Zero-Knowledge Authenticator for Blockchain: Policy-Private and Obliviously Updateable

Abstract
Transaction details and participant identities on the blockchain are often publicly exposed. In this work, we posit that blockchain’s transparency should not come at the cost of privacy. To that end, we introduce zero-knowledge authenticators (zkAt), a new cryptographic primitive for privacy-preserving authentication on public blockchains. zkAt utilizes zero-knowledge proofs to enable users to authenticate transactions, while keeping the underlying authentication policies private. Prior solutions for such policy-private authentication required the use of threshold signatures, which can only hide the threshold access structure itself. In comparison, zkAt provides privacy for arbitrarily complex authentication policies, and offers a richer interface even within the threshold access structure by, for instance, allowing for the combination of signatures under distinct signature schemes. In order to construct zkAt, we design a compiler that transforms the popular Groth16 non-interactive zero knowledge (NIZK) proof system into a NIZK with equivocable verification keys, a property that we define in this work. Then, for any zkAt constructed using proof systems with this new property, we show that all public information must be independent of the policy, thereby achieving policy-privacy. Next, we give an extension of zkAt, called zkAt^+ wherein, assuming a trusted authority, policies can be updated obliviously in the sense that a third-party learns no new information when a policy is updated by the policy issuer. We also give a theoretical construction for zkAt^+ using recursive NIZKs, and explore the integration of zkAt into modern blockchains. Finally, to evaluate their feasibility, we implement both our schemes for a specific threshold access structure. Our findings show that zkAt achieves comparable performance to traditional threshold signatures, while also attaining privacy for significantly more complex policies with very little overhead.

Human-AI Interaction in Space: Insights from a Mars Analog Mission with the Harmony Large Language Model

Abstract
The operational complexities of space missions require reliable, context-aware technical assistance for astronauts, especially when technical expertise is not available onboard and communication with Earth is delayed or limited. In this context, Large Language Models present a promising opportunity to augment human capabilities. To this end, we present Harmony, a model designed to provide astronauts with real-time technical assistance, fostering human-AI collaboration during analog missions. We report empirical results from an experiment involving seven analog astronauts that evaluated their user experience with Harmony in both a conventional environment and an isolated, confined, and extreme physical setting at the Mars Desert Research Station over four sessions, and discuss how the Mars analog environment impacted their experience. Our findings reveal the extent to which human-AI interactions evolve across various user experience dimensions and suggest how Harmony can be further adapted to suit extreme environments, with a focus on SpaceCHI.

A Postcard from Mars: Exploring Interplanetary Communications in Virtual Reality

Abstract
In this paper we present an Immersive Speculative Enactment focused on the theme of interplanetary communications. These are a novel approach extending conventional Speculative Enactments to Virtual Reality. We created a narrative-based scenario in which participants played the role of human colonists on either Mars or the Moon, to explore a possible future in which interplanetary communication becomes a necessity. To enact this scenario, we created a VR interactive experience to elicit feedback on the idea of communicating across planets. Through an exploratory qualitative analysis of this immersive enactment, we found that while the future envisioned was seen as too distant to prompt realistic behaviour from all participants, the enactment helped us and the participants to reflect on the experience. We discuss these findings, drawing potential implications for the improvement of the feeling of "really being there" even in implausible situations and further contribute reflections on the role of ISEs in space-related scenarios.

