Modern Datalog: Concepts, Methods, Applications (Invited Paper)

Authors: Markus Krötzsch

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 138, Joint Proceedings of the 20th and 21st Reasoning Web Summer Schools (RW 2024 & RW 2025)

Abstract
Pure Datalog is arguably the most fundamental rule language, elegant and simple, but also often too limited to be useful in practice. This has motivated the introduction of many new expressive features, ranging from datatypes and related functions, over aggregates and semi-ring generalisations, to existential quantifiers and complex terms. In spite of their variety, all these approaches remain true to the nature of Datalog as a direct, pattern-based way of computing on structured data. We therefore find that a modern notion of Datalog is emerging, distinctly different from other approaches of logic programming and with its own set of related methods and applications. In this course, we introduce Datalog and its most common extensions, and explain when and how these features can be used together (which is often, but not always, safe to do). We further look at modern Datalog systems and some of their primary use cases. Hands-on work with Datalog and its extensions is done with the free Datalog engine https://knowsys.github.io/nemo-doc/. The course is accessible to all audiences and does not assume specific prior knowledge.

Reasoning About Time in DatalogMTL: Course Notes (Invited Paper)

Authors: Przemysław Andrzej Wałęga

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 138, Joint Proceedings of the 20th and 21st Reasoning Web Summer Schools (RW 2024 & RW 2025)

Abstract
Many real-world applications, such as those in healthcare, finance, and logistics, require reasoning over temporal data. Standard rule-based languages like Datalog, however, lack explicit mechanisms for handling time and temporal dependencies. In this chapter, we discussDatalogMTL, an extension of Datalog with operators frommetric temporal logic that allow to express complex temporal properties. We focus on reasoning algorithms for DatalogMTL, discussing bothmaterialisation, based on fixpoint applications of the immediate consequence operator, and anovel saturation-based extensionthat detects and halts infinite derivations, ensuring both completeness and termination of reasoning.

The Temporal Vadalog System (Short Paper)

Authors: Luigi Bellomarini, Livia Blasi, Markus Nissl, and Emanuel Sallinger

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 355, 32nd International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2025)

Abstract
The recent resurgence of the Datalog language in the Knowledge Representation and Reasoning community has paved the way for a very promising proposal for temporal extension. DatalogMTL (Datalog with Metric Temporal Operators) is a language that offers a good trade-off between computational complexity and expressive power. However, existing implementations are still preliminary or prototypical. In this extended abstract, we give a brief overview of Temporal Vadalog, a system supporting reasoning over DatalogMTL programs built upon an engineered architecture and adopted in production scenarios in the financial setting.

On Deciding the Data Complexity of Answering Linear Monadic Datalog Queries with LTL Operators

Authors: Alessandro Artale, Anton Gnatenko, Vladislav Ryzhikov, and Michael Zakharyaschev

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 328, 28th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2025)

Abstract
Our concern is the data complexity of answering linear monadic datalog queries whose atoms in the rule bodies can be prefixed by operators of linear temporal logic LTL. We first observe that, for data complexity, answering any connected query with operators ○/○- (at the next/previous moment) is either in AC⁰, or in ACC⁰\AC⁰, or NC¹-complete, or L-hard and in NL. Then we show that the problem of deciding L-hardness of answering such queries is PSpace-complete, while checking membership in the classes AC⁰ and ACC⁰ as well as NC¹-completeness can be done in ExpSpace. Finally, we prove that membership in AC⁰ or in ACC⁰, NC¹-completeness, and L-hardness are undecidable for queries with operators ◇/◇- (sometime in the future/past) provided that NC¹ ≠ NL and L ≠ NL.

Rule-Based Temporal Reasoning: Exploring DatalogMTL (Invited Talk)

Authors: Przemysław Andrzej Wałęga

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 318, 31st International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2024)

Abstract
I will introduce DatalogMTL - an extension of Datalog, augmenting it with operators known from metric temporal logic (MTL). DatalogMTL is an expressive language which allows us for complex temporal reasoning over a dense timeline and, at the same time, remains decidable. I will provide an overview of research on DatalogMTL by discussing its computational complexity, syntactic and semantic modifications, practical reasoning approaches, applications, and future research directions.

