Building Relational Circuits (Invited Talk)

Authors: Florent Capelli

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 365, 29th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2026)

Abstract
We review two algorithms which allow to build a factorized representation of the answers set of join queries. In a nutshell, the representation builds a circuit representing the answers set of a join query by starting from atomic relations and iteratively combine them by either constructing the Cartesian product or the disjoint union of previously computed relations. The first one can be seen as the trace of the celebrated Yannakakis algorithm, building the answer set from the inputs to the output of the circuit while the second adopts a top-down approach which can be seen as a generalization of the exhaustive DPLL algorithm, originally designed to solve the #SAT problem.

Database Theory in Action: Yannakakis' Algorithm

Authors: Paraschos Koutris, Stijn Vansummeren, Qichen Wang, Yisu Remy Wang, and Xiangyao Yu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 365, 29th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2026)

Abstract
Yannakakis' seminal algorithm is optimal for acyclic joins, yet it has not been widely adopted due to its poor performance in practice. This paper briefly surveys recent advancements in making Yannakakis' algorithm more practical, in terms of both efficiency and ease of implementation, and points out several avenues for future research.

Generalised Quantifiers Based on Rabin-Mostowski Index

Authors: Denis Kuperberg, Damian Niwiński, Paweł Parys, and Michał Skrzypczak

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
In this work we introduce new generalised quantifiers which allow us to express the Rabin-Mostowski index of automata. Our main results study expressive power and decidability of the monadic second-order (MSO) logic extended with these quantifiers. We study these problems in the realm of both ω-words and infinite trees. As it turns out, the pictures in these two cases are very different. In the case of ω-words the new quantifiers can be effectively expressed in pure MSO logic. In contrast, in the case of infinite trees, addition of these quantifiers leads to an undecidable formalism. To realise index-quantifier elimination, we consider the extension of MSO by game quantifiers. As a tool, we provide a specific quantifier-elimination procedure for them. Moreover, we introduce a novel construction of transducers realising strategies in ω-regular games with monadic parameters.

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 358, 20th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC 2025)

Abstract
Enumerative kernelization is a recent and promising area sitting at the intersection of parameterized complexity and enumeration algorithms. Its study began with the paper of Creignou et al. [Theory Comput. Syst., 2017], and development in the area has started to accelerate with the work of Golovach et al. [J. Comput. Syst. Sci., 2022]. The latter introduced polynomial-delay enumeration kernels and applied them in the study of structural parameterizations of the Matching Cut problem and some variants. Few other results, mostly on Longest Path and some generalizations of Matching Cut, have also been developed. However, little success has been seen in enumeration versions of Vertex Cover and Feedback Vertex Set, some of the most studied problems in kernelization. In this paper, we address this shortcoming. Our first result is a polynomial-delay enumeration kernel with 2k vertices for Enum Vertex Cover, where we wish to list all solutions with at most k vertices. This is obtained by developing a non-trivial lifting algorithm for the classical crown decomposition reduction rule, and directly improves upon the kernel with 𝒪(k²) vertices derived from the work of Creignou et al. Our other result is a polynomial-delay enumeration kernel with 𝒪(k³) vertices and edges for Enum Feedback Vertex Set; the proof is inspired by some ideas of Thomassé [TALG, 2010], but with a weaker bound on the kernel size due to difficulties in applying the q-expansion technique.

Separating Terms by Means of Multi Types, Coinductively

Authors: Adrienne Lancelot

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 336, 30th International Conference on Types for Proofs and Programs (TYPES 2024)

Abstract
Intersection type systems, as adequate models of the λ-calculus, induce an equational theory on terms, that we refer to as type equivalence. We give a new proof technique to coinductively characterize type equivalence. To do so, we explore a simple setting, namely weak head type equivalence, which is the equational theory induced by a weak head non-idempotent intersection type system. We prove a folklore result: weak head type equivalence coincides with Sangiorgi’s normal form bisimilarity. What is new in our development is that we only rely on coinductive program equivalences, bypassing the need to introduce term approximants, which were used in previous works characterizing type equivalence. The crucial part of this characterization is to show that type equivalent terms are normal form bisimilar: we do so by constructing shape typings that can only type terms of a specific normal form structure. Shape typings are a light form of principal types, a technique often used in intersection types to generate from one or few principal typing all possible typings of a term.

A Dichotomy Theorem for Ordinal Ranks in MSO

Authors: Damian Niwiński, Paweł Parys, and Michał Skrzypczak

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
We focus on formulae ∃X.φ(Y, X) of monadic second-order logic over the full binary tree, such that the witness X is a well-founded set. The ordinal rank rank(X) < ω₁ of such a set X measures its depth and branching structure. We search for the least upper bound for these ranks, and discover the following dichotomy depending on the formula φ. Let η_φ be the minimal ordinal such that, whenever an instance Y satisfies the formula, there is a witness X with rank(X) ≤ η_φ. Then η_φ is either strictly smaller than ω² or it reaches the maximal possible value ω₁. Moreover, it is decidable which of the cases holds. The result has potential for applications in a variety of ordinal-related problems, in particular it entails a result about the closure ordinal of a fixed-point formula.