Mixed-Initiative Dynamic Autonomy Through Variable Levels of Immersion and Control (MIDA-VIC): A New Paradigm for Collaborative Robotic Teleoperation in Space Exploration

Abstract
In this position paper, we propose the new control paradigm and conceptual framework MIDA-VIC for collaborative robotic teleoperation in space exploration and beyond. Such teleoperation is a complex and demanding team effort with distributed responsibilities that require both efficient human-robot and human-human collaboration. To address these challenges, we propose a new paradigm of mixed-initiative dynamic autonomy for robotic teleoperation. It exploits recent advances in human-computer interaction (HCI), human-robot interaction (HRI), augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), and artificial intelligence (AI) research. By integrating methods from multiple fields, our paradigm allows human operators to choose their preferred level of immersion, from traditional 2D graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to fully immersive AR/VR environments. It also supports a dynamic adjustment of the level of control, ranging from direct motor commands (e.g., using a joystick) to high-level task delegation using AI (e.g., instructing the robot via natural language to select a path or explore autonomously). In addition, we propose a mixed-initiative paradigm in which a robot can also take the initiative, request human assistance, and propose the specific level of immersion and control to the human operator that it currently considers useful for effective and efficient collaboration.

An Efficient Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme for Minimizing the Total Weighted Completion Time on Uniformly Related Machines

Abstract
We study a classic scheduling problem on uniformly related machines for which we show an efficient polynomial time approximation scheme (EPTAS), where an EPTAS is a fast and practical approximation scheme. For a desired approximation ratio of 1+ε for ε > 0, the running time of an EPTAS is a function of ε multiplied by a polynomial function of the input length. New methods and techniques are essential in developing such improved approximation schemes, and their design is a primary goal of this research agenda. We present an EPTAS for the scheduling problem of a set of jobs on uniformly related machines so as to minimize the total weighted completion time. The problem is NP-hard in the strong sense, and therefore an EPTAS is the best possible approximation scheme for the problem, unless P=NP. Prior to our work, only a PTAS was known for the problem, while an EPTAS was known only for the special case of identical machines.

Deciding Robust Instances of an Escape Problem for Dynamical Systems in Euclidean Space

Abstract
We study the problem of deciding whether a point escapes a closed subset of ℝ^d under the iteration of a continuous map f : ℝ^d → ℝ^d in the bit-model of real computation. We give a sound partial decision method for this problem which is complete in the sense that its halting set contains the halting set of all sound partial decision methods for the problem. Equivalently, our decision method terminates on all problem instances whose answer is robust under all sufficiently small perturbations of the function. We further show that the halting set of our algorithm is dense in the set of all problem instances. While our algorithm applies to general continuous functions, we demonstrate that it also yields complete decision methods for much more rigid function families: affine linear systems and quadratic complex polynomials. In the latter case, completeness is subject to the density of hyperbolicity conjecture in complex dynamics. This in particular yields an alternative proof of Hertling’s (2004) conditional answer to a question raised by Penrose (1989) regarding the computability of the Mandelbrot set.

Expressivity of Bisimulation Pseudometrics over Analytic State Spaces

Abstract
A Markov decision process (MDP) is a state-based dynamical system capable of describing probabilistic behaviour with rewards. In this paper, we view MDPs as coalgebras living in the category of analytic spaces, a very general class of measurable spaces. Note that analytic spaces were already studied in the literature on labelled Markov processes and bisimulation relations. Our results are twofold. First, we define bisimulation pseudometrics over such coalgebras using the framework of fibrations. Second, we develop a quantitative modal logic for such coalgebras and prove a quantitative form of Hennessy-Milner theorem in this new setting stating that the bisimulation pseudometric corresponds to the logical distance induced by modal formulae.

Safety and Strong Completeness via Reducibility for Many-Valued Coalgebraic Dynamic Logics

Abstract
We present a coalgebraic framework for studying generalisations of dynamic modal logics such as PDL and game logic in which both the propositions and the semantic structures can take values in an algebra 𝐀 of truth-degrees. More precisely, we work with coalgebraic modal logic via 𝐀-valued predicate liftings where 𝐀 is an FLew-algebra, and interpret actions (abstracting programs and games) as 𝖥-coalgebras where the functor 𝖥 represents some type of 𝐀-weighted system. We also allow combinations of crisp propositions with 𝐀-weighted systems and vice versa. We introduce coalgebra operations and tests, with a focus on operations which are reducible in the sense that modalities for composed actions can be reduced to compositions of modalities for the constituent actions. We prove that reducible operations are safe for bisimulation and behavioural equivalence, and prove a general strong completeness result, from which we obtain new strong completeness results for 𝟐-valued iteration-free PDL with 𝐀-valued accessibility relations when 𝐀 is a finite chain, and for many-valued iteration-free game logic with many-valued strategies based on finite Lukasiewicz logic.

