Vanishing Signatures, Orbit Closure, and the Converse of the Holant Theorem

Abstract
Valiant’s Holant theorem is a powerful tool for algorithms and reductions for counting problems. It states that if two sets ℱ and 𝒢 of tensors (a.k.a. constraint functions or signatures) are related by a holographic transformation, then ℱ and 𝒢 are Holant-indistinguishable, i.e., every tensor network using tensors from ℱ, respectively from 𝒢, contracts to the same value. Xia (ICALP 2010) conjectured the converse of the Holant theorem, but a counterexample was found based on vanishing signatures, those which are Holant-indistinguishable from 0. We prove two near-converses of the Holant theorem using techniques from invariant theory. (I) Holant-indistinguishable ℱ and 𝒢 always admit two sequences of holographic transformations mapping them arbitrarily close to each other, i.e., their GL_q-orbit closures intersect. (II) We show that vanishing signatures are the only true obstacle to a converse of the Holant theorem. As corollaries of the two theorems we obtain the first characterization of homomorphism-indistinguishability over graphs of bounded degree, a long standing open problem, and show that two graphs with invertible adjacency matrices are isomorphic if and only if they are homomorphism-indistinguishable over graphs with maximum degree at most three. We also show that Holant-indistinguishability is complete for a complexity class TOCI introduced by Lysikov and Walter [Vladimir Lysikov and Michael Walter, 2024], and hence hard for graph isomorphism.

New Hardness Results for Low-Rank Matrix Completion

Authors: Dror Chawin and Ishay Haviv

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
The low-rank matrix completion problem asks whether a given real matrix with missing values can be completed so that the resulting matrix has low rank or is close to a low-rank matrix. The completed matrix is often required to satisfy additional structural constraints, such as positive semi-definiteness or a bounded infinity norm. The problem arises in various research fields, including machine learning, statistics, and theoretical computer science, and has broad real-world applications. This paper presents new NP-hardness results for low-rank matrix completion problems. We show that for every sufficiently large integer d and any real number ε ∈ [2^{-O(d)},1/7], given a partial matrix A with exposed values of magnitude at most 1 that admits a positive semi-definite completion of rank d, it is NP-hard to find a positive semi-definite matrix that agrees with each given value of A up to an additive error of at most ε, even when the rank is allowed to exceed d by a multiplicative factor of O (1/(ε²⋅log(1/ε))). This strengthens a result of Hardt, Meka, Raghavendra, and Weitz (COLT, 2014), which applies to multiplicative factors smaller than 2 and to ε that decays polynomially in d. We establish similar NP-hardness results for the case where the completed matrix is constrained to have a bounded infinity norm (rather than be positive semi-definite), for which all previous hardness results rely on complexity assumptions related to the Unique Games Conjecture. Our proofs involve a novel notion of nearly orthonormal representations of graphs, the concept of line digraphs, and bounds on the rank of perturbed identity matrices.

From an Odd Arity Signature to a Holant Dichotomy

Authors: Boning Meng, Juqiu Wang, Mingji Xia, and Jiayi Zheng

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 339, 40th Computational Complexity Conference (CCC 2025)

Abstract
Holant is an essential framework in the field of counting complexity. For over fifteen years, researchers have been clarifying the complexity classification for complex-valued Holant on Boolean domain, a challenge that remains unresolved. In this article, we prove a complexity dichotomy for complex-valued Holant on Boolean domain when a non-trivial signature of odd arity exists. This dichotomy is based on the dichotomy for #EO, and consequently is an FP^NP vs. #P dichotomy as well, stating that each problem is either in FP^NP or #P-hard. Furthermore, we establish a generalized version of the decomposition lemma for complex-valued Holant on Boolean domain. It asserts that each signature can be derived from its tensor product with other signatures, or conversely, the problem itself is in FP^NP. We believe that this result is a powerful method for building reductions in complex-valued Holant, as it is also employed as a pivotal technique in the proof of the aforementioned dichotomy in this article.

The Converse of the Real Orthogonal Holant Theorem

Authors: Ben Young

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
The Holant theorem is a powerful tool for studying the computational complexity of counting problems. Due to the great expressiveness of the Holant framework, a converse to the Holant theorem would itself be a very powerful counting indistinguishability theorem. The most general converse does not hold, but we prove the following, still highly general, version: if any two sets of real-valued signatures are Holant-indistinguishable, then they are equivalent up to an orthogonal transformation. This resolves a partially open conjecture of Xia (2010). Consequences of this theorem include the well-known result that homomorphism counts from all graphs determine a graph up to isomorphism, the classical sufficient condition for simultaneous orthogonal similarity of sets of real matrices, and a combinatorial characterization of sets of simultaneosly orthogonally decomposable (odeco) symmetric tensors.

