Validating Static WCET Analysis: A Method and Its Application

Authors: Wei-Tsun Sun, Eric Jenn, and Hugues Cassé

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 72, 19th International Workshop on Worst-Case Execution Time Analysis (WCET 2019)

Abstract
WCET analysis is a key activity in the development of safety critical real-time systems. Whether upper bounds on WCETs are obtained using static analysis or measurements, the confidence on the compliance of a system with its temporal requirements directly depends on the confidence on these estimations. Static WCET analysis based on abstract interpretation takes benefits from its formal foundations. However, it also strongly depends on the correctness of the underlying models. We hereby show how we have validated the version of the data flow static analyser of OTAWA applied to the AURIX TC275 target processor.

Reducing Timing Interferences in Real-Time Applications Running on Multicore Architectures

Authors: Thomas Carle and Hugues Cassé

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 63, 18th International Workshop on Worst-Case Execution Time Analysis (WCET 2018)

Abstract
We introduce a unified wcet analysis and scheduling framework for real-time applications deployed on multicore architectures. Our method does not follow a particular programming model, meaning that any piece of existing code (in particular legacy) can be re-used, and aims at reducing automatically the worst-case number of timing interferences between tasks. Our method is based on the notion of Time Interest Points (tips), which are instructions that can generate and/or suffer from timing interferences. We show how such points can be extracted from the binary code of applications and selected prior to performing the wcet analysis. We then represent real-time tasks as sequences of time intervals separated by tips, and schedule those tasks so that the overall makespan (including the potential timing penalties incurred by interferences) is minimized. This scheduling phase is performed using an Integer Linear Programming (ilp) solver. Preliminary results on state-of-the-art benchmarks show promising results and pave the way for future extensions of the model and optimizations.

Abstract
Critical embedded systems are generally composed of repetitive tasks that must meet hard timing constraints, such as termination deadlines. Providing an upper bound of the worst-case execution time (WCET) of such tasks at design time is necessary to guarantee the correctness of the system. In static WCET analysis, a main source of over-approximation comes from the complexity of the modern hardware platforms: their timing behavior tends to become more unpredictable because of features like caches, pipeline, branch prediction, etc. Another source of over-approximation comes from the software itself: WCET analysis may consider potential worst-cases executions that are actually infeasible, because of the semantics of the program or because they correspond to unrealistic inputs. The W-SEPT project, for "WCET, Semantics, Precision and Traceability", has been carried out to study and exploit the influence of program semantics on the WCET estimation. This paper presents the results of this project : a semantic-aware WCET estimation workflow for high-level designed systems.

Expressing and Exploiting Conflicts over Paths in WCET Analysis

Authors: Vincent Mussot, Jordy Ruiz, Pascal Sotin, Marianne de Michiel, and Hugues Cassé

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 55, 16th International Workshop on Worst-Case Execution Time Analysis (WCET 2016)

Abstract
The presence of infeasible paths in a program is a source of imprecision in the Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) analysis. Detecting, expressing and exploiting such paths can improve the WCET estimation or, at least, improve the confidence we have in estimation precision. In this article, we propose an extension of the FFX format to express conflicts over paths and we detail two ways of enhancing the WCET analyses with that information. We demonstrate and compare these techniques on the Mälardalen benchmark suite and on C code generated from Esterel.

Dynamic Branch Resolution Based on Combined Static Analyses

Authors: Wei-Tsun Sun and Hugues Cassé

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 55, 16th International Workshop on Worst-Case Execution Time Analysis (WCET 2016)

Abstract
Static analysis requires the full knowledge of the overall program structure. The structure of a program can be represented by a Control Flow Graph (CFG) where vertices are basic blocks (BB) and edges represent the control flow between the BB. To construct a full CFG, all the BB as well as all of their possible targets addresses must be found. In this paper, we present a method to resolve dynamic branches, that identifies the target addresses of BB created due to the switch-cases and calls on function pointers. We also implemented a slicing method to speed up the overall analysis which makes our approach applicable on large and realistic real-time programs.

A Framework to Quantify the Overestimations of Static WCET Analysis

Authors: Hugues Cassé, Haluk Ozaktas, and Christine Rochange

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 47, 15th International Workshop on Worst-Case Execution Time Analysis (WCET 2015)

Abstract
To reduce complexity while computing an upper bound on the worst-case execution time, static WCET analysis performs over-approximations. This feeds the general feeling that static WCET estimations can be far above the real WCET. This feeling is strengthened when these estimations are compared to measured execution times: generally, it is very unlikely to capture the worstcase from observations, then the difference between the highest watermark and the proven WCET upper bound might be considerable. In this paper, we introduce a framework to quantify the possible overestimation on WCET upper bounds obtained by static analysis. The objective is to derive a lower bound on the WCET to complement the upper bound.

