A Natural Language Formalization of Perfectoid Rings in ℕaproche

Authors: Peter Koepke

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 352, 16th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2025)

Abstract
This paper describes an experiment to formalize sophisticated mathematics in the ℕaproche proof assistant which uses natural language input and a first-order internal logic. We view this as a contribution to the ongoing discussion whether formal systems for research mathematics require complex, computer-orientated type systems or whether approaches closer to traditional mathematical practices are possible. The formalization also explores the limits of the current ℕaproche system and avenues for further development.

Improving the SMT Proof Reconstruction Pipeline in Isabelle/HOL

Abstract
Sledgehammer is a tool that increases the level of automation in the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant by asking external automatic theorem provers (ATPs), including SMT solvers, to prove the current goal. When the external ATP succeeds it must provide enough evidence that the goal holds for Isabelle to be able to reprove it internally based on that evidence. In particular, Isabelle can do this by replaying fine-grained proof certificates from proof-producing SMT solvers as long as they are expressed in the Alethe format, which until now was supported only by the veriT SMT solver. We report on our experience adding proof reconstruction support for the cvc5 SMT solver in Isabelle by extending cvc5 to produce proofs in the Alethe format and then adapting Isabelle to reconstruct those proofs. We discuss several difficulties and pitfalls we encountered and describe a set of tools and techniques we developed to improve the process. A notable outcome of this effort is that Isabelle can now be used as an independent proof checker for SMT problems written in the SMT-LIB standard. We evaluate cvc5’s integration on a set of SMT-LIB benchmarks originating from Isabelle as well as on a set of Isabelle proofs. Our results confirm that this integration complements and improves Sledgehammer’s capabilities.

Sledgehammering Without ATPs (Short Paper)

Authors: Martin Desharnais and Jasmin Blanchette

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 352, 16th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2025)

Abstract
We describe an alternative architecture for "hammers," inspired by Magnushammer, in which proofs are found by the proof assistant’s built-in automation instead of by external automatic theorem provers (ATPs). We implemented this approach in Isabelle’s Sledgehammer and evaluated it. The new ATP-free approach nicely complements the traditional Sledgehammer. The two approaches in combination solve more goals than the traditional ATP-based approach alone.

Scott’s Representation Theorem and the Univalent Karoubi Envelope

Authors: Arnoud van der Leer, Kobe Wullaert, and Benedikt Ahrens

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 352, 16th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2025)

Abstract
Lambek and Scott constructed a correspondence between simply-typed lambda calculi and Cartesian closed categories. Scott’s Representation Theorem is a cousin to this result for untyped lambda calculi. It states that every untyped lambda calculus arises from a reflexive object in some category. We present a formalization of Scott’s Representation Theorem in univalent foundations, in the (Rocq-)UniMath library. Specifically, we implement two proofs of that theorem, one by Scott and one by Hyland. We also explain the role of the Karoubi envelope - a categorical construction - in the proofs and the impact the chosen foundation has on this construction. Finally, we report on some automation we have implemented for the reduction of λ-terms.

Nondeterministic Asynchronous Dataflow in Isabelle/HOL

Authors: Rafael Castro Gonçalves Silva, Laouen Fernet, and Dmitriy Traytel

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 352, 16th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2025)

Abstract
We formalize nondeterministic asynchronous dataflow networks in Isabelle/HOL. Dataflow networks are comprised of operators that are capable of communicating with the network, performing silent computations, and making nondeterministic choices. We represent operators using a shallow embedding as codatatypes. Using this representation, we define standard asynchronous dataflow primitives, including sequential and parallel composition and a feedback operator. These primitives adhere to a number of laws from the literature, which we prove by coinduction using weak bisimilarity as our equality. Albeit coinductive and nondeterministic, our model is executable via code extraction to Haskell.

Canonical for Automated Theorem Proving in Lean

Authors: Chase Norman and Jeremy Avigad

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 352, 16th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2025)

Abstract
Canonical is a solver for type inhabitation in dependent type theory, that is, the problem of producing a term of a given type. We present a Lean tactic which invokes Canonical to generate proof terms and synthesize programs. The tactic supports higher-order and dependently-typed goals, structural recursion over indexed inductive types, and definitional equality. Canonical finds proofs for 84% of Natural Number Game problems in 51 seconds total.

