Narrative Extraction from Semantic Graphs (Short Paper)

Abstract
This paper proposes an interactive approach for narrative extraction from semantic graphs. The proposed approach extracts events from RDF triples, maps them to their corresponding attributes, and assembles them into a chronological sequence to form narrative graphs. The approach is evaluated on the Wikidata graph and achieves promising results in terms of narrative quality and coherence. The paper also discusses several avenues for future work, including the integration of machine learning, graph embedding methods and the exploration of advanced techniques for attention-based narrative labeling and semantic role labeling. Overall, the proposed method offers a promising approach to narrative extraction from semantic graphs and has the potential to be useful in various applications, including chatbots, conversational agents, and content creation tools.

Shifting programming education assessment from exercise outputs toward deeper comprehension (Invited Talk)

Abstract
Practice and assessment in introductory programming courses are typically centered on problems that require students to write code to produce specific outputs. While these exercises are necessary and useful for providing practice and mastering syntax, their solutions may not effectively measure the learners’ real understanding of programming concepts. Misconceptions and knowledge gaps may be hidden under an exercise solution with correct outputs. Furthermore, obtaining answers has never been so easy in the present era of chatbots, so why should we care (much) about the solutions? Learning a skill is a process that requires iteration and failing, where feedback is of utmost importance. A programming exercise is a means to build up reasoning capabilities and strategic knowledge, not an end in itself. It is the process that matters most, not the exercise solution. Assessing if the learning process was effective requires much more than checking outputs. I advocate that introductory programming learning could benefit from placing more emphasis on assessing learner comprehension, over checking outputs. Does this mean that we should not check if the results are correct? Certainly not, but a significant part of the learning process would focus on assessing and providing feedback regarding the comprehension of the written code and underlying concepts. Automated assessment systems would reflect this shift by comprising evaluation items for such a purpose, with adequate feedback. Achieving this involves numerous challenges and innovative technical approaches. In this talk, I present an overview of past and future work on tools that integrate code comprehension aspects in the process of solving programming exercises.

Large Semantic Graph Summarization Using Namespaces

Abstract
We propose an approach to summarize large semantics graphs using namespaces. Semantic graphs based on the Resource Description Framework (RDF) use namespaces on their serializations. Although these namespaces are not part of RDF semantics, they have intrinsic meaning. Based on this insight, we use namespaces to create summary graphs of reduced size, more amenable to be visualized. In the summarization, object literals are also reduced to their data type and the blank nodes to a group of their own. The visualization created for the summary graph aims to give insight of the original large graph. This paper describes the proposed approach and reports on the results obtained with representative large semantic graphs.

Sprinter: A Didactic Linter for Structured Programming

Abstract
Code linters are tools for detecting improper uses of programming constructs and violations of style issues. Despite that professional linters are available for numerous languages, they are not targeted to introductory programming, given their prescriptive nature that does not take into consideration a didactic viewpoint of learning programming fundamentals. We present Sprinter, a didactic code linter for structured programming supporting Java whose novelty aspects are twofold: (a) providing formative feedback on code with comprehensive explanatory messages (rather then prescriptive); (b) capability of detecting some control-flow issues to a deeper extent than professional linters. We review Sprinter features against popular tools, namely IntelliJ IDEA and Sonarlint.

Derzis: A Path Aware Linked Data Crawler

Abstract
Consuming Semantic Web data presents several challenges, from the number of datasets it is composed of, to the (very) large size of some of those datasets and the uncertain availability of querying endpoints. According to its core principles, accessing linked data can be done simply by dereferencing the IRIs of RDF resources. This is a light alternative both for clients and servers when compared to dataset dumps or SPARQL endpoints. The linked data interface does not support complex querying, but using it recursively may suffice to gather information about RDF resources, or to extract the relevant sub-graph which can then be processed and queried using other methods. We present Derzis, an open source semantic web crawler capable of traversing the linked data cloud starting from a set of seed resources. Derzis maintains information about the paths followed while crawling, which allows to define property path-based restrictions to the crawling frontier.

DataGen: JSON/XML Dataset Generator

Abstract
In this document we describe the steps towards DataGen implementation. DataGen is a versatile and powerful tool that allows for quick prototyping and testing of software applications, since currently too few solutions offer both the complexity and scalability necessary to generate adequate datasets in order to feed a data API or a more complex APP enabling those applications testing with appropriate data volume and data complexity. DataGen core is a Domain Specific Language (DSL) that was created to specify datasets. This language suffered several updates: repeating fields (with no limit), fuzzy fields (statistically generated), lists, highorder functions over lists, custom made transformation functions. The final result is a complex algebra that allows the generation of very complex datasets coping with very complex requirements. Throughout the paper we will give several examples of the possibilities. After generating a dataset DataGen gives the user the possibility to generate a RESTFull data API with that dataset, creating a running prototype. This solution has already been used in real life cases, described with more detail throughout the paper, in which it was able to create the intended datasets successfully. These allowed the application’s performance to be tested and for the right adjustments to be made. The tool is currently being deployed for general use.

DAOLOT: A Semantic Browser

Abstract
The goal of the Semantic Web is to allow the software agents around us and AIs to extract information from the Internet as easily as humans do. This semantic web is a network of connected graphs, where relations between concepts and entities make up a layout that is very easy for machines to navigate. At the moment, there are only a few tools that enable humans to navigate this new layer of the Internet, and those that exist are for the most part very specialized tools that require from the user a lot of pre-existing knowledge about the technologies behind this structure. In this article we report on the development of DAOLOT, a search engine that allows users with no previous knowledge of the semantic web to take full advantage of its information network. This paper presents its design, the algorithm behind it and the results of the validation testing conducted with users. The results of our validation testing show that DAOLOT is useful and intuitive to users, even those without any previous knowledge of the field, and provides curated information from multiple sources instantly about any topic.

Specifying Adaptations through a DSL with an Application to Mobile Robot Navigation

Abstract
Developing applications for resource-constrained embedded systems is a challenging task specially when applications must adapt to changes in their operating conditions or environment. To ensure an appropriate response at all times, it is highly desirable to develop applications that can dynamically adapt their behavior at run-time. In this paper we introduce an architecture that allows the specification of adaptable behavior through an external, high-level and platform-independent domain-specific language (DSL). The DSL is used here to define adaptation rules that change the run-time behavior of the application depending on various operational factors, such as time constraints. We illustrate the use of the DSL in an application to mobile robot navigation using smartphones, where experimental results highlight the benefits of specifying the adaptable behavior in a flexible and external way to the main application logic.
