Abstract
We consider the problem of approximating the reachability probabilities in Markov decision processes (MDP) with uncountable (continuous) state and action spaces. While there are algorithms that, for special classes of such MDP, provide a sequence of approximations converging to the true value in the limit, our aim is to obtain an algorithm with guarantees on the precision of the approximation. As this problem is undecidable in general, assumptions on the MDP are necessary. Our main contribution is to identify sufficient assumptions that are as weak as possible, thus approaching the "boundary" of which systems can be correctly and reliably analyzed. To this end, we also argue why each of our assumptions is necessary for algorithms based on processing finitely many observations. We present two solution variants. The first one provides converging lower bounds under weaker assumptions than typical ones from previous works concerned with guarantees. The second one then utilizes stronger assumptions to additionally provide converging upper bounds. Altogether, we obtain an anytime algorithm, i.e. yielding a sequence of approximants with known and iteratively improving precision, converging to the true value in the limit. Besides, due to the generality of our assumptions, our algorithms are very general templates, readily allowing for various heuristics from literature in contrast to, e.g., a specific discretization algorithm. Our theoretical contribution thus paves the way for future practical improvements without sacrificing correctness guarantees.

Enforcing ω-Regular Properties in Markov Chains by Restarting

Authors: Javier Esparza, Stefan Kiefer, Jan Křetínský, and Maximilian Weininger

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 203, 32nd International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2021)

Abstract
Restarts are used in many computer systems to improve performance. Examples include reloading a webpage, reissuing a request, or restarting a randomized search. The design of restart strategies has been extensively studied by the performance evaluation community. In this paper, we address the problem of designing universal restart strategies, valid for arbitrary finite-state Markov chains, that enforce a given ω-regular property while not knowing the chain. A strategy enforces a property φ if, with probability 1, the number of restarts is finite, and the run of the Markov chain after the last restart satisfies φ. We design a simple "cautious" strategy that solves the problem, and a more sophisticated "bold" strategy with an almost optimal number of restarts.

Of Cores: A Partial-Exploration Framework for Markov Decision Processes

Authors: Jan Křetínský and Tobias Meggendorfer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 140, 30th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2019)

Abstract
We introduce a framework for approximate analysis of Markov decision processes (MDP) with bounded-, unbounded-, and infinite-horizon properties. The main idea is to identify a "core" of an MDP, i.e., a subsystem where we provably remain with high probability, and to avoid computation on the less relevant rest of the state space. Although we identify the core using simulations and statistical techniques, it allows for rigorous error bounds in the analysis. Consequently, we obtain efficient analysis algorithms based on partial exploration for various settings, including the challenging case of strongly connected systems.

Learning-Based Mean-Payoff Optimization in an Unknown MDP under Omega-Regular Constraints

Authors: Jan Kretínský, Guillermo A. Pérez, and Jean-François Raskin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 118, 29th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2018)

Abstract
We formalize the problem of maximizing the mean-payoff value with high probability while satisfying a parity objective in a Markov decision process (MDP) with unknown probabilistic transition function and unknown reward function. Assuming the support of the unknown transition function and a lower bound on the minimal transition probability are known in advance, we show that in MDPs consisting of a single end component, two combinations of guarantees on the parity and mean-payoff objectives can be achieved depending on how much memory one is willing to use. (i) For all epsilon and gamma we can construct an online-learning finite-memory strategy that almost-surely satisfies the parity objective and which achieves an epsilon-optimal mean payoff with probability at least 1 - gamma. (ii) Alternatively, for all epsilon and gamma there exists an online-learning infinite-memory strategy that satisfies the parity objective surely and which achieves an epsilon-optimal mean payoff with probability at least 1 - gamma. We extend the above results to MDPs consisting of more than one end component in a natural way. Finally, we show that the aforementioned guarantees are tight, i.e. there are MDPs for which stronger combinations of the guarantees cannot be ensured.

The Satisfiability Problem for Unbounded Fragments of Probabilistic CTL

Authors: Jan Kretínský and Alexej Rotar

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 118, 29th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2018)

Abstract
We investigate the satisfiability and finite satisfiability problem for probabilistic computation-tree logic (PCTL) where operators are not restricted by any step bounds. We establish decidability for several fragments containing quantitative operators and pinpoint the difficulties arising in more complex fragments where the decidability remains open.

Linear Distances between Markov Chains

Authors: Przemyslaw Daca, Thomas A. Henzinger, Jan Kretinsky, and Tatjana Petrov

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 59, 27th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2016)

Abstract
We introduce a general class of distances (metrics) between Markov chains, which are based on linear behaviour. This class encompasses distances given topologically (such as the total variation distance or trace distance) as well as by temporal logics or automata. We investigate which of the distances can be approximated by observing the systems, i.e. by black-box testing or simulation, and we provide both negative and positive results.

Polynomial Time Decidability of Weighted Synchronization under Partial Observability

Authors: Jan Kretinsky, Kim Guldstrand Larsen, Simon Laursen, and Jiri Srba

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 42, 26th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2015)

Abstract
We consider weighted automata with both positive and negative integer weights on edges and study the problem of synchronization using adaptive strategies that may only observe whether the current weight-level is negative or nonnegative. We show that the synchronization problem is decidable in polynomial time for deterministic weighted automata.

Verification of Open Interactive Markov Chains

Authors: Tomas Brazdil, Holger Hermanns, Jan Krcal, Jan Kretinsky, and Vojtech Rehak

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 18, IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2012)

Abstract
Interactive Markov chains (IMC) are compositional behavioral models extending both labeled transition systems and continuous-time Markov chains. IMC pair modeling convenience - owed to compositionality properties - with effective verification algorithms and tools - owed to Markov properties. Thus far however, IMC verification did not consider compositionality properties, but considered closed systems. This paper discusses the evaluation of IMC in an open and thus compositional interpretation. For this we embed the IMC into a game that is played with the environment. We devise algorithms that enable us to derive bounds on reachability probabilities that are assured to hold in any composition context.

Process Algebra for Modal Transition Systemses

Authors: Nikola Benes and Jan Kretinsky

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 16, Sixth Doctoral Workshop on Mathematical and Engineering Methods in Computer Science (MEMICS'10) -- Selected Papers (2011)

Abstract
The formalism of modal transition systems (MTS) is a well established framework for systems specification as well as abstract interpretation. Nevertheless, due to incapability to capture some useful features, various extensions have been studied, such as e.g. mixed transition systems or disjunctive MTS. Thus a need to compare them has emerged. Therefore, we introduce transition system with obligations as a general model encompassing all the aforementioned models, and equip it with a process algebra description. Using these instruments, we then compare the previously studied subclasses and characterize their relationships.

Continuous-Time Stochastic Games with Time-Bounded Reachability

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 4, IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (2009)

Abstract
We study continuous-time stochastic games with time-bounded reachability objectives. We show that each vertex in such a game has a \emph{value} (i.e., an equilibrium probability), and we classify the conditions under which optimal strategies exist. Finally, we show how to compute optimal strategies in finite uniform games, and how to compute $\varepsilon$-optimal strategies in finitely-branching games with bounded rates (for finite games, we provide detailed complexity estimations).

Authors: Tomas Brazdil, Vojtech Forejt, Jan Krcal, Jan Kretinsky, and Antonin Kucera

Anytime Guarantees for Reachability in Uncountable Markov Decision Processes

Authors: Kush Grover, Jan Křetínský, Tobias Meggendorfer, and Maximilian Weininger

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 243, 33rd International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2022)

Authors: Tomas Brazdil, Vojtech Forejt, Jan Krcal, Jan Kretinsky, and Antonin Kucera
