Coherent Tietze Transformations of 1-Polygraphs in Homotopy Type Theory

Authors: Samuel Mimram and Émile Oleon

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
Polygraphs play a fundamental role in algebra, geometry, and computer science, by generalizing group presentations to higher-dimensional structures and encoding coherence for those. They have recently been adapted by Kraus and von Raumer to the setting of homotopy type theory, where they are useful to define and study higher inductive types. Here, we develop the theory of 1-dimensional polygraphs, which correspond to presentations of sets in homotopy type theory. This requires us to introduce a dedicated notion of Tietze transformation, generalizing their well-known counterpart in group theory: the equivalence generated by those transformations characterizes situations where two 1-polygraphs present the same set. We also show a homotopy transfer theorem, which provides a way to transport coherence structures from one 1-polygraph to another. This work lays the foundations for a general theory of polygraphs in arbitrary dimensions, which should be useful for instance to define and study coherent group presentations, allowing for synthetic (co)homology computations. Most of the results in the article have been formalized with the Agda proof assistant using the cubical HoTT library.

Branch Sequentialization in Quantum Polytime

Authors: Emmanuel Hainry, Romain Péchoux, and Mário Silva

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
Quantum algorithms leverage the use of quantumly-controlled data in order to achieve computational advantage. This implies that the programs use constructs depending on quantum data and not just classical data such as measurement outcomes. Current compilation strategies for quantum control flow involve compiling the branches of a quantum conditional, either in-depth or in-width, which in general leads to circuits of exponential size. This problem is coined as the branch sequentialization problem. We introduce and study a compilation technique for avoiding branch sequentialization on a language that is sound and complete for quantum polynomial time, thus, improving on existing polynomial-size-preserving compilation techniques.

homotopy.io: A Proof Assistant for Finitely-Presented Globular n-Categories

Authors: Nathan Corbyn, Lukas Heidemann, Nick Hu, Chiara Sarti, Calin Tataru, and Jamie Vicary

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 299, 9th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2024)

Abstract
We present the proof assistant homotopy.io for working with finitely-presented semistrict higher categories. The tool runs in the browser with a point-and-click interface, allowing direct manipulation of proof objects via a graphical representation. We describe the user interface and explain how the tool can be used in practice. We also describe the essential subsystems of the tool, including collapse, contraction, expansion, typechecking, and layout, as well as key implementation details including data structure encoding, memoisation, and rendering. These technical innovations have been essential for achieving good performance in a resource-constrained setting.

Sheaf Semantics of Termination-Insensitive Noninterference

Authors: Jonathan Sterling and Robert Harper

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 228, 7th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2022)

Abstract
We propose a new sheaf semantics for secure information flow over a space of abstract behaviors, based on synthetic domain theory: security classes are open/closed partitions, types are sheaves, and redaction of sensitive information corresponds to restricting a sheaf to a closed subspace. Our security-aware computational model satisfies termination-insensitive noninterference automatically, and therefore constitutes an intrinsic alternative to state of the art extrinsic/relational models of noninterference. Our semantics is the latest application of Sterling and Harper’s recent re-interpretation of phase distinctions and noninterference in programming languages in terms of Artin gluing and topos-theoretic open/closed modalities. Prior applications include parametricity for ML modules, the proof of normalization for cubical type theory by Sterling and Angiuli, and the cost-aware logical framework of Niu et al. In this paper we employ the phase distinction perspective twice: first to reconstruct the syntax and semantics of secure information flow as a lattice of phase distinctions between "higher" and "lower" security, and second to verify the computational adequacy of our sheaf semantics with respect to a version of Abadi et al.’s dependency core calculus to which we have added a construct for declassifying termination channels.

A Classical Groupoid Model for Quantum Networks

Authors: David Reutter and Jamie Vicary

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 72, 7th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2017)

Abstract
We give a mathematical analysis of a new type of classical computer network architecture, intended as a model of a new technology that has recently been proposed in industry. Our approach is based on groubits, generalizations of classical bits based on groupoids. This network architecture allows the direct execution of a number of protocols that are usually associated with quantum networks, including teleportation, dense coding and secure key distribution.

A 2-Categorical Approach to Composing Quantum Structures

Authors: David Reutter and Jamie Vicary

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 72, 7th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2017)

Abstract
We present an infinite number of construction schemes for quantum structures, including unitary error bases, Hadamard matrices, quantum Latin squares and controlled families, many of which have not previously been described. Our results rely on the type structure of biunitary connections, 2-categorical structures which play a central role in the theory of planar algebras. They have an attractive graphical calculus which allows simple correctness proofs for the constructions we present. We apply these techniques to construct a unitary error basis that cannot be built using any previously known method.

Globular: An Online Proof Assistant for Higher-Dimensional Rewriting

Authors: Krzysztof Bar, Aleks Kissinger, and Jamie Vicary

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 52, 1st International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2016)

Abstract
This article introduces Globular, an online proof assistant for the formalization and verification of proofs in higher-dimensional category theory. The tool produces graphical visualizations of higher-dimensional proofs, assists in their construction with a point-and-click interface, and performs type checking to prevent incorrect rewrites. Hosted on the web, it has a low barrier to use, and allows hyperlinking of formalized proofs directly from research papers. It allows the formalization of proofs from logic, topology and algebra which are not formalizable by other methods, and we give several examples.
