Modelling Affordances as Emergent Phenomena (Short Paper)

Abstract
Affordances are an important basis for many human-environment interactions such as navigation or geo-design. In this short paper we present an approach to modelling affordances based on treating affordances as emergent phenomena in an agent-based simulation. We use the notion of an affordance schema to represent the setting in which the emergence of an affordance is made possible. We use a case study to show that (unexpected) affordances emerge during the course of the simulation. While the general approach is promising and may be used for other emergent phenomena such as landmarks, we also acknowledge and discuss the problems incurred during the modelling process. The paper closes with a reflection and some ideas for future work.

Is Salience Robust? A Heterogeneity Analysis of Survey Ratings

Abstract
Differing weights for salience subdimensions (e.g. visual or structural salience) have been suggested since the early days of salience models in GIScience. Up until now, however, it remains unclear whether weights found in studies are robust across environments, objects and observers. In this study we examine the robustness of a survey-based salience model. Based on ratings of N_{o}=720 objects by N_{p}=250 different participants collected in-situ in two different European cities (Regensburg and Augsburg) we conduct a heterogeneity analysis taking into account environment and sense of direction stratified by gender. We find, first, empirical evidence that our model is invariant across environments, i.e. the strength of the relationships between the subdimensions of salience does not differ significantly. The structural model coefficients found can, hence, be used to calculate values for overall salience across different environments. Second, we provide empirical evidence that invariance of our measurement model is partly not given with respect to both, gender and sense of direction. These compositional invariance problems are a strong indicator for personal aspects playing an important role.

Abstract
This report documents the talks and group work of Dagstuhl Seminar 16091 "Computational Challenges in Cooperative Intelligent Urban Transport". This interdisciplinary seminar brought researchers together from many fields including computer science, transportation, operations research, mathematics, machine learning and artificial intelligence. The seminar included two formats of talks: several minute research statements and longer overview talks. The talks given are documented here with abstracts. Furthermore, this seminar consisted of significant amounts of group work that is also documented with short abstracts detailing group discussions and planned outcomes.
