Abstract
We introduce a new complexity measure for cocomparability graphs of posets or in other words, intersection graphs of piecewise linear functions, the bend number. We prove that cocomparability graphs of bounded bend number are not too plentiful and give two hierarchies of classes of cocomparability graphs, depending on whether the piecewise linear functions are restricted to slopes of ±1 (diagonal case) or not (general case). These hierarchies give a gradation between permutation graphs and cocomparability graphs.

A Research Framework to Develop a Real-Time Synchrony Index to Monitor Team Cohesion and Performance in Long-Duration Space Exploration

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 130, Advancing Human-Computer Interaction for Space Exploration (SpaceCHI 2025)

Abstract
As humanity prepares for long-distance space exploration, optimizing group performance, the ability of a group to achieve its goals efficiently, is critical. Astronaut crews will endure isolation, confinement, and operational stress, making group synchrony - the alignment of behaviors, emotions, and physiological states - a key factor in mission success. Synchrony influences team cohesion, performance, and resilience, necessitating effective crew management strategies. This paper proposes a framework for a real-time, unobtrusive index of group synchrony to support astronauts and mission control. Research indicates that team cohesion fluctuates in isolated environments, with reduced communication and interpersonal conflicts emerging over time. A system tracking synchrony could mitigate these issues, providing proactive support and improving remote management. Additionally, it could serve as a cognitive and physiological feedback tool for astronauts and a decision-making aid for mission control, enhancing well-being and efficiency. Our approach integrates behavioral and physiological synchrony measures to assess team cohesion and performance. We propose a multi-modal synchrony index combining movement coordination, communication patterns, and physiological signals such as heart rate, electrodermal activity, and EEG. This index will be validated across different tasks to ensure applicability across diverse mission scenarios. By developing a robust synchrony index, we address a fundamental challenge in space missions: sustaining team effectiveness under extreme conditions. Beyond space exploration, our findings could benefit high-risk, high-isolation teams in submarine crews, polar expeditions, and remote research groups. Our collaboration with the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, the Institut de Médecine et de Physiologie Spatiales, and the Toulouse University Hospital marks the first step, with experimental data collection starting this year. Ultimately, this research fosters more adaptive, responsive, and resilient teams for future space missions.

Subsequence-Based Indices for Genome Sequence Analysis

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 132, From Strings to Graphs, and Back Again: A Festschrift for Roberto Grossi's 60th Birthday (2025)

Abstract
Compact indices are a fundamental tool in string analysis, even more so in bioinformatics, where genomic sequences can reach billions in length. This paper presents some recent results in which Roberto Grossi has been involved, showing how some of these indices do more than just efficiently represent data, but rather are able to bring out salient information within it, which can be exploited for their downstream analysis. Specifically, we first review a recently-introduced method [Guerrini et al., 2023] that employs the Burrows-Wheeler Transform to build reasonably accurate phylogenetic trees in an assembly-free scenario. We then describe a recent practical tool [Buzzega et al., 2025] for indexing Maximal Common Subsequences between strings, which can enable analysis of genomic sequence similarity. Experimentally, we show that the results produced by the one index are consistent with the expectations about the results of the other index.

Induced Disjoint Paths Without an Induced Minor

Authors: Pierre Aboulker, Édouard Bonnet, Timothé Picavet, and Nicolas Trotignon

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We exhibit a new obstacle to the nascent algorithmic theory for classes excluding an induced minor. We indeed show that on the class of string graphs - which avoids the 1-subdivision of, say, K₅ as an induced minor - Induced 2-Disjoint Paths is NP-complete. So, while k-Disjoint Paths, for a fixed k, is polynomial-time solvable in general graphs, the absence of a graph as an induced minor does not make its induced variant tractable, even for k = 2. This answers a question of Korhonen and Lokshtanov [SODA '24], and complements a polynomial-time algorithm for Induced k-Disjoint Paths in classes of bounded genus by Kobayashi and Kawarabayashi [SODA '09]. In addition to being string graphs, our produced hard instances are subgraphs of a constant power of bounded-degree planar graphs, hence have bounded twin-width and bounded maximum degree. We also leverage our new result to show that there is a fixed subcubic graph H such that deciding if an input graph contains H as an induced subdivision is NP-complete. Until now, all the graphs H for which such a statement was known had a vertex of degree at least 4. This answers a question by Chudnovsky, Seymour, and Trotignon [JCTB '13], and by Le [JGT '19]. Finally we resolve another question of Korhonen and Lokshtanov by exhibiting a subcubic graph H without two adjacent degree-3 vertices and such that deciding if an input n-vertex graph contains H as an induced minor is NP-complete, and unless the Exponential-Time Hypothesis fails, requires time 2^{Ω(√ n)}. This complements an algorithm running in subexponential time 2^{Õ(n^{2/3})} by these authors [SODA '24] under the same technical condition.

