A Survey of Real-Time Support, Analysis, and Advancements in ROS 2

Abstract
The Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) has emerged as a relevant middleware framework for robotic applications, offering modularity, distributed execution, and communication. In the last six years, ROS 2 has drawn increasing attention from the real-time systems community and industry. This survey presents a comprehensive overview of research efforts that analyze, enhance, and extend ROS 2 to support real-time execution. We first provide a detailed description of the internal scheduling mechanisms of ROS 2 and its layered architecture, including the interaction with DDS-based communication and other communication middleware. We then review key contributions from the literature, covering timing analysis for both single- and multi-threaded executors, metrics such as response time, reaction time, and data age, and different communication modes. The survey also discusses community-driven enhancements to the ROS 2 runtime, including new executor algorithm designs, real-time GPU management, and microcontroller support via micro-ROS. Furthermore, we summarize techniques for bounding DDS communication delays, message filters, and profiling tools that have been developed to support analysis and experimentation. To help systematize this growing body of work, we introduce taxonomies that classify the surveyed contributions based on different criteria. This survey aims to guide both researchers and practitioners in understanding and improving the real-time capabilities of ROS 2.

On the Computational Cost of Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
Over a decade, numerous Knowledge Graph Embedding (KGE) models have been designed and evaluated on reference datasets, always with increasing performance. In this paper, we re-evaluate these models with respect to their computational efficiency during training, by estimating the computational cost of the procedure expressed in floating-point operations. We design a cost model based on analytical expressions and apply it on a collection of 20 KGE models, representative of the state-of-the-art. We show that dimensionality or parameter efficiency, used in the literature to compare models with each other, are not suitable to evaluate the true cost of models. Through fixed-budget experiments, a novel approach to evaluate KGE models based on cost estimates, we re-assess the relative performance of model families compared to the state-of-the-art. Bilinear models such as ComplEx underperform with a low computational budget while hyperbolic linear models appear to offer no particular benefit compared to simpler Euclidian models, especially the MuRE model. Neural models, such as ConvE or CompGCN, achieve reasonable performance in the literature but their high computational cost appears unnecessary when compared with other models. The trade-off between efficiency and expressivity of both linear and neural models is to be further explored.

Integrated Memory Grouping and Power-Aware MBIST Scheduling for MPSoCs

Abstract
Memory Built-In Self-Test (MBIST) is a widely adopted technique for testing memory. In modern large-scale SoCs, hundreds to thousands of embedded memories are integrated, and to test them efficiently, methods that group memories and test them in parallel within each group are employed. However, many existing approaches either do not account for test scheduling or rely on evolutionary methods, such as genetic algorithms (GAs), for grouping, which incur high computational costs. In this work, we propose a framework that covers the flow from memory grouping to test scheduling. Taking the specifications and layout information of multiple SRAMs into account, the framework comprises a flexible, fast memory grouping method and a scheduling method that minimizes the total test time under a power-constrained constraint. In the proposed approach, DBSCAN and rectangular partitioning are used to perform fast grouping while suppressing long routing connections, and an LPT-based greedy heuristic is employed to shorten the total test time under constraints on the power limit and the number of simultaneously active BIST controllers. Experimental evaluation using SRAM placement data based on the ASAP7 PDK shows that, compared with existing K-means, Greedy, and GA-based methods, the proposed method reduces the number of groups by up to 48% while achieving approximately 87× speedup in clustering runtime. Furthermore, compared with a commercial Industrial Solution, it reduces the test time by 53%. These results demonstrate that the proposed method provides high scalability and practical effectiveness for MBIST design, even in large-scale MPSoCs with a large number and variety of embedded memories.