An Isabelle/HOL Formalization of Semi-Thue and Conditional Semi-Thue Systems

Authors: Dohan Kim

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 352, 16th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2025)

Abstract
We present a formalized framework for semi-Thue and conditional semi-Thue systems for studying monoids and their word problem using the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant. We provide a formalized decision procedure for the word problem of monoids if they are finitely presented by complete semi-Thue systems. In particular, we present a new formalized method for checking confluence using (conditional) critical pairs for certain conditional semi-Thue systems. We propose and formalize an inference system for generating conditional equational theories and Thue congruences using conditional semi-Thue systems. Then we provide a new formalized decision procedure for the word problem of monoids which have finite complete (reductive) conditional presentations.

Solving Guarded Domain Equations in Presheaves over Ordinals and Mechanizing It

Authors: Sergei Stepanenko and Amin Timany

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
Constructing solutions to recursive domain equations is a well-known, important problem in the study of programs and programming languages. Mathematically speaking, the problem is finding a fixed point (up to isomorphism) of a suitable functor over a suitable category. A particularly useful instance, inspired by the step-indexing technique, is where the functor is over (a subcategory of) the category of presheaves over the ordinal ω and the functors are locally-contractive, also known as guarded functors. This corresponds to step-indexing over natural numbers. However, for certain problems, e.g., when dealing with infinite non-determinism, one needs to employ trans-finite step-indexing, i.e., consider presheaf categories over higher ordinals. Prior work on trans-finite step-indexing either only considers a very narrow class of functors over a particularly restricted subcategory of presheaves over higher ordinals, or treats the problem very generally working with sheaves over an arbitrary complete Heyting algebra with a well-founded basis. In this paper we present a solution to the guarded domain equations problem over all guarded functors over the category of presheaves over ordinal numbers, as well as its mechanization in the Rocq Prover. As the categories of sheaves and presheaves over ordinals are equivalent, our main contribution is simplifying prior work from the setting of the category of sheaves to the setting of the category of presheaves and mechanizing it - presheaves are more amenable to mechanization in a proof assistant.

Automatic Goal Clone Detection in Rocq

Authors: Ali Ghanbari

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 333, 39th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2025)

Abstract
Proof engineering in Rocq is a labor-intensive process, and as proof developments grow in size, redundancy and maintainability become challenges. One such redundancy is goal cloning, i.e., proving α-equivalent goals multiple times, leading to wasted effort and bloated proof scripts. In this paper, we introduce clone-finder, a novel technique for detecting goal clones in Rocq proofs. By leveraging the formal notion of α-equivalence for Gallina terms, clone-finder systematically identifies duplicated proof goals across large Rocq codebases. We evaluate clone-finder on 40 real-world Rocq projects from the CoqGym dataset. Our results reveal that each project contains an average of 27.73 instances of goal clone. We observed that the clones can be categorized as either exact goal duplication, generalization, or α-equivalent goals with different proofs, each signifying varying levels duplicate effort. Our findings highlight significant untapped potential for proof reuse in Rocq-based formal verification projects, paving the way for future improvements in automated proof engineering.

IsaBIL: A Framework for Verifying (In)correctness of Binaries in Isabelle/HOL

Authors: Matt Griffin, Brijesh Dongol, and Azalea Raad

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 333, 39th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2025)

Abstract
This paper presents IsaBIL, a binary analysis framework in Isabelle/HOL that is based on the widely used Binary Analysis Platform (BAP). Specifically, in IsaBIL, we formalise BAP’s intermediate language, called BIL and integrate it with Hoare logic (to enable proofs of correctness) as well as incorrectness logic (to enable proofs of incorrectness). IsaBIL inherits the full flexibility of BAP, allowing us to verify binaries for a wide range of languages (C, C++, Rust), toolchains (LLVM, Ghidra) and target architectures (x86, RISC-V), and can also be used when the source code for a binary is unavailable. To make verification tractable, we develop a number of big-step rules that combine BIL’s existing small-step rules at different levels of abstraction to support reuse. We develop high-level reasoning rules for RISC-V instructions (our main target architecture) to further optimise verification. Additionally, we develop Isabelle proof tactics that exploit common patterns in C binaries for RISC-V to discharge large numbers of proof goals (often in the 100s) automatically. IsaBIL includes an Isabelle/ML based parser for BIL programs, allowing one to automatically generate the associated Isabelle/HOL program locale from a BAP output. Taken together, IsaBIL provides a highly flexible proof environment for program binaries. As examples, we prove correctness of key examples from the Joint Strike Fighter coding standards and the MITRE database.

