Abstract
We consider a fast approximation algorithm for the linear matroid intersection problem. In this problem, we are given two r × n matrices M₁ and M₂, and the objective is to find a largest set of columns that are linearly independent in both M₁ and M₂. We design a (1 - ε)-approximation algorithm with time complexity Õ_{ε}(nnz(M₁) + nnz(M₂) + r_{*}^{ω}), where nnz(M_i) denotes the number of nonzero entries in M_i for i = 1, 2, r_{*} denotes the maximum size of a common independent set, and ω < 2.372 denotes the matrix multiplication exponent. Our approximation algorithm is faster than the exact algorithm by Harvey [FOCS'06 & SICOMP'09] and Cheung-Kwok-Lau [STOC'12 & JACM'13], which runs in Õ(nnz(M₁) + nnz(M₂) + n r_{*}^{ω - 1}) time. We also develop a fast (1 - ε)-approximation algorithm for the weighted version of the linear matroid intersection problem. In fact, we design a (1 - ε)-approximation algorithm for weighted linear matroid intersection with time complexity Õ_{ε}(nnz(M₁) + nnz(M₂) + r_{*}^{ω}). Our algorithm improves upon the (1 - ε)-approximation algorithm by Huang-Kakimura-Kamiyama [SODA'16 & Math. Program.'19], which runs in Õ_{ε}(nnz(M₁) + nnz(M₂) + nr_{*}^{ω - 1}) time. To obtain these results, we combine Quanrud’s adaptive sparsification framework [ICALP'24] with a simple yet effective method for efficiently checking whether a given vector lies in the linear span of a subset of vectors, which is of independent interest.

Submodular Max-Min Allocation Under Identical Valuations

Authors: Kimon Boehmer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
In the problem of Submodular Max-Min Allocation, we are given a set of items, a set of players, and monotone submodular valuation functions that represent the satisfaction of a player with a certain subset of items. The goal is to find an allocation of the items to the players that maximizes the lowest satisfaction among all players. We study this problem in the special case where all players have the same valuation function. We devise a greedy algorithm which gives a 0.4-approximation, improving the previously best factor of 10/27 ≈ 0.37 by Uziahu and Feige. Furthermore, we study the integrality gap of the configuration LP when players have identical valuations. By constructing a variable assignment to the dual from a primal integral solution, we give the first constant upper bound on the integrality gap for submodular valuations. Generalizing the result to the case where players' allocations must be independent in k given matroids, we derive a 𝒪(k)-estimation algorithm for max-min allocation subject to k matroid constraints under identical valuations.

Abstract
Packing disjoint subgraphs in a given graph is a fundamental problem with many applications. Motivated by political districting, we focus on connected subgraphs that are compact (e.g., having constant radius from a single center vertex) and that satisfy additional composition requirements, such as a minimum population/weight threshold or balanced weight types (e.g., political affiliations). We aim to maximize coverage by disjoint districts that meet these requirements. In this work, we present new results that substantially improve the previously known bounds on balanced star districts for planar and minor-free graphs [Prathamesh Dharangutte et al., 2025]. In particular, we improve the approximation factor from O(log n) to O(1) for packing balanced star districts using the exact same algorithm, but with a refined analysis. We also extend the results beyond planar graphs to minor-free graphs and an even broader family of graphs of bounded expansion. Additionally, we obtain an O(1) approximation for packing radius-k districts (with a constant k) in planar and apex-minor-free graphs. In order to get a (1+ε) approximation on the max coverage, we show that this can be achieved if we allow a slight relaxation of the balancedness parameters (by a factor that can be made arbitrarily close to 1), for bounded radius-k districts on planar and apex-minor-free graphs. We show that all of these results can also be obtained if we enforce a minimum weight threshold for each district as the composition requirement, rather than balancedness. We present various results on hardness and hardness of approximation for this variant, by graph and district types.

Computational Complexity of Swish Is Solved

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 366, 13th International Conference on Fun with Algorithms (FUN 2026)

Abstract
Swish is a card game in which players are given cards having symbols (hoops and balls), and find a valid superposition of cards, called a "swish." Dailly, Lafourcade, and Marcadet (FUN 2024) studied a generalized version of Swish and showed that the problem is solvable in polynomial time with one symbol per card, while it is NP-complete with three or more symbols per card. In this paper, we resolve the previously open case of two symbols per card, which corresponds to the original game. We show that Swish is NP-complete for this case. Specifically, we prove the NP-hardness when the allowed transformations of cards are restricted to a single (horizontal or vertical) flip or 180-degree rotation, and extend the results to the original setting allowing all three transformations. In contrast, when neither transformation is allowed, we present a polynomial-time algorithm. Combining known and our results, we establish a complete characterization of the computational complexity of Swish with respect to both the number of symbols per card and the allowed transformations.

