Abstract
In this paper, we show the energy efficiency of Java applications can be improved by applying Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) inside the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). We augment the JVM to record the energy consumption of hot methods as the underlying CPU is run at different clock frequencies; after all the frequency possibilities for a method have been explored, the execution of the method in an optimized run is set to the CPU frequency that leads to the most energy-efficient execution for that method. We introduce a new sampling methodology to overcome the dual challenges in our design: both the underlying measurement mechanism for energy profiling and the DVFS for energy optimization are overhead-prone. We extend JikesRVM with our approach and benchmark it over the DaCapo suite on a server-class Linux machine. Experiments show we are able to use 14.9% less energy than built-in power management in Linux, and improve energy efficiency by 21.1% w.r.t. the metric of Energy-Delay Product (EDP).

Intensional Effect Polymorphism

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 37, 29th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2015)

Abstract
Type-and-effect systems are a powerful tool for program construction and verification. We describe intensional effect polymorphism, a new foundation for effect systems that integrates static and dynamic effect checking. Our system allows the effect of polymorphic code to be intensionally inspected through a lightweight notion of dynamic typing. When coupled with parametric polymorphism, the powerful system utilizes runtime information to enable precise effect reasoning, while at the same time retains strong type safety guarantees. We build our ideas on top of an imperative core calculus with regions. The technical innovations of our design include a relational notion of effect checking, the use of bounded existential types to capture the subtle interactions between static typing and dynamic typing, and a differential alignment strategy to achieve efficiency in dynamic typing. We demonstrate the applications of intensional effect polymorphism in concurrent programming, security, graphical user interface access, and memoization.

An Analytical Framework for Understanding Urban Functionality from Human Activities (Short Paper)

Authors: Chaogui Kang and Yu Liu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 114, 10th International Conference on Geographic Information Science (GIScience 2018)

Abstract
The intertwined relationship between urban functionality and human activity has been widely recognized and quantified with the assistance of big geospatial data. In specific, urban land uses as an important facet of urban structure can be identified from spatiotemporal patterns of aggregate human activities. In this article, we propose a space, time and activity cuboid based analytical framework for clustering urban spaces into different categories of urban functionality based on the variation of activity intensity (T-fiber), mixture (A-fiber) and interaction (I- and O-fiber). The ability of the proposed framework is empirically evaluated by three case studies.

Modelling Spatial Patterns Using Graph Convolutional Networks (Short Paper)

Authors: Di Zhu and Yu Liu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 114, 10th International Conference on Geographic Information Science (GIScience 2018)

Abstract
The understanding of geographical reality is a process of data representation and pattern discovery. Former studies mainly adopted continuous-field models to represent spatial variables and to investigate the underlying spatial continuity/heterogeneity in a regular spatial domain. In this article, we introduce a more generalized model based on graph convolutional neural networks that can capture the complex parameters of spatial patterns underlying graph-structured spatial data, which generally contain both Euclidean spatial information and non-Euclidean feature information. A trainable site-selection framework is proposed to demonstrate the feasibility of our model in geographic decision problems.

Theory and Practice of Coroutines with Snapshots

Authors: Aleksandar Prokopec and Fengyun Liu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 109, 32nd European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2018)

Abstract
While event-driven programming is a widespread model for asynchronous computing, its inherent control flow fragmentation makes event-driven programs notoriously difficult to understand and maintain. Coroutines are a general control flow construct that can eliminate control flow fragmentation. However, coroutines are still missing in many popular languages. This gap is partly caused by the difficulties of supporting suspendable computations in the language runtime. We introduce first-class, type-safe, stackful coroutines with snapshots, which unify many variants of suspendable computing. Our design relies solely on the static metaprogramming support of the host language, without modifying the language implementation or the runtime. We also develop a formal model for type-safe, stackful and delimited coroutines, and we prove the respective safety properties. We show that the model is sufficiently general to express iterators, single-assignment variables, async-await, actors, event streams, backtracking, symmetric coroutines and continuations. Performance evaluations reveal that the proposed metaprogramming-based approach has a decent performance, with workload-dependent overheads of 1.03-2.11 x compared to equivalent manually written code, and improvements of up to 6 x compared to other approaches.

