Parameterized Algorithms for Computing Pareto Sets

Abstract
The problem of computing the set of Pareto-optimal solutions has been studied for a variety of multiobjective optimization problems. For many such problems, algorithms are known that compute the Pareto set in (weak) output-polynomial time. These algorithms are often based on dynamic programming and by weak output-polynomial time, we mean that the running time depends polynomially on the size of the Pareto set but also on the sizes of the Pareto sets of the subproblems that occur in the dynamic program. For some problems, like the multiobjective minimum spanning tree problem, such algorithms are not known to exist and for other problems, like multiobjective versions of many NP-hard problems, such algorithms cannot exist, unless 𝒫 = 𝒩𝒫. Dynamic programming over tree decompositions is a common technique in parameterized algorithms. In this paper, we study whether this technique can also be applied to compute Pareto sets of multiobjective optimization problems. We first derive an algorithm to compute the Pareto set for the multicriteria s-t cut problem and show how this result can be applied to a polygon aggregation problem arising in cartography that has recently been introduced by Rottmann et al. (GIScience 2021). We also show how to apply these techniques to also compute the Pareto set of the multiobjective minimum spanning tree problem and for the multiobjective TSP. The running time of our algorithms is O(f(w)⋅poly(n,p_{max})), where f is some function in the treewidth w, n is the input size, and p_{max} is an upper bound on the size of the Pareto sets of the subproblems that occur in the dynamic program. Finally, we present an experimental evaluation of computing Pareto sets on real-world instances of polygon aggregation problems. For this matter we devised a task-specific data structure that allows for efficient storage and modification of large sets of Pareto-optimal solutions. Throughout the implementation process, we incorporated several improved strategies and heuristics that significantly reduced both runtime and memory usage, enabling us to solve instances with treewidth of up to 22 within reasonable amount of time. Moreover, we conducted a preprocessing study to compare different tree decompositions in terms of their estimated overall runtime.

Revisiting Directed Disjoint Paths on Tournaments (And Relatives)

Abstract
In the Directed Disjoint Paths problem (k-DDP), we are given a digraph and k pairs of terminals, and the goal is to find k pairwise vertex-disjoint paths connecting each pair of terminals. Bang-Jensen and Thomassen [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 1992] claimed that k-DDP is NP-complete on tournaments, and this result triggered a very active line of research about the complexity of the problem on tournaments and natural superclasses. We identify a flaw in their proof, which has been acknowledged by the authors, and provide a new NP-completeness proof. From an algorithmic point of view, Fomin and Pilipczuk [J. Comb. Theory B 2019] provided an FPT algorithm for the edge-disjoint version of the problem on semicomplete digraphs, and showed that their technique cannot work for the vertex-disjoint version. We overcome this obstacle by showing that the version of k-DDP where we allow congestion c on the vertices is FPT on semicomplete digraphs provided that c is greater than k/2. This is based on a quite elaborate irrelevant vertex argument inspired by the edge-disjoint version, and we show that our choice of c is best possible for this technique, with a counterexample with no irrelevant vertices when c ≤ k/2. We also prove that k-DDP on digraphs that can be partitioned into h semicomplete digraphs is W[1]-hard parameterized by k+h, which shows that the XP algorithm presented by Chudnovsky, Scott, and Seymour [J. Comb. Theory B 2019] is essentially optimal.

Reliability and Delay Distributions of Train Connections

Abstract
Finding reliable train connections is a considerable issue in timetable information since train delays perturb the timetable daily. We present an effective probabilistic approach for estimating the reliability of connections in a large train network. Experiments on real customer queries and real timetables for all trains in Germany show that our approach can be implemented to deliver good results at the expense of only little processing time. Based on probability distributions for train events in connections, we estimate the reliability of connections. We have analyzed our computed reliability ratings by validating our predictions against real delay data from German Railways. This study shows that we are able to predict the feasibility of connections very well. In essence, our predictions are slightly optimistic for connections with a high rating and pretty accurate for connections with a medium rating. Only for the rare cases of a very low rating, we are too pessimistic. Our probabilistic approach already delivers good results, still has improvement potential, and offers a new perspective in the search for more reliable connections in order to bring passengers safely to their destinations even in case of delays.