Using SMT Solving for the Lookup of Infeasible Paths in Binary Programs

Authors: Jordy Ruiz and Hugues Cassé

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 47, 15th International Workshop on Worst-Case Execution Time Analysis (WCET 2015)

Abstract
Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) is a key component to check temporal constraints of realtime systems. WCET by static analysis provides a safe upper bound. While hardware modelling is now efficient, loss of precision stems mainly in the inclusion of infeasible execution paths in the WCET calculation. This paper proposes a new method to detect such paths based on static analysis of machine code and the feasibility test of conditions using Satisfiability Modulo Theory (SMT) solvers. The experimentation shows promising results although the expected precision was slightly lowered due to clamping operations needed to cope with complexity explosion. An important point is that the implementation has been performed in the OTAWA framework and is independent of any instruction set thanks to its semantic instructions.

Multi-architecture Value Analysis for Machine Code

Authors: Hugues Cassé, Florian Birée, and Pascal Sainrat

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 30, 13th International Workshop on Worst-Case Execution Time Analysis (2013)

Abstract
Safety verification of critical real-time embedded systems requires Worst Case Execution Time information (WCET). Among the existing approaches to estimate the WCET, static analysis at the machine code level has proven to get safe results. A lot of different architectures are used in real-time systems but no generic solution provides the ability to perform static analysis of values handled by machine instructions. Nonetheless, results of such analyses are worth to improve the precision of other analyzes like data cache, indirect branches, etc. This paper proposes a semantic language aimed at expressing semantics of machine instructions whatever the underlying instruction set is. This ensures abstraction and portability of the value analysis or any analysis based on the semantic expression of the instructions. As a proof of concept, we adapted and refined an existing analysis representing values as Circular-Linear Progression (CLP), that is, as a sparse integer interval effective to model pointers. In addition, we show how our semantic instructions allow to build back conditions of loop in order to refine the CLP values and improve the precision of the analysis. Both contributions have been implemented in our framework, OTAWA, and experimented on the Malärdalen benchmark to desmonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

A Generic Framework for Blackbox Components in WCET Computation

Authors: Clément Ballabriga, Hugues Cassé, and Marianne De Michiel

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 10, 9th International Workshop on Worst-Case Execution Time Analysis (WCET'09) (2009)

Abstract
Validation of embedded hard real-time systems requires the computation of the Worst Case Execution Time (WCET). Although these systems make more and more use of Components Off The Shelf (COTS), the current WCET computation methods are usually applied to whole programs: these analysis methods require access to the whole system code, that is incompatible with the use of COTS. In this paper, after discussing the specific cases of the loop bounds estimation and the instruction cache analysis, we show in a generic way how static analysis involved in WCET computation can be pre-computed on COTS in order to obtain component partial results. These partial results can be distributed with the COTS, in order to compute the WCET in the context of a full application. We describe also the information items to include in the partial result, and we propose an XML exchange format to represent these data. Additionally, we show that the partial analysis enables us to reduce the analysis time while introducing very little pessimism.

Abstract
Following the successful WCET Tool Challenge in 2006, the second event in this series was organized in 2008, again with support from the ARTIST2 Network of Excellence. The WCET Tool Challenge 2008 (WCC'08) provides benchmark programs and poses a number of "analysis problems" about the dynamic, run-time properties of these programs. The participants are challenged to solve these problems with their program analysis tools. Two kinds of problems are defined: WCET problems, which ask for bounds on the execution time of chosen parts (subprograms) of the benchmarks, under given constraints on input data; and flow-analysis problems, which ask for bounds on the number of times certain parts of the benchmark can be executed, again under some constraints. We describe the organization of WCC'08, the benchmark programs, the participating tools, and the general results, successes, and failures. Most participants found WCC'08 to be a useful test of their tools. Unlike the 2006 Challenge, the WCC'08 participants include several tools for the same target (ARM7, LPC2138), and tools that combine measurements and static analysis, as well as pure static-analysis tools.

Improving the WCET computation time by IPET using control flow graph partitioning

Authors: Clément Ballabriga and Hugues Cassé

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 8, 8th International Workshop on Worst-Case Execution Time Analysis (WCET'08) (2008)

Abstract
Implicit Path Enumeration Technique (IPET) is currently largely used to compute Worst Case Execution Time (WCET) by modeling control flow and architecture using integer linear programming (ILP). As precise architecture effects requires a lot of constraints, the super-linear complexity of the ILP solver makes computation times bigger and bigger. In this paper, we propose to split the control flow of the program into smaller parts where a local WCET can be computed faster - as the resulting ILP system is smaller - and to combine these local results to get the overall WCET without loss of precision. The experimentation in our tool OTAWA with lp_solve solver has shown an average computation improvement of 6.5 times.

Abstract
This paper presents PapaBench, a free real-time benchmark and compares it with the existing benchmark suites. It is designed to be valuable for experimental works in WCET computation and may be also useful for scheduling analysis. This bench is based on the Paparazzi project that represents a real-time application, developed to be embedded on different Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). In this paper, we explain the transformation process of Paparazzi applied to obtain the PapaBench. We provide a high level AADL model, which reflects the behaviors of each component of the system and their interactions. As the source project, Paparazzi, PapaBench is delivered under the GNU license and is freely available to all researchers. Unlike other usual benchmarks widely used for WCET computation, this one is based on a real and complete real-time embedded application.
