Generalized Decidability via Brouwer Trees

Abstract
In the setting of constructive mathematics, we suggest and study a framework for decidability of properties, which allows for finer distinctions than just "decidable, semidecidable, or undecidable". We work in homotopy type theory and use Brouwer tree ordinals to specify the level of decidability of a property. In this framework, we express the property that a proposition is α-decidable, for an ordinal α, and show that it generalizes decidability and semidecidability. Further generalizing known results, we show that α-decidable propositions are closed under binary conjunction, and discuss for which α they are closed under binary disjunction. We prove that if each P(i) is semidecidable, then the countable meet ∀ i ∈ ℕ. P(i) is ω²-decidable, and similar results for countable joins and iterated quantifiers. We also discuss the relationship with countable choice. All our results are formalized in Cubical Agda.

Interpreting Lambda Calculus in Domain-Valued Random Variables

Authors: Robert Furber, Radu Mardare, Prakash Panangaden, and Dana Scott

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
We develop Boolean-valued domain theory and show how the lambda-calculus can be interpreted using domain-valued random variables. We focus on the reflexive domain construction rather than the language and its semantics. We develop the Boolean-valued set theory needed from scratch and then develop Boolean-valued domain theory on top of that. The notions of equality and partial order have to be given Boolean-valued interpretations; when we say that an equation is valid in the model we mean that its interpretation is the top element of the Boolean algebra.

ε-Distance via Lévy-Prokhorov Lifting

Authors: Josée Desharnais and Ana Sokolova

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
The most studied and accepted pseudometric for probabilistic processes is one based on the Kantorovich distance between distributions. It comes with many theoretical and motivating results, in particular it is the fixpoint of a given functional and defines a functor on (complete) pseudometric spaces. It is also the foundation for a categorical lifting of pseudometrics. Other notions of behavioural pseudometrics have also been proposed, one of them (ε-distance) based on ε-bisimulation. ε-Distance has the advantages that it is intuitively easy to understand, it relates systems that are conceptually close (for example, an imperfect implementation is close to its specification), and it comes equipped with a natural notion of ε-coupling. Finally, this distance is easy to compute. We show that ε-distance is also the greatest fixpoint of a functional and provides a functor. The latter is obtained by replacing the Kantorovich distance in the lifting functor with the Lévy-Prokhorov distance. In addition, we show that ε-couplings and ε-bisimulations have an appealing coalgebraic characterization.

Rational Lawvere Logic (Invited Paper)

Authors: Giorgio Bacci, Radu Mardare, Prakash Panangaden, and Gordon Plotkin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
We study Rational Lawvere logic (RL). This logic is defined over the extended positive reals with an algebraic structure combining the Lawvere quantale (with the reversed order on the extended reals and a sum as tensor) and a multiplicative quantale (with the usual order on the extended reals and a multiplication as tensor); together they provide a semiring structure. The logic is designed for complex quantitative reasoning, including sequents expressing inequalities between rational functions over the extended positive reals. We give a deduction system and demonstrate its expressiveness by deriving a classical result from probability theory relating the Kantorovich and total variation distances. Our deductive system is complete for finitely axiomatizable theories. The proof of completeness relies on the Krivine-Stengle Positivstellensatz. We additionally provide complexity results for both RL and its affine fragment AL. We consider two decision problems: the satisfiability of a set of sequents and whether a sequent follows from a finite set of sequent. We show that both problems lie in PSPACE for RL, and we give sharper complexity bounds for AL: the first problem is NP-complete, while the second is co-NP-complete.

