A Pumping-Like Lemma for Languages over Infinite Alphabets

Authors: Yoav Danieli

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
We prove a kind of a pumping lemma for languages accepted by one-register alternating finite-memory automata. As a corollary, we obtain that the set of lengths of words in such languages is semi-linear.

One-Clock Synthesis Problems

Abstract
We study a generalisation of Büchi-Landweber games to the timed setting. The winning condition is specified by a non-deterministic timed automaton, and one of the players can elapse time. We perform a systematic study of synthesis problems in all variants of timed games, depending on which player’s winning condition is specified, and which player’s strategy (or controller, a finite-memory strategy) is sought. As our main result we prove ubiquitous undecidability in all the variants, both for strategy and controller synthesis, already for winning conditions specified by one-clock automata. This strengthens and generalises previously known undecidability results. We also fully characterise those cases where finite memory is sufficient to win, namely existence of a strategy implies existence of a controller. All our results are stated in the timed setting, while analogous results hold in the data setting where one-clock automata are replaced by one-register ones.

Reachability in Vector Addition System with States Parameterized by Geometric Dimension

Authors: Yangluo Zheng

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
The geometric dimension of a vector addition system with states (VASS), emerged in Leroux and Schmitz (2019) and formalized by Fu, Yang, and Zheng (2024), quantifies the dimension of the vector space spanned by cycle effects in the system. This paper examines the VASS reachability problem through the lens of geometric dimension, revealing key differences from the traditional dimensional parameterization. Notably, we establish that the reachability problem for both geometrically 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional VASS is PSPACE-complete, achieved by extending the pumping technique initially proposed by Czerwiński et al. (2019).

Reachability in 3-VASS Is Elementary

Authors: Wojciech Czerwiński, Ismaël Jecker, Sławomir Lasota, and Łukasz Orlikowski

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
The reachability problem in 3-dimensional vector addition systems with states (3-VASS) is known to be PSpace-hard, and to belong to Tower. We significantly narrow down the complexity gap by proving the problem to be solvable in doubly-exponential space. The result follows from a new upper bound on the length of the shortest path: if there is a path between two configurations of a 3-VASS then there is also one of at most triply-exponential length. We show it by introducing a novel technique of approximating the reachability sets of 2-VASS by small semi-linear sets.

Boundedness of Cost Register Automata over the Integer Min-Plus Semiring

Authors: Andrei Draghici, Radosław Piórkowski, and Andrew Ryzhikov

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
Cost register automata (CRAs) are deterministic automata with registers taking values from a fixed semiring. A CRA computes a function from words to values from this semiring. CRAs are tightly related to well-studied weighted automata. Given a CRA, the boundedness problem asks if there exists a natural number N such that for every word, the value of the CRA on this word does not exceed N. This problem is known to be undecidable for the class of linear CRAs over the integer min-plus semiring (ℤ∪{+∞}, min, +), but very little is known about its subclasses. In this paper, we study boundedness of copyless linear CRAs with resets over the integer min-plus semiring. We show that it is decidable for such CRAs with at most two registers. More specifically, we show that it is, respectively, NL-complete and in coNP if the numbers in the input are presented in unary and binary. We also provide complexity results for two classes with an arbitrary number of registers. Namely, we show that for CRAs that use the minimum operation only in the output function, boundedness is PSPACE-complete if transferring values to other registers is allowed, and is coNP-complete otherwise. Finally, for each f_i in the hierarchy of fast-growing functions, we provide a stateless CRA with i registers whose output exceeds N only on runs longer than f_i(N). Our construction yields a non-elementary lower bound already for four registers.

Universal Quantification Makes Automatic Structures Hard to Decide

Authors: Christoph Haase and Radosław Piórkowski

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 279, 34th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2023)

Abstract
Automatic structures are structures whose universe and relations can be represented as regular languages. It follows from the standard closure properties of regular languages that the first-order theory of an automatic structure is decidable. While existential quantifiers can be eliminated in linear time by application of a homomorphism, universal quantifiers are commonly eliminated via the identity ∀x.Φ≡¬(∃x.¬Φ). If Φ is represented in the standard way as an NFA, a priori this approach results in a doubly exponential blow-up. However, the recent literature has shown that there are classes of automatic structures for which universal quantifiers can be eliminated by different means without this blow-up by treating them as first-class citizens and not resorting to double complementation. While existing lower bounds for some classes of automatic structures show that a singly exponential blow-up is unavoidable when eliminating a universal quantifier, it is not known whether there may be better approaches that avoid the naïve doubly exponential blow-up, perhaps at least in restricted settings. In this paper, we answer this question negatively and show that there is a family of NFA representing automatic relations for which the minimal NFA recognising the language after eliminating a single universal quantifier is doubly exponential, and deciding whether this language is empty is ExpSpace-complete.

