Abstract
Decentralized Finance (DeFi) has witnessed a monumental surge, reaching 53.039 billion USD in total value locked. As this sector continues to expand, ensuring the reliability of DeFi smart contracts becomes increasingly crucial. While some users are adept at reading code or the compiled bytecode to understand smart contracts, many rely on documentation. Therefore, discrepancies between the documentation and the deployed code can pose significant risks, whether these discrepancies are due to errors or intentional fraud. To tackle these challenges, we developed DeFiAligner, an end-to-end system to identify inconsistencies between documentation and smart contracts. DeFiAligner incorporates a symbolic execution tool, SEVM, which explores execution paths of on-chain binary code, recording memory and stack states. It automatically generates symbolic expressions for token balance changes and branch conditions, which, along with related project documents, are processed by LLMs. Using structured prompts, the LLMs evaluate the alignment between the symbolic expressions and the documentation. Our tests across three distinct scenarios demonstrate DeFiAligner’s capability to automate inconsistency detection in DeFi, achieving recall rates of 92% and 90% on two public datasets respectively.

Constraint Modelling with LLMs Using In-Context Learning

Authors: Kostis Michailidis, Dimos Tsouros, and Tias Guns

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 307, 30th International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP 2024)

Abstract
Constraint Programming (CP) allows for the modelling and solving of a wide range of combinatorial problems. However, modelling such problems using constraints over decision variables still requires significant expertise, both in conceptual thinking and syntactic use of modelling languages. In this work, we explore the potential of using pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) as coding assistants, to transform textual problem descriptions into concrete and executable CP specifications. We present different transformation pipelines with explicit intermediate representations, and we investigate the potential benefit of various retrieval-augmented example selection strategies for in-context learning. We evaluate our approach on 2 datasets from the literature, namely NL4Opt (optimisation) and Logic Grid Puzzles (satisfaction), and a heterogeneous set of exercises from a CP course. The results show that pre-trained LLMs have promising potential for initialising the modelling process, with retrieval-augmented in-context learning significantly enhancing their modelling capabilities.

Fast Matrix Multiplication Without Tears: A Constraint Programming Approach

Authors: Arnaud Deza, Chang Liu, Pashootan Vaezipoor, and Elias B. Khalil

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 280, 29th International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP 2023)

Abstract
It is known that the multiplication of an N × M matrix with an M × P matrix can be performed using fewer multiplications than what the naive NMP approach suggests. The most famous instance of this is Strassen’s algorithm for multiplying 2× 2 matrices in 7 instead of 8 multiplications. This gives rise to the constraint satisfaction problem of fast matrix multiplication, where a set of R < NMP multiplication terms must be chosen and combined such that they satisfy correctness constraints on the output matrix. Despite its highly combinatorial nature, this problem has not been exhaustively examined from that perspective, as evidenced for example by the recent deep reinforcement learning approach of AlphaTensor. In this work, we propose a simple yet novel Constraint Programming approach to find algorithms for fast matrix multiplication or provide proof of infeasibility otherwise. We propose a set of symmetry-breaking constraints and valid inequalities that are particularly helpful in proving infeasibility. On the feasible side, we find that exploiting solver performance variability in conjunction with a sparsity-based problem decomposition enables finding solutions for larger (feasible) instances of fast matrix multiplication. Our experimental results using CP Optimizer demonstrate that we can find fast matrix multiplication algorithms for matrices up to 3× 3 with R = 23 in a short amount of time.

Enumeration of d-Combining Tree-Child Networks

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 225, 33rd International Conference on Probabilistic, Combinatorial and Asymptotic Methods for the Analysis of Algorithms (AofA 2022)

Abstract
Tree-child networks are one of the most prominent network classes for modeling evolutionary processes which contain reticulation events. Several recent studies have addressed counting questions for bicombining tree-child networks which are tree-child networks with every reticulation node having exactly two parents. In this paper, we extend these studies to d-combining tree-child networks where every reticulation node has now d ≥ 2 parents. Moreover, we also give results and conjectures on the distributional behavior of the number of reticulation nodes of a network which is drawn uniformly at random from the set of all tree-child networks with the same number of leaves.

Scala with Explicit Nulls

Authors: Abel Nieto, Yaoyu Zhao, Ondřej Lhoták, Angela Chang, and Justin Pu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 166, 34th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2020)

Abstract
The Scala programming language makes all reference types implicitly nullable. This is a problem, because null references do not support most operations that do make sense on regular objects, leading to runtime errors. In this paper, we present a modification to the Scala type system that makes nullability explicit in the types. Specifically, we make reference types non-nullable by default, while still allowing for nullable types via union types. We have implemented this design for explicit nulls as a fork of the Dotty (Scala 3) compiler. We evaluate our scheme by migrating a number of Scala libraries to use explicit nulls. Finally, we give a denotational semantics of type nullification, the interoperability layer between Java and Scala with explicit nulls. We show a soundness theorem stating that, for variants of System F_ω that model Java and Scala, nullification preserves values of types.

Scala with Explicit Nulls (Artifact)

Authors: Abel Nieto, Yaoyu Zhao, Ondřej Lhoták, Angela Chang, and Justin Pu

Published in: DARTS, Volume 6, Issue 2, Special Issue of the 34th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2020)

Abstract
This artifact is a companion to the paper "Scala with Explicit Nulls", where we present a modification to the Scala type system that makes nullability explicit in the types. Specifically, we make reference types non-nullable by default, while still allowing for nullable types via union types. The artifact contains an implementation of this new type system design as a fork of the Dotty (Scala 3) compiler. Additionally, the artifact contains the source code of multiple Scala libraries that we used to evaluate our design.

On-Line Pattern Matching on Similar Texts

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 78, 28th Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM 2017)

Abstract
Pattern matching on a set of similar texts has received much attention, especially recently, mainly due to its application in cataloguing human genetic variation. In particular, many different algorithms have been proposed for the off-line version of this problem; that is, constructing a compressed index for a set of similar texts in order to answer pattern matching queries efficiently. However, the on-line, more fundamental, version of this problem is a rather undeveloped topic. Solutions to the on-line version can be beneficial for a number of reasons; for instance, efficient on-line solutions can be used in combination with partial indexes as practical trade-offs. We make here an attempt to close this gap via proposing two efficient algorithms for this problem. Notably, one of the algorithms requires time linear in the size of the texts' representation, for short patterns. Furthermore, experimental results confirm our theoretical findings in practical terms.
