Upward Book Embeddings of Partitioned Digraphs

Abstract
In 1999, Heath, Pemmaraju, and Trenk [SIAM J. Comput. 28(4), 1999] extended the classic notion of book embeddings to digraphs, introducing the concept of upward book embeddings, in which the vertices must appear along the spine in a topological order and the edges are partitioned into pages, so that no two edges in the same page cross. For a partitioned digraph G = (V, ⋃^k_{i=1} E_i), that is, a digraph whose edge set is partitioned into k subsets, an upward book embedding is required to assign edges to pages as prescribed by the given partition. In a companion paper, Heath and Pemmaraju [SIAM J. Comput. 28(5), 1999] proved that the problem of testing the existence of an upward book embedding of a partitioned digraph is linear-time solvable for k = 1 and recently Akitaya, Demaine, Hesterberg, and Liu [GD, 2017] have shown the problem NP-complete for k ≥ 3. In this paper, we study upward book embeddings of partitioned digraphs and focus on the unsolved case k = 2. Our first main result is a novel characterization of the upward embeddings that support an upward book embedding in two pages. We exploit this characterization in several ways, and obtain a rich picture of the complexity landscape of the problem. First, we show that the problem remains NP-complete when k = 2, thus closing the complexity gap for the problem. Second, we show that, for an n-vertex partitioned digraph with a prescribed planar embedding, the existence of an upward book embedding that respects the given planar embedding can be tested in O(n log³ n) time. Finally, leveraging the SPQ(R)-tree decomposition of biconnected graphs into triconnected components, we present a cubic-time testing algorithm for biconnected directed partial 2-trees.

Linear Layouts Revisited: Stacks, Queues, and Exact Algorithms

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
In spite of the extensive study of stack and queue layouts, many fundamental questions remain open concerning the complexity-theoretic frontiers for computing stack and queue layouts. A stack (resp. queue) layout places vertices along a line and assigns edges to pages so that no two edges on the same page are crossing (resp. nested). We provide three new algorithms which together substantially expand our understanding of these problems: 1) A fixed-parameter algorithm for computing minimum-page stack and queue layouts w.r.t. the vertex integrity of an n-vertex graph G. This result is motivated by an open question in the literature and generalizes the previous algorithms parameterizing by the vertex cover number of G. The proof relies on a newly developed Ramsey pruning technique. Vertex integrity intuitively measures the vertex deletion distance to a subgraph with only small connected components. 2) An n^𝒪(q 𝓁) algorithm for computing 𝓁-page stack and queue layouts of page width at most q. This is the first algorithm avoiding a double-exponential dependency on the parameters. The page width of a layout measures the maximum number of edges one needs to cross on any page to reach the outer face. 3) A 2^𝒪(n) algorithm for computing 1-page queue layouts. This improves upon the previously fastest n^𝒪(n) algorithm and can be seen as a counterpart to the recent subexponential algorithm for computing 2-page stack layouts [ICALP'24], but relies on an entirely different technique.

Covering and Partitioning of Split, Chain and Cographs with Isometric Paths

Abstract
Given a graph G, an isometric path cover of a graph is a set of isometric paths that collectively contain all vertices of G. An isometric path cover 𝒞 of a graph G is also an isometric path partition if no vertex lies in two paths in 𝒞. Given a graph G, and an integer k, the objective of Isometric Path Cover (resp. Isometric Path Partition) is to decide whether G has an isometric path cover (resp. partition) of cardinality k. In this paper, we show that Isometric Path Partition is NP-complete even on split graphs, i.e. graphs whose vertex set can be partitioned into a clique and an independent set. In contrast, we show that both Isometric Path Cover and Isometric Path Partition admit polynomial time algorithms on cographs (graphs with no induced P₄) and chain graphs (bipartite graphs with no induced 2K₂).

A Tight Subexponential-Time Algorithm for Two-Page Book Embedding

Authors: Robert Ganian, Haiko Müller, Sebastian Ordyniak, Giacomo Paesani, and Mateusz Rychlicki

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
A book embedding of a graph is a drawing that maps vertices onto a line and edges to simple pairwise non-crossing curves drawn into "pages", which are half-planes bounded by that line. Two-page book embeddings, i.e., book embeddings into 2 pages, are of special importance as they are both NP-hard to compute and have specific applications. We obtain a 2^𝒪(√n) algorithm for computing a book embedding of an n-vertex graph on two pages - a result which is asymptotically tight under the Exponential Time Hypothesis. As a key tool in our approach, we obtain a single-exponential fixed-parameter algorithm for the same problem when parameterized by the treewidth of the input graph. We conclude by establishing the fixed-parameter tractability of computing minimum-page book embeddings when parameterized by the feedback edge number, settling an open question arising from previous work on the problem.

Dynamic Data Structures for Parameterized String Problems

Authors: Jędrzej Olkowski, Michał Pilipczuk, Mateusz Rychlicki, Karol Węgrzycki, and Anna Zych-Pawlewicz

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 254, 40th International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2023)

Abstract
We revisit classic string problems considered in the area of parameterized complexity, and study them through the lens of dynamic data structures. That is, instead of asking for a static algorithm that solves the given instance efficiently, our goal is to design a data structure that efficiently maintains a solution, or reports a lack thereof, upon updates in the instance. We first consider the CLOSEST STRING problem, for which we design randomized dynamic data structures with amortized update times d^𝒪(d) and |Σ|^𝒪(d), respectively, where Σ is the alphabet and d is the assumed bound on the maximum distance. These are obtained by combining known static approaches to CLOSEST STRING with color-coding. Next, we note that from a result of Frandsen et al. [J. ACM'97] one can easily infer a meta-theorem that provides dynamic data structures for parameterized string problems with worst-case update time of the form 𝒪_k(log log n), where k is the parameter in question and n is the length of the string. We showcase the utility of this meta-theorem by giving such data structures for problems DISJOINT FACTORS and EDIT DISTANCE. We also give explicit data structures for these problems, with worst-case update times 𝒪(k 2^k log log n) and 𝒪(k²log log n), respectively. Finally, we discuss how a lower bound methodology introduced by Amarilli et al. [ICALP'21] can be used to show that obtaining update time 𝒪(f(k)) for DISJOINT FACTORS and EDIT DISTANCE is unlikely already for a constant value of the parameter k.