Fixed-Parameter Tractable Submodular Maximization over a Matroid

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
In this paper, we design fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithms for (non-monotone) submodular maximization subject to a matroid constraint, where the matroid rank r is treated as a fixed parameter that is independent of the total number of elements n. We provide two FPT algorithms: one for the offline setting and another for the random-order streaming setting. Our streaming algorithm achieves a 1/2-ε approximation using Õ(r/poly(ε)) memory, while our offline algorithm obtains a 1-(1)/(e)-ε approximation with n⋅ 2^{Õ(r/poly(ε))} runtime and Õ(r/poly(ε)) memory. Both approximation factors are near-optimal in their respective settings, given existing hardness results. In particular, our offline algorithm demonstrates that - unlike in the polynomial-time regime - there is essentially no separation between monotone and non-monotone submodular maximization under a matroid constraint in the FPT framework.

Semi-Streaming Algorithms for Hypergraph Matching

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We propose two one-pass streaming algorithms for the NP-hard hypergraph matching problem. The first algorithm stores a small subset of potential matching edges in a stack using dual variables to select edges. It has an approximation guarantee of 1/(d(1+ε)) and requires 𝒪((n/ε)log²n) bits of memory, where n is the number of vertices in the hypergraph, d is the maximum number of vertices in a hyperedge, and ε > 0 is a parameter to be chosen. The second algorithm computes, stores, and updates a single matching as the edges stream, with an approximation ratio dependent on a parameter α. Its best approximation guarantee is 1/((2d-1) + 2 √{d(d-1)}), and it requires only 𝒪(n) memory. We have implemented both algorithms and compared them with respect to solution quality, memory consumption, and running times on two diverse sets of hypergraphs with a non-streaming greedy and a naive streaming algorithm. Our results show that the streaming algorithms achieve much better solution quality than naive algorithms when facing adverse orderings. Furthermore, these algorithms reduce the memory required by a factor of 13 in the geometric mean on our test problems, and also outperform the offline Greedy algorithm in running time.

Weighted Matching in a Poly-Streaming Model

Authors: Ahammed Ullah, S M Ferdous, and Alex Pothen

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We introduce the poly-streaming model, a generalization of streaming models of computation in which k processors process k data streams containing a total of N items. The algorithm is allowed 𝒪(f(k)⋅M₁) space, where M₁ is either o (N) or the space bound for a sequential streaming algorithm. Processors may communicate as needed. Algorithms are assessed by the number of passes, per-item processing time, total runtime, space usage, communication cost, and solution quality. We design a single-pass algorithm in this model for approximating the maximum weight matching (MWM) problem. Given k edge streams and a parameter ε > 0, the algorithm computes a (2+ε)-approximate MWM. We analyze its performance in a shared-memory parallel setting: for any constant ε > 0, it runs in time 𝒪̃(L_{max}+n), where n is the number of vertices and L_{max} is the maximum stream length. It supports 𝒪(1) per-edge processing time using 𝒪̃(k⋅n) space. We further generalize the design to hierarchical architectures, in which k processors are partitioned into r groups, each with its own shared local memory. The total intergroup communication is 𝒪̃(r⋅n) bits, while all other performance guarantees are preserved. We evaluate the algorithm on a shared-memory system using graphs with trillions of edges. It achieves substantial speedups as k increases and produces matchings with weights significantly exceeding the theoretical guarantee. On our largest test graph, it reduces runtime by nearly two orders of magnitude and memory usage by five orders of magnitude compared to an offline algorithm.

Fault-Tolerant Matroid Bases

Authors: Matthias Bentert, Fedor V. Fomin, Petr A. Golovach, and Laure Morelle

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We investigate the problem of constructing fault-tolerant bases in matroids. Given a matroid ℳ and a redundancy parameter k, a k-fault-tolerant basis is a minimum-size set of elements such that, even after the removal of any k elements, the remaining subset still spans the entire ground set. Since matroids generalize linear independence across structures such as vector spaces, graphs, and set systems, this problem unifies and extends several fault-tolerant concepts appearing in prior research. Our main contribution is a fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm for the k-fault-tolerant basis problem, parameterized by both k and the rank r of the matroid. This two-variable parameterization by k + r is shown to be tight in the following sense. On the one hand, the problem is already NP-hard for k = 1. On the other hand, it is Para-NP-hard for r ≥ 3 and polynomial-time solvable for r ≤ 2.

