Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

Efficiency of Learned Indexes on Genome Spectra

Abstract
Data structures on a multiset of genomic k-mers are at the heart of many bioinformatic tools. As genomic datasets grow in scale, the efficiency of these data structures increasingly depends on how well they leverage the inherent patterns in the data. One recent and effective approach is the use of learned indexes that approximate the rank function of a multiset using a piecewise linear function with very few segments. However, theoretical worst-case analysis struggles to predict the practical performance of these indexes. We address this limitation by developing a novel measure of piecewise-linear approximability of the data, called CaPLa (Canonical Piecewise Linear approximability). CaPLa builds on the empirical observation that a power-law model often serves as a reasonable proxy for piecewise linear-approximability, while explicitly accounting for deviations from a true power-law fit. We prove basic properties of CaPLa and present an efficient algorithm to compute it. We then demonstrate that CaPLa can accurately predict space bounds for data structures on real data. Empirically, we analyze over 500 genomes through the lens of CaPLa, revealing that it varies widely across the tree of life and even within individual genomes. Finally, we study the robustness of CaPLa as a measure and the factors that make genomic k-mer multisets different from random ones.

Toward an Earth-Independent System for EVA Mission Planning: Integrating Physical Models, Domain Knowledge, and Agentic RAG to Provide Explainable LLM-Based Decision Support

Abstract
We propose a unified framework for an Earth‑independent AI system that provides explainable, context‑aware decision support for EVA mission planning by integrating six core components: a fine‑tuned EVA domain LLM, a retrieval‑augmented knowledge base, a short-term memory store, physical simulation models, an agentic orchestration layer, and a multimodal user interface. To ground our design, we analyze the current roles and substitution potential of the Mission Control Center - identifying which procedural and analytical functions can be automated onboard while preserving human oversight for experiential and strategic tasks. Building on this framework, we introduce RASAGE (Retrieval & Simulation Augmented Guidance Agent for Exploration), a proof‑of‑concept toolset that combines Microsoft Phi‑4‑mini‑instruct with a FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search)‑powered EVA knowledge base and custom A* path planning and hypogravity metabolic models to generate grounded, traceable EVA plans. We outline a staged validation strategy to evaluate improvements in route efficiency, metabolic prediction accuracy, anomaly response effectiveness, and crew trust under realistic communication delays. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of replicating key Mission Control functions onboard, enhancing crew autonomy, reducing cognitive load, and improving safety for deep‑space exploration missions.

Fast Pseudoalignment Queries on Compressed Colored de Bruijn Graphs

Abstract
Motivation. Indexes for the colored de Bruijn graph (c-dBG) play a crucial role in computational biology by facilitating complex tasks such as read mapping and assembly. These indexes map k-mers (substrings of length k) appearing in a large collection of reference strings to the set of identifiers of the strings where they appear. These sets, colloquially referred to as color sets, tend to occupy large quantities of memory, especially for large pangenomes. Our previous work thus focused on leveraging the repetitiveness of the color sets to improve the space effectiveness of the resulting index. As a matter of fact, repetition-aware indexes can be up to one order of magnitude smaller on large pangenomes compared to indexes that do not exploit such repetitiveness. Such improved space effectiveness, on the other hand, imposes an overhead at query time when performing tasks such as pseudoalignment that require the collection and processing of multiple related color sets. Methods. In this paper, we show how to avoid this overhead. We devise novel query algorithms tailored for the specific repetition-aware representations adopted by the Fulgor index, a state-of-the-art c-dBG index, to significantly improve its pseudoalignment efficiency and without consuming additional space. Results. Our results indicate that with increasing redundancy in the pangenomes, the compression factor provided by the Fulgor index increases, while the relative query time actually reduces. For example, while the space of the Fulgor index improves by 2.5× with repetition-aware compression and its query time improves by 1.6× on a collection of 5,000 Salmonella Enterica genomes, these factors become (6.1×,2.8×) and (11.2×,3.2×) for 50,000 and 150,000 genomes respectively. For an even larger collection of 300,000 genomes, we obtained an index that is 22.3× smaller and 2.2× faster.

Hash & Adjust: Competitive Demand-Aware Consistent Hashing

Abstract
Distributed systems often serve dynamic workloads and resource demands evolve over time. Such a temporal behavior stands in contrast to the static and demand-oblivious nature of most data structures used by these systems. In this paper, we are particularly interested in consistent hashing, a fundamental building block in many large distributed systems. Our work is motivated by the hypothesis that a more adaptive approach to consistent hashing can leverage structure in the demand, and hence improve storage utilization and reduce access time. We initiate the study of demand-aware consistent hashing. Our main contribution is H&A, a constant-competitive online algorithm (i.e., it comes with provable performance guarantees over time). H&A is demand-aware and optimizes its internal structure to enable faster access times, while offering a high utilization of storage. We further evaluate H&A empirically.