P-Time Algorithms for Typical #EO Problems

Authors: Boning Meng, Juqiu Wang, and Mingji Xia

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
In this article, we study the computational complexity of counting weighted Eulerian orientations, denoted as #EO. This problem is considered a pivotal scenario in the complexity classification for Holant, a counting framework of great significance. Our results consist of three parts. First, we prove a complexity dichotomy theorem for #EO defined by a set of binary and quaternary signatures, which generalizes the previous dichotomy for the six-vertex model. Second, we prove a dichotomy for #EO defined by a set of so-called pure signatures, which possess the closure property under gadget construction. Finally, we present a polynomial-time algorithm for #EO defined by specific rebalancing signatures, which extends the algorithm for pure signatures to a broader range of problems, including #EO defined by non-pure signatures such as f_40. We also construct a signature f_56 that is not rebalancing, and whether #EO(f_56) is computable in polynomial time remains open.

Modular Counting CSP: Reductions and Algorithms

Authors: Amirhossein Kazeminia and Andrei A. Bulatov

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
The Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) is ubiquitous in various areas of mathematics and computer science. Many of its variations have been studied including the Counting CSP, where the goal is to find the number of solutions to a CSP instance. The complexity of finding the exact number of solutions of a CSP is well understood (Bulatov, 2013, and Dyer and Richerby, 2013) and the focus has shifted to other variations of the Counting CSP such as counting the number of solutions modulo an integer. This problem has attracted considerable attention recently. In the case of CSPs based on undirected graphs Bulatov and Kazeminia (STOC 2022) obtained a complexity classification for the problem of counting solutions modulo p for arbitrary prime p. In this paper we report on the progress made towards a similar classification for the general CSP, not necessarily based on graphs. We identify several features that make the general case very different from the graph case such as a stronger form of rigidity and the structure of automorphisms of powers of relational structures. We provide a solution algorithm in the case p = 2 that works under some additional conditions and prove the hardness of the problem under some assumptions about automorphisms of the powers of the relational structure. We also reduce the general CSP to the case that only uses binary relations satisfying strong additional conditions.

Semi-Supervised Algorithms for Approximately Optimal and Accurate Clustering

Authors: Buddhima Gamlath, Sangxia Huang, and Ola Svensson

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 107, 45th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2018)

Abstract
We study k-means clustering in a semi-supervised setting. Given an oracle that returns whether two given points belong to the same cluster in a fixed optimal clustering, we investigate the following question: how many oracle queries are sufficient to efficiently recover a clustering that, with probability at least (1 - delta), simultaneously has a cost of at most (1 + epsilon) times the optimal cost and an accuracy of at least (1 - epsilon)? We show how to achieve such a clustering on n points with O{((k^2 log n) * m{(Q, epsilon^4, delta / (k log n))})} oracle queries, when the k clusters can be learned with an epsilon' error and a failure probability delta' using m(Q, epsilon',delta') labeled samples in the supervised setting, where Q is the set of candidate cluster centers. We show that m(Q, epsilon', delta') is small both for k-means instances in Euclidean space and for those in finite metric spaces. We further show that, for the Euclidean k-means instances, we can avoid the dependency on n in the query complexity at the expense of an increased dependency on k: specifically, we give a slightly more involved algorithm that uses O{(k^4/(epsilon^2 delta) + (k^{9}/epsilon^4) log(1/delta) + k * m{({R}^r, epsilon^4/k, delta)})} oracle queries. We also show that the number of queries needed for (1 - epsilon)-accuracy in Euclidean k-means must linearly depend on the dimension of the underlying Euclidean space, and for finite metric space k-means, we show that it must at least be logarithmic in the number of candidate centers. This shows that our query complexities capture the right dependencies on the respective parameters.

Improved NP-Inapproximability for 2-Variable Linear Equations

Authors: Johan Håstad, Sangxia Huang, Rajsekar Manokaran, Ryan O’Donnell, and John Wright

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 40, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2015)

Abstract
An instance of the 2-Lin(2) problem is a system of equations of the form "x_i + x_j = b (mod 2)". Given such a system in which it's possible to satisfy all but an epsilon fraction of the equations, we show it is NP-hard to satisfy all but a C*epsilon fraction of the equations, for any C < 11/8 = 1.375 (and any 0 < epsilon <= 1/8). The previous best result, standing for over 15 years, had 5/4 in place of 11/8. Our result provides the best known NP-hardness even for the Unique Games problem, and it also holds for the special case of Max-Cut. The precise factor 11/8 is unlikely to be best possible; we also give a conjecture concerning analysis of Boolean functions which, if true, would yield a larger hardness factor of 3/2. Our proof is by a modified gadget reduction from a pairwise-independent predicate. We also show an inherent limitation to this type of gadget reduction. In particular, any such reduction can never establish a hardness factor C greater than 2.54. Previously, no such limitation on gadget reductions was known.

The Complexity of Weighted Boolean #CSP Modulo k

Authors: Heng Guo, Sangxia Huang, Pinyan Lu, and Mingji Xia

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 9, 28th International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2011)

Abstract
We prove a complexity dichotomy theorem for counting weighted Boolean CSP modulo k for any positive integer $k>1$. This generalizes a theorem by Faben for the unweighted setting. In the weighted setting, there are new interesting tractable problems. We first prove a dichotomy theorem for the finite field case where k is a prime. It turns out that the dichotomy theorem for the finite field is very similar to the one for the complex weighted Boolean #CSP, found by [Cai, Lu and Xia, STOC 2009]. Then we further extend the result to an arbitrary integer k.
