Semantically Reflected Programs

Abstract
This paper addresses the dichotomy between the formalization of structural and the formalization of executable behavioral knowledge by means of semantically lifted programs, which explore an intuitive connection between imperative programs and knowledge graphs. While knowledge graphs and ontologies are eminently useful to represent formal knowledge about a system’s individuals and universals, programming languages are designed to describe the system’s evolution. To address this dichotomy, we introduce a semantic lifting of the program states of an executing progam into a knowledge graph, for an object-oriented programming language. The resulting graph is exposed as a semantic reflection layer within the programming language, allowing programmers to leverage knowledge of the application domain in their programs during execution. In this paper, we formalize semantic lifting and semantic reflection for a small imperative programming language, SMOL, explain the operational aspects of the language, and consider type correctness and virtualization for runtime program queries through the semantic reflection layer. We illustrate semantic lifting and semantic reflection through a case study of geological modeling and discuss different applications of the technique. The language implementation is open source and available online.

Abstract
This Manifesto was produced from the Perspectives Workshop 25122 entitled "Climate Change: What is Computing’s Responsibility?" held March 16-19, 2025 at Schloss Dagstuhl, Germany. The Workshop provided a forum for world-leading computer scientists and expert consultants on environmental policy and sustainable transition to engage in a critical and urgent conversation about computing’s responsibilities in addressing climate change - or more aptly, climate crisis. The resulting Manifesto outlines commitments and directions for future action which, if adopted as a basis for more responsible computing practices, will help ensure that these technologies do not threaten the long-term habitability of the planet. We preface our Manifesto with a recognition that humanity is on a path that is not in agreement with international global warming targets and explore how computing technologies are currently hastening the overshoot of these boundaries. We critically assess the vaunted potential for harnessing computing technologies for the mitigation of global warming, agreeing that, under current circumstances, computing is contributing to negative environmental impacts in other sectors. Computing primarily improves efficiency and reduces costs which leads to more consumption and more negative environmental impact. Relying solely on efficiency gains in computing has thus far proven to be insufficient to curb global greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, computing’s purpose within a strategy for tackling climate change must be reimagined. Our recommendations cover changes that need to be urgently made to the design priorities of computing technologies, but also speak to the more systemic shift in mindset, with sustainability and human rights providing a necessary moral foundation for developing the kinds of computing technologies most needed by society. We also stress the importance of digital policy that accounts for both the direct material impacts of computing and the detrimental indirect impacts arising from computing-enabled efficiencies, and the role of computing professionals in informing policy making.

Reconstructing Random Graphs from Distance Queries

Abstract
We estimate the minimum number of distance queries that is sufficient to reconstruct the binomial random graph G(n,p) with constant diameter with high probability. We get a tight (up to a constant factor) answer for all p > n^{-1+o(1)} outside "threshold windows" around n^{-k/(k+1)+o(1)}, k ∈ ℤ_{> 0}: with high probability the query complexity equals Θ(n^{4-d}p^{2-d}), where d is the diameter of the random graph. This demonstrates the following non-monotone behaviour: the query complexity jumps down at moments when the diameter gets larger; yet, between these moments the query complexity grows. We also show that there exists a non-adaptive algorithm that reconstructs the random graph with O(n^{4-d}p^{2-d}ln n) distance queries with high probability, and this is best possible.

Efficient Neural Network Verification via Order Leading Exploration of Branch-and-Bound Trees

Abstract
The vulnerability of neural networks to adversarial perturbations has necessitated formal verification techniques that can rigorously certify the quality of neural networks. As the state-of-the-art, branch-and-bound (BaB) is a "divide-and-conquer" strategy that applies off-the-shelf verifiers to sub-problems for which they perform better. While BaB can identify the sub-problems that are necessary to be split, it explores the space of these sub-problems in a naive "first-come-first-served" manner, thereby suffering from an issue of inefficiency to reach a verification conclusion. To bridge this gap, we introduce an order over different sub-problems produced by BaB, concerning with their different likelihoods of containing counterexamples. Based on this order, we propose a novel verification framework Oliva that explores the sub-problem space by prioritizing those sub-problems that are more likely to find counterexamples, in order to efficiently reach the conclusion of the verification. Even if no counterexample can be found in any sub-problem, it only changes the order of visiting different sub-problems and so will not lead to a performance degradation. Specifically, Oliva has two variants, including Oliva^GR, a greedy strategy that always prioritizes the sub-problems that are more likely to find counterexamples, and Oliva^SA, a balanced strategy inspired by simulated annealing that gradually shifts from exploration to exploitation to locate the globally optimal sub-problems. We experimentally evaluate the performance of Oliva on 690 verification problems spanning over 5 models with datasets MNIST and CIFAR-10. Compared to the state-of-the-art approaches, we demonstrate the speedup of Oliva for up to 25× in MNIST, and up to 80× in CIFAR-10.

Research with Collaborative Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Abstract
We provide an overview of ongoing research which targets development of a principled framework for mixed-initiative interaction with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). UASs are now becoming technologically mature enough to be integrated into civil society. Principled interaction between UASs and human resources is an essential component in their future uses in complex emergency services or bluelight scenarios. In our current research, we have targeted a triad of fundamental, interdependent conceptual issues: delegation, mixed- initiative interaction and adjustable autonomy, that is being used as a basis for developing a principled and well-defined framework for interaction. This can be used to clarify, validate and verify different types of interaction between human operators and UAS systems both theoretically and practically in UAS experimentation with our deployed platforms.