Towards Representing Processes and Reasoning with Process Descriptions on the Web

Abstract
We work towards a vocabulary to represent processes and temporal logic specifications as graph-structured data. Different fields use incompatible terminologies for describing essentially the same process-related concepts. In addition, processes can be represented from different perspectives and levels of abstraction: both state-centric and event-centric perspectives offer distinct insights into the underlying processes. In this work, we strive to unify the representation of processes and related concepts by leveraging the power of knowledge graphs. We survey approaches to representing processes and reasoning with process descriptions from different fields and provide a selection of scenarios to help inform the scope of a unified representation of processes. We focus on processes that can be executed and observed via web interfaces. We propose to provide a representation designed to combine state-centric and event-centric perspectives while incorporating temporal querying and reasoning capabilities on temporal logic specifications. A standardised vocabulary and representation for processes and temporal specifications would contribute towards bridging the gap between the terminologies from different fields and fostering the broader application of methods involving temporal logics, such as formal verification and program synthesis.

Machine Learning and Knowledge Graphs: Existing Gaps and Future Research Challenges

Abstract
The graph model is nowadays largely adopted to model a wide range of knowledge and data, spanning from social networks to knowledge graphs (KGs), representing a successful paradigm of how symbolic and transparent AI can scale on the World Wide Web. However, due to their unprecedented volume, they are generally tackled by Machine Learning (ML) and mostly numeric based methods such as graph embedding models (KGE) and deep neural networks (DNNs). The latter methods have been proved lately very efficient, leading the current AI spring. In this vision paper, we introduce some of the main existing methods for combining KGs and ML, divided into two categories: those using ML to improve KGs, and those using KGs to improve results on ML tasks. From this introduction, we highlight research gaps and perspectives that we deem promising and currently under-explored for the involved research communities, spanning from KG support for LLM prompting, integration of KG semantics in ML models to symbol-based methods, interpretability of ML models, and the need for improved benchmark datasets. In our opinion, such perspectives are stepping stones in an ultimate view of KGs as central assets for neuro-symbolic and explainable AI.

Autonomy in the Age of Knowledge Graphs: Vision and Challenges

Abstract
In this position paper, we propose that Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are one of the prime approaches to support the programming of autonomous software systems at the knowledge level. From this viewpoint, we survey how KGs can support different dimensions of autonomy in such systems: For example, the autonomy of systems with respect to their environment, or with respect to organisations; and we discuss related practical and research challenges. We emphasise that KGs need to be able to support systems of autonomous software agents that are themselves highly heterogeneous, which limits how these systems may use KGs. Furthermore, these heterogeneous software agents may populate highly dynamic environments, which implies that they require adaptive KGs. The scale of the envisioned systems - possibly stretching to the size of the Internet - highlights the maintainability of the underlying KGs that need to contain large-scale knowledge, which requires that KGs are maintained jointly by humans and machines. Furthermore, autonomous agents require procedural knowledge, and KGs should hence be explored more towards the provisioning of such knowledge to augment autonomous behaviour. Finally, we highlight the importance of modelling choices, including with respect to the selected abstraction level when modelling and with respect to the provisioning of more expressive constraint languages.

Engineering Reliable Multiagent Systems (Dagstuhl Seminar 19112)

Abstract
This report documents the program and outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 19112 "Engineering Reliable Multiagent Systems". The aim of this seminar was to bring together researchers from various scientific disciplines, such as software engineering of autonomous systems, software verification, and relevant subareas of AI, such as ethics and machine learning, to discuss the emerging topic of the reliability of (multi-)agent systems and autonomous systems in particular. The ultimate aim of the seminar was to establish a new research agenda for engineering reliable autonomous systems.

Abstract
This chapter takes a closer look at computational logic approaches for the design, verification and the implementation of normative multi-agent systems. After a short overview of existing formalisms, architectures and implementation languages, an overview of current research challenges is provided.

Engineering Multi-Agent Systems (Dagstuhl Seminar 12342)

Abstract
This report documents the programme and outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 12342 ``Engineering multiagent Systems''. The seminar brought together researchers from both academia and industry to identify the potential for and facilitate convergence towards standards for agent technology. As such it was particularly relevant to industrial research. A key objective of the seminar, moreover, has been to establish a road map for engineering multiagent systems. Various research areas have been identified as important topics for a research agenda with a focus on the development of multiagent systems. Among others, these include the integration of agent technology and legacy systems, component-based agent design, standards for tooling, establishing benchmarks for agent technology, and the development of frameworks for coordination and organisation of multiagent systems. This report presents a more detailed discussion of these and other research challenges that were identified. The unique atmosphere of Dagstuhl provided the perfect environment for leading researchers from a wide variety of backgrounds to discuss future directions in programming languages, tools and platforms for multiagent systems, and the road map produced by the seminar will have a timely and decisive impact on the future of this whole area of research.
