Line Cover and Related Problems

Abstract
We study several extensions of the classic Line Cover problem of covering a set of n points in the plane with k lines. Line Cover is known to be NP-hard and our focus is on two natural generalizations: (1) Line Clustering, where the objective is to find k lines in the plane that minimize the sum of squares of distances of a given set of input points to the closest line, and (2) Hyperplane Cover, where the goal is to cover n points in ℝ^d by k hyperplanes. We also consider the more general Projective Clustering problem, which unifies both of these and has numerous applications in machine learning, data mining, and computational geometry. In this problem one seeks k affine subspaces of dimension r minimizing the sum of squares of distances of a given set of n points in ℝ^d to the closest point within one of the k affine subspaces. Our main contributions reveal interesting differences in the parameterized complexity of these problems. While Line Cover is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by the number k of lines in the solution, we show that Line Clustering is W[1]-hard when parameterized by k and rule out algorithms of running time n^{o(k)} under the Exponential Time Hypothesis. Hyperplane Cover is known to be NP-hard even when d = 2 and by the work of Langerman and Morin [Discrete & Computational Geometry, 2005], it is FPT parameterized by k and d. We complement this result by establishing that Hyperplane Cover is W[2]-hard when parameterized by only k. We complement our hardness results by presenting an algorithm for Projective Clustering. We show that this problem is solvable in n^{𝒪(dk(r+1))} time. Not only does this yield an upper bound for Line Clustering that asymptotically matches our lower bound, but it also significantly extends the seminal work on k-Means Clustering (the special case r = 0) by Inaba, Katoh, and Imai [SoCG 1994].

Parameterized Complexity of Vehicle Routing

Abstract
The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is a popular generalization of the Traveling Salesperson Problem. Instead of one salesperson traversing the entire weighted, undirected graph G, there are k vehicles available to jointly cover the set of clients C ⊆ V(G). Every vehicle must start at one of the depot vertices D ⊆ V(G) and return to its start. Capacitated Vehicle Routing (CVRP) additionally restricts the route of each vehicle by limiting the number of clients it can cover, the distance it can travel, or both. In this work, we study the complexity of VRP and the three variants of CVRP for several parameterizations, in particular focusing on the treewidth of G. We present an FPT algorithm for VRP parameterized by treewidth. For CVRP, we prove paraNP- and W[⋅]-hardness for various parameterizations, including treewidth, thereby rendering the existence of FPT algorithms unlikely. In turn, we provide an XP algorithm for CVRP when parameterized by both treewidth and the vehicle capacity.

Parameterized Reunion with Achromatic Number

Abstract
In this paper, we study the Achromatic Number problem. Given a graph G and an integer k, the task is to determine whether there exists a proper coloring of G, using at least k colors, in which every pair of distinct colors appears on the endpoints of some edge. It was established early on that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT)- even before the formal development of parameterized complexity. In fact, Farber, Hahn, Hell, and Miller [JCTB, 1986] devised an algorithm with a running time of 𝒪(f(k) ⋅ |E(G)|). Although the exact form of f(k) was not specified, it appears to be at least doubly exponential in k. In our work, we first present an algorithm with an explicit dependence on k, and then introduce another algorithm that is parameterized by the vertex cover number of the graph. More formally, we show the following. - Achromatic Number is solvable in time 2^𝒪(k⁵)+𝒪(|E(G)|). - Achromatic Number admits a polynomial kernel when the input is restricted to a d-degenerate graph and a more efficient kernel on trees. - We also study the parameterized complexity of the problem with respect to Vertex Cover and show that it admits an FPT algorithm running in time 2^𝒪(𝓁²) ⋅ n^𝒪(1), where 𝓁 is the size of a vertex cover.