Abstract
In the last decade, there has been a growing interest in applying AI technologies to implement complex data analytics over data streams. To this end, researchers in various fields have been organising a yearly event called the "Stream Reasoning Workshop" to share perspectives, challenges, and experiences around this topic. In this paper, the previous organisers of the workshops and other community members provide a summary of the main research results that have been discussed during the first six editions of the event. These results can be categorised into four main research areas: The first is concerned with the technological challenges related to handling large data streams. The second area aims at adapting and extending existing semantic technologies to data streams. The third and fourth areas focus on how to implement reasoning techniques, either considering deductive or inductive techniques, to extract new and valuable knowledge from the data in the stream. This summary is written not only to provide a crystallisation of the field, but also to point out distinctive traits of the stream reasoning community. Moreover, it also provides a foundation for future research by enumerating a list of use cases and open challenges, to stimulate others to join this exciting research area.

Abstract
Openly available, collaboratively edited Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are key platforms for the collective management of evolving knowledge. The present work aims t o provide an analysis of the obstacles related to investigating and processing specifically this central aspect of evolution in KGs. To this end, we discuss (i) the dimensions of evolution in KGs, (ii) the observability of evolution in existing, open, collaboratively constructed Knowledge Graphs over time, and (iii) possible metrics to analyse this evolution. We provide an overview of relevant state-of-the-art research, ranging from metrics developed for Knowledge Graphs specifically to potential methods from related fields such as network science. Additionally, we discuss technical approaches - and their current limitations - related to storing, analysing and processing large and evolving KGs in terms of handling typical KG downstream tasks.

A Modal Logic for Subject-Oriented Spatial Reasoning

Authors: Przemysław Andrzej Wałęga and Michał Zawidzki

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 147, 26th International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2019)

Abstract
We present a modal logic for representing and reasoning about space seen from the subject’s perspective. The language of our logic comprises modal operators for the relations "in front", "behind", "to the left", and "to the right" of the subject, which introduce the intrinsic frame of reference; and operators for "behind an object", "between the subject and an object", "to the left of an object", and "to the right of an object", employing the relative frame of reference. The language allows us to express nominals, hybrid operators, and a restricted form of distance operators which, as we demonstrate by example, makes the logic interesting for potential applications. We prove that the satisfiability problem in the logic is decidable and in particular PSpace-complete.

Computational Complexity of a Core Fragment of Halpern-Shoham Logic

Authors: Przemyslaw Andrzej Walega

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 120, 25th International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2018)

Abstract
Halpern-Shoham logic (HS) is a highly expressive interval temporal logic but the satisfiability problem of its formulas is undecidable. The main goal in the research area is to introduce fragments of the logic which are of low computational complexity and of expressive power high enough for practical applications. Recently introduced syntactical restrictions imposed on formulas and semantical constraints put on models gave rise to tractable HS fragments for which prototypical real-world applications have already been proposed. One of such fragments is obtained by forbidding diamond modal operators and limiting formulas to the core form, i.e., the Horn form with at most one literal in the antecedent. The fragment was known to be NL-hard and in P but no tight results were known. In the paper we prove its P-completeness in the case where punctual intervals are allowed and the timeline is dense. Importantly, the fragment is not referential, i.e., it does not allow us to express nominals (which label intervals) and satisfaction operators (which enables us to refer to intervals by their labels). We show that by adding nominals and satisfaction operators to the fragment we reach NP-completeness whenever the timeline is dense or the interpretation of modal operators is weakened (excluding the case when punctual intervals are disallowed and the timeline is discrete). Moreover, we prove that in the case of language containing nominals but not satisfaction operators, the fragment is still NP-complete over dense timelines.

Abstract
Abstract: Halpern and Shoham's modal logic of time intervals (HS in short) is an elegant and highly influential propositional interval-based logic. Its Horn fragments and their hybrid extensions have been recently intensively studied and successfully applied in real-world use cases. Detailed investigation of their decidability and computational complexity has been conducted, however, there has been significantly less research on their expressive power. In this paper we make a step towards filling this gap. We (1) show what time structures are definable in the language of HS, and (2) determine which HS fragments are capable of expressing: hybrid machinery, i.e., nominals and satisfaction operators, and somewhere, difference, and everywhere modal operators. These results enable us to classify HS Horn fragments according to their expressive power and to gain insight in the interplay between their decidability/computational complexity and expressiveness.
