Single-Criteria Metric r-Dominating Set Problem via Minor-Preserving Support

Abstract
Given an unweighted graph G, the minimum r-dominating set problem asks for a subset of vertices S of the smallest cardinality, such that every vertex in G is within radius r to some vertex in S. While the r-dominating set problem on planar graph admits PTAS from Baker’s shifting/layering technique when r is a constant, the problem becomes significantly harder when r can depend on n. In fact, under Exponential-Time Hypothesis, Fox-Epstein ηl [SODA 2019] observed that no efficient PTAS can exist for the unbounded r-dominating set problem on planar graphs. One may consider even harder weighted-variant known as the vertex-weighted metric r-dominating set, where edges are associated with lengths, and every vertex is associated with a positive-valued weight, and the goal is to compute an r-dominating set with minimum total weight. As a result, people resorted to bicriteria algorithms by allowing the returned solution to use radius-(1+ε)r balls instead, in addition to the total weight being a 1+ε approximation to the optimal value. We establish the first single-criteria polynomial-time O(1)-approximation algorithm for the vertex-weighted metric r-dominating set problem on planar graphs when r is part of the input, and can be arbitrarily large compared to n. Our new (single-criteria) O(1)-approximation algorithm uses the quasi-uniformity sampling technique of Chan et al. [SODA 2012] by bounding the shallow cell complexity of the (unbounded) radius-r ball system to be linear in n. To this end we have two technical innovations: 1) The discrete ball system on planar graphs are neither pseudodisks nor have well-defined boundaries for standard union-complexity arguments. We construct a support graph for arbitrary distance ball systems as contractions of Voronoi cells; the sparseness comes as a byproduct. 2) We present an assignment of each depth-(≥3) cell to a unique 3-tuple of ball centers. This allows us to use standard Clarkson-Shor techniques to reduce the counting to cells of depth exactly 3, which we prove to be size O(n) by a novel geometric argument based on our support being a Voronoi contraction.

Separators for Intersection Graphs of Spheres

Authors: Jacob Fox and Jonathan Tidor

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
We prove the existence of optimal separators for intersection graphs of balls and spheres in any dimension d. One of our results is that if an intersection graph of n spheres in ℝ^d has m edges, then it contains a balanced separator of size O_d(m^{1/d}n^{1-2/d}). This bound is best possible in terms of the parameters involved. The same result holds if the balls and spheres are replaced by fat convex bodies and their boundaries.

Product Structure and Treewidth of Hyperbolic Uniform Disk Graphs

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
Hyperbolic uniform disk graphs (HUDGs) are intersection graphs of disks with some radius r in the hyperbolic plane, where r may be constant or depend on the number of vertices in a family of HUDGs. We show that HUDGs with constant clique number do not admit product structure, i.e., that there is no constant c such that every such graph is a subgraph of H ⊠ P for some graph H of treewidth at most c. This justifies that HUDGs are described as not having a grid-like structure in the literature, and is in contrast to unit disk graphs in the Euclidean plane, whose grid-like structure is evident from the fact that they are subgraphs of the strong product of two paths and a clique of constant size [Dvořák et al., '21, MATRIX Annals]. By allowing H to be any graph of constant treewidth instead of a path-like graph, we reject the possibility of a grid-like structure not merely by the maximum degree (which is unbounded for HUDGs) but due to their global structure. We complement this by showing that for every (sub-)constant r, HUDGs admit product structure, whereas the typical hyperbolic behavior is observed if r grows with the number of vertices. Our proof involves a family of n-vertex HUDGs with radius log n that has bounded clique number but unbounded treewidth, and one for which the ratio of treewidth and clique number is log n / log log n. Up to a log log n factor, this negatively answers a question raised by Bläsius et al. [SoCG '25] asking whether balanced separators of HUDGs with radius log n can be covered by less than log n cliques. Our results also imply that the local and layered tree-independence number of HUDGs are both unbounded, answering an open question of Dallard et al. [arXiv '25].

