Towards an Intelligent Algorithm for Profile Authentication and Identification

Authors: Nuno Jerónimo, Filipe Portela, and Henrique Santos

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 120, 13th Symposium on Languages, Applications and Technologies (SLATE 2024)

Abstract
In the context digital transformation, the necessity for secure and efficient virtual identity verification has become paramount. Traditional methods often fail to balance security, speed, and usability, leaving gaps in user authentication systems. This paper addresses the critical challenge of creating a virtual ID system that identifies a single profile with improved security, speed, and effectiveness. An innovative face recognition algorithm using dynamic content loading and deep learning techniques is proposed. The utilisation of OpenCV for face recognition and feature extraction, combined with advanced similarity calculation methods, the system achieves superior accuracy in profile authentication tasks. Extensive testing, including identical twin scenarios, demonstrates the robustness of the algorithm and its superiority over existing solutions such as Apple’s Face ID. In 150 of the tests conducted with identical twins, the algorithm consistently achieved 100% recognition accuracy. This breakthrough in facial recognition technology promises to create a triple authentication system, which will solve the problem of false positives in terms of identifying and authenticating people. This paper integrates principles from Computer Intelligence and Chatbots, emphasizing the application of deep learning techniques in enhancing virtual identity verification systems. This research contributes to the broader discourse on improving authentication mechanisms in the digital age.

Learning Paths: A New Teaching Strategy with Gamification

Authors: Filipe Portela

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 122, 5th International Computer Programming Education Conference (ICPEC 2024)

Abstract
Education’s primary objective should be to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for professional success. However, the current education system often employs a one-size-fits-all approach, treating all students alike and expecting uniform performance. As students progress, their strengths and weaknesses become more apparent, yet they face the same challenges. This article addresses this issue by challenging the conventional approach in higher education, demonstrating that it can accommodate diverse student needs and aspirations while maintaining academic rigour and incorporating gamification strategies. Within the TechTeach paradigm, a two-path strategy was developed and implemented with 114 students at the University of Minho. The first path caters to students aiming for satisfactory grades, considering the subject’s minimal relevance to their future careers. The second path is designed for aspiring experts in the subject. The results indicate a high level of student approval, with 90% expressing satisfaction. Additionally, 49.43% of students achieved final grades between 14 and 18, highlighting the effectiveness of tailored learning pathways in meeting diverse student needs and goals.

Towards a Universal and Interoperable Scientific Data Model

Authors: João Oliveira, Diogo Gomes, Francisca Santana, Jorge Oliveira e Sá, and Filipe Portela

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 113, 12th Symposium on Languages, Applications and Technologies (SLATE 2023)

Abstract
The growing number of researchers in Portugal has intensified the appearance of several scientific platforms that allow the indexation of publications and the management of scientific profiles. The diversity and high number of platforms brings problems at the level of crossover and integrity of the information, i.e., the researchers’ profiles are rarely updated, and their data are not properly grouped and cross-referenced. Hence, the need arises for a more global platform that enables the synchronization of information, free from constraints imposed by existing data. The study and work carried out aims to solve this problem by creating a robust and interoperable platform based on an innovative library merge algorithm. Thus, this platform includes information regarding publications, researchers and scientific indicators, by crossing and grouping data from several platforms.

A New Approach to Perform Individual Assessments at Higher Education Using Gamification Systems

Authors: Filipe Portela

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 112, 4th International Computer Programming Education Conference (ICPEC 2023)

Abstract
Assessment is a crucial element of the educational process, but traditional pen-and-paper tests have limitations in promoting active learning and engagement. To address this challenge, the use of online gamification platforms has increased. In this context, this study explores the effectiveness of Kahoot! for assessment exercises (AE) in higher education. These experiments occurred over three years, included five courses with computer science subjects and had 507 participants. Overall, 97.04% of students achieved a grade higher than ten, and only four failed. The results show that Kahoot! can promote engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes, and its use is well-received by students - 78.70% of students enjoyed this approach, and only 8.68% of participants disliked it. The study’s findings provide valuable insights into using Kahoot! as Student Response System for testing in higher education, with implications for developing new and innovative approaches to assessment and evaluation.