Finite Variable Counting Logics with Restricted Requantification

Authors: Simon Raßmann, Georg Schindling, and Pascal Schweitzer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
Counting logics with a bounded number of variables form one of the central concepts in descriptive complexity theory. Although they restrict the number of variables that a formula can contain, the variables can be nested within scopes of quantified occurrences of themselves. In other words, the variables can be requantified. We study the fragments obtained from counting logics by restricting requantification for some but not necessarily all the variables. Similar to the logics without limitation on requantification, we develop tools to investigate the restricted variants. Specifically, we introduce a bijective pebble game in which certain pebbles can only be placed once and for all, and a corresponding two-parametric family of Weisfeiler-Leman algorithms. We show close correspondences between the three concepts. By using a suitable cops-and-robber game and adaptations of the Cai-Fürer-Immerman construction, we completely clarify the relative expressive power of the new logics. We show that the restriction of requantification has beneficial algorithmic implications in terms of graph identification. Indeed, we argue that with regard to space complexity, non-requantifiable variables only incur an additive polynomial factor when testing for equivalence. In contrast, for all we know, requantifiable variables incur a multiplicative linear factor. Finally, we observe that graphs of bounded tree-depth and 3-connected planar graphs can be identified using no, respectively, only a very limited number of requantifiable variables.

The Lambda Calculus Is Quantifiable

Authors: Valentin Maestracci and Paolo Pistone

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
In this paper we introduce several quantitative methods for the lambda-calculus based on partial metrics, a well-studied variant of standard metric spaces that have been used to metrize non-Hausdorff topologies, like those arising from Scott domains. First, we study quantitative variants, based on program distances, of sensible equational theories for the λ-calculus, like those arising from Böhm trees and from the contextual preorder. Then, we introduce applicative distances capturing higher-order Scott topologies, including reflexive objects like the D_∞ model. Finally, we provide a quantitative insight on the well-known connection between the Böhm tree of a λ-term and its Taylor expansion, by showing that the latter can be presented as an isometric transformation.

On Unambiguous Regular Tree Languages of Index (0,2)

Authors: Jacques Duparc, Kevin Fournier, and Szczepan Hummel

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 41, 24th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2015)

Abstract
Unambiguous automata are usually seen as a natural class of automata in-between deterministic and nondeterministic ones. We show that in case of infinite tree languages, the unambiguous ones are topologically far more complicated than the deterministic ones. We do so by providing operations that generate a family (A_{alpha})_{alpha < phi_2(0)} of unambiguous automata such that: 1. It respects the strict Wadge ordering: alpha < beta if and only if A_{alpha} <_W A_{beta}. This can be established without the help of any determinacy principle, simply by providing effective winning strategies in the underlying games. 2. Its length (phi_2(0)) is the first fixpoint of the ordinal function that itself enumerates all fixpoints of the ordinal exponentiation x |-> omega^x: an ordinal tremendously larger than (omega^(omega))^3 +3 which is the height of the Wadge hierarchy of deterministic tree languages as uncovered by Filip Murlak. 3. The priorities of all these parity automata only range from 0 to 2.

Definable Operations On Weakly Recognizable Sets of Trees

Authors: Jacques Duparc, Alessandro Facchini, and Filip Murlak

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 13, IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2011)

Abstract
Alternating automata on infinite trees induce operations on languages which do not preserve natural equivalence relations, like having the same Mostowski--Rabin index, the same Borel rank, or being continuously reducible to each other (Wadge equivalence). In order to prevent this, alternation needs to be restricted to the choice of direction in the tree. For weak alternating automata with restricted alternation a small set of computable operations generates all definable operations, which implies that the Wadge degree of a given automaton is computable. The weak index and the Borel rank coincide, and are computable. An equivalent automaton of minimal index can be computed in polynomial time (if the productive states of the automaton are given).

The Wadge Hierarchy of Max-Regular Languages

Authors: Jérémie Cabessa, Jacques Duparc, Alessandro Facchini, and Filip Murlak

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 4, IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (2009)

Abstract
Recently, Miko{\l}aj Boja{\'n}czyk introduced a class of max-regular languages, an extension of regular languages of infinite words preserving manyof its usual properties. This new class can be seen as a different way of generalising the notion of regularity from finite to infinite words. This paper compares regular and max-regular languages in terms of topological complexity. It is proved that up to Wadge equivalence the classes coincide. Moreover, when restricted to $\mathbf{\Delta}^0_2$-languages, the classes contain virtually the same languages. On the other hand, separating examples of arbitrary complexity exceeding $\mathbf{\Delta}^0_2$ are constructed.