Quantum Circuit Verification - A Potential Roadmap (Invited Talk)

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 360, 45th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2025)

Abstract
Quantum technologies are progressing at an extraordinary pace and are poised to transform numerous sectors both nationally and globally. Among them, quantum computing stands out for its potential to revolutionize areas such as cryptography, optimization, and the simulation of quantum systems, offering dramatic speed-ups for specific classes of problems. As quantum devices evolve and become increasingly pervasive, guaranteeing their correctness is of paramount importance. This necessitates the development of rigorous methods and tools to analyze and verify their behavior. However, the construction of such verification frameworks presents fundamental challenges. Quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement give rise to computational behaviors that differ profoundly from those of classical systems, leading to inherently probabilistic models and exponentially large state spaces, even for relatively small programs. Addressing these challenges requires building on the extensive expertise of the formal methods community in classical program verification, while incorporating recent advances and collaborative efforts in quantum systems. An interesting challenge for the verification community is to design and implement novel verification frameworks that transfer the key strengths of classical verification, such as expressive specification, precise error detection, automation, and scalability, to the quantum domain. We expect that the results of this research will play a crucial role in enabling the dependable deployment of quantum technologies across a wide range of future applications.

Explainability is a Game for Probabilistic Bisimilarity Distances

Authors: Emily Vlasman, Anto Nanah Ji, James Worrell, and Franck van Breugel

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
We revisit a game from the literature that characterizes the probabilistic bisimilarity distances of a labelled Markov chain. We illustrate how an optimal policy of the game can explain these distances. Like the games that characterize bisimilarity and probabilistic bisimilarity, the game is played on pairs of states and matches transitions of those states. To obtain more convincing and interpretable explanations than those provided by generic optimal policies, we restrict to optimal policies that delay reaching observably inequivalent state pairs for as long as possible (called 1-maximal) while quickly reaching equivalent ones (called 0-minimal). We present iterative algorithms that compute 1-maximal and 0-minimal policies and prove an exponential lower bound for the number of iterations of the algorithm that computes 1-maximal policies.

Active Learning of Upward-Closed Sets of Words ((Co)algebraic pearl)

Authors: Quentin Aristote

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 342, 11th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2025)

Abstract
We give a new proof of a result from well quasi-order theory on the computability of bases for upwards-closed sets of words. This new proof is based on Angluin’s L* algorithm, that learns an automaton from a minimally adequate teacher. This relates in particular two results from the 1980s: Angluin’s L* algorithm, and a result from Valk and Jantzen on the computability of bases for upwards-closed sets of tuples of integers. Along the way, we describe an algorithm for learning quasi-ordered automata from a minimally adequate teacher, and extend a generalization of Valk and Jantzen’s result, encompassing both words and integers, to finitely generated monoids.

Expressivity of Bisimulation Pseudometrics over Analytic State Spaces

Authors: Daniel Luckhardt, Harsh Beohar, and Clemens Kupke

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 342, 11th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2025)

Abstract
A Markov decision process (MDP) is a state-based dynamical system capable of describing probabilistic behaviour with rewards. In this paper, we view MDPs as coalgebras living in the category of analytic spaces, a very general class of measurable spaces. Note that analytic spaces were already studied in the literature on labelled Markov processes and bisimulation relations. Our results are twofold. First, we define bisimulation pseudometrics over such coalgebras using the framework of fibrations. Second, we develop a quantitative modal logic for such coalgebras and prove a quantitative form of Hennessy-Milner theorem in this new setting stating that the bisimulation pseudometric corresponds to the logical distance induced by modal formulae.

Cancellative Convex Semilattices

Authors: Ana Sokolova and Harald Woracek

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 342, 11th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2025)

Abstract
Convex semilattices are algebras that are at the same time a convex algebra and a semilattice, together with a distributivity axiom. These algebras have attracted some attention in the last years as suitable algebras for probability and nondeterminism, in particular by being the Eilenberg-Moore algebras of the nonempty finitely-generated convex subsets of the distributions monad. A convex semilattice is cancellative if the underlying convex algebra is cancellative. Cancellative convex algebras have been characterized by M. H. Stone and by H. Kneser: A convex algebra is cancellative if and only if it is isomorphic to a convex subset of a vector space (with canonical convex algebra operations). We prove an analogous theorem for convex semilattices: A convex semilattice is cancellative if and only if it is isomorphic to a convex subset of a Riesz space, i.e., a lattice-ordered vector space (with canonical convex semilattice operations).

