On the Complexity of Language Membership for Probabilistic Words

Abstract
We study the membership problem to context-free languages L (CFLs) on probabilistic words, that specify for each position a probability distribution on the letters (assuming independence across positions). Our task is to compute, given a probabilistic word, what is the probability that a word drawn according to the distribution belongs to L. This problem generalizes the problem of counting how many words of length n belong to L, or of counting how many completions of a partial word belong to L. We show that this problem is in polynomial time for unambiguous context-free languages (uCFLs), but can be #P-hard already for unions of two linear uCFLs. More generally, we show that the problem is in polynomial time for so-called poly-slicewise-unambiguous languages, where given a length n we can tractably compute an uCFL for the words of length n in the language. This class includes some inherently ambiguous languages, and implies the tractability of bounded CFLs and of languages recognized by unambiguous polynomial-time counter automata; but we show that the problem can be #P-hard for nondeterministic counter automata, even for Parikh automata with a single counter. We then introduce classes of circuits from knowledge compilation which we use for tractable counting, and show that this covers the tractability of poly-slicewise-unambiguous languages and of some CFLs that are not poly-slicewise-unambiguous. Extending these circuits with negation further allows us to show tractability for the language of primitive words, and for the language of concatenations of two palindromes. We finally show the conditional undecidability of the meta-problem that asks, given a CFG, whether the probabilistic membership problem for that CFG is tractable or #P-hard.

A Pumping-Like Lemma for Languages over Infinite Alphabets

Authors: Yoav Danieli

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
We prove a kind of a pumping lemma for languages accepted by one-register alternating finite-memory automata. As a corollary, we obtain that the set of lengths of words in such languages is semi-linear.

One-Clock Synthesis Problems

Authors: Sławomir Lasota, Mathieu Lehaut, Julie Parreaux, and Radosław Piórkowski

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
We study a generalisation of Büchi-Landweber games to the timed setting. The winning condition is specified by a non-deterministic timed automaton, and one of the players can elapse time. We perform a systematic study of synthesis problems in all variants of timed games, depending on which player’s winning condition is specified, and which player’s strategy (or controller, a finite-memory strategy) is sought. As our main result we prove ubiquitous undecidability in all the variants, both for strategy and controller synthesis, already for winning conditions specified by one-clock automata. This strengthens and generalises previously known undecidability results. We also fully characterise those cases where finite memory is sufficient to win, namely existence of a strategy implies existence of a controller. All our results are stated in the timed setting, while analogous results hold in the data setting where one-clock automata are replaced by one-register ones.

A Logic for Fresh Labelled Transition Systems

Authors: Mohamed H. Bandukara and Nikos Tzevelekos

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
We introduce a Hennessy-Milner logic with recursion for Fresh Labelled Transition Systems (FLTSs). These are nominal labelled transition systems which keep track of the history, i.e. of data values seen so far, and can model fresh data generation. In particular, FLTSs generalise the computations of Fresh-Register Automata, which in turn can be seen as a "regular" class of history-tracking automata operating on infinite input alphabets. The logic we introduce is a modal mu-calculus equipped with infinite disjunctions over arbitrary and fresh data values respectively, while its recursion is parameterised on vectors of data values. It can express a variety of properties, such as the existence of an infinite path of distinct data values, the absence of paths where values are repeated, or the existence of a finite path where some taint property is violated. We study the model-checking problem and its complexity via a reduction to parity games and, using nominal sets techniques, provide an exponential upper bound for it.