Streaming Algorithms for Conflict-Free Coloring

Abstract
Conflict-free coloring of a hypergraph ℋ = (V,ℰ) using k colors is a function f:V → {1,2, …, k} such that for all E ∈ ℰ, there exists a vertex v ∈ E with a unique color. That is, f(v)≠ f(u) for all u ∈ E ⧵ {v}. The minimum k for which ℋ has a conflict-free coloring using k colors is called the conflict-free chromatic number of ℋ. For a simple graph G, a conflict-free coloring of the hypergraph with vertex set V(G) and edge set being the set of all closed neighborhoods of the vertices in G is called a conflict-free closed neighborhood (CFCN) coloring of G. CFCN chromatic number, denoted by χ_{CN}(G), is the minimum number of colors used in a conflict-free closed neighborhood coloring of G. Analogously, we define conflict-free open neighborhood (CFON) coloring and CFON chromatic number, χ_{ON}(G), of a graph G. There are various works on proving upper and lower bounds of χ_{ON}(G) and χ_{CN}(G). In this work, we develop streaming algorithms for CFCN and CFON coloring of a graph where the number of colors used matches the best-known upper bounds of χ_{ON}(G) and χi_{CN}(G). Our algorithms use as input an edge stream of the graph G in the insertion-only model. Our results and the best-known bounds for χ_{ON}(G) and χ_{CN}(G) are given below. 1. Pach and Tardos [Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2009] showed that, for any n vertex graph G, χ_{CN}(G) = O(ln² n). Glebov, Szabó and Tardos [Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2014] showed the existence of graphs G with χ_{CN}(G) = Ω(ln² n). We design a randomized single-pass semi-streaming algorithm (i.e., it uses O(n ln n) space that, given an n-vertex graph G, outputs a CFCN coloring of G using O(ln² n) colors with probability at least (1-2/n). 2. Bhyravarapu, Kalyanasundaram, Mathew [Journal of Graph Theory, 2021] showed that for a graph G with maximum degree Δ, χ_{CN}(G) = O(ln² Δ). The methods used by our algorithms give rise to a simpler, alternate proof for this bound. 3. It is known that χ_{ON}(G) ≤ 1/2 + √{2n + 1/4} (See Pach and Tardos [Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2009] and Ph.D. thesis of Cheilaris). This bound is asymptotically tight. - We design a deterministic single-pass O(n√n) space streaming algorithm that, given a graph G on n vertices, finds a CFON coloring using 2√n colors. - We design a randomized, single-pass, semi-streaming algorithm to find a CFON coloring of a graph G using O(√n ln² n) colors with success probability at least (1-2/n). 4. It is known that χ_{ON}(G) ≤ Δ+1, where Δ is the maximum degree of a vertex in G. Further, there are graphs G known with χ_{ON}(G) = Δ + 1. We design a randomized two-pass semi-streaming algorithm (uses O(1/(ε²) n ln³ n) space) that outputs a CFON coloring of G using (1+ε)Δ colors, for any ε > 0, with a probability at least (1-1/n).

Quasipolynomial-Time Deterministic Kernelization and (Gammoid) Representation

Abstract
In this paper, we suggest to extend the notion of a kernel to permit the kernelization algorithm to be executed in quasi-polynomial time rather than polynomial time. So far, we are only aware of one work that addressed this negatively, showing that some lower bounds on kernel sizes proved for kernelization also hold when quasi-polynomial time complexity is allowed. When we, anyway, deal with an NP-hard problem, sacrificing polynomial time in preprocessing for quasi-polynomial time may often not be a big deal, but, of course, the question is - does it give us more power? The only known work, mentioned above, seems to suggest that the answer is "no". In this paper, we show that this is not the case - in particular, we show that this notion is extremely powerful for derandomization. Some of the most basic kernelization algorithms in the field are based on inherently randomized tools whose derandomization is a huge problem that has remained (and may still remain) open for many decades. Still, some breakthrough advances for derandomization in quasi-polynomial time have been made. Can we harness these advancements to design quasi-polynomial deterministic kernelization algorithms for basic problems in the field? To this end, we revisit the question of deterministic polynomial-time computation of a linear representation of transversal matroids and gammoids, which is a longstanding open problem. We present a deterministic computation of a representation matrix of a transversal matroid in time quasipolynomial in the rank of the matroid, where each entry of the matrix can be represented in quasipolynomial (in the rank of the matroid) bits. As a corollary, we obtain a linear representation of a gammoid in deterministic quasipolynomial time and quasipolynomial bits in the size of the underlying ground set of the gammoid. In turn, as applications of our results, we present deterministic quasi-polynomial time kernels of polynomial size for several central problems in the field.