Homomorphism Indistinguishability, Multiplicity Automata Equivalence, and Polynomial Identity Testing

Authors: Marek Černý and Tim Seppelt

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
Two graphs G and H are homomorphism indistinguishable over a graph class ℱ if they admit the same number of homomorphisms from every graph F ∈ ℱ. Many graph isomorphism relaxations such as (quantum) isomorphism and cospectrality can be characterised as homomorphism indistinguishability over specific graph classes. Thereby, the problems HomInd(ℱ) of deciding homomorphism indistinguishability over ℱ subsume diverse graph isomorphism relaxations whose complexities range from logspace to undecidable. Establishing the first general result on the complexity of HomInd(ℱ), Seppelt (MFCS 2024) showed that HomInd(ℱ) is in randomised polynomial time for every graph class ℱ of bounded treewidth that can be defined in counting monadic second-order logic CMSO₂. We show that this algorithm is conditionally optimal, i.e. it cannot be derandomised unless polynomial identity testing is in P. For CMSO₂-definable graph classes ℱ of bounded pathwidth, we improve the previous complexity upper bound for HomInd(ℱ) from P to C_ = L and show that this is tight. Secondarily, we establish a connection between homomorphism indistinguishability and multiplicity automata equivalence which allows us to pinpoint the complexity of the latter problem as C_ = L-complete.

Weakly-Sparse and Strongly Flip-Flat Classes of Graphs Are Uniformly Almost-Wide

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
In this work we take a step towards characterising strongly flip-flat classes of graphs. Strong flip-flatness appears to be the analogue of uniform almost-wideness in the setting of dense classes of graphs. We prove that strongly flip-flat classes of graphs that are weakly sparse are indeed uniformly almost-wide.

Vanishing Signatures, Orbit Closure, and the Converse of the Holant Theorem

Authors: Jin-Yi Cai and Ben Young

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
Valiant’s Holant theorem is a powerful tool for algorithms and reductions for counting problems. It states that if two sets ℱ and 𝒢 of tensors (a.k.a. constraint functions or signatures) are related by a holographic transformation, then ℱ and 𝒢 are Holant-indistinguishable, i.e., every tensor network using tensors from ℱ, respectively from 𝒢, contracts to the same value. Xia (ICALP 2010) conjectured the converse of the Holant theorem, but a counterexample was found based on vanishing signatures, those which are Holant-indistinguishable from 0. We prove two near-converses of the Holant theorem using techniques from invariant theory. (I) Holant-indistinguishable ℱ and 𝒢 always admit two sequences of holographic transformations mapping them arbitrarily close to each other, i.e., their GL_q-orbit closures intersect. (II) We show that vanishing signatures are the only true obstacle to a converse of the Holant theorem. As corollaries of the two theorems we obtain the first characterization of homomorphism-indistinguishability over graphs of bounded degree, a long standing open problem, and show that two graphs with invertible adjacency matrices are isomorphic if and only if they are homomorphism-indistinguishable over graphs with maximum degree at most three. We also show that Holant-indistinguishability is complete for a complexity class TOCI introduced by Lysikov and Walter [Vladimir Lysikov and Michael Walter, 2024], and hence hard for graph isomorphism.

Symmetric Algebraic Circuits and Homomorphism Polynomials

Authors: Anuj Dawar, Benedikt Pago, and Tim Seppelt

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
The central open question of algebraic complexity is whether VP ≠ VNP, which is saying that the permanent cannot be represented by families of polynomial-size algebraic circuits. For symmetric algebraic circuits, this has been confirmed by Dawar and Wilsenach (2020), who showed exponential lower bounds on the size of symmetric circuits for the permanent. In this work, we set out to develop a more general symmetric algebraic complexity theory. Our main result is that a family of symmetric polynomials admits small symmetric circuits if and only if they can be written as a linear combination of homomorphism counting polynomials of graphs of bounded treewidth. We also establish a relationship between the symmetric complexity of subgraph counting polynomials and the vertex cover number of the pattern graph. As a concrete example, we examine the symmetric complexity of immanant families (a generalisation of the determinant and permanent) and show that a known conditional dichotomy due to Curticapean (2021) holds unconditionally in the symmetric setting.

Star-Based Separators for Intersection Graphs of c-Colored Pseudo-Segments

Authors: Mark de Berg, Bart M. P. Jansen, and Jeroen S. K. Lamme

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
The Planar Separator Theorem, which states that any planar graph 𝒢 has a separator consisting of O(√n) nodes whose removal partitions 𝒢 into components of size at most 2n/3, is a widely used tool to obtain fast algorithms on planar graphs. Intersection graphs of disks, which generalize planar graphs, do not admit such separators. It has recently been shown that disk graphs do admit so-called clique-based separators that consist of O(√n) cliques. This result has been generalized to intersection graphs of various other types of disk-like objects. Unfortunately, segment intersection graphs do not admit small clique-based separators, because they can contain arbitrarily large bicliques. This is true even in the simple case of axis-aligned segments. In this paper we therefore introduce biclique-based separators (and, in particular, star-based separators), which are separators consisting of a small number of bicliques (or stars). We prove that any c-oriented set of n segments in the plane, where c is a constant, admits a star-based separator consisting of O(√n) stars. In fact, our result is more general, as it applies to any set of n pseudo-segments that is partitioned into c subsets such that the pseudo-segments in the same subset are pairwise disjoint. We extend our result to intersection graphs of c-oriented polygons. These results immediately lead to an almost-exact distance oracle for such intersection graphs, which has O(n√n) storage and O(√n) query time, and that can report the hop-distance between any two query nodes in the intersection graph with an additive error of at most 2. This is the first distance oracle for such types of intersection graphs that has subquadratic storage and sublinear query time and that only has an additive error.

