Improved Bounds on the Sum of Exponents of Runs in a String

Authors: Arkadiusz Czarkowski

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 369, 37th Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM 2026)

Abstract
A substring of a word is a run if it is at least twice as long as its minimum period and cannot be extended to either side with the same period. The exponent of a run is the quotient of its length and its minimum period. ρ(n) is the maximum number of runs in a string of length n, while σ(n) is the maximum sum of exponents of runs in a string of length n. While quite tight bounds on ρ(n) are known (0.944575712n ≤ ρ(n) ≤ n), the best upper bound on σ(n) is 3n whereas the best lower bound on σ(n) is 2.035n. In this paper, we improve the upper bound on σ(n) to 2.3n and the lower bound on σ(n) to 2.04448n. We also provide an improved upper bound on σ(n) of 2.2n in the case of a binary alphabet. Our results are achieved using a combination of theoretical and computer-based approaches.

On Occurrence-Preserving Morphisms

Authors: Kaisei Kishi, Peaker Guo, Cristian Urbina, and Hideo Bannai

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 369, 37th Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM 2026)

Abstract
A morphism is a mapping that transforms words through letter-wise substitution, where each symbol is consistently replaced by a fixed word. In the field of combinatorics on words, one topic that has attracted considerable attention is the characterization of morphisms that preserve specific properties, such as overlap-freeness, square-freeness, lexicographic order, and primitivity. Continuing this direction, we initiate the study on occurrence-preserving morphisms, which address the following fundamental question: given a morphism ϕ, two words u and v, and k ≥ 1, under what conditions does the number of occurrences of u in v equal the number of occurrences of ϕ^k(u) in ϕ^k(v)? To answer this question, we introduce the notion of interference-free morphisms, examine their properties, and uncover a connection to recognizable morphisms. We then present a precise characterization of occurrence-preserving morphisms in terms of interference-freeness. As applications of our characterization, we first show that there exists a bijection between the starting positions of the occurrences of u in v and those of ϕ^k(u) in ϕ^k(v). We then apply the characterization to the Fibonacci and Thue-Morse words to identify their minimal unique substrings (MUSs). Finally, we exploit the connection between MUSs and net occurrences to simplify existing proofs on net occurrences in these words.

Morphisms and BWT-Run Sensitivity

Authors: Gabriele Fici, Giuseppe Romana, Marinella Sciortino, and Cristian Urbina

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
We study how the application of morphisms affects the number r of equal-letter runs in the Burrows–Wheeler Transform (BWT). This parameter has emerged as a key repetitiveness measure in compressed indexing. We focus on the notion of BWT-run sensitivity after application of morphisms. For binary alphabets, we characterize the class of injective morphisms that preserve the number of BWT-runs up to a bounded additive increase by showing that it coincides with the known class of primitivity-preserving morphisms, which are those that map primitive words to primitive words. We further prove that deciding whether a given binary morphism has bounded BWT-run sensitivity is possible in polynomial time with respect to the total length of the images of the two letters. Additionally, we explore new structural and combinatorial properties of synchronizing and recognizable morphisms. These results establish new connections between BWT-based compressibility, code theory, and symbolic dynamics.

On Palindromic Periodicities

Authors: Gabriele Fici, Jeffrey Shallit, and Jamie Simpson

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 331, 36th Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM 2025)

Abstract
We say a finite word x is a palindromic periodicity if there exist two palindromes p and s such that |x| ≥ |ps| and x is a prefix of the infinite periodic word (ps)^ω = pspsps⋯. In this paper we examine the palindromic periodicities occurring in some classical infinite words, such as Sturmian words, episturmian words, the Thue-Morse word, the period-doubling word, the Rudin-Shapiro word, the paperfolding word, and the Tribonacci word, and prove a number of results about them. We also prove results about words with the smallest number of distinct palindromic periodicities.

Formalization of Basic Combinatorics on Words

Authors: Štěpán Holub and Štěpán Starosta

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 193, 12th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2021)

Abstract
Combinatorics on Words is a rather young domain encompassing the study of words and formal languages. An archetypal example of a task in Combinatorics on Words is to solve the equation x ⋅ y = y ⋅ x, i.e., to describe words that commute. This contribution contains formalization of three important classical results in Isabelle/HOL. Namely i) the Periodicity Lemma (a.k.a. the theorem of Fine and Wilf), including a construction of a word proving its optimality; ii) the solution of the equation x^a ⋅ y^b = z^c with 2 ≤ a,b,c, known as the Lyndon-Schützenberger Equation; and iii) the Graph Lemma, which yields a generic upper bound on the rank of a solution of a system of equations. The formalization of those results is based on an evolving toolkit of several hundred auxiliary results which provide for smooth reasoning within more complex tasks.

Periods and Borders of Random Words

Authors: Štepán Holub and Jeffrey Shallit

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 47, 33rd Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2016)

Abstract
We investigate the behavior of the periods and border lengths of random words over a fixed alphabet. We show that the asymptotic probability that a random word has a given maximal border length k is a constant, depending only on k and the alphabet size l. We give a recurrence that allows us to determine these constants with any required precision. This also allows us to evaluate the expected period of a random word. For the binary case, the expected period is asymptotically about n-1.641. We also give explicit formulas for the probability that a random word is unbordered or has maximum border length one.
