Indexing Graphs for Shortest Beer Path Queries

Abstract
A beer graph is an edge-weighted graph G = (V,E,ω) with beer vertices B ⊆ V. A beer path between two vertices s and t of a beer graph is a path that connects s and t and visits at least one vertex in B. The beer distance between two vertices is the weight of a shortest beer path, i.e. a beer path having minimum total weight. A graph indexing scheme is a two-phase method that constructs an index data structure by a one-time preprocessing of an input graph and then exploits it to compute (or accelerate the computation of) answers to queries on structures of the graph dataset. In the last decade, such indexing schemes have been designed to perform, effectively, many relevant types of queries, e.g. on reachability, and have gained significant popularity in essentially all data-intensive application domains where large number of queries have to be routinely answered (e.g. journey planners), since they have been shown, through many experimental studies, to offer extremely low query times at the price of limited preprocessing time and space overheads. In this paper, we showcase that an indexing scheme, to efficiently execute queries on beer distances or shortest beer paths for pairs of vertices of a beer graph, can be obtained by adapting the highway labeling, a recently introduced indexing method to accelerate the computation of classical shortest paths. We design a preprocessing algorithm to build a whl index, i.e. a weighted highway labeling of a beer graph, and show how it can be queried to compute beer distances and shortest beer paths. Through extensive experimentation on real networks, we empirically demonstrate its practical effectiveness and superiority, in terms of offered trade-off between preprocessing time, space overhead and query time, with respect to the state-of-the-art.

Constraint Modelling with LLMs Using In-Context Learning

Abstract
Constraint Programming (CP) allows for the modelling and solving of a wide range of combinatorial problems. However, modelling such problems using constraints over decision variables still requires significant expertise, both in conceptual thinking and syntactic use of modelling languages. In this work, we explore the potential of using pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) as coding assistants, to transform textual problem descriptions into concrete and executable CP specifications. We present different transformation pipelines with explicit intermediate representations, and we investigate the potential benefit of various retrieval-augmented example selection strategies for in-context learning. We evaluate our approach on 2 datasets from the literature, namely NL4Opt (optimisation) and Logic Grid Puzzles (satisfaction), and a heterogeneous set of exercises from a CP course. The results show that pre-trained LLMs have promising potential for initialising the modelling process, with retrieval-augmented in-context learning significantly enhancing their modelling capabilities.

Shared Resource Contention in MCUs: A Reality Check and the Quest for Timeliness

Abstract
Microcontrollers (MCUs) are steadily embracing multi-core technology to meet growing performance demands. This trend marks a shift from their traditionally simple, deterministic designs to more complex and inherently less predictable architectures. While shared resource contention is well-studied in mid to high-end embedded systems, the emergence of multi-core architectures in MCUs introduces unique challenges and characteristics that existing research has not fully explored. In this paper, we conduct an in-depth investigation of both mainstream and next-generation MCU-based platforms, aiming to identify the sources of contention on systems typically lacking these problems. We empirically demonstrate substantial contention effects across different MCU architectures (i.e., from single- to multi-core configurations), highlighting significant application slowdowns. Notably, we observe that slowdowns can reach several orders of magnitude, with the most extreme cases showing up to a 3800x (times, not percent) increase in execution time. To address these issues, we propose and evaluate muTPArtc, a novel mechanism designed for Timely Progress Assessment (TPA) and TPA-based runtime control specifically tailored to MCUs. muTPArtc is an MCU-specialized TPA-based mechanism that leverages hardware facilities widely available in commercial off-the-shelf MCUs (i.e., hardware breakpoints and cycle counters) to successfully monitor applications' progress, detect, and mitigate timing violations. Our results demonstrate that muTPArtc effectively manages performance degradation due to interference, requiring only minimal modifications to the build pipeline and no changes to the source code of the target application, while incurring minor overheads.

Early requirements engineering for e-customs decision support: Assessing overlap in mental models

Abstract
Developing decision support systems is a complex process. It involves stakeholders with diverging interpretations of the task and domain. In this paper, we propose to use ontology mapping to make a detailed analysis of the overlaps and differences between mental models of stakeholders. The technique is applied to an extensive case study about EU customs regulations. Companies which can demonstrate to be ‘in control’ of the safety and security in the supply chain, may become ‘Authorized Economic Operator’ (AEO), and avoid inspections by customs. We focus on a decision support tool, AEO Digiscan, developed to assist companies with an AEO self-assessment. We compared the mental models of customs officials, with mental models of the developers of the tool. The results highlight important differences in the interpretation of the new regulations, which will lead to adaptations of the tool.

Control Patterns in a Health Care Network

Abstract
In this paper we present control patterns for the analysis and design of administrative control mechanisms in a network organization. A control pattern is a description of a generic and reusable control mechanism that solves a specific control problem, to be selected on the basis of the context. To represent the context and solution, we analyze a network organization as a set of actors who transfer objects of economic value. The usefulness and adequacy of the control patterns is demonstrated by a case study of the governance and control mechanisms of the Dutch public health insurance network for exceptional medical expenses (AWBZ).
