Abstract
Streaming graph partitioners enable resource-efficient and massively scalable partitioning, but one-pass assignment heuristics are highly sensitive to stream order and often yield substantially higher edge cuts than in-memory methods. We present BuffCut, a buffered streaming partitioner that narrows this quality gap, particularly when stream ordering is adversarial, by combining prioritized buffering with batch-wise multilevel assignment. BuffCut maintains a bounded priority buffer to delay poorly informed decisions and regulate the order in which nodes are considered for assignment. It incrementally constructs high-locality batches of configurable size by iteratively inserting the highest-priority nodes from the buffer into the batch, effectively recovering locality structure from the stream. Each batch is then assigned via a multilevel partitioning algorithm. Experiments on diverse real-world and synthetic graphs show that BuffCut consistently outperforms state-of-the-art buffered streaming methods. Compared to the strongest prioritized buffering baseline, BuffCut achieves 20.8% fewer edge cuts while running 2.9× faster and using 11.3× less memory. Against the next-best batched method, it reduces edge cut by 15.8% with only modest overheads of 1.8× runtime and 1.09× memory.

SwiftQueue: Optimizing Low-Latency Applications with Swift Packet Queuing

Authors: Siddhant Ray, Xi Jiang, Jack Luo, Nick Feamster, and Junchen Jiang

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 139, 1st New Ideas in Networked Systems (NINeS 2026)

Abstract
Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput (L4S), as an emerging router-queue management technique, has seen steady deployment in the industry. An L4S-enabled router assigns each packet to the queue based on the packet header marking. Currently, L4S employs per-flow queue selection, i.e., all packets of a flow are marked the same way and thus use the same queues, even though each packet is marked separately. However, this may hurt tail latency and latency-sensitive applications because transient congestion and queue buildups may only affect a fraction of packets in a flow. We present SwiftQueue, a new L4S queue-selection strategy in which a sender uses a novel per-packet latency predictor to pinpoint which packets likely have latency spikes or drops. The insight is that many packet-level latency variations result from complex interactions among recent packets at shared router queues. Yet, these intricate packet-level latency patterns are hard to learn efficiently by traditional models. Instead, SwiftQueue uses a custom Transformer, which is well-studied for its expressiveness on sequential patterns, to predict the next packet’s latency based on the latencies of recently received ACKs. Based on the predicted latency of each outgoing packet, SwiftQueue’s sender dynamically marks the L4S packet header to assign packets to potentially different queues, even within the same flow. Using real network traces, we show that SwiftQueue is 45-65% more accurate in predicting latency and its variations than state-of-art methods. Based on its latency prediction, SwiftQueue reduces the tail latency for L4S-enabled flows by 36-45%, compared with the existing L4S queue-selection method.

A Modularity-Driven Framework for Unraveling Congestion Centers with Enhanced Spatial-Semantic Features

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 346, 13th International Conference on Geographic Information Science (GIScience 2025)

Abstract
The propagation of traffic congestion is a complicated spatiotemporal phenomenon in urban networks. Extensive studies mainly relied on dynamic Bayesian network or deep learning approaches. However, they often struggle to adapt seamlessly to diverse data granularities, limiting their applicability. In this study, we propose a modularity-driven method to unravel the spatiotemporal congestion propagation centers, effectively addressing temporal granularity challenges through the use of the fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Our framework distinguishes itself due to its capacity to integrate enhanced spatial-semantic features while eliminating temporal granularity dependence, which consists of two data-driven modules. One is adaptive adjacency matrix learning module, which captures the spatiotemporal relationship from evolving congestion graphs by fusing node degree, spatial proximity, and the FFT of traffic state indices. The other one is local search module, which employs local dominance principles to unravel the congestion propagation centers. We validate our proposed methodology on the large-scale traffic networks in New York City, the United States. An ablation study on the dataset reveals that the combination of the three features achieves the highest modularity scores of 0.65. The contribution of our work is to provide a novel way to infer the propagation centers of traffic congestion, and reveals the flexibility of extending our framework at temporal scales. The network resilience and dynamic evolution of the identified congestion centers can provide implications for actional decisions.

Real-Time System Evaluation Techniques: A Systematic Mapping Study

Authors: Tilmann L. Unte and Sebastian Altmeyer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 335, 37th Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems (ECRTS 2025)

Abstract
A systematic mapping study assesses a broad selection of research publications with the aim of categorizing them according to a research question. We present the first systematic mapping study on evaluation practices within the field of real-time systems, by analyzing publications from the top three conferences ECRTS, RTAS, and RTSS from 2017 until 2024. Our study provides a comprehensive view on the evaluation practices prevalent in our community, including benchmark software, task set and graph generators, case studies, industrial challenges, and custom solutions. Based on our study, we construct and publish a dataset enabling quantitative analysis of evaluation practices within the real-time systems community. Our analysis indicates shortcomings in current practice: custom case studies are abundant, while industrial challenges have very minor impact. Reproducibility has only been shown for a small subset of evaluations and there is no indication of change. Adoption of new and improved tools and benchmarks is very slow or even non-existent. Evaluation must not be viewed as an obligation when publishing a paper, but as a key element in ensuring practicability, comparability, and reproducibility. Based on our study, we conclude that our community currently falls short on these objectives.

Published in: TGDK, Volume 1, Issue 1 (2023): Special Issue on Trends in Graph Data and Knowledge. Transactions on Graph Data and Knowledge, Volume 1, Issue 1

Abstract
The graph model is nowadays largely adopted to model a wide range of knowledge and data, spanning from social networks to knowledge graphs (KGs), representing a successful paradigm of how symbolic and transparent AI can scale on the World Wide Web. However, due to their unprecedented volume, they are generally tackled by Machine Learning (ML) and mostly numeric based methods such as graph embedding models (KGE) and deep neural networks (DNNs). The latter methods have been proved lately very efficient, leading the current AI spring. In this vision paper, we introduce some of the main existing methods for combining KGs and ML, divided into two categories: those using ML to improve KGs, and those using KGs to improve results on ML tasks. From this introduction, we highlight research gaps and perspectives that we deem promising and currently under-explored for the involved research communities, spanning from KG support for LLM prompting, integration of KG semantics in ML models to symbol-based methods, interpretability of ML models, and the need for improved benchmark datasets. In our opinion, such perspectives are stepping stones in an ultimate view of KGs as central assets for neuro-symbolic and explainable AI.

Energy-Efficient Multi-Core Scheduling for Real-Time DAG Tasks

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 76, 29th Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems (ECRTS 2017)

Abstract
In this work, we study energy-aware real-time scheduling of a set of sporadic Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) tasks with implicit deadlines. While meeting all real-time constraints, we try to identify the best task allocation and execution pattern such that the average power consumption of the whole platform is minimized. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that addresses the power consumption issue in scheduling multiple DAG tasks on multi-cores and allows intra-task processor sharing. We first adapt the decomposition-based framework for federated scheduling and propose an energy-sub-optimal scheduler. Then we derive an approximation algorithm to identify processors to be merged together for further improvements in energy-efficiency and to prove the bound of the approximation ratio. We perform a simulation study to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed scheduling. The simulation results show that our algorithms achieve an energy saving of 27% to 41% compared to existing DAG task schedulers.