Analysis of EDF for Real-Time Multiprocessor Systems with Resource Sharing

Abstract
The classic Earliest Deadline First (EDF) algorithm is widely studied and used due to its simplicity and strong theoretical performance, but has not been rigorously analyzed for systems where jobs may execute critical sections protected by shared locks. Analyzing such systems is often challenging due to unpredictable delays caused by contention. In this paper, we propose a straightforward generalization of EDF, called EDF-Block. In this generalization, the critical sections are executed non-preemptively, but scheduling and lock acquisition priorities are based on EDF. We establish lower bounds on the speed augmentation required for any non-clairvoyant scheduler (EDF-Block is an example of non-clairvoyant schedulers) and for EDF-Block, showing that EDF-Block requires at least 4.11× speed augmentation for jobs and 4× for tasks. We then provide an upper bound analysis, demonstrating that EDF-Block requires speedup of at most 6 to schedule all feasible job and task sets.

Towards Ordinal Data Science

Abstract
Order is one of the main instruments to measure the relationship between objects in (empirical) data. However, compared to methods that use numerical properties of objects, the amount of ordinal methods developed is rather small. One reason for this is the limited availability of computational resources in the last century that would have been required for ordinal computations. Another reason - particularly important for this line of research - is that order-based methods are often seen as too mathematically rigorous for applying them to real-world data. In this paper, we will therefore discuss different means for measuring and ‘calculating’ with ordinal structures - a specific class of directed graphs - and show how to infer knowledge from them. Our aim is to establish Ordinal Data Science as a fundamentally new research agenda. Besides cross-fertilization with other cornerstone machine learning and knowledge representation methods, a broad range of disciplines will benefit from this endeavor, including, psychology, sociology, economics, web science, knowledge engineering, scientometrics.

Network Investment Games with Wardrop Followers

Abstract
We study a two-sided network investment game consisting of two sets of players, called providers and users. The game is set in two stages. In the first stage, providers aim to maximize their profit by investing in bandwidth of cloud computing services. The investments of the providers yield a set of usable services for the users. In the second stage, each user wants to process a task and therefore selects a bundle of services so as to minimize the total processing time. We assume the total processing time to be separable over the chosen services and the processing time of each service to depend on the utilization of the service and the installed bandwidth. We provide insights on how competition between providers affects the total costs of the users and show that every game on a series-parallel graph can be reduced to an equivalent single edge game when analyzing the set of subgame perfect Nash equilibria.

Power-Set Functors and Saturated Trees

Abstract
We combine ideas coming from several fields, including modal logic, coalgebra, and set theory. Modally saturated trees were introduced by K. Fine in 1975. We give a new purely combinatorial formulation of modally saturated trees, and we prove that they form the limit of the final omega-op-chain of the finite power-set functor Pf. From that, we derive an alternative proof of J. Worrell's description of the final coalgebra as the coalgebra of all strongly extensional, finitely branching trees. In the other direction, we represent the final coalgebra for Pf in terms of certain maximal consistent sets in the modal logic K. We also generalize Worrell's result to M-labeled trees for a commutative monoid M, yielding a final coalgebra for the corresponding functor Mf studied by H. P. Gumm and T. Schröder. We introduce the concept of an i-saturated tree for all ordinals i, and then prove that the i-th step in the final chain of the power set functor consists of all i-saturated trees. This leads to a new description of the final coalgebra for the restricted power-set functors Plambda (of subsets of cardinality smaller than lambda).
