Understanding the Impact of Value Selection Heuristics in Scheduling Problems

Abstract
It has been observed that value selection heuristics have less impact than other heuristic choices when solving hard combinatorial optimization (CO) problems. It is often thought that this is because more time is spent on unsatisfiable sub-problems where the value ordering is irrelevant. In this paper we investigate this belief in the scheduling domain and come up with a more detailed explanation. We find that, even though there are less relevant choices to be made on hard instances, each mistake tends to have a bigger impact, to a point where the potential gain from a value heuristic predominates. Moreover, we observe two interesting and relatively surprising phenomena when solving scheduling problems. First, the accuracy of a given value selection heuristic decreases with the optimality gap. Second, the computational penalty of a mistake increases with the accuracy of the heuristic. For the first observation, we argue that on hard problems, constraint propagation removes a large portion of choices that align with the intuition behind the heuristic. This means that the heuristic faces mostly difficult choices. For the second observation, we argue that simple heuristics tend to make more mistakes on intuitive choice points, and the computational cost for refuting these mistakes is smaller than for those made by a more accurate heuristic.

Hardness and Approximation Algorithms for Balanced Districting Problems

Abstract
We introduce and study the problem of balanced districting, where given an undirected graph with vertices carrying two types of weights (different population, resource types, etc) the goal is to maximize the total weights covered in vertex disjoint districts such that each district is a star or (in general) a connected induced subgraph with the two weights to be balanced. This problem is strongly motivated by political redistricting, where contiguity, population balance, and compactness are essential. We provide hardness and approximation algorithms for this problem. In particular, we show NP-hardness for an approximation better than n^{1/2-δ} for any constant δ > 0 in general graphs even when the districts are star graphs, as well as NP-hardness on complete graphs, tree graphs, planar graphs and other restricted settings. On the other hand, we develop an algorithm for balanced star districting that gives an O(√n)-approximation on any graph (which is basically tight considering matching hardness of approximation results), an O(log n) approximation on planar graphs with extensions to minor-free graphs. Our algorithm uses a modified Whack-a-Mole algorithm [Bhattacharya, Kiss, and Saranurak, SODA 2023] to find a sparse solution of a fractional packing linear program (despite exponentially many variables) which requires a new design of a separation oracle specific for our balanced districting problem. To turn the fractional solution to a feasible integer solution, we adopt the randomized rounding algorithm by [Chan and Har-Peled, SoCG 2009]. To get a good approximation ratio of the rounding procedure, a crucial element in the analysis is the balanced scattering separators for planar graphs and minor-free graphs - separators that can be partitioned into a small number of k-hop independent sets for some constant k - which may find independent interest in solving other packing style problems. Further, our algorithm is versatile - the very same algorithm can be analyzed in different ways on various graph classes, which leads to class-dependent approximation ratios. We also provide a FPTAS algorithm for complete graphs and tree graphs, as well as greedy algorithms and approximation ratios when the district cardinality is bounded, the graph has bounded degree or the weights are binary. Rule Learning over Knowledge Graphs: A Review

Abstract
Compared to black-box neural networks, logic rules express explicit knowledge, can provide human-understandable explanations for reasoning processes, and have found their wide application in knowledge graphs and other downstream tasks. As extracting rules manually from large knowledge graphs is labour-intensive and often infeasible, automated rule learning has recently attracted significant interest, and a number of approaches to rule learning for knowledge graphs have been proposed. This survey aims to provide a review of approaches and a classification of state-of-the-art systems for learning first-order logic rules over knowledge graphs. A comparative analysis of various approaches to rule learning is conducted based on rule language biases, underlying methods, and evaluation metrics. The approaches we consider include inductive logic programming (ILP)-based, statistical path generalisation, and neuro-symbolic methods. Moreover, we highlight important and promising application scenarios of rule learning, such as rule-based knowledge graph completion, fact checking, and applications in other research areas.

Abstract
The graph model is nowadays largely adopted to model a wide range of knowledge and data, spanning from social networks to knowledge graphs (KGs), representing a successful paradigm of how symbolic and transparent AI can scale on the World Wide Web. However, due to their unprecedented volume, they are generally tackled by Machine Learning (ML) and mostly numeric based methods such as graph embedding models (KGE) and deep neural networks (DNNs). The latter methods have been proved lately very efficient, leading the current AI spring. In this vision paper, we introduce some of the main existing methods for combining KGs and ML, divided into two categories: those using ML to improve KGs, and those using KGs to improve results on ML tasks. From this introduction, we highlight research gaps and perspectives that we deem promising and currently under-explored for the involved research communities, spanning from KG support for LLM prompting, integration of KG semantics in ML models to symbol-based methods, interpretability of ML models, and the need for improved benchmark datasets. In our opinion, such perspectives are stepping stones in an ultimate view of KGs as central assets for neuro-symbolic and explainable AI.

