Abstract
In this work we consider two rich subclasses of weighted automata over fields: polynomially ambiguous weighted automata and copyless cost register automata. Primarily we are interested in understanding their expressiveness power. Over the field of rationals and 1-letter alphabets, it is known that the two classes coincide; they are equivalent to linear recurrence sequences (LRS) whose exponential bases are roots of rationals. We develop a tool we call Pumping Sequence Families, which, by exploiting the simple single-letter behaviour of the models, yields two pumping-like results over arbitrary fields with unrestricted alphabets, one for each class. As a corollary of these results, we present examples proving that the two classes become incomparable over the field of rationals with unrestricted alphabets. We complement the results by analysing the zeroness and equivalence problems. For weighted automata (even unrestricted) these problems are well understood: there are polynomial time, and even NC² algorithms. For copyless cost register automata we show that the two problems are PSpace-complete, where the difficulty is to show the lower bound.

Quantum Relaxations of CSP and Structure Isomorphism

Authors: Amin Karamlou

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
We investigate quantum relaxations of two key decision problems in computer science: the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) and the structure isomorphism problem. CSP asks whether a homomorphism exists between two relational structures, while structure isomorphism seeks an isomorphism between them. In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that many special cases of CSP can be reformulated in terms of the existence of perfect classical strategies in non-local games, a key topic of study in quantum information theory. These games have allowed us to study quantum advantage in relation to many important decision problems, such as the k-colouring problem, and the problem of solving binary constraint systems. Abramsky et al. (2017) have shown that all of these games can be seen as special instances of a non-local CSP game. Moreover, they show that perfect quantum strategies in this CSP game can be viewed as Kleisli morphisms of a graded monad on the category of relational structures, which they dub the quantum monad. In this way, the quantum monad provides a categorical characterisation of quantum advantage for the non-local CSP game. In this work we solidify and expand the results of Abramsky et al., answering several of their open questions. Firstly, we compare the definition of quantum graph homomorphisms arising from this work with an earlier definition of the concept due to Mančinska and Roberson and show that there are graphs which exhibit quantum advantage under one definition but not the other. Our second contribution is to extend the results of Abramsky et al. which only hold in the tensor product framework of quantum mechanics to the commuting operator framework. Next, we study a non-local structure isomorphism game, which generalises the well-studied graph isomorphism game. We show how the construction of the quantum monad can be refined to provide categorical semantics for quantum strategies in this game. This results in a category where morphisms coincide with quantum homomorphisms and isomorphisms coincide with quantum isomorphisms.

U-Index: A Universal Indexing Framework for Matching Long Patterns

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 338, 23rd International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2025)

Abstract
Motivation. Text indexing is a fundamental and well-studied problem. Classic solutions to this problem either replace the original text with a compressed representation, e.g., the FM-index and its variants, or keep it uncompressed but attach some redundancy - an index - to accelerate matching, e.g., the suffix array. The former solutions thus retain excellent compressed space, but are practically slow to construct and query. The latter approaches, instead, sacrifice space efficiency but are typically faster; for example, the suffix array takes much more space than the text itself for commonly used alphabets, like ASCII or DNA, but it is very fast to construct and query. Methods. In this paper, we show that efficient text indexing can be achieved using just a small extra space on top of the original text, provided that the query patterns are sufficiently long. More specifically, we develop a new indexing paradigm in which a sketch of a query pattern is first matched against a sketch of the text. Once candidate matches are retrieved, they are verified using the original text. This paradigm is thus universal in the sense that it allows us to use any solution to index the sketched text, like a suffix array, FM-index, or r-index. Results. We explore both the theory and the practice of this universal framework. With an extensive experimental analysis, we show that, surprisingly, universal indexes can be constructed much faster than their unsketched counterparts and take a fraction of the space, as a direct consequence of (i) having a lower bound on the length of patterns and (ii) working in sketch space. Furthermore, these data structures have the potential of retaining or even improving query time, because matching against the sketched text is faster and verifying candidates can be theoretically done in constant time per occurrence (or, in practice, by short and cache-friendly scans of the text). Finally, we discuss some important applications of this novel indexing paradigm to computational biology. We hypothesize that such indexes will be particularly effective when the queries are sufficiently long, and so we demonstrate applications in long-read mapping.

Weighted Rewriting: Semiring Semantics for Abstract Reduction Systems

Authors: Emma Ahrens, Jan-Christoph Kassing, Jürgen Giesl, and Joost-Pieter Katoen

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
We present novel semiring semantics for abstract reduction systems (ARSs). More precisely, we provide a weighted version of ARSs, where the reduction steps induce weights from a semiring. Inspired by provenance analysis in database theory and logic, we obtain a formalism that can be used for provenance analysis of arbitrary ARSs. Our semantics handle (possibly unbounded) non-determinism and possibly infinite reductions. Moreover, we develop several techniques to prove upper and lower bounds on the weights resulting from our semantics, and show that in this way one obtains a uniform approach to analyze several different properties like termination, derivational complexity, space complexity, safety, as well as combinations of these properties.

