The Complexity of Resilience for Digraph Queries

Abstract
We prove a complexity dichotomy for the resilience problem for unions of conjunctive digraph queries (i.e., for existential positive sentences over the signature {R} of directed graphs). Specifically, for every union μ of conjunctive digraph queries, the following problem is in P or NP-complete: given a directed multigraph G and a natural number u, can we remove u edges from G so that G ⊧ ¬ μ? In fact, we verify a more general dichotomy conjecture from [Bodirsky et al., 2024] for all resilience problems in the special case of directed graphs, and show that for such unions of queries μ there exists a countably infinite (`dual') valued structure Δ_μ which either primitively positively constructs 1-in-3-3-SAT, and hence the resilience problem for μ is NP-complete by general principles, or has a pseudo cyclic canonical fractional polymorphism, and the resilience problem for μ is in P.

Three Fundamental Questions in Modern Infinite-Domain Constraint Satisfaction

Authors: Michael Pinsker, Jakub Rydval, Moritz Schöbi, and Christoph Spiess

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
The Feder-Vardi dichotomy conjecture for Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) with finite templates, confirmed independently by Bulatov and Zhuk, has an extension to certain well-behaved infinite templates due to Bodirsky and Pinsker which remains wide open. We provide answers to three fundamental questions on the scope of the Bodirsky-Pinsker conjecture. Our first two main results provide two simplifications of this scope, one of structural, and the other one of algebraic nature. The former simplification implies that the conjecture is equivalent to its restriction to templates without algebraicity, a crucial assumption in the most powerful classification methods. The latter yields that the higher-arity invariants of any template within its scope can be assumed to be essentially injective, and any algebraic condition characterizing any complexity class within the conjecture closed under Datalog reductions must be satisfiable by injections, thus lifting the mystery of the better applicability of certain conditions over others. Our third main result uses the first one to show that any non-trivially tractable template within the scope serves, up to a Datalog-computable modification of it, as the witness of the tractability of a non-finitely tractable finite-domain Promise Constraint Satisfaction Problem (PCSP) by the so-called sandwich method. This generalizes a recent result of Mottet and provides a strong hitherto unknown connection between the Bodirsky-Pinsker conjecture and finite-domain PCSPs.

Limitations of Affine Integer Relaxations for Solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Authors: Moritz Lichter and Benedikt Pago

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We show that various recent algorithms for finite-domain constraint satisfaction problems (CSP), which are based on solving their affine integer relaxations, do not solve all tractable and not even all Maltsev CSPs. This rules them out as candidates for a universal polynomial-time CSP algorithm. The algorithms are ℤ-affine k-consistency, BLP+AIP, BA^{k}, and CLAP. We thereby answer a question by Brakensiek, Guruswami, Wrochna, and Živný [Joshua Brakensiek et al., 2020] whether a constant level of BA^{k}solves all tractable CSPs in the negative: Indeed, not even a sublinear level k suffices. We also refute a conjecture by Dalmau and Opršal [Víctor Dalmau and Jakub Opršal, 2024] (LICS 2024) that every CSP is either solved by ℤ-affine k-consistency or admits a Datalog reduction from 3-colorability. For the cohomological k-consistency algorithm, that is also based on affine relaxations, we show that it correctly solves our counterexample but fails on an NP-complete template.

Nonuniform Deterministic Finite Automata over Finite Algebraic Structures

Authors: Paweł M. Idziak, Piotr Kawałek, and Jacek Krzaczkowski

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Nonuniform deterministic finite automata (NUDFA) over monoids were invented by Barrington in [Barrington, 1985] to study boundaries of nonuniform constant-memory computation. Later, results on these automata helped to identify interesting classes of groups for which equation satisfiability problem (PolSat) is solvable in (probabilistic) polynomial time [Mikael Goldmann and Alexander Russell, 2002; Idziak et al., 2022]. Based on these results, we present a full characterization of groups, for which the identity checking problem (called PolEqv) has a probabilistic polynomial-time algorithm. We also go beyond groups, and propose how to generalise the notion of NUDFA to arbitrary finite algebraic structures. We study satisfiability of these automata in this more general setting. As a consequence, we present a full description of finite algebras from congruence modular varieties for which testing circuit equivalence CEqv can be solved by a probabilistic polynomial-time procedure. In our proofs we use two computational complexity assumptions: randomized Expotential Time Hypothesis and Constant Degree Hypothesis.