Abstract
Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have emerged as fundamental platforms for powering intelligent decision-making and a wide range of Artificial Intelligence (AI) services across major corporations such as Google, Walmart, and AirBnb. KGs complement Machine Learning (ML) algorithms by providing data context and semantics, thereby enabling further inference and question-answering capabilities. The integration of KGs with neuronal learning (e.g., Large Language Models (LLMs)) is currently a topic of active research, commonly named neuro-symbolic AI. Despite the numerous benefits that can be accomplished with KG-based AI, its growing ubiquity within online services may result in the loss of self-determination for citizens as a fundamental societal issue. The more we rely on these technologies, which are often centralised, the less citizens will be able to determine their own destinies. To counter this threat, AI regulation, such as the European Union (EU) AI Act, is being proposed in certain regions. The regulation sets what technologists need to do, leading to questions concerning How the output of AI systems can be trusted? What is needed to ensure that the data fuelling and the inner workings of these artefacts are transparent? How can AI be made accountable for its decision-making? This paper conceptualises the foundational topics and research pillars to support KG-based AI for self-determination. Drawing upon this conceptual framework, challenges and opportunities for citizen self-determination are illustrated and analysed in a real-world scenario. As a result, we propose a research agenda aimed at accomplishing the recommended objectives.

Hodge Decomposition and General Laplacian Solvers for Embedded Simplicial Complexes

Abstract
We describe a nearly-linear time algorithm to solve the linear system L₁x = b parameterized by the first Betti number of the complex, where L₁ is the 1-Laplacian of a simplicial complex K that is a subcomplex of a collapsible complex X linearly embedded in ℝ³. Our algorithm generalizes the work of Black et al. [SODA2022] that solved the same problem but required that K have trivial first homology. Our algorithm works for complexes K with arbitrary first homology with running time that is nearly-linear with respect to the size of the complex and polynomial with respect to the first Betti number. The key to our solver is a new algorithm for computing the Hodge decomposition of 1-chains of K in nearly-linear time. Additionally, our algorithm implies a nearly quadratic solver and nearly quadratic Hodge decomposition for the 1-Laplacian of any simplicial complex K embedded in ℝ³, as K can always be expanded to a collapsible embedded complex of quadratic complexity.

ETH-Tight Algorithms for Finding Surfaces in Simplicial Complexes of Bounded Treewidth

Abstract
Given a simplicial complex with n simplices, we consider the Connected Subsurface Recognition (c-SR) problem of finding a subcomplex that is homeomorphic to a given connected surface with a fixed boundary. We also study the related Sum-of-Genus Subsurface Recognition (SoG) problem, where we instead search for a surface whose boundary, number of connected components, and total genus are given. For both of these problems, we give parameterized algorithms with respect to the treewidth k of the Hasse diagram that run in 2^{O(k log k)}n^{O(1)} time. For the SoG problem, we also prove that our algorithm is optimal assuming the exponential-time hypothesis. In fact, we prove the stronger result that our algorithm is ETH-tight even without restriction on the total genus.

Effective Resistance and Capacitance in Simplicial Complexes and a Quantum Algorithm

Abstract
We investigate generalizations of the graph theoretic notions of effective resistance and capacitance to simplicial complexes and prove analogs of formulas known in the case of graphs. In graphs the effective resistance between two vertices is O(n); however, we show that in a simplicial complex the effective resistance of a null-homologous cycle may be exponential. This is caused by relative torsion in the simplicial complex. We provide upper bounds on both effective resistance and capacitance that are polynomial in the number of simplices as well as the maximum cardinality of the torsion subgroup of a relative homology group denoted 𝒯_{max}(𝒦). We generalize the quantum algorithm deciding st-connectivity in a graph and obtain an algorithm deciding whether or not a (d-1)-dimensional cycle γ is null-homologous in a d-dimensional simplicial complex 𝒦. The quantum algorithm has query complexity parameterized by the effective resistance and capacitance of γ. Using our upper bounds we find that the query complexity is O (n^{5/2}⋅ d^{1/2} ⋅ 𝒯_{max}(𝒦)²). Under the assumptions that γ is the boundary of a d-simplex (which may or may not be included in the complex) and that 𝒦 is relative torsion-free, we match the O(n^{3/2}) query complexity obtained for st-connectivity. These assumptions always hold in the case of st-connectivity. We provide an implementation of the algorithm whose running time is polynomial in the size of the complex and the relative torsion. Finally, we prove a duality theorem relating effective resistance and capacitance when 𝒦 is d-dimensional and admits an embedding into ℝ^{d+1}.
