Polynomial-Time Constant-Approximation for Fair Sum-Of-Radii Clustering

Abstract
In a seminal work, Chierichetti et al. [Chierichetti et al., 2017] introduced the (t,k)-fair clustering problem: Given a set of red points and a set of blue points in a metric space, a clustering is called fair if the number of red points in each cluster is at most t times and at least 1/t times the number of blue points in that cluster. The goal is to compute a fair clustering with at most k clusters that optimizes certain objective function. Considering this problem, they designed a polynomial-time O(1)- and O(t)-approximation for the k-center and the k-median objective, respectively. Recently, Carta et al. [Carta et al., 2024] studied this problem with the sum-of-radii objective and obtained a (6+ε)-approximation with running time O((k log_{1+ε}(k/ε))^k n^O(1)), i.e., fixed-parameter tractable in k. Here n is the input size. In this work, we design the first polynomial-time O(1)-approximation for (t,k)-fair clustering with the sum-of-radii objective, improving the result of Carta et al. Our result places sum-of-radii in the same group of objectives as k-center, that admit polynomial-time O(1)-approximations. This result also implies a polynomial-time O(1)-approximation for the Euclidean version of the problem, for which an f(k)⋅n^O(1)-time (1+ε)-approximation was known due to Drexler et al. [Drexler et al., 2023]. Here f is an exponential function of k. We are also able to extend our result to any arbitrary 𝓁 ≥ 2 number of colors when t = 1. This matches known results for the k-center and k-median objectives in this case. The significant disparity of sum-of-radii compared to k-center and k-median presents several complex challenges, all of which we successfully overcome in our work. Our main contribution is a novel cluster-merging-based analysis technique for sum-of-radii that helps us achieve the constant-approximation bounds.

Bootstrapping Dynamic APSP via Sparsification

Abstract
We give a simple algorithm for the dynamic approximate All-Pairs Shortest Paths (APSP) problem. Given a graph G = (V, E, l) with polynomially bounded edge lengths, our data structure processes |E| edge insertions and deletions in total time |E|^{1+o(1)} and provides query access to |E|^o(1)-approximate distances in time Õ(1) per query. We produce a data structure that mimics Thorup-Zwick distance oracles [Thorup and Zwick, 2005], but is dynamic and deterministic. Our algorithm selects a small number of pivot vertices. Then, for every other vertex, it reduces distance computation to maintaining distances to a small neighborhood around that vertex and to the nearest pivot. We maintain distances between pivots efficiently by representing them in a smaller graph and recursing. We maintain these smaller graphs by (a) reducing vertex count using the dynamic distance-preserving core graphs of Kyng-Meierhans-Probst Gutenberg [Kyng et al., 2024] in a black-box manner and (b) reducing edge-count using a dynamic spanner akin to Chen-Kyng-Liu-Meierhans-Probst Gutenberg [Chen et al., 2024]. Our dynamic spanner internally uses an APSP data structure. Choosing a large enough size reduction factor in the first step allows us to simultaneously bootstrap a spanner and a dynamic APSP data structure. Notably, our approach does not need expander graphs, an otherwise ubiquitous tool in derandomization.

Fault-Tolerant Matroid Bases

Abstract
We investigate the problem of constructing fault-tolerant bases in matroids. Given a matroid ℳ and a redundancy parameter k, a k-fault-tolerant basis is a minimum-size set of elements such that, even after the removal of any k elements, the remaining subset still spans the entire ground set. Since matroids generalize linear independence across structures such as vector spaces, graphs, and set systems, this problem unifies and extends several fault-tolerant concepts appearing in prior research. Our main contribution is a fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm for the k-fault-tolerant basis problem, parameterized by both k and the rank r of the matroid. This two-variable parameterization by k + r is shown to be tight in the following sense. On the one hand, the problem is already NP-hard for k = 1. On the other hand, it is Para-NP-hard for r ≥ 3 and polynomial-time solvable for r ≤ 2.

