Barendregt’s Theory of the λ-Calculus, Refreshed and Formalized

Abstract
Barendregt’s book on the untyped λ-calculus refines the inconsistent view of β-divergence as representation of the undefined via the key concept of head reduction. In this paper, we put together recent revisitations of some key theorems laid out in Barendregt’s book, and we formalize them in the Abella proof assistant. Our work provides a compact and refreshed presentation of the core of the book. The formalization faithfully mimics pen-and-paper proofs. Two interesting aspects are the manipulation of contexts for the study of contextual equivalence and a formal alternative to the informal trick at work in Takahashi’s proof of the genericity lemma. As a by-product, we obtain an alternative definition of contextual equivalence that does not mention contexts.

A Sound and Complete Characterization of Fair Asynchronous Session Subtyping

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
Session types are abstractions of communication protocols enabling the static analysis of message-passing processes. Refinement notions for session types are key to support safe forms of process substitution while preserving their compatibility with the rest of the system. Recently, a fair refinement relation for asynchronous session types has been defined allowing the anticipation of message outputs with respect to an unbounded number of message inputs. This refinement is useful to capture common patterns in communication protocols that take advantage of asynchrony. However, while the semantic (à la testing) definition of such refinement is straightforward, its characterization has proved to be quite challenging. In fact, only a sound but not complete characterization is known so far. In this paper we close this open problem by presenting a sound and complete characterization of asynchronous fair refinement for session types. We relate this characterization to those given in the literature for synchronous session types by leveraging a novel labelled transition system of session types that embeds their asynchronous semantics.

First-Order Store and Visibility in Name-Passing Calculi

Authors: Daniel Hirschkoff, Iwan Quémerais, and Davide Sangiorgi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
The π-calculus is the paradigmatical name-passing calculus. While being purely name-passing, it allows the representation of higher-order functions and store. We study how π-calculus processes can be controlled so that computations can only involve storage of first-order values. The discipline is enforced by a type system that is based on the notion of visibility, coming from game semantics. We discuss the impact of visibility on the behavioural theory. We propose characterisations of may-testing and barbed equivalence, based on (variants of) trace equivalence and labelled bisimilarity, in the case where computation is sequential, and in the case where computation is well-bracketed.

CluStRE: Streaming Graph Clustering with Multi-Stage Refinement

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 338, 23rd International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2025)

Abstract
We present CluStRE, a novel streaming graph clustering algorithm that balances computational efficiency with high-quality clustering using multi-stage refinement. Unlike traditional in-memory clustering approaches, CluStRE processes graphs in a streaming setting, significantly reducing memory overhead while leveraging re-streaming and evolutionary heuristics to improve solution quality. Our method dynamically constructs a quotient graph, enabling modularity-based optimization while efficiently handling large-scale graphs. We introduce multiple configurations of CluStRE to provide trade-offs between speed, memory consumption, and clustering quality. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that CluStRE improves solution quality by 89.8%, operates 2.6× faster, and uses less than two-thirds of the memory required by the state-of-the-art streaming clustering algorithm on average. Moreover, our strongest mode enhances solution quality by up to 150% on average. With this, CluStRE achieves comparable solution quality to in-memory algorithms, i.e. over 96% of the quality of clustering approaches, including Louvain, effectively bridging the gap between streaming and traditional clustering methods.

Fair Termination of Asynchronous Binary Sessions

Authors: Luca Padovani and Gianluigi Zavattaro

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 333, 39th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2025)

Abstract
We study a theory of asynchronous session types ensuring that well-typed processes terminate under a suitable fairness assumption. Fair termination entails starvation freedom and orphan message freedom namely that all messages, including those that are produced early taking advantage of asynchrony, are eventually consumed. The theory is based on a novel fair asynchronous subtyping relation for session types that is coarser than the existing ones. The type system is also the first of its kind that is firmly rooted in linear logic: fair asynchronous subtyping is incorporated as a natural generalization of the cut and axiom rules of linear logic and asynchronous communication is modeled through a suitable set of commuting conversions and of deep cut reductions in linear logic proofs.

Contrasting Deadlock-Free Session Processes

Authors: Juan C. Jaramillo and Jorge A. Pérez

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 333, 39th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2025)

Abstract
Deadlock freedom is a crucial property for message-passing programs. Over the years, several different type systems for concurrent processes that ensure deadlock freedom have been proposed; this diversity raises the question of how they compare. We address this question, considering two type systems not covered in prior work: Kokke et al.’s HCP, a type system based on a linear logic with hypersequents, and Padovani’s priority-based type system for asynchronous processes, dubbed 𝖯. Their distinctive features make formal comparisons relevant and challenging. Our findings are two-fold: (1) the hypersequent setting does not drastically change the class of deadlock-free processes induced by linear logic, and (2) we relate the classes of deadlock-free processes induced by HCP and 𝖯. We prove that our results hold under both synchronous and asynchronous communication. Our results provide new insights into the essential mechanisms involved in statically avoiding deadlocks in concurrency.

Subtyping Context-Free Session Types

Authors: Gil Silva, Andreia Mordido, and Vasco T. Vasconcelos

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 279, 34th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2023)

Abstract
Context-free session types describe structured patterns of communication on heterogeneously typed channels, allowing the specification of protocols unconstrained by tail recursion. The enhanced expressive power provided by non-regular recursion comes, however, at the cost of the decidability of subtyping, even if equivalence is still decidable. We present an approach to subtyping context-free session types based on a novel kind of observational preorder we call XYZW-simulation, which generalizes XY-simulation (also known as covariant-contravariant simulation) and therefore also bisimulation and plain simulation. We further propose a subtyping algorithm that we prove to be sound, and present an empirical evaluation in the context of a compiler for a programming language. Due to the general nature of the simulation relation upon which it is built, this algorithm may also find applications in other domains.