Well-Founded Coalgebras Meet Kőnig’s Lemma

Authors: Henning Urbat and Thorsten Wißmann

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
Kőnig’s lemma is a fundamental result about trees with countless applications in mathematics and computer science. In contrapositive form, it states that if a tree is finitely branching and well-founded (i.e. has no infinite paths), then it is finite. We present a coalgebraic version of Kőnig’s lemma featuring two dimensions of generalization: from finitely branching trees to coalgebras for a finitary endofunctor H, and from the base category of sets to a locally finitely presentable category ℂ, such as the category of posets, nominal sets, or convex sets. Our coalgebraic Kőnig’s lemma states that, under mild assumptions on ℂ and H, every well-founded coalgebra for H is the directed join of its well-founded subcoalgebras with finitely generated state space - in particular, the category of well-founded coalgebras is locally presentable. As applications, we derive versions of Kőnig’s lemma for graphs in a topos as well as for nominal and convex transition systems. Additionally, we show that the key construction underlying the proof gives rise to two simple constructions of the initial algebra (equivalently, the final recursive coalgebra) for the functor H: The initial algebra is both the colimit of all well-founded and of all recursive coalgebras with finitely presentable state space. Remarkably, this result holds even in settings where well-founded coalgebras form a proper subclass of recursive ones. The first construction of the initial algebra is entirely new, while for the second one our approach yields a short and transparent new correctness proof.

Parametric Disjunctive Timed Networks

Authors: Étienne André, Swen Jacobs, and Engel Lefaucheux

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
We consider distributed systems with an arbitrary number of processes, modelled by timed automata that communicate through location guards: a process can take a guarded transition if at least one other process is in a given location. In this work, we introduce parametric disjunctive timed networks, where each timed automaton may contain timing parameters, i.e., unknown constants. We investigate two problems: deciding the emptiness of the set of parameter valuations for which 1) a given location is reachable for at least one process (local property), and 2) a global state is reachable where all processes are in a given location (global property). Our main positive result is that the first problem is decidable for networks of processes with a single clock and without invariants; this result holds for arbitrarily many timing parameters - a setting with few known decidability results. However, it becomes undecidable when invariants are allowed, or when considering global properties, even for systems with a single parameter. This highlights the significant expressive power of invariants in these networks. Additionally, we exhibit further decidable subclasses by restraining the syntax of guards and invariants.

Kamp Theorem for Pomset Languages of Higher Dimensional Automata

Authors: Emily Clement, Enzo Erlich, and Jérémy Ledent

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
Temporal logics are a powerful tool to specify properties of computational systems. For concurrent programs, Higher Dimensional Automata (HDA) are a very expressive model of non-interleaving concurrency. HDA recognize languages of partially ordered multisets, or pomsets. Recent work has shown that Monadic Second Order (MSO) logic is as expressive as HDA for pomset languages. In the case of words, Kamp’s theorem states that First Order (FO) logic is as expressive as Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). In this paper, we extend this result to pomsets. To do so, we first investigate the class of pomset languages that are definable in FO. As expected, this is a strict subclass of MSO-definable languages. Then, we define a Linear Temporal Logic for pomsets (LTL_Poms), and show that it is equivalent to FO.

Unboundedness Problems for Formal Languages (Invited Talk)

Authors: Georg Zetzsche

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 360, 45th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2025)

Abstract
Informally, unboundedness problems are decision problems that ask about the existence of infinitely many words (satisfying certain properties) in a formal language. For example: Is a given language infinite? Or: Does a given language have super-polynomial growth? These came into focus in recent years because of their connections to downward closure computation and separability problems. Although unboundedness problems may seem difficult at first, it turns out that there are techniques that are at the same time conceptually very simple, but also apply to a surprisingly wide variety of language classes. The talk will survey recent results (and techniques) concerning unboundedness problems.

Unreliability in Practical Subclasses of Communicating Systems

Authors: Amrita Suresh and Nobuko Yoshida

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 360, 45th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2025)

Abstract
Systems of communicating automata are prominent models for peer-to-peer message-passing over unbounded channels, but in the general scenario, most verification properties are undecidable. To address this issue, two decidable subclasses, Realisable with Synchronous Communication (RSC) and k-Multiparty Compatibility (k-MC), were proposed in the literature, with corresponding verification tools developed and applied in practice. Unfortunately, both RSC and k-MC are not resilient under failures: (1) their decidability relies on the assumption of perfect channels and (2) most standard protocols do not satisfy RSC or k-MC under failures. To address these limitations, this paper studies the resilience of RSC and k-MC under two distinct failure models: interference and crash-stop failures. For interference, we relax the conditions of RSC and k-MC and prove that the inclusions of these relaxed properties remain decidable under interference, preserving their known complexity bounds. We then propose a novel crash-handling communicating system that captures wider behaviours than existing multiparty session types (MPST) with crash-stop failures. We study a translation of MPST with crash-stop failures into this system integrating RSC and k-MC properties, and establish their decidability results. Finally, by verifying representative protocols from the literature using RSC and k-MC tools extended to interferences, we evaluate the relaxed systems and demonstrate their resilience.