Robust Contraction Decomposition for Minor-Free Graphs and Its Applications

Abstract
We prove a robust contraction decomposition theorem for H-minor-free graphs, which states that given an H-minor-free graph G and an integer p, one can partition in polynomial time the vertices of G into p sets Z₁,… ,Z_p such that tw(G/(Z_i ⧵ Z')) = O(p + |Z'|) for all i ∈ [p] and Z' ⊆ Z_i. Here, tw(⋅) denotes the treewidth of a graph and G/(Z_i ⧵ Z') denotes the graph obtained from G by contracting all edges with both endpoints in Z_i ⧵ Z'. Our result generalizes earlier results by Klein [SICOMP 2008] and Demaine et al. [STOC 2011] based on partitioning E(G), and some recent theorems for planar graphs by Marx et al. [SODA 2022], for bounded-genus graphs (more generally, almost-embeddable graphs) by Bandyapadhyay et al. [SODA 2022], and for unit-disk graphs by Bandyapadhyay et al. [SoCG 2022]. The robust contraction decomposition theorem directly results in parameterized algorithms with running time 2^{Õ(√k)} ⋅ n^{O(1)} or n^{O(√k)} for every vertex/edge deletion problems on H-minor-free graphs that can be formulated as Permutation CSP Deletion or 2-Conn Permutation CSP Deletion. Consequently, we obtain the first subexponential-time parameterized algorithms for Subset Feedback Vertex Set, Subset Odd Cycle Transversal, Subset Group Feedback Vertex Set, 2-Conn Component Order Connectivity on H-minor-free graphs. For other problems which already have subexponential-time parameterized algorithms on H-minor-free graphs (e.g., Odd Cycle Transversal, Vertex Multiway Cut, Vertex Multicut, etc.), our theorem gives much simpler algorithms of the same running time.

Strongly Sublinear Separators and Bounded Asymptotic Dimension for Sphere Intersection Graphs

Abstract
In this paper, we consider the class 𝒞^d of sphere intersection graphs in R^d for d ≥ 2. We show that for each integer t, the class of all graphs in 𝒞^d that exclude K_{t,t} as a subgraph has strongly sublinear separators. We also prove that 𝒞^d has asymptotic dimension at most 2d+2.

Dominating Set, Independent Set, Discrete k-Center, Dispersion, and Related Problems for Planar Points in Convex Position

Abstract
Given a set P of n points in the plane, its unit-disk graph G(P) is a graph with P as its vertex set such that two points of P are connected by an edge if their (Euclidean) distance is at most 1. We consider several classical problems on G(P) in a special setting when points of P are in convex position. These problems are all NP-hard in the general case. We present efficient algorithms for these problems under the convex position assumption. ● For the problem of finding the smallest dominating set of G(P), we present an O(knlog n) time algorithm, where k is the smallest dominating set size. We also consider the weighted case in which each point of P has a weight and the goal is to find a dominating set in G(P) with minimum total weight; our algorithm runs in O(n³log² n) time. In particular, for a given k, our algorithm can compute in O(kn²log² n) time a minimum weight dominating set of size at most k (if it exists). ● For the discrete k-center problem, which is to find a subset of k points in P (called centers) for a given k, such that the maximum distance between any point in P and its nearest center is minimized. We present an algorithm that solves the problem in O(min{n^{4/3}log n+knlog² n,k² nlog²n}) time, which is O(n²log² n) in the worst case when k = Θ(n). For comparison, the runtime of the current best algorithm for the continuous version of the problem where centers can be anywhere in the plane is O(n³ log n). ● For the problem of finding a maximum independent set in G(P), we give an algorithm of O(n^{7/2}) time and another randomized algorithm of O(n^{37/11}) expected time, which improve the previous best result of O(n⁶log n) time. Our algorithms can be extended to compute a maximum-weight independent set in G(P) with the same time complexities when points of P have weights. - If we are looking for an (unweighted) independent set of size 3, we derive an algorithm of O(nlog n) time; the previous best algorithm runs in O(n^{4/3}log² n) time (which works for the general case where points of P are not necessarily in convex position). - If points of P have weights and are not necessarily in convex position, we present an algorithm that can find a maximum-weight independent set of size 3 in O(n^{5/3+δ}) time for an arbitrarily small constant δ > 0. By slightly modifying the algorithm, a maximum-weight clique of size 3 can also be found within the same time complexity. ● For the dispersion problem, which is to find a subset of k points from P for a given k, such that the minimum pairwise distance of the points in the subset is maximized. We present an algorithm of O(n^{7/2}log n) time and another randomized algorithm of O(n^{37/11}log n) expected time, which improve the previous best result of O(n⁶) time. - If k = 3, we present an algorithm of O(nlog² n) time and another randomized algorithm of O(nlog n) expected time; the previous best algorithm runs in O(n^{4/3}log² n) time (which works for the general case where points of P are not necessarily in convex position).