Thoughts of a Post-Pandemic Higher Education in Information Systems and Technologies

Authors: Francini Hak, Jorge Oliveira e Sá, and Filipe Portela

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 102, Third International Computer Programming Education Conference (ICPEC 2022)

Abstract
In late 2019, a new class of coronavirus appeared in China that triggered a worldwide pandemic declared by the World Health Organization. Several businesses were affected and people had to adapt their social life to a virtual mode. Higher education institutions suffered from this sudden change, and had to adapt without any preparation or planning. After almost two years of carrying out activities in an online format, face-to-face activities in higher education have returned. This case study aims to analyze the performance of students in a new curricular unit of the Engineering and Management of Information Systems course at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho in Portugal. The study is applied to 142 students who entered the 1st year of the 2019/2020 school year and returned to face-to-face activities in the 3rd year of the 2021/2022 school year. Two questionnaires were applied, one at the beginning of the semester with 71 answers and another at the end of the semester with 39 answers. The main objective was to understand the students' feedback regarding the functioning of the classes, in which a great difficulty in teamwork was highlighted.

Online-Teaching Environment with Gamification - A real Case Study

Authors: Filipe Portela

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 91, Second International Computer Programming Education Conference (ICPEC 2021)

Abstract
Teaching processes are changing, and Higher Education is not an exception. Professors are adapting their teaching methods to b-learning classes. They are looking for innovative approaches and tools that allow engaging students in the classrooms. This paper presents the results of a teaching and challenging experience. The TeachTeach paradigm was used in a fully online environment. Professors explored several methods/approaches during the semester, and the students were faced-off with a new reality of learning. They attested students skills like programming, resilience, innovation and entrepreneur capabilities during the development of a project with an actual web application. The results show that the efforts were tremendous but beneficial for all the stakeholders. At the end of the case study, a few numbers should be highlighted: 11,173 Downloads, 15,224 Messages, 200,000 Sessions and 208 online hour classes. Comparing this approach with other curricular units (CUnit) online strategies, 96,53% of the students considered it equal or better.

A New and Interactive Teaching Approach with Gamification for Motivating Students in Computer Science Classrooms

Authors: Filipe Portela

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 81, First International Computer Programming Education Conference (ICPEC 2020)

Abstract
Higher Education professors and students recognise that the introduction of new tools and learning methods can improve the teaching and motivation to learn. A new interactive and motivating methodology was designed and tested in a real classroom environment. This method, named TechTeach, explored a set of trending concepts applied to teach of Computer Science subjects: BYOD, Gamification, Soft-skills, quiz, and surveys and flipped classrooms to proportionate the best learning environment to the students. The paper presents the teaching plan and the case study used as proof of concept. In the end, it is possible to affirm that the students liked this method and are familiarised with it - most of the answers to the assessment method quiz (87%), was positive.

IoEduc - Bring Your Own Device to the Classroom

Authors: Miguel Silva, Diogo Ferreira, and Filipe Portela

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 81, First International Computer Programming Education Conference (ICPEC 2020)

Abstract
The evolution of technology brings new challenges to teaching platforms. Students are demanding and want to have dynamic and interactive environments. Classrooms are much more than a simple place to study. Students can work and learn anywhere and anytime they want. Having this reality in consideration emerges the concept of Bring Your Own Device to classrooms. So, in the first instance, it is essential to understand the concept and which tasks can be transported to students devices. After that, it is time to design a new tool capable of answering new teaching demands. ioEduc arises as a platform able to support a unique and interactive way of teaching. This emerging platform was tested during a semester, and the assessment results of utility are promising (0% of negative answers and more than 60% of students consider this tool indispensable to the future).
