Generalised Quantifiers Based on Rabin-Mostowski Index

Abstract
In this work we introduce new generalised quantifiers which allow us to express the Rabin-Mostowski index of automata. Our main results study expressive power and decidability of the monadic second-order (MSO) logic extended with these quantifiers. We study these problems in the realm of both ω-words and infinite trees. As it turns out, the pictures in these two cases are very different. In the case of ω-words the new quantifiers can be effectively expressed in pure MSO logic. In contrast, in the case of infinite trees, addition of these quantifiers leads to an undecidable formalism. To realise index-quantifier elimination, we consider the extension of MSO by game quantifiers. As a tool, we provide a specific quantifier-elimination procedure for them. Moreover, we introduce a novel construction of transducers realising strategies in ω-regular games with monadic parameters.

Large Multi-Modal Model Cartographic Map Comprehension for Textual Locality Georeferencing

Abstract
Millions of biological sample records collected in the last few centuries archived in natural history collections are un-georeferenced. Georeferencing complex locality descriptions associated with these collection samples is a highly labour-intensive task collection agencies struggle with. None of the existing automated methods exploit maps that are an essential tool for georeferencing complex relations. We present preliminary experiments and results of a novel method that exploits multi-modal capabilities of recent Large Multi-Modal Models (LMM). This method enables the model to visually contextualize spatial relations it reads in the locality description. We use a grid-based approach to adapt these auto-regressive models for this task in a zero-shot setting. Our experiments conducted on a small manually annotated dataset show impressive results for our approach (∼1 km Average distance error) compared to uni-modal georeferencing with Large Language Models and existing georeferencing tools. The paper also discusses the findings of the experiments in light of an LMM’s ability to comprehend fine-grained maps. Motivated by these results, a practical framework is proposed to integrate this method into a georeferencing workflow.

The Memory of ω-Regular and BC(Σ⁰₂) Objectives

Abstract
In the context of 2-player zero-sum infinite duration games played on (potentially infinite) graphs, the memory of an objective is the smallest integer k such that in any game won by Eve, she has a strategy with ≤ k states of memory. For ω-regular objectives, checking whether the memory equals a given number k was not known to be decidable. In this work, we focus on objectives in BC(Σ⁰₂), i.e. recognised by a potentially infinite deterministic parity automaton. We provide a class of automata that recognise objectives with memory ≤ k, leading to the following results: - for ω-regular objectives, the memory can be computed in NP; - given two objectives W₁ and W₂ in BC(Σ⁰₂) and assuming W₁ is prefix-independent, the memory of W₁ ∪ W₂ is at most the product of the memories of W₁ and W₂. Our results also apply to chromatic memory, the variant where strategies can update their memory state only depending on which colour is seen.

A Dichotomy Theorem for Ordinal Ranks in MSO

Abstract
We focus on formulae ∃X.φ(Y, X) of monadic second-order logic over the full binary tree, such that the witness X is a well-founded set. The ordinal rank rank(X) < ω₁ of such a set X measures its depth and branching structure. We search for the least upper bound for these ranks, and discover the following dichotomy depending on the formula φ. Let η_φ be the minimal ordinal such that, whenever an instance Y satisfies the formula, there is a witness X with rank(X) ≤ η_φ. Then η_φ is either strictly smaller than ω² or it reaches the maximal possible value ω₁. Moreover, it is decidable which of the cases holds. The result has potential for applications in a variety of ordinal-related problems, in particular it entails a result about the closure ordinal of a fixed-point formula.

The Determinacy of Context-Free Games

Abstract
We prove that the determinacy of Gale-Stewart games whose winning sets are accepted by real-time 1-counter Büchi automata is equivalent to the determinacy of (effective) analytic Gale-Stewart games which is known to be a large cardinal assumption. We show also that the determinacy of Wadge games between two players in charge of omega-languages accepted by 1-counter Büchi automata is equivalent to the (effective) analytic Wadge determinacy. Using some results of set theory we prove that one can effectively construct a 1-counter Büchi automaton A and a Büchi automaton B such that: (1) There exists a model of ZFC in which Player 2 has a winning strategy in the Wadge game W(L(A), L(B)); (2) There exists a model of ZFC in which the Wadge game W(L(A), L(B)) is not determined. Moreover these are the only two possibilities, i.e. there are no models of ZFC in which Player 1 has a winning strategy in the Wadge game W(L(A), L(B)).

Topological Complexity of omega-Powers: Extended Abstract

Abstract
The operation of taking the omega-power $V^omega$ of a language $V$ is a fundamental operation over finitary languages leading to omega-languages. Since the set $X^omega$ of infinite words over a finite alphabet $X$ can be equipped with the usual Cantor topology, the question of the topological complexity of omega-powers of finitary languages naturally arises and has been posed by Damian Niwinski (1990), Pierre Simonnet (1992), and Ludwig Staiger (1997). We investigate the topological complexity of omega-powers. We prove the following very surprising results which show that omega-powers exhibit a great opological complexity: for each non-null countable ordinal $xi$, there exist some $Sigma^0_xi$-complete omega-powers, and some $Pi^0_xi$-complete omega-powers. On the other hand, the Wadge hierarchy is a great refinement of the Borel hierarchy, determined by Bill Wadge. We show that, for each ordinal $xi$ greater than or equal to 3, there are uncountably many Wadge degrees of omega-powers of Borel rank $xi +1$. Using tools of effective descriptive set theory, we prove some effective versions of the above results.