New Techniques for Universality in Unambiguous Register Automata

Authors: Wojciech Czerwiński, Antoine Mottet, and Karin Quaas

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 198, 48th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2021)

Abstract
Register automata are finite automata equipped with a finite set of registers ranging over the domain of some relational structure like (ℕ; =) or (ℚ; <). Register automata process words over the domain, and along a run of the automaton, the registers can store data from the input word for later comparisons. It is long known that the universality problem, i.e., the problem to decide whether a given register automaton accepts all words over the domain, is undecidable. Recently, we proved the problem to be decidable in 2-ExpSpace if the register automaton under study is over (ℕ; =) and unambiguous, i.e., every input word has at most one accepting run; this result was shortly after improved to 2-ExpTime by Barloy and Clemente. In this paper, we go one step further and prove that the problem is in ExpSpace, and in PSpace if the number of registers is fixed. Our proof is based on new techniques that additionally allow us to show that the problem is in PSpace for single-register automata over (ℚ; <). As a third technical contribution we prove that the problem is decidable (in ExpSpace) for a more expressive model of unambiguous register automata, where the registers can take values nondeterministically, if defined over (ℕ; =) and only one register is used.

Determinisability of One-Clock Timed Automata

Authors: Lorenzo Clemente, Sławomir Lasota, and Radosław Piórkowski

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 171, 31st International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2020)

Abstract
The deterministic membership problem for timed automata asks whether the timed language recognised by a nondeterministic timed automaton can be recognised by a deterministic timed automaton. We show that the problem is decidable when the input automaton is a one-clock nondeterministic timed automaton without epsilon transitions and the number of clocks of the deterministic timed automaton is fixed. We show that the problem in all the other cases is undecidable, i.e., when either 1) the input nondeterministic timed automaton has two clocks or more, or 2) it uses epsilon transitions, or 3) the number of clocks of the output deterministic automaton is not fixed.

Timed Games and Deterministic Separability

Authors: Lorenzo Clemente, Sławomir Lasota, and Radosław Piórkowski

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 168, 47th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2020)

Abstract
We study a generalisation of Büchi-Landweber games to the timed setting. The winning condition is specified by a non-deterministic timed automaton with epsilon transitions and only Player I can elapse time. We show that for fixed number of clocks and maximal numerical constant available to Player II, it is decidable whether she has a winning timed controller using these resources. More interestingly, we also show that the problem remains decidable even when the maximal numerical constant is not specified in advance, which is an important technical novelty not present in previous literature on timed games. We complement these two decidability result by showing undecidability when the number of clocks available to Player II is not fixed. As an application of timed games, and our main motivation to study them, we show that they can be used to solve the deterministic separability problem for nondeterministic timed automata with epsilon transitions. This is a novel decision problem about timed automata which has not been studied before. We show that separability is decidable when the number of clocks of the separating automaton is fixed and the maximal constant is not. The problem whether separability is decidable without bounding the number of clocks of the separator remains an interesting open problem.

New Pumping Technique for 2-Dimensional VASS

Authors: Wojciech Czerwiński, Sławomir Lasota, Christof Löding, and Radosław Piórkowski

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 138, 44th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2019)

Abstract
We propose a new pumping technique for 2-dimensional vector addition systems with states (2-VASS) building on natural geometric properties of runs. We illustrate its applicability by reproving an exponential bound on the length of the shortest accepting run, and by proving a new pumping lemma for languages of 2-VASS. The technique is expected to be useful for settling questions concerning languages of 2-VASS, e.g., for establishing decidability status of the regular separability problem.

Reducing Transducer Equivalence to Register Automata Problems Solved by "Hilbert Method"

Abstract
In the past decades, classical results from algebra, including Hilbert's Basis Theorem, had various applications in formal languages, including a proof of the Ehrenfeucht Conjecture, decidability of HDT0L sequence equivalence, and decidability of the equivalence problem for functional tree-to-string transducers. In this paper, we study the scope of the algebraic methods mentioned above, particularily as applied to the functionality problem for register automata, and equivalence for functional register automata. We provide two results, one positive, one negative. The positive result is that functionality and equivalence are decidable for MSO transformations on unordered forests. The negative result comes from a try to extend this method to decide functionality and equivalence on macro tree transducers. We reduce macro tree transducers equivalence to an equivalence problem for some class of register automata naturally relevant to our method. We then prove this latter problem to be undecidable.
