Matching Regular-Typed Pattern Languages: Quadratic-Time Algorithms

Abstract
Pattern languages (PAT) are a class of languages generated by expressions called patterns that may contain variables. In a pattern, each variable can be instantiated with an arbitrary string. Typed pattern languages extend PAT by associating a type (constraint) with each variable that restricts the domain of allowed substitutions. In this paper, we study regular-typed PAT (PATwRT), where all types are represented either by a regular expression or by an ε-NFA. We consider the PATwRT matching problem for patterns with a single repeated variable of the form P = α₁ β α₂ β ⋯ β α_K. We present simple algorithms whose running time is linear in K and quadratic in the input length N, with polynomial dependence on the sizes of the type representations. Our results extend previous quadratic-time work in two directions: (1) the quadratic-time algorithm for untyped PAT of Fernau et al. (STACS 2015), and (2) the quadratic-time algorithm for the restricted PATwRT K = 3, i.e., α₁ β α₂ β α₃ of Nogami and Terauchi (MFCS 2025).

Simplicial Approximation to CW Complexes with Spherical Delaunay Triangulations

Authors: Raphaël Tinarrage

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
Simplicial approximation provides a framework for constructing simplicial complexes that are homotopy equivalent to a given manifold, provided a CW structure is explicitly known. However, its conventional implementation quickly becomes intractable on a computer: barycentric subdivision produces poorly shaped simplices, and the star condition introduces many vertices. To address these limitations, this article develops a subdivision scheme based on spherical Delaunay triangulations, which attains better refinement properties than barycentric subdivisions. Moreover, the star condition is reframed as two independent problems, one geometric and the other combinatorial, respectively tackled in the language of locally equiconnected spaces and the list homomorphism problem, allowing an exponential reduction in the number of vertices. Via a prototype implementation, we obtain simplicial complexes homotopy equivalent to Grassmannians and Stiefel manifolds up to dimension 5.

Abstract
Quantum computing is increasingly integrated into High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments, where quantum processors act as specialized accelerators within hybrid workflows. The Munich Quantum Software Stack (MQSS) - a unified compilation and runtime framework for hybrid quantum–classical computing - provides the foundation for this integration. However, the growing heterogeneity of applications demands more flexible compilation tools. This work introduces an MultiLevel Intermediate Representation (MLIR)-based translation library that extends MQSS by enabling the conversion of CUDA-Quantum (CUDA-Q) (quake) dialects into machine learning–oriented MLIR representations compatible with modern compiler ecosystems. Leveraging MLIR’s dialect-driven design, the library enables hardware-agnostic transformations, device-specific optimizations, and seamless integration with MQSS components. The proposed approach bridges quantum compilation and contemporary machine learning frameworks, facilitating GPU-accelerated circuit simulation, hybrid quantum–classical workflows, and heterogeneous execution, thereby advancing a unified compiler infrastructure for quantum computing.

What Obstructed Skies Teach Us About Satellite Internet

Abstract
Low Earth Orbit satellite networks can extend Internet connectivity to remote areas where traditional broadband infrastructure is unavailable. However physical obstructions, e.g., dense forest cover, can interfere with satellite communication by blocking the user terminal’s line of sight to the satellite constellation. Unfortunately the impact of such obstructions on the connectivity of user terminals is not well studied. We bridge this gap by conducting an experimental study of how physical obstructions influence satellite network connectivity. Through controlled experiments using a purpose-built hardware testbed, we quantify the performance degradation caused by physical obstructions to user terminals. Our results show that obstructions increase round-trip latency by an average of 4% and packet loss by 0.3%. Obstructions cause user terminals to connect to a different satellite than the unobstructed terminal approximately 15% of the time. We find evidence of a previously undocumented adaptive mechanism we call responsive routing, where the satellite network switches obstructed terminals to alternative satellites within the standard 15-second interval between typical handovers. Our data is publicly available as supplementary material to this article.

SwiftQueue: Optimizing Low-Latency Applications with Swift Packet Queuing

Abstract
Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput (L4S), as an emerging router-queue management technique, has seen steady deployment in the industry. An L4S-enabled router assigns each packet to the queue based on the packet header marking. Currently, L4S employs per-flow queue selection, i.e., all packets of a flow are marked the same way and thus use the same queues, even though each packet is marked separately. However, this may hurt tail latency and latency-sensitive applications because transient congestion and queue buildups may only affect a fraction of packets in a flow. We present SwiftQueue, a new L4S queue-selection strategy in which a sender uses a novel per-packet latency predictor to pinpoint which packets likely have latency spikes or drops. The insight is that many packet-level latency variations result from complex interactions among recent packets at shared router queues. Yet, these intricate packet-level latency patterns are hard to learn efficiently by traditional models. Instead, SwiftQueue uses a custom Transformer, which is well-studied for its expressiveness on sequential patterns, to predict the next packet’s latency based on the latencies of recently received ACKs. Based on the predicted latency of each outgoing packet, SwiftQueue’s sender dynamically marks the L4S packet header to assign packets to potentially different queues, even within the same flow. Using real network traces, we show that SwiftQueue is 45-65% more accurate in predicting latency and its variations than state-of-art methods. Based on its latency prediction, SwiftQueue reduces the tail latency for L4S-enabled flows by 36-45%, compared with the existing L4S queue-selection method.