Higher-Order Timed Automata and Tail Recursion

Authors: Florian Bruse

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 355, 32nd International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2025)

Abstract
Timed Automata (TA) are a popular formalism to model systems in dense linear time. However, due to their finite state-space, they can only model systems with a finitary logical behavior. There are extensions to e.g., timed pushdown systems and timed recursive state machines. Higher-Order Recursion Schemes (HORS) are another popular model for infinite-state, non-regular systems, naturally stratified by their type-theoretic order. We recently introduced Real-Time Recursion schemes as an approximation of HORS to real-time systems. This paper updates Real-Time Recursion Schemes into Higher-Order Timed Automata, a formalism that defines a tree-shaped timed automaton, which is more suitable to model actual systems. We show that the model-checking problem against the timed version of the modal mu-calculus exhibits the expected complexity bounds, i.e., an increase by one exponential towards the untimed version. We also show that, in the presence of tail recursion, half an exponential can be recovered, mirroring similar gains in the untimed setting. We also give a matching lower bound for the special case of order-1 HORTA. We conjecture that this can be generalized for all orders.

Abstract
We investigate the reachability problem in symmetric vector addition systems with states (vass), where transitions are invariant under a group of permutations of coordinates. One extremal case, the trivial groups, yields general vass. In another extremal case, the symmetric groups, we show that the reachability problem can be solved in PSpace, regardless of the dimension of input vass (to be contrasted with Ackermannian complexity in general vass). We also consider other groups, in particular alternating and cyclic ones. Furthermore, motivated by the open status of the reachability problem in data vass, we estimate the gain in complexity when the group arises as a combination of the trivial and symmetric groups.

Register Automata with Permutations

Abstract
We propose Permutation Deterministic Register Automata (pDRAs), a deterministic register automaton model where we allow permutations of registers in transitions. The model enables minimal canonical representations and pDRAs can be tested for equivalence in polynomial time. The complexity of minimization is between GI (the complexity of graph isomorphism) and NP. We then introduce a subclass of pDRAs, called register automata with fixed permutation policy, where the register permutation discipline is stipulated globally. This class generalizes the model proposed by Benedikt, Ley and Puppis in 2010, and we show that it also admits minimal and canonical representations, based on a finite-index word equivalence relation. As an application, we show that for any regular data language L, the minimal register automaton with fixed permutation policy recognizing L can be actively learned in polynomial time using oracles for membership, equivalence and data-memorability queries. We show that all the oracles can be implemented in polynomial time, and so this yields a polynomial time minimization algorithm.

Regular Model Checking for Systems with Effectively Regular Reachability Relation

Authors: Javier Esparza and Valentin Krasotin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
Regular model checking is a well-established technique for the verification of regular transition systems (RTS): transition systems whose initial configurations and transition relation can be effectively encoded as regular languages. In 2008, To and Libkin studied RTSs in which the reachability relation (the reflexive and transitive closure of the transition relation) is also effectively regular, and showed that the recurrent reachability problem (whether a regular set L of configurations is reached infinitely often) is polynomial in the size of RTS and the transducer for the reachability relation. We extend the work of To and Libkin by studying the decidability and complexity of verifying almost-sure reachability and recurrent reachability - that is, whether L is reachable or recurrently reachable with probability 1. We then apply our results to the more common case in which only a regular overapproximation of the reachability relation is available. In particular, we extend recent complexity results on verifying safety using regular abstraction frameworks - a technique recently introduced by Czerner, the authors, and Welzel-Mohr - to liveness and almost-sure properties.
