solutions focused on life support, mission adaptability and operational efficiency. Modern spacesuits prioritize maintaining optimal internal temperature, humidity and pressure, as well as withstanding extreme temperature fluctuations and providing robust protection against micrometeoroid impacts and space debris. However, their bulkiness and rigidity impose significant physical strain on astronauts, reducing mobility and dexterity, particularly in tasks requiring fine motor control. The restricted field of view further complicates situational awareness, increasing the cognitive load during high-precision operations. While traditional spacesuits support basic EVA tasks, future space exploration shifting toward long-duration lunar and Martian surface missions demand more adaptive, intelligent, and astronaut-centric designs to overcome current constraints. To explore a next-generation spacesuit, this paper proposed an in-process eye-tracking embedded Augmented Reality (AR) Spacesuit System to enhance astronaut-environment interactions. By leveraging Segment-Anything Models (SAM) and Vision-Language Models (VLMs), we demonstrate a four-step approach to enable top-down gaze detection to minimize erroneous fixation data, gaze-based segmentation of objects of interest, real-time contextual assistance via AR overlays and hands-free operation within the spacesuit. This approach enhances real-time situational awareness and improves EVA task efficiency. We conclude with an exploration of the AR Helmet System’s potential in revolutionizing human-space interaction paradigms for future long-duration deep-space missions and discuss the further optimization of eye-tracking interactions using VLMs to predict astronaut intent and highlight relevant objects preemptively.

DiVerG: Scalable Distance Index for Validation of Paired-End Alignments in Sequence Graphs

Abstract
Determining the distance between two loci within a genomic region is a recurrent operation in various tasks in computational genomics. A notable example of this task arises in paired-end read mapping as a form of validation of distances between multiple alignments. While straightforward for a single genome, graph-based reference structures render the operation considerably more involved. Given the sheer number of such queries in a typical read mapping experiment, an efficient algorithm for answering distance queries is crucial. In this paper, we introduce DiVerG, a compact data structure as well as a fast and scalable algorithm, for constructing distance indexes for general sequence graphs on multi-core CPU and many-core GPU architectures. DiVerG is based on PairG [Jain et al., 2019], but overcomes the limitations of PairG by exploiting the extensive potential for improvements in terms of scalability and space efficiency. As a consequence, DiVerG can process substantially larger datasets, such as whole human genomes, which are unmanageable by PairG. DiVerG offers faster index construction time and consistently faster query time with gains proportional to the size of the underlying compact data structure. We demonstrate that our method performs favorably on multiple real datasets at various scales. DiVerG achieves superior performance over PairG; e.g. resulting to 2.5-4x speed-up in query time, 44-340x smaller index size, and 3-50x faster construction time for the genome graph of the MHC region, as a particularly variable region of the human genome. Polynomial-Time Algorithms for Contiguous Art Gallery and Related Problems

Abstract
We introduce the contiguous art gallery problem which is to guard the boundary of a simple polygon with a minimum number of guards such that each guard covers exactly one contiguous portion of the boundary. Art gallery problems are often NP-hard. In particular, it is NP-hard to minimize the number of guards to see the boundary of a simple polygon, without the contiguity constraint. This paper is a merge of three concurrent works [Ahmad Biniaz et al., 2024; Magnus Christian Ring Merrild et al., 2024; Eliot W. Robson et al., 2024] each showing that (surprisingly) the contiguous art gallery problem is solvable in polynomial time. The common idea of all three approaches is developing a greedy function that maps a point on the boundary to the furthest point on the boundary so that the contiguous interval along the boundary between them could be guarded by one guard. Repeatedly applying this function immediately leads to an OPT+1 approximation. By studying this greedy algorithm, we present three different approaches that achieve an optimal solution. The first and second approach apply this greedy algorithm from different points on the boundary that could be found in advance or on the fly while traversing along the boundary (respectively). The third approach represents this function as a piecewise linear rational function, which can be reduced to an abstract arc cover problem involving infinite families of arcs. We identify other problems that can be represented by similar functions, and solve them via the third approach. From the combinatorial point of view, we show that any n-vertex polygon can be guarded by at most ⌊(n-2)/2⌋ guards. This bound is tight because there are polygons that require this many guards.