Circuit Equivalence in 2-Nilpotent Algebras

Authors: Piotr Kawałek, Michael Kompatscher, and Jacek Krzaczkowski

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 289, 41st International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2024)

Abstract
The circuit equivalence problem Ceqv(A) of a finite algebra A is the problem of deciding whether two circuits over A compute the same function or not. This problem not only generalises the equivalence problem for Boolean circuits, but is also of interest in universal algebra, as it models the problem of checking identities in A. In this paper we prove that Ceqv(A) ∈ 𝖯, if A is a finite 2-nilpotent algebra from a congruence modular variety.

The Subpower Membership Problem of 2-Nilpotent Algebras

Authors: Michael Kompatscher

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 289, 41st International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2024)

Abstract
The subpower membership problem SMP(𝐀) of a finite algebraic structure 𝐀 asks whether a given partial function from Aⁿ to A can be interpolated by a term operation of 𝐀, or not. While this problem can be EXPTIME-complete in general, Willard asked whether it is always solvable in polynomial time if 𝐀 is a Mal'tsev algebra. In particular, this includes many important structures studied in abstract algebra, such as groups, quasigroups, rings, Boolean algebras. In this paper we give an affirmative answer to Willard’s question for a big class of 2-nilpotent Mal'tsev algebras. We furthermore develop tools that might be essential in answering the question for general nilpotent Mal'tsev algebras in the future.

Short Definitions in Constraint Languages

Authors: Jakub Bulín and Michael Kompatscher

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 272, 48th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2023)

Abstract
A first-order formula is called primitive positive (pp) if it only admits the use of existential quantifiers and conjunction. Pp-formulas are a central concept in (fixed-template) constraint satisfaction since CSP(Γ) can be viewed as the problem of deciding the primitive positive theory of Γ, and pp-definability captures gadget reductions between CSPs. An important class of tractable constraint languages Γ is characterized by having few subpowers, that is, the number of n-ary relations pp-definable from Γ is bounded by 2^p(n) for some polynomial p(n). In this paper we study a restriction of this property, stating that every pp-definable relation is definable by a pp-formula of polynomial length. We conjecture that the existence of such short definitions is actually equivalent to Γ having few subpowers, and verify this conjecture for a large subclass that, in particular, includes all constraint languages on three-element domains. We furthermore discuss how our conjecture imposes an upper complexity bound of co-NP on the subpower membership problem of algebras with few subpowers.

Hrushovski’s Encoding and ω-Categorical CSP Monsters

Authors: Pierre Gillibert, Julius Jonušas, Michael Kompatscher, Antoine Mottet, and Michael Pinsker

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 168, 47th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2020)

Abstract
We produce a class of ω-categorical structures with finite signature by applying a model-theoretic construction - a refinement of an encoding due to Hrushosvki - to ω-categorical structures in a possibly infinite signature. We show that the encoded structures retain desirable algebraic properties of the original structures, but that the constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) associated with these structures can be badly behaved in terms of computational complexity. This method allows us to systematically generate ω-categorical templates whose CSPs are complete for a variety of complexity classes of arbitrarily high complexity, and ω-categorical templates that show that membership in any given complexity class cannot be expressed by a set of identities on the polymorphisms. It moreover enables us to prove that recent results about the relevance of topology on polymorphism clones of ω-categorical structures also apply for CSP templates, i.e., structures in a finite language. Finally, we obtain a concrete algebraic criterion which could constitute a description of the delineation between tractability and NP-hardness in the dichotomy conjecture for first-order reducts of finitely bounded homogeneous structures.

A Complexity Dichotomy for Poset Constraint Satisfaction

Authors: Michael Kompatscher and Trung Van Pham

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 66, 34th Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2017)

Abstract
We determine the complexity of all constraint satisfaction problems over partial orders, in particular we show that every such problem is NP-complete or can be solved in polynomial time. This result generalises the complexity dichotomy for temporal constraint satisfaction problems by Bodirsky and Kára. We apply the so called universal-algebraic approach together with tools from model theory and Ramsey theory to prove our result. In the course of this analysis we also establish a structural dichotomy regarding the model theoretic properties of the reducts of the random partial order.