Making Congestion Control Algorithms Insensitive to Underlying Propagation Delays

Authors: Cyrus Illick, Michael Roger, Vishal Misra, and Dan Rubenstein

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 139, 1st New Ideas in Networked Systems (NINeS 2026)

Abstract
Underlying propagation delays, which significantly impact flow Round-Trip-Times (RTTs), fundamentally shape how congestion control algorithms (CCAs) allocate bandwidth among competing flows. Traditionally, lower RTTs were desirable, as a flow rate would decrease as RTT increased under conventional CCAs such as Reno and Cubic. More recently, algorithms like BBR reversed this behavior, favoring flows with larger RTTs. In modern heterogeneous networks, where competing flows may employ different CCAs and serve diverse application workloads, notions of fairness become ambiguous and RTT’s role further complexifies addressing an already very challenging problem. We offer a simple but initially counter-intuitive remedy to address how all CCAs can remove this inherent sensitivity to propagation delay: have all flows "emulate" the same underlying propagation delay. Unsurprisingly, this idea is often met with a lot of resistance, since it is in many ways counter to many fundamental tenets of networking and congestion control. In this paper, we try to make the case that while the idea is not a silver bullet on its own, it can greatly simplify design and predictability across existing and future congestion control protocols going forward.

Output-Sensitive Evaluation of Acyclic Conjunctive Regular Path Queries

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 365, 29th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2026)

Abstract
Conjunctive Regular Path Queries, or CRPQs for short, are an essential construct in graph query languages. In this paper, we propose the first output-sensitive algorithm for evaluating acyclic CRPQs. It is output-sensitive in the sense that its complexity is a function of the sizes of the input graph and of the query output and not of the output sizes of the regular expressions that appear in the query, as these latter sizes can be larger than the query output size. Our algorithm proceeds in two stages. In the first stage, it contracts the given query into a free-connex acyclic one such that the output of the original query can be obtained from the output of the contracted one. This contraction removes bound variables by composing regular expressions or by promoting bound variables to free ones. The minimum necessary number of promoted bound variables gives the contraction width, which is a novel parameter specific to CRPQs. In the second stage, our algorithm evaluates the free-connex acyclic CRPQ and projects away the columns of the promoted bound variables. It ensures output-sensitivity by computing the calibrated outputs of the regular expressions appearing in the free-connex acyclic CRPQ in time proportional to their sizes. Our algorithm has lower complexity than the state-of-the-art approaches for problem instances where the query output is asymptotically smaller than the output sizes of the regular expressions that appear in the query.

Parameterized Complexity of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem

Authors: Václav Blažej, Andreas Emil Feldmann, Foivos Fioravantes, Paweł Rzążewski, and Ondřej Suchý

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
The Directed Traveling Salesman Problem (DTSP) is a variant of the classical Traveling Salesman Problem in which the edges in the graph are directed and a vertex and edge can be visited multiple times. The goal is to find a directed closed walk of minimum length (or total weight) that visits every vertex of the given graph at least once. In a yet more general version, Directed Waypoint Routing Problem (DWRP), some vertices are marked as terminals and we are only required to visit all terminals. Furthermore, each edge has its capacity bounding the number of times this edge can be used by a solution. While both problems (and many other variants of TSP) were extensively investigated, mostly from the approximation point of view, there are surprisingly few results concerning the parameterized complexity. Our starting point is the result of Marx et al. [APPROX/RANDOM 2016] who proved that DTSP is W[1]-hard parameterized by distance to pathwidth 3. In this paper we aim to initiate the systematic complexity study of variants of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem with respect to various, mostly structural, parameters. We show that DWRP is FPT parameterized by the solution size, the feedback edge number and the vertex integrity of the underlying undirected graph. Furthermore, the problem is XP parameterized by treewidth. On the complexity side, we show that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by the distance to constant treedepth.