Approximability of the Eight-Vertex Model

Authors: Jin-Yi Cai, Tianyu Liu, Pinyan Lu, and Jing Yu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 169, 35th Computational Complexity Conference (CCC 2020)

Abstract
We initiate a study of the classification of approximation complexity of the eight-vertex model defined over 4-regular graphs. The eight-vertex model, together with its special case the six-vertex model, is one of the most extensively studied models in statistical physics, and can be stated as a problem of counting weighted orientations in graph theory. Our result concerns the approximability of the partition function on all 4-regular graphs, classified according to the parameters of the model. Our complexity results conform to the phase transition phenomenon from physics. We introduce a quantum decomposition of the eight-vertex model and prove a set of closure properties in various regions of the parameter space. Furthermore, we show that there are extra closure properties on 4-regular planar graphs. These regions of the parameter space are concordant with the phase transition threshold. Using these closure properties, we derive polynomial time approximation algorithms via Markov chain Monte Carlo. We also show that the eight-vertex model is NP-hard to approximate on the other side of the phase transition threshold.

Counting Perfect Matchings and the Eight-Vertex Model

Authors: Jin-Yi Cai and Tianyu Liu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 168, 47th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2020)

Abstract
We study the approximation complexity of the partition function of the eight-vertex model on general 4-regular graphs. For the first time, we relate the approximability of the eight-vertex model to the complexity of approximately counting perfect matchings, a central open problem in this field. Our results extend those in [Jin-Yi Cai et al., 2018]. In a region of the parameter space where no previous approximation complexity was known, we show that approximating the partition function is at least as hard as approximately counting perfect matchings via approximation-preserving reductions. In another region of the parameter space which is larger than the region that is previously known to admit Fully Polynomial Randomized Approximation Scheme (FPRAS), we show that computing the partition function can be reduced to counting perfect matchings (which is valid for both exact and approximate counting). Moreover, we give a complete characterization of nonnegatively weighted (not necessarily planar) 4-ary matchgates, which has been open for several years. The key ingredient of our proof is a geometric lemma. We also identify a region of the parameter space where approximating the partition function on planar 4-regular graphs is feasible but on general 4-regular graphs is equivalent to approximately counting perfect matchings. To our best knowledge, these are the first problems that exhibit this dichotomic behavior between the planar and the nonplanar settings in approximate counting.

Torpid Mixing of Markov Chains for the Six-vertex Model on Z^2

Authors: Tianyu Liu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 116, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2018)

Abstract
In this paper, we study the mixing time of two widely used Markov chain algorithms for the six-vertex model, Glauber dynamics and the directed-loop algorithm, on the square lattice Z^2. We prove, for the first time that, on finite regions of the square lattice these Markov chains are torpidly mixing under parameter settings in the ferroelectric phase and the anti-ferroelectric phase.

StoqMA Meets Distribution Testing

Authors: Yupan Liu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 197, 16th Conference on the Theory of Quantum Computation, Communication and Cryptography (TQC 2021)

Abstract
StoqMA captures the computational hardness of approximating the ground energy of local Hamiltonians that do not suffer the so-called sign problem. We provide a novel connection between StoqMA and distribution testing via reversible circuits. First, we prove that easy-witness StoqMA (viz. eStoqMA, a sub-class of StoqMA) is contained in MA. Easy witness is a generalization of a subset state such that the associated set’s membership can be efficiently verifiable, and all non-zero coordinates are not necessarily uniform. This sub-class eStoqMA contains StoqMA with perfect completeness (StoqMA₁), which further signifies a simplified proof for StoqMA₁ ⊆ MA [Bravyi et al., 2006; Bravyi and Terhal, 2010]. Second, by showing distinguishing reversible circuits with ancillary random bits is StoqMA-complete (as a comparison, distinguishing quantum circuits is QMA-complete [Janzing et al., 2005]), we construct soundness error reduction of StoqMA. Additionally, we show that both variants of StoqMA that without any ancillary random bit and with perfect soundness are contained in NP. Our results make a step towards collapsing the hierarchy MA ⊆ StoqMA ⊆ SBP [Bravyi et al., 2006], in which all classes are contained in AM and collapse to NP under derandomization assumptions.