Colouring Probe H-Free Graphs

Abstract
The NP-complete problems Colouring and k-Colouring (k ≥ 3) are well studied on H-free graphs, i.e., graphs that do not contain some fixed graph H as an induced subgraph. We research to what extent the known polynomial-time algorithms for H-free graphs can be generalized if we only know some of the edges of the input graph. We do this by considering the classical probe graph model introduced in the early nineties. For a graph H, a partitioned probe H-free graph (G,P,N) consists of a graph G = (V,E), together with a set P ⊆ V of probes and an independent set N = V ⧵ P of non-probes, such that G+F is H-free for some edge set F ⊆ binom(N,2). We show the following: - We fully classify Colouring on partitioned probe H-free graphs and show that the obtained complexity dichotomy differs from the known dichotomy of Colouring for H-free graphs. - We fully classify 3-Colouring on partitioned probe P_t-free graphs: we prove polynomial-time solvability for t ≤ 5 and NP-completeness for t ≥ 6. In contrast, 3-Colouring on P_t-free graphs is known to be polynomial-time solvable for t ≤ 7 and quasi-polynomial-time solvable for t ≥ 8. Our main result is our polynomial-time algorithm for 3-Colouring on partitioned P₅-free graphs. For this result, and also for all our other polynomial-time results, we do not need to know the edge set F; we only need to know its existence. Moreover, the class of probe P₅-free graphs includes not only paths of arbitrary length but even all bipartite graphs and is much richer than the class of P₅-free graphs. The latter is also evidenced by the fact that there exist graph problems, such as Matching Cut, that are known to be polynomial-time solvable for P₅-free graphs but NP-complete for partitioned probe P₅-free graphs. In particular, unlike the class of 3-colourable P₅-free graphs, the class of 3-colourable probe P₅-free graphs has unbounded mim-width. Hence, our polynomial-time result for 3-Colouring for probe P₅-free graphs suggests that there may be another, deeper overarching reason why 3-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable for P₅-free graphs.

Mind the Gap. Doubling Constant Parametrization of Weighted Problems: TSP, Max-Cut, and More

Abstract
Despite much research, hard weighted problems still resist super-polynomial improvements over their textbook solution. On the other hand, the unweighted versions of these problems have recently witnessed the sought-after speedups. Currently, the only way to repurpose the algorithm of the unweighted version for the weighted version is to employ a polynomial embedding of the input weights. This, however, introduces a pseudo-polynomial factor into the running time, which becomes impractical for arbitrarily weighted instances. In this paper, we introduce a new way to repurpose the algorithm of the unweighted problem. Specifically, we show that the time complexity of several well-known NP-hard problems operating over the (min, +) and (max, +) semirings, such as TSP, Weighted Max-Cut, and Edge-Weighted k-Clique, is proportional to that of their unweighted versions when the set of input weights has small doubling. We achieve this by a meta-algorithm that converts the input weights into polynomially bounded integers using the recent constructive Freiman’s theorem by Randolph and Węgrzycki [ESA 2024] before applying the polynomial embedding.

Lower Bounds on Tree Covers

Abstract
Given an n-point metric space (X,d_X), a tree cover 𝒯 is a set of |𝒯| = k trees on X such that every pair of vertices in X has a low-distortion path in one of the trees in 𝒯. Tree covers have been playing a crucial role in graph algorithms for decades, and the research focus is the construction of tree covers with small size k and distortion. When k = 1, the best distortion is known to be Θ(n). For a constant k ≥ 2, the best distortion upper bound is Õ(n^{1/k}) and the strongest lower bound is Ω(log_k n), leaving a gap to be closed. In this paper, we improve the lower bound to Ω(n^{1/(2^{k-1)}}). Our proof is a novel analysis on a structurally simple grid-like graph, which utilizes some combinatorial fixed-point theorems. We believe that they will prove useful for analyzing other tree-like data structures as well.

Time-Optimal and Energy-Efficient Deterministic Consensus

Abstract
We study fault-tolerant consensus in a variant of the synchronous message passing model, where, in each round, every node can choose to be awake or asleep. This is known as the sleeping model (Chatterjee, Gmyr, Pandurangan PODC 2020) and defines the awake complexity (also called energy complexity), which measures the maximum number of rounds that any node is awake throughout the execution. Only awake nodes can send and receive messages in a given round and all messages sent to sleeping nodes are lost. We present new deterministic consensus algorithms that tolerate up to f < n crash failures, where n is the number of nodes. Our algorithms match the optimal time complexity lower bound of f+1 rounds. For multi-value consensus, where the input values are chosen from some possibly large set, we achieve an energy complexity of 𝒪(⌈ f² / n ⌉) rounds, whereas for binary consensus, we show an algorithm to achieve 𝒪(⌈ f / √n ⌉) energy complexity.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

