Reward Interfaces with Best-Effort Implementations

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
Interface theories, notably interface automata, serve as expressive frameworks for component-based design, specifying component behavior and interaction in concurrent systems. Traditional interface formalisms specify assumptions that a component’s environment must satisfy and the guarantees that each component provides. This qualitative view of component interaction based on imposing strict assumptions and Boolean guarantees may, however, not be expressive enough to capture the system’s allowed or desired behaviors under different environments. In this paper, we introduce reward interfaces to support component-based design while accommodating multi-valued correctness requirements and adaptive best-effort satisfaction of component’s guarantees. Building upon interface automata, our framework enables modeling a rich class of quantitative component specifications. We propose formal notions of implementation, refinement and compatibility for reward interfaces. We study a class of reward interfaces with automata-based representations, for which we provide algorithms for checking compatibility and refinement, and existence of best-effort implementations. Our framework offers a comprehensive approach to reward interface specification and design.

Formal Verification of a Fail-Safe Cross-Chain Bridge

Authors: Filip Marić, Bernhard Scholz, and Pavle Subotić

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 129, 6th International Workshop on Formal Methods for Blockchains (FMBC 2025)

Abstract
Cross-chain bridges are financial services that interconnect blockchains. High monetary values flow through these bridges, and their security must be safeguarded. However, designing real-world cross-chain bridges is a difficult endeavor. Due to blockchain’s closed-world nature, tokens cannot be transferred from a sender to a receiver chain; on the contrary, they need complex logic that maintains an equilibrium on both chains, even if either the chains or the bridge fail. This paper formally verifies a model of a novel fail-safe cross-chain bridge to ensure correctness. We define formal requirements and prove the bridge is safe using the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant.

A Hybrid Programming Language for Formal Modeling and Verification of Hybrid Systems

Authors: Eduard Kamburjan, Stefan Mitsch, and Reiner Hähnle

Published in: LITES, Volume 8, Issue 2 (2022): Special Issue on Distributed Hybrid Systems. Leibniz Transactions on Embedded Systems, Volume 8, Issue 2

Abstract
Designing and modeling complex cyber-physical systems (CPS) faces the double challenge of combined discrete-continuous dynamics and concurrent behavior. Existing formal modeling and verification languages for CPS expose the underlying proof search technology. They lack high-level structuring elements and are not efficiently executable. The ensuing modeling gap renders formal CPS models hard to understand and to validate. We propose a high-level programming-based approach to formal modeling and verification of hybrid systems as a hybrid extension of an Active Objects language. Well-structured hybrid active programs and requirements allow automatic, reachability-preserving translation into differential dynamic logic, a logic for hybrid (discrete-continuous) programs. Verification is achieved by discharging the resulting formulas with the theorem prover KeYmaera X. We demonstrate the usability of our approach with case studies.

Higher-Dimensional Timed and Hybrid Automata

Authors: Uli Fahrenberg

Published in: LITES, Volume 8, Issue 2 (2022): Special Issue on Distributed Hybrid Systems. Leibniz Transactions on Embedded Systems, Volume 8, Issue 2

Abstract
We introduce a new formalism of higher-dimensional timed automata, based on Pratt and van Glabbeek’s higher-dimensional automata and Alur and Dill’s timed automata. We prove that their reachability is PSPACE-complete and can be decided using zone-based algorithms. We also extend the setting to higher-dimensional hybrid automata. The interest of our formalism is in modeling systems which exhibit both real-time behavior and concurrency. Other existing formalisms for real-time modeling identify concurrency and interleaving, which, as we shall argue, is problematic.

Design and Analysis of a Logless Dynamic Reconfiguration Protocol

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 217, 25th International Conference on Principles of Distributed Systems (OPODIS 2021)

Abstract
Distributed replication systems based on the replicated state machine model have become ubiquitous as the foundation of modern database systems. To ensure availability in the presence of faults, these systems must be able to dynamically replace failed nodes with healthy ones via dynamic reconfiguration. MongoDB is a document oriented database with a distributed replication mechanism derived from the Raft protocol. In this paper, we present MongoRaftReconfig, a novel dynamic reconfiguration protocol for the MongoDB replication system. MongoRaftReconfig utilizes a logless approach to managing configuration state and decouples the processing of configuration changes from the main database operation log. The protocol’s design was influenced by engineering constraints faced when attempting to redesign an unsafe, legacy reconfiguration mechanism that existed previously in MongoDB. We provide a safety proof of MongoRaftReconfig, along with a formal specification in TLA+. To our knowledge, this is the first published safety proof and formal specification of a reconfiguration protocol for a Raft-based system. We also present results from model checking the safety properties of MongoRaftReconfig on finite protocol instances. Finally, we discuss the conceptual novelties of MongoRaftReconfig, how it can be understood as an optimized and generalized version of the single server reconfiguration algorithm of Raft, and present an experimental evaluation of how its optimizations can provide performance benefits for reconfigurations.

Brief Announcement: Design and Verification of a Logless Dynamic Reconfiguration Protocol in MongoDB Replication

Authors: William Schultz, Siyuan Zhou, and Stavros Tripakis

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 209, 35th International Symposium on Distributed Computing (DISC 2021)

Abstract
We introduce a novel dynamic reconfiguration protocol for the MongoDB replication system that extends and generalizes the single server reconfiguration protocol of the Raft consensus algorithm. Our protocol decouples the processing of configuration changes from the main database operation log, which allows reconfigurations to proceed in cases when the main log is prevented from processing new operations. Additionally, this decoupling allows for configuration state to be managed by a logless replicated state machine, storing only the latest version of the configuration and avoiding the complexities of a log-based protocol. We present a formal specification of the protocol in TLA+, initial verification results of model checking its safety properties, and an experimental evaluation of how reconfigurations are able to quickly restore a system to healthy operation when node failures have stalled the main operation log. This announcement is a short version and the full paper is available at [Schultz et al., 2021].

From Dataflow Specification to Multiprocessor Partitioned Time-triggered Real-time Implementation

Authors: Thomas Carle, Dumitru Potop-Butucaru, Yves Sorel, and David Lesens

Published in: LITES, Volume 2, Issue 2 (2015). Leibniz Transactions on Embedded Systems, Volume 2, Issue 2

Abstract
Our objective is to facilitate the development of complex time-triggered systems by automating the allocation and scheduling steps. We show that full automation is possible while taking into account the elements of complexity needed by a complex embedded control system. More precisely, we consider deterministic functional specifications provided (as often in an industrial setting) by means of synchronous data-flow models with multiple modes and multiple relative periods. We first extend this functional model with an original real-time characterization that takes advantage of our time-triggered framework to provide a simpler representation of complex end-to-end flow requirements. We also extend our specifications with additional non-functional properties specifying partitioning, allocation, and preemptability constraints. Then, we provide novel algorithms for the off-line scheduling of these extended specifications onto partitioned time-triggered architectures à la ARINC 653. The main originality of our work is that it takes into account at the same time multiple complexity elements: various types of non-functional properties (real-time, partitioning, allocation, preemptability) and functional specifications with conditional execution and multiple modes. Allocation of time slots/windows to partitions can be fully or partially provided, or synthesized by our tool. Our algorithms allow the automatic allocation and scheduling onto multi-processor (distributed) systems with a global time base, taking into account communication costs. We demonstrate our technique on a model of space flight software system with strong real-time determinism requirements.