On the Fair Termination of Client-Server Sessions

Authors: Luca Padovani

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 269, 28th International Conference on Types for Proofs and Programs (TYPES 2022)

Abstract
Client-server sessions are based on a variation of the traditional interpretation of linear logic propositions as session types in which non-linear channels (those regulating the interaction between a pool of clients and a single server) are typed by coexponentials instead of the usual exponentials. Coexponentials enable the modeling of racing interactions, whereby clients compete to interact with a single server whose internal state (and thus the offered service) may change as the server processes requests sequentially. In this work we present a fair termination result for CSLL^∞, a core calculus of client-server sessions. We design a type system such that every well-typed term corresponds to a valid derivation in μMALL^∞, the infinitary proof theory of linear logic with least and greatest fixed points. We then establish a correspondence between reductions in the calculus and principal reductions in μMALL^∞. Fair termination in CSLL^∞ follows from cut elimination in μMALL^∞.

An Infinitary Proof Theory of Linear Logic Ensuring Fair Termination in the Linear π-Calculus

Authors: Luca Ciccone and Luca Padovani

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 243, 33rd International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2022)

Abstract
Fair termination is the property of programs that may diverge "in principle" but that terminate "in practice", i.e. under suitable fairness assumptions concerning the resolution of non-deterministic choices. We study a conservative extension of μMALL^∞, the infinitary proof system of the multiplicative additive fragment of linear logic with least and greatest fixed points, such that cut elimination corresponds to fair termination. Proof terms are processes of πLIN, a variant of the linear π-calculus with (co)recursive types into which binary and (some) multiparty sessions can be encoded. As a result we obtain a behavioral type system for πLIN (and indirectly for session calculi through their encoding into πLIN) that ensures fair termination: although well-typed processes may engage in arbitrarily long interactions, they are fairly guaranteed to eventually perform all pending actions.

Fair Termination of Multiparty Sessions

Authors: Luca Ciccone, Francesco Dagnino, and Luca Padovani

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 222, 36th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2022)

Abstract
There exists a broad family of multiparty sessions in which the progress of one session participant is not unconditional, but depends on the choices performed by other participants. These sessions fall outside the scope of currently available session type systems that guarantee progress. In this work we propose the first type system ensuring that well-typed multiparty sessions, including those exhibiting the aforementioned dependencies, fairly terminate. Fair termination is termination under a fairness assumption that disregards those interactions deemed unfair and therefore unrealistic. Fair termination, combined with the usual safety properties ensured within sessions, not only is desirable per se, but it entails progress and enables a compositional form of static analysis such that the well-typed composition of fairly terminating sessions results in a fairly terminating program.

Inference Systems with Corules for Fair Subtyping and Liveness Properties of Binary Session Types

Authors: Luca Ciccone and Luca Padovani

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 198, 48th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2021)

Abstract
Many properties of communication protocols stem from the combination of safety and liveness properties. Characterizing such combined properties by means of a single inference system is difficult because of the fundamentally different techniques (coinduction and induction, respectively) usually involved in defining and proving them. In this paper we show that Generalized Inference Systems allow for simple and insightful characterizations of (at least some of) these combined inductive/coinductive properties for dependent session types. In particular, we illustrate the role of corules in characterizing weak termination (the property of protocols that can always eventually terminate), fair compliance (the property of interactions that can always be extended to reach client satisfaction) and also fair subtyping, a liveness-preserving refinement relation for session types.

Abstract
Active object languages offer an attractive trade-off between low-level, preemptive concurrency and fully distributed actors: syntactically identifiable atomic code segments and asynchronous calls are the basis of cooperative concurrency, still permitting interleaving, but nevertheless being mechanically analyzable. The challenge is to reconcile local static analysis of atomic segments with the global scheduling constraints it depends on. Here, we propose an approximate, hybrid approach; At compile-time we perform a local static analysis: later, any run not complying to a global specification is excluded via runtime checks. That specification is expressed in a type-theoretic language inspired by session types. The approach reverses the usual (first global, then local) order of analysis and, thereby, supports analysis of open distributed systems.

Probabilistic Analysis of Binary Sessions

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 171, 31st International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2020)

Abstract
We study a probabilistic variant of binary session types that relate to a class of Finite-State Markov Chains. The probability annotations in session types enable the reasoning on the probability that a session terminates successfully, for some user-definable notion of successful termination. We develop a type system for a simple session calculus featuring probabilistic choices and show that the success probability of well-typed processes agrees with that of the sessions they use. To this aim, the type system needs to track the propagation of probabilistic choices across different sessions.

Mailbox Types for Unordered Interactions

Authors: Ugo de'Liguoro and Luca Padovani

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 109, 32nd European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2018)

Abstract
We propose a type system for reasoning on protocol conformance and deadlock freedom in networks of processes that communicate through unordered mailboxes. We model these networks in the mailbox calculus, a mild extension of the asynchronous pi-calculus with first-class mailboxes and selective input. The calculus subsumes the actor model and allows us to analyze networks with dynamic topologies and varying number of processes possibly mixing different concurrency abstractions. Well-typed processes are deadlock free and never fail because of unexpected messages. For a non-trivial class of them, junk freedom is also guaranteed. We illustrate the expressiveness of the calculus and of the type system by encoding instances of non-uniform, concurrent objects, binary sessions extended with joins and forks, and some known actor benchmarks.