Minimizing Recourse in an Adaptive Balls and Bins Game

Abstract
We consider a simple load-balancing game between an algorithm and an adaptive adversary. In a simplified version of this game, the adversary observes the assignment of jobs to machines and selects a machine to kill. The algorithm must then restart the jobs from the failed machine on other machines. The adversary repeats this process, observing the new assignment and eliminating another machine, and so on. The adversary aims to force the algorithm to perform many restarts, while we seek a robust algorithm that minimizes restarts regardless of the adversary’s strategy. This game was recently introduced by Bhattacharya et al. for designing a 3-spanner with low recourse against an adaptive adversary. We prove that a simple algorithm, which assigns each job to a randomly chosen live bin, incurs O(n log n) recourse against an adaptive adversary. This enables us to construct a much simpler 3-spanner with a recourse that is smaller by a factor of O(log² n) compared to the previous construction, without increasing the update time or the size of the spanner. This motivates a careful examination of the range of attacks an adaptive adversary can deploy against simple algorithms before resorting to more complex ones. As our case study demonstrates, this attack space may not be as large as it initially appears, enabling the development of robust algorithms that are both simpler and easier to analyze.

A Simple Dynamic Spanner via APSP

Abstract
We give a simple algorithm for maintaining a n^{o(1)}-approximate spanner H of a graph G with n vertices as G receives edge updates by reduction to the dynamic All-Pairs Shortest Paths (APSP) problem. Given an initially empty graph G, our algorithm processes m insertions and n deletions in total time m^{1 + o(1)} and maintains an initially empty spanner H with total recourse n^{1 + o(1)}. When the number of insertions is much larger than the number of deletions, this notably yields recourse sub-linear in the total number of updates. Our simple algorithm can be extended to maintain a δ ≥ ω(1)-approximate spanner with n^{1+o(1)} edges throughout a sequence of m insertions and D deletions with amortized update time n^{o(1)} and total recourse n^{1 + o(1)} + n^{o(1)} ⋅ D via batching.

Simple Dynamic Spanners with Near-Optimal Recourse Against an Adaptive Adversary

Abstract
Designing dynamic algorithms against an adaptive adversary whose performance match the ones assuming an oblivious adversary is a major research program in the field of dynamic graph algorithms. One of the prominent examples whose oblivious-vs-adaptive gap remains maximally large is the fully dynamic spanner problem; there exist algorithms assuming an oblivious adversary with near-optimal size-stretch trade-off using only polylog(n) update time [Baswana, Khurana, and Sarkar TALG'12; Forster and Goranci STOC'19; Bernstein, Forster, and Henzinger SODA'20], while against an adaptive adversary, even when we allow infinite time and only count recourse (i.e. the number of edge changes per update in the maintained spanner), all previous algorithms with stretch at most log⁵(n) require at least Ω(n) amortized recourse [Ausiello, Franciosa, and Italiano ESA'05]. In this paper, we completely close this gap with respect to recourse by showing algorithms against an adaptive adversary with near-optimal size-stretch trade-off and recourse. More precisely, for any k ≥ 1, our algorithm maintains a (2k-1)-spanner of size O(n^{1+1/k}log n) with O(log n) amortized recourse, which is optimal in all parameters up to a O(log n) factor. As a step toward algorithms with small update time (not just recourse), we show another algorithm that maintains a 3-spanner of size Õ(n^{1.5}) with polylog(n) amortized recourse and simultaneously Õ(√n) worst-case update time.

Approximating k-Edge-Connected Spanning Subgraphs via a Near-Linear Time LP Solver

Abstract
In the k-edge-connected spanning subgraph (kECSS) problem, our goal is to compute a minimum-cost sub-network that is resilient against up to k link failures: Given an n-node m-edge graph with a cost function on the edges, our goal is to compute a minimum-cost k-edge-connected spanning subgraph. This NP-hard problem generalizes the minimum spanning tree problem and is the "uniform case" of a much broader class of survival network design problems (SNDP). A factor of two has remained the best approximation ratio for polynomial-time algorithms for the whole class of SNDP, even for a special case of 2ECSS. The fastest 2-approximation algorithm is however rather slow, taking O(mn k) time [Khuller, Vishkin, STOC'92]. A faster time complexity of O(n²) can be obtained, but with a higher approximation guarantee of (2k-1) [Gabow, Goemans, Williamson, IPCO'93]. Our main contribution is an algorithm that (1+ε)-approximates the optimal fractional solution in Õ(m/ε²) time (independent of k), which can be turned into a (2+ε) approximation algorithm that runs in time Õ(m/(ε²) + {k²n^{1.5}}/ε²) for (integral) kECSS; this improves the running time of the aforementioned results while keeping the approximation ratio arbitrarily close to a factor of two.