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 133, 6th International Computer Programming Education Conference (ICPEC 2025)

Abstract
The paper presents a browser native C++ interpreter integrated into an AI-assisted educational platform designed to enhance programming learning in formal education. The interpreter leverages Parsing Expression Grammars (PEG) to generate Abstract Syntax Trees (AST) and executes C++ code using a TypeScript-based runtime. The system supports key C++ features, including pointer arithmetic, function overloading, and namespace resolution, and emulates memory management via reference-counted JavaScript objects. Integrated within a web-based learning environment, it provides automated feedback, error explanations, and code quality evaluations. The evaluation involved 4582 students in three difficulty levels and feedback from 14 teachers. The results include high system usability scale (SUS) scores (avg. 83.5) and WBLT learning effectiveness scores (avg. 4.58/5). Interpreter performance testing in 65 cases averaged under 10 ms per task, confirming its practical applicability to school curricula. The system supports SCORM and PWA deployment, enabling LMS-independent usage. The work introduces a technical innovation in browser-based C++ execution and a scalable framework for LLM-enhanced programming pedagogy.

Deterministic (2/3 - ε)-Approximation of Matroid Intersection Using Nearly-Linear Independence-Oracle Queries

Authors: Tatsuya Terao

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 349, 19th International Symposium on Algorithms and Data Structures (WADS 2025)

Abstract
In the matroid intersection problem, we are given two matroids ℳ₁ = (V, ℐ₁) and ℳ₂ = (V, ℐ₂) defined on the same ground set V of n elements, and the objective is to find a common independent set S ∈ ℐ₁ ∩ ℐ₂ of largest possible cardinality, denoted by r. In this paper, we consider a deterministic matroid intersection algorithm with only a nearly linear number of independence oracle queries. Our contribution is to present a deterministic O(n/(ε) + r log r)-independence-query (2/3-ε)-approximation algorithm for any ε > 0. Our idea is very simple: we apply a recent Õ(n √r/ε)-independence-query (1 - ε)-approximation algorithm of Blikstad [ICALP 2021], but terminate it before completion. Moreover, we also present a semi-streaming algorithm for (2/3 -ε)-approximation of matroid intersection in O(1/ε) passes.

Parameterized Matroid-Constrained Maximum Coverage

Authors: François Sellier

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 274, 31st Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2023)

Abstract
In this paper, we introduce the concept of Density-Balanced Subset in a matroid, in which independent sets can be sampled so as to guarantee that (i) each element has the same probability to be sampled, and (ii) those events are negatively correlated. These Density-Balanced Subsets are subsets in the ground set of a matroid in which the traditional notion of uniform random sampling can be extended. We then provide an application of this concept to the Matroid-Constrained Maximum Coverage problem. In this problem, given a matroid ℳ = (V, ℐ) of rank k on a ground set V and a coverage function f on V, the goal is to find an independent set S ∈ ℐ maximizing f(S). This problem is an important special case of the much-studied submodular function maximization problem subject to a matroid constraint; this is also a generalization of the maximum k-cover problem in a graph. In this paper, assuming that the coverage function has a bounded frequency μ (i.e., any element of the underlying universe of the coverage function appears in at most μ sets), we design a procedure, parameterized by some integer ρ, to extract in polynomial time an approximate kernel of size ρ ⋅ k that is guaranteed to contain a 1 - (μ - 1)/ρ approximation of the optimal solution. This procedure can then be used to get a Fixed-Parameter Tractable Approximation Scheme (FPT-AS) providing a 1 - ε approximation in time (μ/ε)^O(k) ⋅ |V|^O(1). This generalizes and improves the results of [Manurangsi, 2019] and [Huang and Sellier, 2022], providing the first FPT-AS working on an arbitrary matroid. Moreover, as the kernel has a very simple characterization, it can be constructed in the streaming setting.

Maximum Weight b-Matchings in Random-Order Streams

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 244, 30th Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2022)

Abstract
We consider the maximum weight b-matching problem in the random-order semi-streaming model. Assuming all weights are small integers drawn from [1,W], we present a 2 - 1/(2W) + ε approximation algorithm, using a memory of O(max(|M_G|, n) ⋅ poly(log(m),W,1/ε)), where |M_G| denotes the cardinality of the optimal matching. Our result generalizes that of Bernstein [Aaron Bernstein, 2020], which achieves a 3/2 + ε approximation for the maximum cardinality simple matching. When W is small, our result also improves upon that of Gamlath et al. [Gamlath et al., 2019], which obtains a 2 - δ approximation (for some small constant δ ∼ 10^{-17}) for the maximum weight simple matching. In particular, for the weighted b-matching problem, ours is the first result beating the approximation ratio of 2. Our technique hinges on a generalized weighted version of edge-degree constrained subgraphs, originally developed by Bernstein and Stein [Aaron Bernstein and Cliff Stein, 2015]. Such a subgraph has bounded vertex degree (hence uses only a small number of edges), and can be easily computed. The fact that it contains a 2 - 1/(2W) + ε approximation of the maximum weight matching is proved using the classical Kőnig-Egerváry’s duality theorem.

