Abstract
Given a set of n points in the plane, each colored either blue or red, we study the problem of finding a strip that separates the blue points from the red points. Specifically, we consider the following two variants: (1) locating a strip that contains no red points while maximizing the number of blue points within the strip, and (2) locating a strip that contains all blue points while minimizing the number of red points within the strip. For variant (1), we present an O(n²)-time algorithm, improving upon the previously best O(n²log n)-time result. We also show that this running time is optimal under the standard 3SUM conjecture. We also give an output-sensitive algorithm with running time O(k_{opt} n log n) that returns a strip, where k_{opt} is the number of blue points not contained within the strip in an optimal solution. We extend our results to the case of up to t parallel strips, obtaining an O(n²log n)-time algorithm. For variant (2), an optimal Θ(nlog n)-time algorithm is known for t = 1. We show 3SUM-hardness for t = 2 and give an O(n²)-time algorithm. For any t ≥ 3, we present an O(n²log n)-time algorithm.

Interactive Uniform Floodlight Illumination and Rotating Rays Voronoi Diagrams (Media Exposition)

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
Floodlight illumination problems are art-gallery variants, where a target domain needs to be illuminated by guards, each associated with a field of view. The rotating rays Voronoi diagram is a Voronoi diagram with rays as sites under the angular distance. There is a natural connection of this Voronoi structure with the problem of finding the minimum aperture such that a given set of uniform aperture floodlights illuminates a target domain. In this work we present an interactive visualization software for such problems, supporting different angular distances, namely, oriented and unoriented versions, and for different domains, namely, the plane and simple polygons.

Covering Weighted Points Using Unit Squares

Authors: Chaeyoon Chung, Jaegun Lee, and Hee-Kap Ahn

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
Given a set of n points in d-dimensional space, each assigned a positive weight, we study the problem of finding k axis-parallel unit hypercubes that maximize the total weight of the points contained in their union. In this paper, we present both exact and (1 - ε)-approximation algorithms for the case of k = 2. We present an exact algorithm that runs in O(n²) time in the plane, improving the previous O(n² log² n)-time result. This algorithm generalizes to higher dimensions and larger k in O(n^{dk/2}) time for fixed d and k. We also present a (1 - ε)-approximation algorithm that runs in O(n log min{n, 1/ε} + 1/ε³) time for k = 2 in the plane, improving the best known result. Our approximation algorithm also extends to higher dimensions.

Optimizing Wiggle in Storylines

Authors: Alexander Dobler, Tim Hegemann, Martin Nöllenburg, and Alexander Wolff

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 357, 33rd International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization (GD 2025)

Abstract
A storyline visualization shows interactions between characters over time. Each character is represented by an x-monotone curve. Time is mapped to the x-axis, and groups of characters that interact at a particular point t in time must be ordered consecutively in the y-dimension at x = t. The predominant objective in storyline optimization so far has been the minimization of crossings between (blocks of) characters. Building on this work, we investigate another important, but less studied quality criterion, namely the minimization of wiggle, i.e., the amount of vertical movement of the characters over time. Given a storyline instance together with an ordering of the characters at any point in time, we show that wiggle count minimization is NP-complete. In contrast, we provide algorithms based on mathematical programming to solve linear wiggle height minimization and quadratic wiggle height minimization efficiently. Finally, we introduce a new method for routing character curves that focuses on keeping distances between neighboring curves constant as long as they run in parallel. We have implemented our algorithms, and we conduct a case study that explores the differences between the three optimization objectives. We use existing benchmark data, but we also present a new use case for storylines, namely the visualization of rolling stock schedules in railway operation.

Illuminating the x-Axis by α-Floodlights

Authors: Bengt J. Nilsson, David Orden, Leonidas Palios, Carlos Seara, and Paweł Żyliński

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 212, 32nd International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2021)

Abstract
Given a set S of regions with piece-wise linear boundary and a positive angle α < 90°, we consider the problem of computing the locations and orientations of the minimum number of α-floodlights positioned at points in S which suffice to illuminate the entire x-axis. We show that the problem can be solved in O(n log n) time and O(n) space, where n is the number of vertices of the set S.

The Voronoi Diagram of Rotating Rays With applications to Floodlight Illumination

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 204, 29th Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2021)

Abstract
We introduce the Voronoi Diagram of Rotating Rays, a Voronoi structure where the input sites are rays, and the distance function is the counterclockwise angular distance between a point and a ray-site. This novel Voronoi diagram is motivated by illumination and coverage problems, where a domain has to be covered by floodlights (wedges) of uniform angle, and the goal is to find the minimum angle necessary to cover the domain. We study the diagram in the plane, and we present structural properties, combinatorial complexity bounds, and a construction algorithm. If the rays are induced by a convex polygon, we show how to construct the ray Voronoi diagram within this polygon in linear time. Using this information, we can find in optimal linear time the Brocard angle, the minimum angle required to illuminate a convex polygon with floodlights of uniform angle. This last algorithm improves upon previous results, settling an interesting open problem.