Distributed Parallel Build for the Isabelle Archive of Formal Proofs

Authors: Fabian Huch and Makarius Wenzel

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 309, 15th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2024)

Abstract
Motivated by the continuously growing performance demands for the Isabelle Archive of Formal Proofs (AFP), we introduce distributed cluster computing to the Isabelle platform. Parallel build time on a single node has approached 4h-8h in recent years: by supporting multiple nodes, without shared memory nor shared file-systems, we target at a substantial speedup factor to get below the critical limit of 45min total elapsed time. Our distributed build tool is part of the regular Isabelle distribution, but specifically adapted to cope with the structure of projects seen in the AFP. In this work, we address two main challenges: (1) the distributed system architecture that has been implemented in Isabelle/Scala, and (2) the build schedule optimization problem for multi-threaded tasks on multiple compute nodes. We introduce a heuristic tuned to the typical AFP session structure, which can generate good schedules in a few seconds. We reached a total speedup factor of over 100, which is a milestone never before reached. Using this approach, we could build the Isabelle distribution in 8min 10s elapsed time, and the AFP in 35min 40s, or 1h 59min 13s including very slow sessions.

Seventeen Provers Under the Hammer

Authors: Martin Desharnais, Petar Vukmirović, Jasmin Blanchette, and Makarius Wenzel

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 237, 13th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2022)

Abstract
One of the main success stories of automatic theorem provers has been their integration into proof assistants. Such integrations, or "hammers," increase proof automation and hence user productivity. In this paper, we use Isabelle/HOL’s Sledgehammer tool to find out how useful modern provers are at proving formulas in higher-order logic. Our evaluation follows in the steps of Böhme and Nipkow’s Judgment Day study from 2010, but instead of three provers we use 17, including SMT solvers and higher-order provers. Our work offers an alternative yardstick for comparing modern provers, next to the benchmarks and competitions emerging from the TPTP World and SMT-LIB.

Some Axioms for Mathematics

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 195, 6th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2021)

Abstract
The λΠ-calculus modulo theory is a logical framework in which many logical systems can be expressed as theories. We present such a theory, the theory {U}, where proofs of several logical systems can be expressed. Moreover, we identify a sub-theory of {U} corresponding to each of these systems, and prove that, when a proof in {U} uses only symbols of a sub-theory, then it is a proof in that sub-theory.

Making Isabelle Content Accessible in Knowledge Representation Formats

Authors: Michael Kohlhase, Florian Rabe, and Makarius Wenzel

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 175, 25th International Conference on Types for Proofs and Programs (TYPES 2019)

Abstract
The libraries of proof assistants like Isabelle, Coq, HOL are notoriously difficult to interpret by external tools: de facto, only the prover itself can parse and process them adequately. In the case of Isabelle, an export of the library into a FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) knowledge exchange format was already envisioned by the authors in 1999 but had previously proved too difficult. After substantial improvements of the Isabelle Prover IDE (PIDE) and the OMDoc/Mmt format since then, we are now able to deliver such an export. Concretely we present an integration of PIDE and Mmt that allows exporting all Isabelle libraries in OMDoc format. Our export covers the full Isabelle distribution and the Archive of Formal Proofs (AFP) - more than 12 thousand theories and locales resulting in over 65 GB of OMDoc/XML. Such a systematic export of Isabelle content to a well-defined interchange format like OMDoc enables many applications such as dependency management, independent proof checking, or library search.

Virtualization of HOL4 in Isabelle

Authors: Fabian Immler, Jonas Rädle, and Makarius Wenzel

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 141, 10th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2019)

Abstract
We present a novel approach to combine the HOL4 and Isabelle theorem provers: both are implemented in SML and based on distinctive variants of HOL. The design of HOL4 allows to replace its inference kernel modules, and the system infrastructure of Isabelle allows to embed other applications of SML. That is the starting point to provide a virtual instance of HOL4 in the same run-time environment as Isabelle. Moreover, with an implementation of a virtual HOL4 kernel that operates on Isabelle/HOL terms and theorems, we can load substantial HOL4 libraries to make them Isabelle theories, but still disconnected from existing Isabelle content. Finally, we introduce a methodology based on the transfer package of Isabelle to connect the imported HOL4 material to that of Isabelle/HOL.
