Abstract
For a set 𝒟 of disks in the plane, its disk graph G(𝒟) is the graph with vertex set 𝒟, where two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding disks intersect. Given a set 𝒟 of n weighted disks, computing a maximum independent set of G(𝒟) is NP-hard. In this paper, we present an O(n³log n)-time algorithm for this problem in a special setting in which the disks are in convex position, meaning that every disk appears on the convex hull of 𝒟. This setting has been studied previously for disks of equal radius, for which an O(n^{37/11})-time algorithm was known. Our algorithm also works in the weighted case where disks have weights and the goal is to compute a maximum-weight independent set. As an application of our result, we obtain an O(n³log² n)-time algorithm for the dispersion problem on a set of n disks in convex position: given an integer k, compute a subset of k disks that maximizes the minimum pairwise distance among all disks in the subset.

Splitting Sandwiches Unevenly via Unique Sink Orientations and Rainbow Arrangements

Abstract
The famous Ham-Sandwich theorem states that any d point sets in ℝ^d can be simultaneously bisected by a single hyperplane. The α-Ham-Sandwich theorem gives a sufficient condition for the existence of biased cuts, i.e., hyperplanes that do not cut off half but some prescribed fraction of each point set. We give two new proofs for this theorem. The first proof is completely combinatorial and highlights a strong connection between the α-Ham-Sandwich theorem and Unique Sink Orientations of grids. The second proof uses point-hyperplane duality and the Poincaré-Miranda theorem and allows us to generalize the result to and beyond oriented matroids. For this we introduce a new concept of rainbow arrangements, generalizing colored pseudo-hyperplane arrangements. Along the way, we also show that the realizability problem for rainbow arrangements is ∃ℝ-complete, which also implies that the realizability problem for grid Unique Sink Orientations is ∃ℝ-complete.

Unit Interval Selection in Random Order Streams

Abstract
We consider the Unit Interval Selection problem in the one-pass random order streaming model. In this setting, an algorithm is presented with a sequence of n unit-length intervals on the line that arrive in uniform random order, one at a time, and the objective is to output (an approximation of) a largest set of disjoint intervals using space linear in the size of an optimal solution. Previous work only considered adversarially ordered streams and established that, within these space constraints, a (2/3)-approximation can be achieved in such streams, and this is best possible, in that going beyond such an approximation factor requires space Ω(n) [Emek et al., TALG'16]. In this work, we show that an improved expected approximation factor can be achieved if the input stream is in uniform random order, where the expectation is taken over the stream order. More specifically, we give a one-pass streaming algorithm with expected approximation factor 0.7401 that uses space O(|OPT|), where OPT denotes an optimal solution. We also show that random order algorithms with expected approximation factor above 8/9 require space Ω(n), and algorithms that compute a better than 2/3-approximation with probability above 2/3 also require Ω(n) space. On a technical level, we design an algorithm for the restricted domain [0, Δ), for some constant Δ, and use standard techniques to obtain an algorithm for unrestricted domains. For the restricted domain [0, Δ), we run O(Δ) recursive instances of our algorithm, with each instance targeting the situation where a specific interval of an optimal solution arrives first. We establish the interesting property of our algorithm that it performs worst when the input stream consists solely of a set of independent intervals. It then remains to analyse the algorithm on these simple instances. Our lower bound is proved via communication complexity arguments, similar in spirit to the robust communication lower bounds established by [Chakrabarti et al., Theory Comput. 2016].

