Improving the SMT Proof Reconstruction Pipeline in Isabelle/HOL

Abstract
Sledgehammer is a tool that increases the level of automation in the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant by asking external automatic theorem provers (ATPs), including SMT solvers, to prove the current goal. When the external ATP succeeds it must provide enough evidence that the goal holds for Isabelle to be able to reprove it internally based on that evidence. In particular, Isabelle can do this by replaying fine-grained proof certificates from proof-producing SMT solvers as long as they are expressed in the Alethe format, which until now was supported only by the veriT SMT solver. We report on our experience adding proof reconstruction support for the cvc5 SMT solver in Isabelle by extending cvc5 to produce proofs in the Alethe format and then adapting Isabelle to reconstruct those proofs. We discuss several difficulties and pitfalls we encountered and describe a set of tools and techniques we developed to improve the process. A notable outcome of this effort is that Isabelle can now be used as an independent proof checker for SMT problems written in the SMT-LIB standard. We evaluate cvc5’s integration on a set of SMT-LIB benchmarks originating from Isabelle as well as on a set of Isabelle proofs. Our results confirm that this integration complements and improves Sledgehammer’s capabilities.

Sledgehammering Without ATPs (Short Paper)

Abstract
We describe an alternative architecture for "hammers," inspired by Magnushammer, in which proofs are found by the proof assistant’s built-in automation instead of by external automatic theorem provers (ATPs). We implemented this approach in Isabelle’s Sledgehammer and evaluated it. The new ATP-free approach nicely complements the traditional Sledgehammer. The two approaches in combination solve more goals than the traditional ATP-based approach alone.

A Research Framework to Develop a Real-Time Synchrony Index to Monitor Team Cohesion and Performance in Long-Duration Space Exploration

Abstract
As humanity prepares for long-distance space exploration, optimizing group performance, the ability of a group to achieve its goals efficiently, is critical. Astronaut crews will endure isolation, confinement, and operational stress, making group synchrony - the alignment of behaviors, emotions, and physiological states - a key factor in mission success. Synchrony influences team cohesion, performance, and resilience, necessitating effective crew management strategies. This paper proposes a framework for a real-time, unobtrusive index of group synchrony to support astronauts and mission control. Research indicates that team cohesion fluctuates in isolated environments, with reduced communication and interpersonal conflicts emerging over time. A system tracking synchrony could mitigate these issues, providing proactive support and improving remote management. Additionally, it could serve as a cognitive and physiological feedback tool for astronauts and a decision-making aid for mission control, enhancing well-being and efficiency. Our approach integrates behavioral and physiological synchrony measures to assess team cohesion and performance. We propose a multi-modal synchrony index combining movement coordination, communication patterns, and physiological signals such as heart rate, electrodermal activity, and EEG. This index will be validated across different tasks to ensure applicability across diverse mission scenarios. By developing a robust synchrony index, we address a fundamental challenge in space missions: sustaining team effectiveness under extreme conditions. Beyond space exploration, our findings could benefit high-risk, high-isolation teams in submarine crews, polar expeditions, and remote research groups. Our collaboration with the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, the Institut de Médecine et de Physiologie Spatiales, and the Toulouse University Hospital marks the first step, with experimental data collection starting this year. Ultimately, this research fosters more adaptive, responsive, and resilient teams for future space missions.

Monitoring the Structural Health of Space Habitats Through Immersive Data Art Visualization

Abstract
As humanity advances toward long-term space habitation, traditional SHM systems - reliant on abstract data representations - struggle to support rapid decision-making in extreme environments. This study addresses this critical gap by introducing an engineering-art-human factors framework that transforms SHM through immersive data-art visualization. By integrating sensor networks and machine learning, structural data (stress, vibration, deformation) is converted into intuitive visual languages: dynamic color gradients and biomimetic morphologies leverage perceptual laws (e.g., Weber-Fechner) to amplify critical signals. Multimodal interfaces (AR, haptic feedback) and natural elements mitigate cognitive load and psychological stress in confined habitats. Our contribution lies in redefining SHM as a synergy of precision and intuition, enabling "at-a-glance" assessments while balancing functionality and human-centric design. The urgency of this research stems from the inadequacy of conventional systems in extreme space conditions and the growing demand for astronaut safety and operational efficiency. This framework not only pioneers a sustainable monitoring paradigm for space habitats but also extends to terrestrial high-risk infrastructure, demonstrating the necessity of interdisciplinary innovation in extreme environments.

Bit-Precise Reasoning with Parametric Bit-Vectors

Abstract
The SMT-LIB theory of bit-vectors is restricted to bit-vectors of fixed width. However, several important applications can benefit from reasoning about bit-vectors of symbolic widths, i.e., parametric bit-vectors. Recent work has introduced an approach for solving formulas over parametric bit-vectors, via an eager translation to quantified integer arithmetic with uninterpreted functions. The approach was shown to be successful for several applications, including the bit-width independent verification of compiler optimizations, invertibility conditions, and rewrite rules. We extend and improve that approach in several aspects. Theoretically, we improve expressiveness by defining a new theory of parametric bit-vectors that supports more operators and allows reasoning about the bit-widths themselves. Algorithmically, we introduce a lazy algorithm that avoids the use of uninterpreted functions and quantified axioms for them. Empirically, we show a significant improvement by implementing and evaluating our approach, and comparing it experimentally to the previous one.