Energy-Efficient Maximal Independent Sets in Radio Networks

Abstract
The maximal independent set (MIS) is one of the most fundamental problems in distributed computing, and it has been studied intensively for over four decades. This paper focuses on the MIS problem in the radio network model, a standard model widely used to model wireless networks, particularly ad hoc wireless and sensor networks. Energy is a premium resource in these networks, which are typically battery-powered. Hence, designing distributed algorithms that use as little energy as possible is crucial. We use the well-established energy model where a node can be sleeping or awake in a round, and only the awake rounds (when it can send or listen) determine the energy complexity of the algorithm, which we want to minimize. We present new, more energy-efficient MIS algorithms in radio networks with arbitrary and unknown graph topology. We present algorithms for two popular variants of the radio model - with collision detection (CD) and without collision detection (no-CD). Specifically, we obtain the following results: 1) CD model: We present a randomized distributed MIS algorithm with energy complexity O(log n), round complexity O(log² n), and failure probability 1 / poly(n), where n is the network size. We show that our energy complexity is optimal by showing a matching Ω(log n) lower bound. 2) no-CD model: In the more challenging no-CD model, we present a randomized distributed MIS algorithm with energy complexity O(log²n log log n), round complexity O(log³ n log Δ), and failure probability 1 / poly(n). The energy complexity of our algorithm is significantly lower than the round (and energy) complexity of O(log³ n) of the best known distributed MIS algorithm of Davies [PODC 2023] for arbitrary graph topology.

Resilience in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
In recent years, knowledge graphs have gained interest and witnessed widespread applications in various domains, such as information retrieval, question-answering, recommendation systems, amongst others. Large-scale knowledge graphs to this end have demonstrated their utility in effectively representing structured knowledge. To further facilitate the application of machine learning techniques, knowledge graph embedding models have been developed. Such models can transform entities and relationships within knowledge graphs into vectors. However, these embedding models often face challenges related to noise, missing information, distribution shift, adversarial attacks, etc. This can lead to sub-optimal embeddings and incorrect inferences, thereby negatively impacting downstream applications. While the existing literature has focused so far on adversarial attacks on KGE models, the challenges related to the other critical aspects remain unexplored. In this paper, we, first of all, give a unified definition of resilience, encompassing several factors such as generalisation, in-distribution generalization, distribution adaption, and robustness. After formalizing these concepts for machine learning in general, we define them in the context of knowledge graphs. To find the gap in the existing works on resilience in the context of knowledge graphs, we perform a systematic survey, taking into account all these aspects mentioned previously. Our survey results show that most of the existing works focus on a specific aspect of resilience, namely robustness. After categorizing such works based on their respective aspects of resilience, we discuss the challenges and future research directions.

GraphRAG on Technical Documents - Impact of Knowledge Graph Schema

Abstract
Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) is seeing rapid adoption in industry to enable employees to query information captured in proprietary data for their organisation. In this work, we test the impact of domain-relevant knowledge graph schemas on the results of Microsoft’s GraphRAG pipeline. Our approach aims to address the poor quality of GraphRAG responses on technical reports rich in domain-specific terms. The use case involves technical reports about geology, chemistry and mineral processing published by the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA). Four schemas are considered: a simple five-class minerals domain expert-developed schema, an expanded minerals domain schema, the Microsoft GraphRAG auto-generated schema, and a schema-less GraphRAG. These are compared to a conventional baseline RAG. Performance is evaluated using a scoring approach that accounts for the mix of correct, incorrect, additional, and missing content in RAG responses. The results show that the simple five-class minerals domain schema extracts approximately 10% more entities from the MRIWA reports than the other schema options. Additionally, both the five-class and the expanded eight-class minerals domain schemas produce the most factually correct answers and the fewest hallucinations. We attribute this to the minerals-specific schemas extracting more relevant, domain-specific information during the Indexing stage. As a result, the Query stage’s context window includes more high-value content. This contributes to the observed improvement in answer quality compared to the other pipelines. In contrast, pipelines with fewer domain-related entities in the KG retrieve less valuable information, leaving more room for irrelevant content in the context window. Baseline RAG responses were typically shorter, less complete, and contained more hallucinations compared to our GraphRAG pipelines. Connected Partitions via Connected Dominating Sets

