Tight Regret Bounds for Fixed-Price Bilateral Trade

Abstract
We examine fixed-price mechanisms in bilateral trade through the lens of regret minimization. Our main results are twofold. (i) For independent values, a near-optimal Θ̃(T^{2/3}) tight bound for Global Budget Balance fixed-price mechanisms with two-bit/one-bit feedback. (ii) For correlated/adversarial values, a near-optimal Ω(T^{3/4}) lower bound for Global Budget Balance fixed-price mechanisms with two-bit/one-bit feedback, which improves the best known Ω(T^{5/7}) lower bound obtained in the work [Martino Bernasconi et al., 2024] and, up to polylogarithmic factors, matches the 𝒪̃(T^{3/4}) upper bound obtained in the same work. Our work in combination with the previous works [Nicolò Cesa{-}Bianchi et al., 2024; Nicolò Cesa-Bianchi et al., 2024; Yossi Azar et al., 2024; Martino Bernasconi et al., 2024] (essentially) gives a thorough understanding of regret minimization for fixed-price bilateral trade. En route, we have developed two technical ingredients that might be of independent interest: (i) A novel algorithmic paradigm, called fractal elimination, to address one-bit feedback and independent values. (ii) A new lower-bound construction with novel proof techniques, to address the Global Budget Balance constraint and correlated values.

Improving Lagarias-Odlyzko Algorithm for Average-Case Subset Sum: Modular Arithmetic Approach

Authors: Antoine Joux and Karol Węgrzycki

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
Lagarias and Odlyzko (J.ACM 1985) proposed a polynomial-time algorithm for solving "almost all" instances of the Subset Sum problem with n integers of size Ω(Γ_LO), where log₂(Γ_LO) > n² log₂(γ) and γ is a parameter of the lattice basis reduction (γ > √{4/3} for LLL). The algorithm of Lagarias and Odlyzko is a cornerstone of cryptography. However, the theoretical guarantee on the density of feasible instances has remained unimproved for almost 40 years. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that solves "almost all" instances of Subset Sum with integers of size Ω(√{Γ_LO}) after a single call to lattice reduction. Additionally, our approach allows solving the Subset Sum problem for multiple targets, whereas the previous method could handle only one target per call to lattice basis reduction. We introduce a modular arithmetic approach to the Subset Sum problem, leveraging lattice reduction to solve a linear system modulo a suitably large prime. By analyzing the lengths of the LLL-reduced basis vectors of both the primal and dual lattices simultaneously, we show that density guarantees can be improved.

New Algorithms for Pigeonhole Equal Subset Sum

Authors: Ce Jin, Ryan Williams, and Stan Zhang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We study the Pigeonhole Equal Subset Sum problem, which is a total-search variant of the Subset Sum problem introduced by Papadimitriou (1994): we are given a set of n positive integers {w₁,…,w_n} with the additional restriction that ∑_{i=1}^n w_i < 2ⁿ - 1, and want to find two different subsets A,B ⊆ [n] such that ∑_{i∈A} w_i = ∑_{i∈B} w_i. Very recently, Jin and Wu (ICALP 2024) gave a randomized algorithm solving Pigeonhole Equal Subset Sum in O^*(2^{0.4n}) time, beating the classical meet-in-the-middle algorithm with O^*(2^{n/2}) runtime. In this paper, we refine Jin and Wu’s techniques to improve the runtime even further to O^*(2^{n/3}).

q-Partitioning Valuations: Exploring the Space Between Subadditive and Fractionally Subadditive Valuations

Authors: Kiril Bangachev and S. Matthew Weinberg

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
For a set M of m elements, we define a decreasing chain of classes of normalized monotone-increasing valuation functions from 2^M to ℝ_{≥ 0}, parameterized by an integer q ∈ [2,m]. For a given q, we refer to the class as q-partitioning. A valuation function is subadditive if and only if it is 2-partitioning, and fractionally subadditive if and only if it is m-partitioning. Thus, our chain establishes an interpolation between subadditive and fractionally subadditive valuations. We show that this interpolation is smooth (q-partitioning valuations are "nearly" (q-1)-partitioning in a precise sense, Theorem 6), interpretable (the definition arises by analyzing the core of a cost-sharing game, à la the Bondareva-Shapley Theorem for fractionally subadditive valuations, Section 3.1), and non-trivial (the class of q-partitioning valuations is distinct for all q, Proposition 3). For domains where provable separations exist between subadditive and fractionally subadditive, we interpolate the stronger guarantees achievable for fractionally subadditive valuations to all q ∈ {2,…, m}. Two highlights are the following: 1) An Ω ((log log q)/(log log m))-competitive posted price mechanism for q-partitioning valuations. Note that this matches asymptotically the state-of-the-art for both subadditive (q = 2) [Paul Dütting et al., 2020], and fractionally subadditive (q = m) [Feldman et al., 2015]. 2) Two upper-tail concentration inequalities on 1-Lipschitz, q-partitioning valuations over independent items. One extends the state-of-the-art for q = m to q < m, the other improves the state-of-the-art for q = 2 for q > 2. Our concentration inequalities imply several corollaries that interpolate between subadditive and fractionally subadditive, for example: 𝔼[v(S)] ≤ (1 + 1/log q)Median[v(S)] + O(log q). To prove this, we develop a new isoperimetric inequality using Talagrand’s method of control by q points, which may be of independent interest. We also discuss other probabilistic inequalities and game-theoretic applications of q-partitioning valuations, and connections to subadditive MPH-k valuations [Tomer Ezra et al., 2019].