A Minor-Testing Approach for Coordinated Motion Planning with Sliding Robots

Abstract
We study a variant of the Coordinated Motion Planning problem on undirected graphs, referred to herein as the Coordinated Sliding-Motion Planning (CSMP) problem. In this variant, we are given an undirected graph G, k robots R₁,… ,R_k positioned on distinct vertices of G, p ≤ k distinct destination vertices for robots R₁,… ,R_p, and 𝓁 ∈ ℕ. The problem is to decide if there is a serial schedule of at most 𝓁 moves (i.e., of makespan 𝓁) such that at the end of the schedule each robot with a destination reaches it, where a robot’s move is a free path (unoccupied by any robots) from its current position to an unoccupied vertex. The problem is known to be NP-hard even on full grids. It has been studied in several contexts, including coin movement and reconfiguration problems, with respect to feasibility, complexity, and approximation. Geometric variants of the problem, in which congruent geometric-shape robots (e.g., unit disk/squares) slide or translate in the Euclidean plane, have also been studied extensively. We investigate the parameterized complexity of CSMP with respect to two parameters: the number k of robots and the makespan 𝓁. As our first result, we present a fixed-parameter algorithm for CSMP parameterized by k. For our second result, we present a fixed-parameter algorithm parameterized by 𝓁 for the special case of CSMP in which only a single robot has a destination and the graph is planar. A crucial new ingredient for both of our results is that the solution admits a succinct representation as a small labeled topological minor of the input graph.

Knowledge Graphs for the Life Sciences: Recent Developments, Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract
The term life sciences refers to the disciplines that study living organisms and life processes, and include chemistry, biology, medicine, and a range of other related disciplines. Research efforts in life sciences are heavily data-driven, as they produce and consume vast amounts of scientific data, much of which is intrinsically relational and graph-structured. The volume of data and the complexity of scientific concepts and relations referred to therein promote the application of advanced knowledge-driven technologies for managing and interpreting data, with the ultimate aim to advance scientific discovery. In this survey and position paper, we discuss recent developments and advances in the use of graph-based technologies in life sciences and set out a vision for how these technologies will impact these fields into the future. We focus on three broad topics: the construction and management of Knowledge Graphs (KGs), the use of KGs and associated technologies in the discovery of new knowledge, and the use of KGs in artificial intelligence applications to support explanations (explainable AI). We select a few exemplary use cases for each topic, discuss the challenges and open research questions within these topics, and conclude with a perspective and outlook that summarizes the overarching challenges and their potential solutions as a guide for future research.

Model-based user interface adaptation

Abstract
Most work on model-based cross-platform user interface development is based on an assumption that the user interfaces on the different platforms should be as similar as possible. Much work on mobile user interfaces claim the opposite – that user interfaces on a mobile platform should have features not applicable on a stationary one and vise versa. Exploiting contextual information in user interfaces on mobile equipment is a prime example of this. This paper focus on this dichotomy between common development and exploiting platform specific features (or having specialized versions) on each platform. Few or none of the existing model-based languages and tools for user interface development are able to combine these two needs. These aspects are initially very difficult to combine, but in the paper we present an approach that makes this possible. First we briefly present our modelling approach, we pinpoint some of the general differences between mobile and stationary user interfaces, and we present an approach to building such self adapting systems where the adaptation is handled by generic middleware. Our approach builds on component frameworks and variability engineering to achieve adaptable systems, and property modelling, architectural reflection and context monitoring to support dynamic self-adaptation. With this as a background we investigate how the presented modelling approach may be extended and combined with the adaptive architecture to facilitate mode l-based user interface adaptation. Finally, we present some more general principles for how model-based approaches may be used when developing adaptive user interfaces.