Algebraic Language Theory with Effects

Abstract
Regular languages - the languages accepted by deterministic finite automata - are known to be precisely the languages recognized by finite monoids. This characterization is the origin of algebraic language theory. In this paper, we generalize the correspondence between automata and monoids to automata with generic computational effects given by a monad, providing the foundations of an effectful algebraic language theory. We show that, under suitable conditions on the monad, a language is computable by an effectful automaton precisely when it is recognizable by (1) an effectful monoid morphism into an effect-free finite monoid, and (2) a monoid morphism into a monad-monoid bialgebra whose carrier is a finitely generated algebra for the monad, the former mode of recognition being conceptually completely new. Our prime application is a novel algebraic approach to languages computed by probabilistic finite automata. Additionally, we derive new algebraic characterizations for nondeterministic probabilistic finite automata and for weighted finite automata over unrestricted semirings, generalizing previous results on weighted algebraic recognition over commutative rings.

Weighted GKAT: Completeness and Complexity

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We propose Weighted Guarded Kleene Algebra with Tests (wGKAT), an uninterpreted weighted programming language equipped with branching, conditionals, and loops. We provide an operational semantics for wGKAT using a variant of weighted automata and introduce a sound and complete axiomatization. We also provide a polynomial time decision procedure for bisimulation equivalence.

Subshifts Defined by Nondeterministic and Alternating Plane-Walking Automata

Authors: Benjamin Hellouin de Menibus and Pacôme Perrotin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
Plane-walking automata were introduced by Salo & Törma to recognise languages of two-dimensional infinite words (subshifts), the counterpart of 4-way finite automata for two-dimensional finite words. We extend the model to allow for nondeterminism and alternation of quantifiers. We prove that the recognised subshifts form a strict subclass of sofic subshifts, and that the classes corresponding to existential and universal nondeterminism are incomparable and both larger that the deterministic class. We define a hierarchy of subshifts recognised by plane-walking automata with alternating quantifiers, which we conjecture to be strict.

Boundedness of Cost Register Automata over the Integer Min-Plus Semiring

Authors: Andrei Draghici, Radosław Piórkowski, and Andrew Ryzhikov

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
Cost register automata (CRAs) are deterministic automata with registers taking values from a fixed semiring. A CRA computes a function from words to values from this semiring. CRAs are tightly related to well-studied weighted automata. Given a CRA, the boundedness problem asks if there exists a natural number N such that for every word, the value of the CRA on this word does not exceed N. This problem is known to be undecidable for the class of linear CRAs over the integer min-plus semiring (ℤ∪{+∞}, min, +), but very little is known about its subclasses. In this paper, we study boundedness of copyless linear CRAs with resets over the integer min-plus semiring. We show that it is decidable for such CRAs with at most two registers. More specifically, we show that it is, respectively, NL-complete and in coNP if the numbers in the input are presented in unary and binary. We also provide complexity results for two classes with an arbitrary number of registers. Namely, we show that for CRAs that use the minimum operation only in the output function, boundedness is PSPACE-complete if transferring values to other registers is allowed, and is coNP-complete otherwise. Finally, for each f_i in the hierarchy of fast-growing functions, we provide a stateless CRA with i registers whose output exceeds N only on runs longer than f_i(N). Our construction yields a non-elementary lower bound already for four registers.

Nivat-Theorem and Logic for Weighted Pushdown Automata on Infinite Words

Authors: Manfred Droste, Sven Dziadek, and Werner Kuich

Abstract
Recently, weighted ω-pushdown automata have been introduced by Droste, Ésik, Kuich. This new type of automaton has access to a stack and models quantitative aspects of infinite words. Here, we consider a simple version of those automata. The simple ω-pushdown automata do not use ε-transitions and have a very restricted stack access. In previous work, we could show this automaton model to be expressively equivalent to context-free ω-languages in the unweighted case. Furthermore, semiring-weighted simple ω-pushdown automata recognize all ω-algebraic series. Here, we consider ω-valuation monoids as weight structures. As a first result, we prove that for this weight structure and for simple ω-pushdown automata, Büchi-acceptance and Muller-acceptance are expressively equivalent. In our second result, we derive a Nivat theorem for these automata stating that the behaviors of weighted ω-pushdown automata are precisely the projections of very simple ω-series restricted to ω-context-free languages. The third result is a weighted logic with the same expressive power as the new automaton model. To prove the equivalence, we use a similar result for weighted nested ω-word automata and apply our present result of expressive equivalence of Muller and Büchi acceptance.

Greibach Normal Form for omega-Algebraic Systems and Weighted Simple omega-Pushdown Automata

Authors: Manfred Droste, Sven Dziadek, and Werner Kuich

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 150, 39th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2019)

Abstract
In weighted automata theory, many classical results on formal languages have been extended into a quantitative setting. Here, we investigate weighted context-free languages of infinite words, a generalization of omega-context-free languages (Cohen, Gold 1977) and an extension of weighted context-free languages of finite words (Chomsky, Schützenberger 1963). As in the theory of formal grammars, these weighted languages, or omega-algebraic series, can be represented as solutions of mixed omega-algebraic systems of equations and by weighted omega-pushdown automata. In our first main result, we show that mixed omega-algebraic systems can be transformed into Greibach normal form. Our second main result proves that simple omega-reset pushdown automata recognize all omega-algebraic series that are a solution of an omega-algebraic system in Greibach normal form. Simple reset automata do not use epsilon-transitions and can change the stack only by at most one symbol. These results generalize fundamental properties of context-free languages to weighted languages.