Treewidth of Outer k-Planar Graphs

Authors: Rafał Pyzik

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 357, 33rd International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization (GD 2025)

Abstract
Treewidth is an important structural graph parameter that quantifies how closely a graph resembles a tree-like structure. It has applications in many algorithmic and combinatorial problems. In this paper, we study the treewidth of outer k-planar graphs, that is, graphs admitting a convex drawing (a straight-line drawing where all vertices lie on a circle) in which every edge crosses at most k other edges. We also consider the more general class of outer min-k-planar graphs, which are graphs admitting a convex drawing where for every crossing of two edges at least one of these edges is crossed at most k times. Firman, Gutowski, Kryven, Okada and Wolff [GD 2024] proved that every outer k-planar graph has treewidth at most 1.5k+2 and provided a lower bound of k+2 for even k. We establish a lower bound of 1.5k+0.5 for every odd k. Additionally, they showed that every outer min-k-planar graph has treewidth at most 3k+1. We improve this upper bound to 3⋅⌊k/2⌋+4. Our approach also allows us to upper bound the separation number, a parameter closely related to treewidth, of outer min-k-planar graphs by 2⋅⌊k/2⌋+4. This improves upon the previous bound of 2k+1 and achieves a bound with an optimal multiplicative constant.

An Improved Bound for Plane Covering Paths

Abstract
A covering path for a finite set P of points in the plane is a polygonal path such that every point of P lies on a segment of the path. The vertices of the path need not be at points of P. A covering path is plane if its segments do not cross each other. Let π(n) be the minimum number such that every set of n points in the plane admits a plane covering path with at most π(n) segments. We prove that π(n) ≤ ⌈6n/7⌉. This improves the previous best-known upper bound of ⌈21n/22⌉, due to Biniaz (SoCG 2023). Our proof is constructive and yields a simple O(n log n)-time algorithm for computing a plane covering path.

Monitoring the Structural Health of Space Habitats Through Immersive Data Art Visualization

Abstract
As humanity advances toward long-term space habitation, traditional SHM systems - reliant on abstract data representations - struggle to support rapid decision-making in extreme environments. This study addresses this critical gap by introducing an engineering-art-human factors framework that transforms SHM through immersive data-art visualization. By integrating sensor networks and machine learning, structural data (stress, vibration, deformation) is converted into intuitive visual languages: dynamic color gradients and biomimetic morphologies leverage perceptual laws (e.g., Weber-Fechner) to amplify critical signals. Multimodal interfaces (AR, haptic feedback) and natural elements mitigate cognitive load and psychological stress in confined habitats. Our contribution lies in redefining SHM as a synergy of precision and intuition, enabling "at-a-glance" assessments while balancing functionality and human-centric design. The urgency of this research stems from the inadequacy of conventional systems in extreme space conditions and the growing demand for astronaut safety and operational efficiency. This framework not only pioneers a sustainable monitoring paradigm for space habitats but also extends to terrestrial high-risk infrastructure, demonstrating the necessity of interdisciplinary innovation in extreme environments.

Color Refinement for Relational Structures

Authors: Benjamin Scheidt and Nicole Schweikardt

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
Color Refinement, also known as Naive Vertex Classification, is a classical method to distinguish graphs by iteratively computing a coloring of their vertices. While it is traditionally used as an imperfect way to test for isomorphism, the algorithm has permeated many other, seemingly unrelated, areas of computer science. The method is algorithmically simple, and it has a well-understood distinguishing power: it has been logically characterized by Immerman and Lander (1990) and Cai, Fürer, Immerman (1992), who showed that it distinguishes precisely those graphs that can be distinguished by a sentence of first-order logic with counting quantifiers and only two variables. A combinatorial characterization was given by Dvořák (2010), who showed that it distinguishes precisely those graphs that differ in the number of homomorphisms from some tree. In this paper, we introduce Relational Color Refinement (RCR, for short), a generalization of the Color Refinement method from graphs to arbitrary relational structures, whose distinguishing power admits the equivalent combinatorial and logical characterizations as Color Refinement has on graphs: we show that RCR distinguishes precisely those structures that differ in the number of homomorphisms from an acyclic connected relational structure. Further, we show that RCR distinguishes precisely those structures that are distinguished by a sentence of the guarded fragment of first-order logic with counting quantifiers. Additionally, we show that for every fixed finite relational signature, RCR can be implemented to run on structures of that signature in time O(N⋅log N), where N denotes the number of tuples present in the structure.

