A Model for Strategic Ridepooling and Its Integration with Line Planning

Authors: Lena Dittrich, Michael Rihlmann, Sarah Roth, and Anita Schöbel

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 137, 25th Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2025)

Abstract
Ridepooling becomes more and more popular and providing comfortable and easy-to-use transportation (nearly as taxi rides) is known to motivate passengers to use public transport. In this paper we develop a model for strategic planning of ridepooling. Here we decide in which regions ridepooling should be offered and what capacities are needed, neglecting the operational details of dial-a-ride planning. We use this model for integrating ridepooling and line planning, and analyze the integrated model theoretically and numerically. Our experiments show the potential of the approach.

Energy-Efficient Line Planning by Implementing Express Lines

Authors: Sarah Roth and Anita Schöbel

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 137, 25th Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2025)

Abstract
While a shift from individual transport to public transport reduces greenhouse gas emissions, public transport itself also consumes a non-negligible amount of energy. Acceleration processes have a high part in that, especially in urban transportation networks where stops are not far from each other. Express lines which skip stops hence use less energy than a vehicle on a normal line on the same route. Additionally, they increase the attractiveness of public transport by reducing travel times. In this paper, we introduce the express line planning problem ELP which extends the well-known line planning problem by the additional planning of express lines and which stops they skip. The problem is stated in a bicriteria setting minimizing the passengers travel time and the energy consumption of the public transport system. We investigate the problem’s complexity and develop two different MIP formulations and show their equivalence. The models are tested numerically on medium sized instances.

A Fast and Simple Algorithm for the Resource Constrained Shortest Path Problem

Authors: Saman Ahmadi, Andrea Raith, and Mahdi Jalili

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
Constrained pathfinding is a classic yet challenging network optimization problem with broad applicability across many real-world domains. The Resource-Constrained Shortest Path (RCSP) problem focuses on finding cost-optimal paths that satisfy multiple resource constraints. In this paper, we propose a novel heuristic-guided search framework that accelerates constrained search in large-scale networks, including those with negative costs and resources, by leveraging efficient queuing and pruning strategies. Experimental results on real-world benchmark maps show that our framework achieves up to two orders of magnitude speedup over state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its effectiveness in solving challenging RCSP instances within limited time.

Solving the Agile Earth Observation Satellite Scheduling Problem with CP and Local Search

Authors: Valentin Antuori, Damien T. Wojtowicz, and Emmanuel Hebrard

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 340, 31st International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP 2025)

Abstract
The increasing hunger for remote sensing data fuels a boom in satellite imagery, leading to larger agile Earth observation satellite (AEOS) constellations. Therefore, instances of the AEOS scheduling problem (AEOSSP) has become harder to solve. As most existing approaches to solve AEOSSP are designed for a single spacecraft or smaller constellations in mind, they are not tailored to the need of our industrial partner that is about to launch a constellation of 20 AEOSs. Hence, we designed a local search solver able to schedule observations and downloads at such a scale. It relies on solving a series of sub-problems as travelling salesman problem with time windows (TSPTW), first greedily, then using a CP-SAT exact solver in order to find a solution when the greedy insertion fails. Lastly, it schedules downloads and enforces memory constraints with greedy algorithms. Experiments were carried out on instances from the literature as well as generated instances from a simulator we designed. Our experiments show that using CP to solve the sub-problem significantly improve the solutions, and overall our method is slightly better than state-of-the-art approaches.

Transition Dominance in Domain-Independent Dynamic Programming

Authors: J. Christopher Beck, Ryo Kuroiwa, Jimmy H. M. Lee, Peter J. Stuckey, and Allen Z. Zhong

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 340, 31st International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP 2025)

Abstract
Domain-independent dynamic programming (DIDP) is a model-based paradigm for dynamic programming (DP) that enables users to define DP models based on a state transition system. Heuristic search-based solvers have demonstrated strong performance in solving combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper, we formally define transition dominance in DIDP, where one transition consistently leads to better solutions than another, allowing the search process to safely ignore dominated transitions. To facilitate the efficient use of transition dominance, we introduce an interface for defining transition dominance and propose the use of state functions to cache values, thereby avoiding redundant computations when verifying transition dominance. Experimental results on DP models across multiple problem classes indicate that incorporating transition dominance and state functions yields a 5 to 10 times speed-up on average for different search algorithms within the DIDP framework compared to the baseline.

Heuristics for the Traveling Repairman Problem with Profits

Authors: Thijs Dewilde, Dirk Cattrysse, Sofie Coene, Frits C. R. Spieksma, and Pieter Vansteenwegen

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 14, 10th Workshop on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS'10) (2010)

Abstract
In the traveling repairman problem with profits, a repairman (also known as the server) visits a subset of nodes in order to collect time-dependent profits. The objective consists of maximizing the total collected revenue. We restrict our study to the case of a single server with nodes located in the Euclidean plane. We investigate properties of this problem, and we derive a mathematical model assuming that the number of visited nodes is known in advance. We describe a tabu search algorithm with multiple neighborhoods, and we test its performance by running it on instances based on TSPLIB. We conclude that the tabu search algorithm finds good-quality solutions fast, even for large instances.