Abstract
The classical theorem due to Győri and Lovász states that any k-connected graph G admits a partition into k connected subgraphs, where each subgraph has a prescribed size and contains a prescribed vertex, as long as the total size of target subgraphs is equal to the size of G. However, this result is notoriously evasive in terms of efficient constructions, and it is still unknown whether such a partition can be computed in polynomial time, even for k = 5. We make progress towards an efficient constructive version of the Győri-Lovász theorem by considering a natural strengthening of the k-connectivity requirement. Specifically, we show that the desired connected partition can be found in polynomial time, if G contains k disjoint connected dominating sets. As a consequence of this result, we give several efficient approximate and exact constructive versions of the original Győri-Lovász theorem: - On general graphs, a Győri-Lovász partition with k parts can be computed in polynomial time when the input graph has connectivity Ω(k ⋅ log² n); - On convex bipartite graphs, connectivity of 4k is sufficient; - On biconvex graphs and interval graphs, connectivity of k is sufficient, meaning that our algorithm gives a "true" constructive version of the theorem on these graph classes.

Virtual Reality Prototyping Environment for Concurrent Design, Training and Rover Operations

Abstract
As part of the CASIMAR (Collaborative Astronaut Supporting Interregional Moon Analog Rover) project, initiated by the BVSR e.V. (Bundesverband Studentischer Raumfahrt), the TUDSaT (TU Darmstadt Space Technology e.V.) team is developing a Virtual Reality (VR) prototype environment to support the interdisciplinary design process of lunar exploration technologies. Given the complexity of collaboration among eight organizations, this tool aims to streamline design integration and enhance mission planning. The primary objective is to create a comprehensive 3D model of the rover, complete with predefined procedures and activities, to simulate astronaut-robot interaction. By leveraging VR technology, astronauts can familiarize themselves with the rover and its EVA (Extravehicular Activity) tools before actual deployment, improving operational safety and efficiency. Beyond training applications, this virtual environment serves as a critical platform for designing, testing, and benchmarking rover functionalities and EVA procedures. Ultimately, our work contributes to optimizing human-robotic interaction, ensuring that lunar exploration missions are both effective and well-prepared before reaching the Moon.

Integrating Human-In-The-Loop AI to Tackle Space Communication Delay Challenges

Abstract
Deep space missions face significant communication delays that disrupt both operational workflows and psychological support for crew members. Unlike low Earth orbit operations, delays ranging from several minutes to nearly an hour make real-time communication with mission control infeasible, forcing crews to act with greater independence under uncertain conditions. This position paper examines how human-in-the-loop AI, digital twins, and edge AI can be integrated to mitigate these delays while maintaining astronaut autonomy and engagement. We argue that human-in-the-loop AI enables decision-making processes that are responsive to local context while remaining adaptable to changing mission demands. Digital twins offer real-time simulation and predictive modelling capabilities, allowing astronauts to explore options and troubleshoot without waiting for ground input. Edge AI brings computation closer to data sources, enabling low-latency inference onboard spacecraft for time-critical decisions. These ideas are explored through two use cases: using deepfakes to support emotionally resonant communication with loved ones, and applying visual-language models for onboard fault diagnosis and adaptive task replanning. We conclude with reflections on system design challenges under constrained and high-stakes conditions.

Toward an Earth-Independent System for EVA Mission Planning: Integrating Physical Models, Domain Knowledge, and Agentic RAG to Provide Explainable LLM-Based Decision Support

Abstract
We propose a unified framework for an Earth‑independent AI system that provides explainable, context‑aware decision support for EVA mission planning by integrating six core components: a fine‑tuned EVA domain LLM, a retrieval‑augmented knowledge base, a short-term memory store, physical simulation models, an agentic orchestration layer, and a multimodal user interface. To ground our design, we analyze the current roles and substitution potential of the Mission Control Center - identifying which procedural and analytical functions can be automated onboard while preserving human oversight for experiential and strategic tasks. Building on this framework, we introduce RASAGE (Retrieval & Simulation Augmented Guidance Agent for Exploration), a proof‑of‑concept toolset that combines Microsoft Phi‑4‑mini‑instruct with a FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search)‑powered EVA knowledge base and custom A* path planning and hypogravity metabolic models to generate grounded, traceable EVA plans. We outline a staged validation strategy to evaluate improvements in route efficiency, metabolic prediction accuracy, anomaly response effectiveness, and crew trust under realistic communication delays. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of replicating key Mission Control functions onboard, enhancing crew autonomy, reducing cognitive load, and improving safety for deep‑space exploration missions.