On the Complexity of Telephone Broadcasting from Cacti to Bounded Pathwidth Graphs

Authors: Aida Aminian, Shahin Kamali, Seyed-Mohammad Seyed-Javadi, and Sumedha

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
In Telephone Broadcasting, the goal is to disseminate a message from a given source vertex of an input graph to all other vertices in the minimum number of rounds, where at each round, an informed vertex can send the message to at most one of its uninformed neighbors. For general graphs of n vertices, the problem is NP-complete, and the best existing algorithm has an approximation factor of 𝒪(log n/ log log n). The existence of a constant factor approximation for the general graphs is still unknown. In this paper, we study the problem in two simple families of sparse graphs, namely, cacti and graphs of bounded pathwidth. There have been several efforts to understand the complexity of the problem in cactus graphs, mostly establishing the presence of polynomial-time solutions for restricted families of cactus graphs (e.g., [Čevnik and Žerovnik, 2017; Ehresmann, 2021; Harutyunyan et al., 2009; Harutyunyan and Maraachlian, 2007; Harutyunyan and Maraachlian, 2008; Harutyunyan et al., 2023]). Despite these efforts, the complexity of the problem in arbitrary cactus graphs remained open. We settle this question by establishing the NP-completeness of telephone broadcasting in cactus graphs. For that, we show the problem is NP-complete in a simple subfamily of cactus graphs, which we call snowflake graphs. These graphs are not only cacti but also have pathwidth 2. These results establish that, despite being polynomial-time solvable in trees, the problem becomes NP-complete in very simple extensions of trees. On the positive side, we present constant-factor approximation algorithms for the studied families of graphs, namely, an algorithm with an approximation factor of 2 for cactus graphs and an approximation factor of 𝒪(1) for graphs of bounded pathwidth.

Cluster Editing on Cographs and Related Classes

Authors: Manuel Lafond, Alitzel López Sánchez, and Weidong Luo

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
In the Cluster Editing problem, sometimes known as (unweighted) Correlation Clustering, we must insert and delete a minimum number of edges to achieve a graph in which every connected component is a clique. Owing to its applications in computational biology, social network analysis, machine learning, and others, this problem has been widely studied for decades and is still undergoing active research. There exist several parameterized algorithms for general graphs, but little is known about the complexity of the problem on specific classes of graphs. Among the few important results in this direction, if only deletions are allowed, the problem can be solved in polynomial time on cographs, which are the P₄-free graphs. However, the complexity of the broader editing problem on cographs is still open. We show that even on a very restricted subclass of cographs, the problem is NP-hard, W[1]-hard when parameterized by the number p of desired clusters, and that time n^o(p/log p) is forbidden under the ETH. This shows that the editing variant is substantially harder than the deletion-only case, and that hardness holds for the many superclasses of cographs (including graphs of clique-width at most 2, perfect graphs, circle graphs, permutation graphs). On the other hand, we provide an almost tight upper bound of time n^O(p), which is a consequence of a more general n^O(cw⋅p) time algorithm, where cw is the clique-width. Given that forbidding P₄s maintains NP-hardness, we look at {P₄, C₄}-free graphs, also known as trivially perfect graphs, and provide a cubic-time algorithm for this class.

On Weighting Schemes for Gene Order Analysis

Authors: Matthias Bernt, Nicolas Wieseke, and Martin Middendorf

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 34, German Conference on Bioinformatics 2013

Abstract
Gene order analysis aims at extracting phylogenetic information from the comparison of the order and orientation of the genes on the genomes of different species. This can be achieved by computing parsimonious rearrangement scenarios, i.e. to determine a sequence of rearrangements events that transforms one given gene order into another such that the sum of weights of the included rearrangement events is minimal. In this sequence only certain types of rearrangements, given by the rearrangement model, are admissible and weights are assigned with respect to the rearrangement type. The choice of a suitable rearrangement model and corresponding weights for the included rearrangement types is important for the meaningful reconstruction. So far the analysis of weighting schemes for gene order analysis has not been considered sufficiently. In this paper weighting schemes for gene order analysis are considered for two rearrangement models: 1) inversions, transpositions, and inverse transpositions; 2) inversions, block interchanges, and inverse transpositions. For both rearrangement models we determined properties of the weighting functions that exclude certain types of rearrangements from parsimonious rearrangement scenarios.