New Pseudorandom Generators and Correlation Bounds Using Extractors

Authors: Vinayak M. Kumar

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 325, 16th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2025)

Abstract
We establish new correlation bounds and pseudorandom generators for a collection of computation models. These models are all natural generalization of structured low-degree 𝔽₂-polynomials that we did not have correlation bounds for before. In particular: - We construct a PRG for width-2 poly(n)-length branching programs which read d bits at a time with seed length 2^O(√{log n}) ⋅ d²log²(1/ε). This comes quadratically close to optimal dependence in d and log(1/ε). Improving the dependence on n would imply nontrivial PRGs for log n-degree 𝔽₂-polynomials. The previous PRG by Bogdanov, Dvir, Verbin, and Yehudayoff had an exponentially worse dependence on d with seed length of O(dlog n + d2^dlog(1/ε)). - We provide the first nontrivial (and nearly optimal) correlation bounds and PRGs against size-n^Ω(log n) AC⁰ circuits with either n^{.99} SYM gates (computing an arbitrary symmetric function) or n^{.49} THR gates (computing an arbitrary linear threshold function). This is a generalization of sparse 𝔽₂-polynomials, which can be simulated by an AC⁰ circuit with one parity gate at the top. Previous work of Servedio and Tan only handled n^{.49} SYM gates or n^{.24} THR gates, and previous work of Lovett and Srinivasan only handled polynomial-size circuits. - We give exponentially small correlation bounds against degree-n^O(1) 𝔽₂-polynomials which are set-multilinear over some arbitrary partition of the input into n^{1-O(1)} parts (noting that at n parts, we recover all low degree polynomials). This vastly generalizes correlation bounds against degree-d polynomials which are set-multilinear over a fixed partition into d blocks, which were established by Bhrushundi, Harsha, Hatami, Kopparty, and Kumar. The common technique behind all of these results is to fortify a hard function with the right type of extractor to obtain stronger correlation bounds for more general models of computation. Although this technique has been used in previous work, they rely on the model simplifying drastically under random restrictions. We view our results as a proof of concept that such fortification can be done even for classes that do not enjoy such behavior.

RANDOM
Subset Sum in Time 2^{n/2} / poly(n)

Authors: Xi Chen, Yaonan Jin, Tim Randolph, and Rocco A. Servedio

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 275, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2023)

Abstract
A major goal in the area of exact exponential algorithms is to give an algorithm for the (worst-case) n-input Subset Sum problem that runs in time 2^{(1/2 - c)n} for some constant c > 0. In this paper we give a Subset Sum algorithm with worst-case running time O(2^{n/2} ⋅ n^{-γ}) for a constant γ > 0.5023 in standard word RAM or circuit RAM models. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first improvement on the classical "meet-in-the-middle" algorithm for worst-case Subset Sum, due to Horowitz and Sahni, which can be implemented in time O(2^{n/2}) in these memory models [Horowitz and Sahni, 1974]. Our algorithm combines a number of different techniques, including the "representation method" introduced by Howgrave-Graham and Joux [Howgrave-Graham and Joux, 2010] and subsequent adaptations of the method in Austrin, Kaski, Koivisto, and Nederlof [Austrin et al., 2016], and Nederlof and Węgrzycki [Jesper Nederlof and Karol Wegrzycki, 2021], and "bit-packing" techniques used in the work of Baran, Demaine, and Pǎtraşcu [Baran et al., 2005] on subquadratic algorithms for 3SUM.

Learning Reserve Prices in Second-Price Auctions

Authors: Yaonan Jin, Pinyan Lu, and Tao Xiao

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 251, 14th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2023)

Abstract
This paper proves the tight sample complexity of Second-Price Auction with Anonymous Reserve, up to a logarithmic factor, for each of all the value distribution families studied in the literature: [0,1]-bounded, [1,H]-bounded, regular, and monotone hazard rate (MHR). Remarkably, the setting-specific tight sample complexity poly(ε^{-1}) depends on the precision ε ∈ (0, 1), but not on the number of bidders n ≥ 1. Further, in the two bounded-support settings, our learning algorithm allows correlated value distributions. In contrast, the tight sample complexity Θ̃(n) ⋅ poly(ε^{-1}) of Myerson Auction proved by Guo, Huang and Zhang (STOC 2019) has a nearly-linear dependence on n ≥ 1, and holds only for independent value distributions in every setting. We follow a similar framework as the Guo-Huang-Zhang work, but replace their information theoretical arguments with a direct proof.

RANDOM
Fourier Growth of Structured 𝔽₂-Polynomials and Applications

Authors: Jarosław Błasiok, Peter Ivanov, Yaonan Jin, Chin Ho Lee, Rocco A. Servedio, and Emanuele Viola

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 207, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2021)

Abstract
We analyze the Fourier growth, i.e. the L₁ Fourier weight at level k (denoted L_{1,k}), of various well-studied classes of "structured" m F₂-polynomials. This study is motivated by applications in pseudorandomness, in particular recent results and conjectures due to [Chattopadhyay et al., 2019; Chattopadhyay et al., 2019; Eshan Chattopadhyay et al., 2020] which show that upper bounds on Fourier growth (even at level k = 2) give unconditional pseudorandom generators. Our main structural results on Fourier growth are as follows: - We show that any symmetric degree-d m F₂-polynomial p has L_{1,k}(p) ≤ Pr [p = 1] ⋅ O(d)^k. This quadratically strengthens an earlier bound that was implicit in [Omer Reingold et al., 2013]. - We show that any read-Δ degree-d m F₂-polynomial p has L_{1,k}(p) ≤ Pr [p = 1] ⋅ (k Δ d)^{O(k)}. - We establish a composition theorem which gives L_{1,k} bounds on disjoint compositions of functions that are closed under restrictions and admit L_{1,k} bounds. Finally, we apply the above structural results to obtain new unconditional pseudorandom generators and new correlation bounds for various classes of m F₂-polynomials.