Real-Time System Evaluation Techniques: A Systematic Mapping Study

Abstract
A systematic mapping study assesses a broad selection of research publications with the aim of categorizing them according to a research question. We present the first systematic mapping study on evaluation practices within the field of real-time systems, by analyzing publications from the top three conferences ECRTS, RTAS, and RTSS from 2017 until 2024. Our study provides a comprehensive view on the evaluation practices prevalent in our community, including benchmark software, task set and graph generators, case studies, industrial challenges, and custom solutions. Based on our study, we construct and publish a dataset enabling quantitative analysis of evaluation practices within the real-time systems community. Our analysis indicates shortcomings in current practice: custom case studies are abundant, while industrial challenges have very minor impact. Reproducibility has only been shown for a small subset of evaluations and there is no indication of change. Adoption of new and improved tools and benchmarks is very slow or even non-existent. Evaluation must not be viewed as an obligation when publishing a paper, but as a key element in ensuring practicability, comparability, and reproducibility. Based on our study, we conclude that our community currently falls short on these objectives.

Whelk: An OWL EL+RL Reasoner Enabling New Use Cases

Abstract
Many tasks in the biosciences rely on reasoning with large OWL terminologies (Tboxes), often combined with even larger databases. In particular, a common task is retrieval queries that utilize relational expressions; for example, “find all genes expressed in the brain or any part of the brain”. Automated reasoning on these ontologies typically relies on scalable reasoners targeting the EL subset of OWL, such as ELK. While the introduction of ELK has been transformative in the incorporation of reasoning into bio-ontology quality control and production pipelines, we have encountered limitations when applying it to use cases involving high throughput query answering or reasoning about datasets describing instances (Aboxes). Whelk is a fast OWL reasoner for combined EL+RL reasoning. As such, it is particularly useful for many biological ontology tasks, particularly those characterized by large Tboxes using the EL subset of OWL, combined with Aboxes targeting the RL subset of OWL. Whelk is implemented in Scala and utilizes immutable functional data structures, which provides advantages when performing incremental or dynamic reasoning tasks. Whelk supports querying complex class expressions at a substantially greater rate than ELK, and can answer queries or perform incremental reasoning tasks in parallel, enabling novel applications of OWL reasoning.

Autonomy in the Age of Knowledge Graphs: Vision and Challenges

Abstract
In this position paper, we propose that Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are one of the prime approaches to support the programming of autonomous software systems at the knowledge level. From this viewpoint, we survey how KGs can support different dimensions of autonomy in such systems: For example, the autonomy of systems with respect to their environment, or with respect to organisations; and we discuss related practical and research challenges. We emphasise that KGs need to be able to support systems of autonomous software agents that are themselves highly heterogeneous, which limits how these systems may use KGs. Furthermore, these heterogeneous software agents may populate highly dynamic environments, which implies that they require adaptive KGs. The scale of the envisioned systems - possibly stretching to the size of the Internet - highlights the maintainability of the underlying KGs that need to contain large-scale knowledge, which requires that KGs are maintained jointly by humans and machines. Furthermore, autonomous agents require procedural knowledge, and KGs should hence be explored more towards the provisioning of such knowledge to augment autonomous behaviour. Finally, we highlight the importance of modelling choices, including with respect to the selected abstraction level when modelling and with respect to the provisioning of more expressive constraint languages.

Most CNN architectures do not run in real-time due to the high number of computational operations involved during the inference phase. This emphasizes the role of CNN optimization techniques in early design space exploration. To estimate their efficacy in satisfying the target constraints, existing techniques are either hardware (HW) agnostic, pseudo-HW-aware by considering parameter and operation counts, or HW-aware through inflexible hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setups. In this work, we introduce HW-Flow, a framework for optimizing and exploring CNN models based on three levels of hardware abstraction: Coarse, Mid and Fine. Through these levels, CNN design and optimization can be iteratively refined towards efficient execution on the target hardware platform. We present HW-Flow in the context of CNN pruning by augmenting a reinforcement learning agent with key metrics to understand the influence of its pruning actions on the inference hardware. With 2× reduction in energy and latency, we prune ResNet56, ResNet50, and DeepLabv3 with minimal accuracy degradation on the CIFAR-10, ImageNet, and CityScapes datasets, respectively.

Using Answer Set Programming in the Development of Verified Software

Abstract
Software forms a key component of many modern safety and security critical systems. One approach to achieving the required levels of assurance is to prove that the software is free from bugs and meets its specification. If a proof cannot be constructed it is important to identify the root cause as it may be a flaw in the specification or a bug. Novice users often find this process frustrating and discouraging, and it can be time-consuming for experienced users. The paper describes a commercial application based on Answer Set Programming called Riposte. It generates simple counter-examples for false and unprovable verification conditions (VCs). These help users to understand why problematic VC are false and makes the development of verified software easier and faster.