Effectful Mealy Machines: Coalgebraic and Causal Traces (Invited Talk)

Authors: Filippo Bonchi, Elena Di Lavore, and Mario Román

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 342, 11th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2025)

Abstract
We introduce effectful Mealy machines - a general notion of Mealy machine with global effects - and give them semantics in terms of both bisimilarity and traces. Bisimilarity of effectful Mealy machines is characterized syntactically, via free uniform feedback. Their traces are given a novel semantic coinductive universe in terms of effectful streams. We prove that this framework generalizes standard causal processes and captures existing flavours of Mealy machine, bisimilarity, and trace. This is an extended abstract for the manuscript Effectful Mealy Machines: Bisimulation and Trace that will appear in the proceedings of LiCS 2025 [Bonchi et al., 2025]; an extended version with proofs is also available (arxiv.org/abs/2410.10627) [Bonchi et al., 2025]. We additionally characterise causal processes as lax-natural transformations.

Terminal Coalgebras for Finitary Functors

Authors: Jiří Adámek, Stefan Milius, and Lawrence S. Moss

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 342, 11th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2025)

Abstract
We present a result that implies that an endofunctor on a category has a terminal coalgebra obtainable as a countable limit of its terminal-coalgebra sequence. It holds for finitary endofunctors preserving nonempty binary intersections on locally finitely presentable categories, assuming that the posets of strong quotients and subobjects of every finitely presentable object satisfy the descending chain condition. This allows one to adapt finiteness arguments that were originally advanced by Worrell concerning terminal coalgebras for finitary set functors. Examples include the categories of sets, posets, vector spaces, graphs, and nominal sets. A similar argument is presented for the category of metric spaces (although it is not locally finitely presentable).

On the Metric Nature of (Differential) Logical Relations

Authors: Ugo Dal Lago, Naohiko Hoshino, and Paolo Pistone

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
Differential logical relations are a method to measure distances between higher-order programs. They differ from standard methods based on program metrics in that differences between functional programs are themselves functions, relating errors in input with errors in output, this way providing a more fine grained, contextual, information. The aim of this paper is to clarify the metric nature of differential logical relations. While previous work has shown that these do not give rise, in general, to (quasi-)metric spaces nor to partial metric spaces, we show that the distance functions arising from such relations, that we call quasi-quasi-metrics, can be related to both quasi-metrics and partial metrics, the latter being also captured by suitable relational definitions. Moreover, we exploit such connections to deduce some new compositional reasoning principles for program differences.

Bayesian Inference in Quantum Programs

Authors: Christina Gehnen, Dominique Unruh, and Joost-Pieter Katoen

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Conditioning is a key feature in probabilistic programming to enable modeling the influence of data (also known as observations) to the probability distribution described by such programs. Determining the posterior distribution is also known as Bayesian inference. This paper equips a quantum while-language with conditioning, defines its denotational and operational semantics over infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, and shows their equivalence. We provide sufficient conditions for the existence of weakest (liberal) precondition-transformers and derive inductive characterizations of these transformers. It is shown how w(l)p-transformers can be used to assess the effect of Bayesian inference on (possibly diverging) quantum programs.

Behavioural Metrics and Quantitative Logics (Dagstuhl Seminar 24432)

Authors: Barbara König, Radu Mardare, Prakash Panangaden, Jurriaan Rot, and Florence Clerc

Published in: Dagstuhl Reports, Volume 14, Issue 10 (2025)

Abstract
This report documents the program and the outcome of Dagstuhl Seminar "Behavioural Metrics and Quantitative Logics" (24432). Behavioural metrics and quantitative logics specify quantitative aspects of systems. A metric measures how far apart two systems are in their behaviour while a quantititative logic evaluates the degree to which a state satisfies a formula. They are often intimately connected via a Hennessy-Milner theorem stating that the distance induced by a quantitative logic coincides with behavioural distance. There are various applications in model-checking, differential privacy, hybrid systems and learning. Several challenges in this area have been identified: studying suitable metrics and their corresponding logics, generalizing to the setting of coalgebras by parameterizing the branching type of the system under consideration, developing methods of quantitative algebraic reasoning, finding efficient methods for computing behavioural methods. This Dagstuhl Seminar provided a forum to researchers working in this area, to discuss the state-of-the-art and further developments, and in particular address applications in various domains.