Knapsack with Vertex Cover, Set Cover, and Hitting Set

Abstract
In the Vertex Cover Knapsack problem, we are given an undirected graph G = (V, E), with weights (w(u))_{u ∈ V} and values (𝛂(u))_{u ∈ V} of the vertices, the size s of the knapsack, a target value p, and the goal is to compute if there exists a vertex cover U ⊆ V with total weight at most s, and total value at least p. This problem simultaneously generalizes the classical vertex cover and knapsack problems. We show that this problem is strongly NP-complete. However, it admits a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm for trees. In fact, we show that there is an algorithm that runs in time O (2^tw ⋅ n ⋅ min) where tw is the treewidth of G. Moreover, we can compute a (1-ε)- approximate solution for maximizing the value of the solution given the knapsack size as input in time O (2^tw ⋅ poly(n,1/ε,log(∑_{v ∈ V} 𝛂(v)))) and a (1+ε)-approximate solution to minimize the size of the solution given a target value as input, in time O (2^tw ⋅ poly(n,1/ε,log(∑_{v ∈ V} w(v)))) for every ε > 0. Restricting our attention to polynomial-time algorithms only, we then consider polynomial-time algorithms and present a 2 factor polynomial-time approximation algorithm for this problem for minimizing the total weight of the solution, which is optimal up to additive o(1) assuming Unique Games Conjecture (UGC). On the other hand, we show that there is no ρ factor polynomial-time approximation algorithm for maximizing the total value of the solution given a knapsack size for any ρ > 1 unless 𝖯 = NP. Furthermore, we show similar results for the variants of the above problem when the solution U needs to be a minimal vertex cover, minimum vertex cover, and vertex cover of size at most k for some input integer k. Then, we consider set families (equivalently hypergraphs) and study the variants of the above problem when the solution needs to be a set cover and hitting set. We show that there are H_d and f factor polynomial-time approximation algorithms for Set Cover Knapsack where d is the maximum cardinality of any set and f is the maximum number of sets in the family where any element can belongs in the input for minimizing the weight of the knapsack given a target value, and a d factor polynomial-time approximation algorithm for d-Hitting Set Knapsack which are optimal up to additive o(1) assuming UGC. On the other hand, we show that there is no ρ factor polynomial-time approximation algorithm for maximizing the total value of the solution given a knapsack size for any ρ > 1 unless 𝖯 = NP for both Set Cover Knapsack and d-Hitting Set Knapsack.

Efficient Algorithms for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree on Near-Convex Terminal Sets

Abstract
The Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree problem takes as input a set P of points in the Euclidean plane and finds the minimum length network interconnecting all the points of P. In this paper, in continuation to the works of [Du et al., 1987] and [Weng and Booth, 1995], we study Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree when P is formed by the vertices of a pair of regular, concentric and parallel n-gons. We restrict our attention to the cases where the two polygons are not very close to each other. In such cases, we show that Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree is polynomial-time solvable, and we describe an explicit structure of a Euclidean Steiner minimal tree for P. We also consider point sets P of size n where the number of input points not on the convex hull of P is f(n) ≤ n. We give an exact algorithm with running time 2^𝒪(f(n) log n) for such input point sets P. Note that when f(n) = 𝒪(n/(log n)), our algorithm runs in single-exponential time, and when f(n) = o(n) the running time is 2^o(n log n) which is better than the known algorithm in [Hwang et al., 1992]. We know that no FPTAS exists for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree unless P = NP [Garey et al., 1977]. On the other hand FPTASes exist for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree on convex point sets [Scott Provan, 1988]. In this paper, we show that if the number of input points in P not belonging to the convex hull of P is 𝒪(log n), then an FPTAS exists for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree. In contrast, we show that for any ε ∈ (0,1], when there are Ω(n^ε) points not belonging to the convex hull of the input set, then no FPTAS can exist for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree unless P = NP.

Disjointness Through the Lens of Vapnik–Chervonenkis Dimension: Sparsity and Beyond

Abstract
The disjointness problem - where Alice and Bob are given two subsets of {1, … , n} and they have to check if their sets intersect - is a central problem in the world of communication complexity. While both deterministic and randomized communication complexities for this problem are known to be Θ(n), it is also known that if the sets are assumed to be drawn from some restricted set systems then the communication complexity can be much lower. In this work, we explore how communication complexity measures change with respect to the complexity of the underlying set system. The complexity measure for the set system that we use in this work is the Vapnik–Chervonenkis (VC) dimension. More precisely, on any set system with VC dimension bounded by d, we analyze how large can the deterministic and randomized communication complexities be, as a function of d and n. The d-sparse set disjointness problem, where the sets have size at most d, is one such set system with VC dimension d. The deterministic and the randomized communication complexities of the d-sparse set disjointness problem have been well studied and is known to be Θ (d log ({n}/{d})) and Θ(d), respectively, in the multi-round communication setting. In this paper, we address the question of whether the randomized communication complexity is always upper bounded by a function of the VC dimension of the set system, and does there always exist a gap between the deterministic and randomized communication complexity for set systems with small VC dimension. In this paper, we construct two natural set systems of VC dimension d, motivated from geometry. Using these set systems we show that the deterministic and randomized communication complexity can be Θ̃(dlog (n/d)) for set systems of VC dimension d and this matches the deterministic upper bound for all set systems of VC dimension d. We also study the deterministic and randomized communication complexities of the set intersection problem when sets belong to a set system of bounded VC dimension. We show that there exists set systems of VC dimension d such that both deterministic and randomized (one-way and multi-round) complexities for the set intersection problem can be as high as Θ(dlog (n/d)), and this is tight among all set systems of VC dimension d.

