Simplicial Approximation to CW Complexes with Spherical Delaunay Triangulations

Authors: Raphaël Tinarrage

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
Simplicial approximation provides a framework for constructing simplicial complexes that are homotopy equivalent to a given manifold, provided a CW structure is explicitly known. However, its conventional implementation quickly becomes intractable on a computer: barycentric subdivision produces poorly shaped simplices, and the star condition introduces many vertices. To address these limitations, this article develops a subdivision scheme based on spherical Delaunay triangulations, which attains better refinement properties than barycentric subdivisions. Moreover, the star condition is reframed as two independent problems, one geometric and the other combinatorial, respectively tackled in the language of locally equiconnected spaces and the list homomorphism problem, allowing an exponential reduction in the number of vertices. Via a prototype implementation, we obtain simplicial complexes homotopy equivalent to Grassmannians and Stiefel manifolds up to dimension 5.

Symbolic Conflict Analysis in Pseudo-Boolean Optimization

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 341, 28th International Conference on Theory and Applications of Satisfiability Testing (SAT 2025)

Abstract
In the the last two decades, a lot of effort has been devoted to the development of satisfiability-checking tools for a variety of SAT-related problems. However, most of these tools lack optimization capabilities. That is, instead of finding any solution, one is sometimes interested in a solution that is best according to some criterion. Pseudo-Boolean solvers can be used to deal with optimization by successively solving a series of problems that contain an additional pseudo-Boolean constraint expressing that a better solution is required. A key point for the success of this simple approach is that lemmas that are learned for one problem can be reused for subsequent ones. In this paper we go one step further and show how, by using a simple symbolic conflict analysis procedure, not only can lemmas be reused between problems but also strengthened, thus further pruning the search space traversal. In addition, we show how this technique automatically allows one to infer upper bounds in maximization problems, thus giving an estimation of how far the solver is from finding an optimal solution. Experimental results with our PB solver reveal that (i) this technique is indeed effective in practice, providing important speedups in problems where several solutions are found and (ii) on problems with very few solutions, where the impact of our technique is limited, its overhead is negligible.

On Cascades of Reset Automata

Authors: Roberto Borelli, Luca Geatti, Marco Montali, and Angelo Montanari

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
The Krohn-Rhodes decomposition theorem is a pivotal result in automata theory. It introduces the concept of cascade product, where two semiautomata, that is, automata devoid of initial and final states, are combined in a feed-forward fashion. The theorem states that any semiautomaton can be decomposed into a sequence of permutation-reset semiautomata. For the counter-free case, this decomposition consists entirely of reset components with two states each. This decomposition has significantly impacted recent research in various areas of computer science, including the identification of a class of transformer encoders equivalent to star-free languages and the conversion of Linear Temporal Logic formulas into past-only expressions (pastification). The paper revisits the cascade product in the context of reset automata, thus considering each component of the cascade as a language acceptor. First, we give regular expression counterparts of cascades of reset automata. We then establish several expressiveness results, identifying hierarchies of languages based on the restriction of the height (number of components) of the cascade or of the number of states in each level. We also show that any cascade of reset automata can be transformed, with a quadratic increase in height, into a cascade that only includes two-state components. Finally, we show that some fundamental operations on cascades, like intersection, union, negation, and concatenation with a symbol to the left, can be directly and efficiently computed by adding a two-state component.

Validity of Contextual Formulas

Authors: Javier Esparza and Rubén Rubio

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 311, 35th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2024)

Abstract
Many well-known logical identities are naturally written as equivalences between contextual formulas. A simple example is the Boole-Shannon expansion c[p] ≡ (p ∧ c[true]) ∨ (¬ p ∧ c[false]), where c denotes an arbitrary formula with possibly multiple occurrences of a "hole", called a context, and c[φ] denotes the result of "filling" all holes of c with the formula φ. Another example is the unfolding rule μX.c[X] ≡ c[μX.c[X]] of the modal μ-calculus. We consider the modal μ-calculus as overarching temporal logic and, as usual, reduce the problem whether φ₁ ≡ φ₂ holds for contextual formulas φ₁, φ₂ to the problem whether φ₁ ↔ φ₂ is valid. We show that the problem whether a contextual formula of the μ-calculus is valid for all contexts can be reduced to validity of ordinary formulas. Our first result constructs a canonical context such that a formula is valid for all contexts iff it is valid for this particular one. However, the ordinary formula is exponential in the nesting-depth of the context variables. In a second result we solve this problem, thus proving that validity of contextual formulas is EXP-complete, as for ordinary equivalences. We also prove that both results hold for CTL and LTL as well. We conclude the paper with some experimental results. In particular, we use our implementation to automatically prove the correctness of a set of six contextual equivalences of LTL recently introduced by Esparza et al. for the normalization of LTL formulas. While Esparza et al. need several pages of manual proof, our tool only needs milliseconds to do the job and to compute counterexamples for incorrect variants of the equivalences.

Model Checking Strategy-Controlled Rewriting Systems (System Description)

Authors: Rubén Rubio, Narciso Martí-Oliet, Isabel Pita, and Alberto Verdejo

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 131, 4th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2019)

Abstract
Strategies are widespread in Computer Science. In the domain of reduction and rewriting systems, strategies are studied as recipes to restrict and control reduction steps and rule applications, which are intimately local, in a derivation-global sense. This idea has been exploited by various tools and rewriting-based specification languages, where strategies are an additional specification layer. Systems so described need to be analyzed too. This article discusses model checking of systems controlled by strategies and presents a working strategy-aware LTL model checker for the Maude specification language, based on rewriting logic, and its strategy language.