An Improved Guillotine Cut for Squares

Abstract
Given a set of n non-overlapping geometric objects, can we separate a constant fraction of them using straight-line cuts that extend from edge to edge? In 1996, Urrutia posed this question for compact convex objects. Pach and Tardos later refuted it for general line segments by constructing a family where any separable subfamily has size at most O (n^{log₃ 2}). However, for axis-parallel rectangles, they provided positive evidence, showing that an Ω(1/log n)-fraction can be separated. This problem naturally arises in geometric approximation algorithms. In particular, when restricting cuts to only orthogonal straight lines, known as a guillotine cut sequence, any bound on the separability ratio directly translates into a clean and simple dynamic programming for computing a maximum independent set of geometric objects. This paper focuses on the case when the objects are squares. For squares of arbitrary sizes, an Ω(1)-fraction can be separated (Abed et al., APPROX 2015), recently improved to 1/40 (and 1/160 ≈ 0.62% for the weighted case) (Khan and Pittu, APPROX 2020). We further improve this bound, showing that a 9/256 ≈ 3.51% can be separated for the weighted case. This result significantly narrows the possible range for squares to [3.51%, 50%]. The key to our improvement is a refined analysis of the existing framework.

Dynamic Streaming Algorithms for Geometric Independent Set

Authors: Timothy M. Chan and Yuancheng Yu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 349, 19th International Symposium on Algorithms and Data Structures (WADS 2025)

Abstract
We present the first space-efficient, fully dynamic streaming algorithm for computing a constant-factor approximation of the maximum independent set size of n axis-aligned rectangles in two dimensions. For an arbitrarily small constant δ > 0, our algorithm obtains an O((1/δ)²) approximation and requires O(U^δ polylog n) space and update time with high probability, assuming that coordinates are integers bounded by U. We also obtain a similar result for fat objects in any constant dimension. This extends recent non-streaming algorithms by Bhore and Chan from SODA'25, and also greatly extends previous streaming results, which were limited to special types of geometric objects such as one-dimensional intervals and unit disks.

Computing Distances on Graph Associahedra Is Fixed-Parameter Tractable

Authors: Luís Felipe I. Cunha, Ignasi Sau, Uéverton S. Souza, and Mario Valencia-Pabon

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
An elimination tree of a connected graph G is a rooted tree on the vertices of G obtained by choosing a root v and recursing on the connected components of G-v to obtain the subtrees of v. The graph associahedron of G is a polytope whose vertices correspond to elimination trees of G and whose edges correspond to tree rotations, a natural operation between elimination trees. These objects generalize associahedra, which correspond to the case where G is a path. Ito et al. [ICALP 2023] recently proved that the problem of computing distances on graph associahedra is NP-hard. In this paper we prove that the problem, for a general graph G, is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by the distance k. Prior to our work, only the case where G is a path was known to be fixed-parameter tractable. To prove our result, we use a novel approach based on a marking scheme that restricts the search to a set of vertices whose size is bounded by a (large) function of k.

On Guillotine Cutting Sequences

Abstract
Imagine a wooden plate with a set of non-overlapping geometric objects painted on it. How many of them can a carpenter cut out using a panel saw making guillotine cuts, i.e., only moving forward through the material along a straight line until it is split into two pieces? Already fifteen years ago, Pach and Tardos investigated whether one can always cut out a constant fraction if all objects are axis-parallel rectangles. However, even for the case of axis-parallel squares this question is still open. In this paper, we answer the latter affirmatively. Our result is constructive and holds even in a more general setting where the squares have weights and the goal is to save as much weight as possible. We further show that when solving the more general question for rectangles affirmatively with only axis-parallel cuts, this would yield a combinatorial O(1)-approximation algorithm for the Maximum Independent Set of Rectangles problem, and would thus solve a long-standing open problem. In practical applications, like the mentioned carpentry and many other settings, we can usually place the items freely that we want to cut out, which gives rise to the two-dimensional guillotine knapsack problem: Given a collection of axis-parallel rectangles without presumed coordinates, our goal is to place as many of them as possible in a square-shaped knapsack respecting the constraint that the placed objects can be separated by a sequence of guillotine cuts. Our main result for this problem is a quasi-PTAS, assuming the input data to be quasi-polynomially bounded integers. This factor matches the best known (quasi-polynomial time) result for (non-guillotine) two-dimensional knapsack.