Parameter Analysis for Guarding Terrains

Abstract
The Terrain Guarding problem is a well-known variant of the famous Art Gallery problem. Only second to Art Gallery, it is the most well-studied visibility problem in Discrete and Computational Geometry, which has also attracted attention from the viewpoint of Parameterized complexity. In this paper, we focus on the parameterized complexity of Terrain Guarding (both discrete and continuous) with respect to two natural parameters. First we show that, when parameterized by the number r of reflex vertices in the input terrain, the problem has a polynomial kernel. We also show that, when parameterized by the number c of minima in the terrain, Discrete Orthogonal Terrain Guarding has an XP algorithm.

Parameterized Study of Steiner Tree on Unit Disk Graphs

Abstract
We study the Steiner Tree problem on unit disk graphs. Given a n vertex unit disk graph G, a subset R⊆ V(G) of t vertices and a positive integer k, the objective is to decide if there exists a tree T in G that spans over all vertices of R and uses at most k vertices from V⧵ R. The vertices of R are referred to as terminals and the vertices of V(G)⧵ R as Steiner vertices. First, we show that the problem is NP-hard. Next, we prove that the Steiner Tree problem on unit disk graphs can be solved in n^{O(√{t+k})} time. We also show that the Steiner Tree problem on unit disk graphs parameterized by k has an FPT algorithm with running time 2^{O(k)}n^{O(1)}. In fact, the algorithms are designed for a more general class of graphs, called clique-grid graphs [Fomin et al., 2019]. We mention that the algorithmic results can be made to work for Steiner Tree on disk graphs with bounded aspect ratio. Finally, we prove that Steiner Tree on disk graphs parameterized by k is W[1]-hard.

Parameterized Complexity Classification of Deletion to List Matrix-Partition for Low-Order Matrices

Abstract
Given a symmetric l x l matrix M=(m_{i,j}) with entries in {0,1,*}, a graph G and a function L : V(G) - > 2^{[l]} (where [l] = {1,2,...,l}), a list M-partition of G with respect to L is a partition of V(G) into l parts, say, V_1, V_2, ..., V_l such that for each i,j in {1,2,...,l}, (i) if m_{i,j}=0 then for any u in V_i and v in V_j, uv not in E(G), (ii) if m_{i,j}=1 then for any (distinct) u in V_i and v in V_j, uv in E(G), (iii) for each v in V(G), if v in V_i then i in L(v). We consider the Deletion to List M-Partition problem that takes as input a graph G, a list function L:V(G) - > 2^[l] and a positive integer k. The aim is to determine whether there is a k-sized set S subseteq V(G) such that G-S has a list M-partition. Many important problems like Vertex Cover, Odd Cycle Transversal, Split Vertex Deletion, Multiway Cut and Deletion to List Homomorphism are special cases of the Deletion to List M-Partition problem. In this paper, we provide a classification of the parameterized complexity of Deletion to List M-Partition, parameterized by k, (a) when M is of order at most 3, and (b) when M is of order 4 with all diagonal entries belonging to {0,1}.

Parameterized Query Complexity of Hitting Set Using Stability of Sunflowers

Abstract
In this paper, we study the query complexity of parameterized decision and optimization versions of Hitting-Set. We also investigate the query complexity of Packing. In doing so, we use generalizations to hypergraphs of an earlier query model, known as BIS introduced by Beame et al. in ITCS'18. The query models considered are the GPIS and GPISE oracles. The GPIS and GPISE oracles are used for the decision and optimization versions of the problems, respectively. We use color coding and queries to the oracles to generate subsamples from the hypergraph, that retain some structural properties of the original hypergraph. We use the stability of the sunflowers in a non-trivial way to do so.