Homomorphism Indistinguishability and Game Comonads for Restricted Conjunction and Requantification

Authors: Georg Schindling

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
The notion of homomorphism indistinguishability offers a combinatorial framework for characterizing equivalence relations of graphs, in particular equivalences in counting logics within finite model theory. That is, for certain graph classes, two structures agree on all homomorphism counts from the class if and only if they satisfy the same sentences in a corresponding logic. This perspective often reveals connections between the combinatorial properties of graph classes and the syntactic structure of logical fragments. In this work, we extend this perspective to logics with restricted requantification, refining the stratification of logical resources in finite-variable counting logics. Specifically, we generalize Lovász-type theorems for these logics with either restricted conjunction or bounded quantifier-rank and present new combinatorial proofs of existing results. To this end, we introduce novel path and tree decompositions that incorporate the concept of reusability and develop characterizations based on pursuit-evasion games. Leveraging this framework, we establish that classes of bounded pathwidth and treewidth with reusability constraints are homomorphism distinguishing closed. Finally, we develop a comonadic perspective on requantification by constructing new comonads that encapsulate restricted-reusability pebble games. We show a tight correspondence between their coalgebras and path/tree decompositions, yielding categorical characterizations of reusability in graph decompositions. This unifies logical, combinatorial, and categorical perspectives on the notion of reusability.

Adaptive Query Algorithms for Relational Structures Based on Homomorphism Counts

Authors: Balder ten Cate, Phokion G. Kolaitis, and Arnar Á. Kristjánsson

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
A query algorithm based on homomorphism counts is a procedure to decide membership for a class of finite relational structures using only homomorphism count queries. A left query algorithm can ask the number of homomorphisms from any structure to the input structure and a right query algorithm can ask the number of homomorphisms from the input structure to any other structure. We systematically compare the expressive power of different types of left or right query algorithms, including non-adaptive query algorithms, adaptive query algorithms that can ask a bounded number of queries, and adaptive query algorithms that can ask an unbounded number of queries. We also consider query algorithms where the homomorphism counting is done over the Boolean semiring 𝔹, meaning that only the existence of a homomorphism is recorded, not the precise number of them.

Robust Contraction Decomposition for Minor-Free Graphs and Its Applications

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We prove a robust contraction decomposition theorem for H-minor-free graphs, which states that given an H-minor-free graph G and an integer p, one can partition in polynomial time the vertices of G into p sets Z₁,… ,Z_p such that tw(G/(Z_i ⧵ Z')) = O(p + |Z'|) for all i ∈ [p] and Z' ⊆ Z_i. Here, tw(⋅) denotes the treewidth of a graph and G/(Z_i ⧵ Z') denotes the graph obtained from G by contracting all edges with both endpoints in Z_i ⧵ Z'. Our result generalizes earlier results by Klein [SICOMP 2008] and Demaine et al. [STOC 2011] based on partitioning E(G), and some recent theorems for planar graphs by Marx et al. [SODA 2022], for bounded-genus graphs (more generally, almost-embeddable graphs) by Bandyapadhyay et al. [SODA 2022], and for unit-disk graphs by Bandyapadhyay et al. [SoCG 2022]. The robust contraction decomposition theorem directly results in parameterized algorithms with running time 2^{Õ(√k)} ⋅ n^{O(1)} or n^{O(√k)} for every vertex/edge deletion problems on H-minor-free graphs that can be formulated as Permutation CSP Deletion or 2-Conn Permutation CSP Deletion. Consequently, we obtain the first subexponential-time parameterized algorithms for Subset Feedback Vertex Set, Subset Odd Cycle Transversal, Subset Group Feedback Vertex Set, 2-Conn Component Order Connectivity on H-minor-free graphs. For other problems which already have subexponential-time parameterized algorithms on H-minor-free graphs (e.g., Odd Cycle Transversal, Vertex Multiway Cut, Vertex Multicut, etc.), our theorem gives much simpler algorithms of the same running time.