Approximating k-Edge-Connected Spanning Subgraphs via a Near-Linear Time LP Solver

Abstract
In the k-edge-connected spanning subgraph (kECSS) problem, our goal is to compute a minimum-cost sub-network that is resilient against up to k link failures: Given an n-node m-edge graph with a cost function on the edges, our goal is to compute a minimum-cost k-edge-connected spanning subgraph. This NP-hard problem generalizes the minimum spanning tree problem and is the "uniform case" of a much broader class of survival network design problems (SNDP). A factor of two has remained the best approximation ratio for polynomial-time algorithms for the whole class of SNDP, even for a special case of 2ECSS. The fastest 2-approximation algorithm is however rather slow, taking O(mn k) time [Khuller, Vishkin, STOC'92]. A faster time complexity of O(n²) can be obtained, but with a higher approximation guarantee of (2k-1) [Gabow, Goemans, Williamson, IPCO'93]. Our main contribution is an algorithm that (1+ε)-approximates the optimal fractional solution in Õ(m/ε²) time (independent of k), which can be turned into a (2+ε) approximation algorithm that runs in time Õ(m/(ε²) + {k²n^{1.5}}/ε²) for (integral) kECSS; this improves the running time of the aforementioned results while keeping the approximation ratio arbitrarily close to a factor of two.

Matroid-Constrained Maximum Vertex Cover: Approximate Kernels and Streaming Algorithms

Authors: Chien-Chung Huang and François Sellier

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 227, 18th Scandinavian Symposium and Workshops on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2022)

Abstract
Given a graph with weights on the edges and a matroid imposed on the vertices, our problem is to choose a subset of vertices that is independent in the matroid, with the objective of maximizing the total weight of covered edges. This problem is a generalization of the much studied max k-vertex cover problem, where the matroid is the simple uniform matroid, and it is also a special case of maximizing a monotone submodular function under a matroid constraint. In this work, we give a Fixed Parameter Tractable Approximation Scheme (FPT-AS) when the given matroid is a partition matroid, a laminar matroid, or a transversal matroid. Precisely, if k is the rank of the matroid, we obtain (1 - ε) approximation using (1/(ε))^{O(k)}n^{O(1)} time for partition and laminar matroids and using (1/(ε)+k)^{O(k)}n^{O(1)} time for transversal matroids. This extends a result of Manurangsi for uniform matroids [Pasin Manurangsi, 2018]. We also show that these ideas can be applied in the context of (single-pass) streaming algorithms. Our FPT-AS introduces a new technique based on matroid union, which may be of independent interest in extremal combinatorics.

Semi-Streaming Algorithms for Submodular Function Maximization Under b-Matching Constraint

Authors: Chien-Chung Huang and François Sellier

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 207, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2021)

Abstract
We consider the problem of maximizing a submodular function under the b-matching constraint, in the semi-streaming model. Our main results can be summarized as follows. - When the function is linear, i.e. for the maximum weight b-matching problem, we obtain a 2+ε approximation. This improves the previous best bound of 3+ε [Roie Levin and David Wajc, 2021]. - When the function is a non-negative monotone submodular function, we obtain a 3 + 2 √2 ≈ 5.828 approximation. This matches the currently best ratio [Roie Levin and David Wajc, 2021]. - When the function is a non-negative non-monotone submodular function, we obtain a 4 + 2 √3 ≈ 7.464 approximation. This ratio is also achieved in [Roie Levin and David Wajc, 2021], but only under the simple matching constraint, while we can deal with the more general b-matching constraint. We also consider a generalized problem, where a k-uniform hypergraph is given with an extra matroid constraint imposed on the edges, with the same goal of finding a b-matching that maximizes a submodular function. We extend our technique to this case to obtain an algorithm with an approximation of 8/3k+O(1). Our algorithms build on the ideas of the recent works of Levin and Wajc [Roie Levin and David Wajc, 2021] and of Garg, Jordan, and Svensson [Paritosh Garg et al., 2021]. Our main technical innovation is to introduce a data structure and associate it with each vertex and the matroid, to record the extra information of the stored edges. After the streaming phase, these data structures guide the greedy algorithm to make better choices.