Amnesiac Flooding: Easy to Break, Hard to Escape

Authors: Henry Austin, Maximilien Gadouleau, George B. Mertzios, and Amitabh Trehan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 356, 39th International Symposium on Distributed Computing (DISC 2025)

Abstract
Broadcast is a central problem in distributed computing. Recently, Hussak and Trehan [PODC'19/ STACS'20/DC'23] proposed a stateless broadcasting protocol (Amnesiac Flooding), which was surprisingly proven to terminate in asymptotically optimal time (linear in the diameter of the network). However, it remains unclear: (i) Are there other stateless terminating broadcast algorithms with the desirable properties of Amnesiac Flooding, (ii) How robust is Amnesiac Flooding with respect to faults? In this paper we make progress on both of these fronts. Under a reasonable restriction (obliviousness to message content) additional to the fault-free synchronous model, we prove that Amnesiac Flooding is the only strictly stateless deterministic protocol that can achieve terminating broadcast. We achieve this by identifying four natural properties of a terminating broadcast protocol that Amnesiac Flooding uniquely satisfies. In contrast, we prove that even minor relaxations of any of these four criteria allow the construction of other terminating broadcast protocols. On the other hand, we prove that Amnesiac Flooding can become non-terminating or non-broadcasting, even if we allow just one node to drop a single message on a single edge in a single round. As a tool for proving this, we focus on the set of all configurations of transmissions between nodes in the network, and obtain a dichotomy characterizing the configurations, starting from which, Amnesiac Flooding terminates. Additionally, we characterise the structure of sets of Byzantine agents capable of forcing non-termination or non-broadcast of the protocol on arbitrary networks.

Cache Timing Leakages in Zero-Knowledge Protocols

Authors: Shibam Mukherjee, Christian Rechberger, and Markus Schofnegger

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 354, 7th Conference on Advances in Financial Technologies (AFT 2025)

Abstract
The area of modern zero-knowledge proof systems has seen a significant rise in popularity over the last couple of years, with new techniques and optimized constructions emerging on a regular basis. As the field matures, the aspect of implementation attacks becomes more relevant, however side-channel attacks on zero-knowledge proof systems have seen surprisingly little treatment so far. In this paper, we give an overview of potential attack vectors and show that some of the underlying finite field libraries, and implementations of heavily used components like hash functions using them, are vulnerable w.r.t. cache attacks on CPUs. On the positive side, we demonstrate that the computational overhead to protect against these attacks is relatively small.

Advancing Intelligent Personal Assistants for Human Spaceflight

Authors: Leonie Bensch, Oliver Bensch, and Tommy Nilsson

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 130, Advancing Human-Computer Interaction for Space Exploration (SpaceCHI 2025)

Abstract
The Artemis program and upcoming missions to Mars mark a new era of human space exploration that will require new tools to support astronaut autonomy in the absence of real-time communication with Earth. This paper investigates the role of voice-based intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) in future crewed space missions. Through semi-structured interviews with astronauts (n=3) and spaceflight experts (n=12), we identify key user-centered design requirements for IPAs in this uniquely constrained and safety-critical environment. Our thematic analysis reveals core requirements for flexibility, reliability, offline capability, and multimodal interaction. Drawing on these findings, we outline design guidelines for next-generation IPAs and discuss how technologies such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), knowledge graphs, and augmented reality should be combined to support flexible, reliable, and multimodal IPAs for future human spaceflight missions.

Movement in Low Gravity (MoLo) – LUNA: Biomechanical Modelling to Mitigate Lunar Surface Operation Risks

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 130, Advancing Human-Computer Interaction for Space Exploration (SpaceCHI 2025)

Abstract
The Artemis programme seeks to develop and test concepts, hardware and approaches to support long term habitation of the Lunar surface, and future missions to Mars. In preparation for the Artemis missions determination of tasks to be performed, the functional requirements of such tasks and as mission duration extends whether physiological deconditioning becomes functionally significant, compromising the crew member’s ability to perform critical tasks on the surface, and/or upon return to earth [MoLo-LUNA – leveraging the Molo programme (and several other activities) - could become a key supporting activity for LUNA incl. validation of the Puppeteer offloading system itself via creation of a complementary MoLo-LUNA-LAB. Furthermore, the MoLo-LUNA programme could become a key facilitator of simulator suit instrumentation/definition, broader astronaut training activities and mission architecture development – including Artemis mission simulations. By employing a Puppeteer system external to the LUNA chamber hall it will optimise utilisation and cost-effectiveness of LUNA, and as such represents a critical service to future LUNA stakeholders. Furthermore, MoLo-LUNA would generate a unique data set that can be leveraged to predict de-conditioning on the Lunar surface - and thereby optimise functionality, and minimise mission risk – including informing the need for, and prescription of exercise countermeasures on the Lunar Surface and in transit. Thus, MoLo-LUNA offers a unique opportunity to place LUNA, and ESA as a key ongoing provider of evidence to define, optimise and support crew Artemis surface missions.

Linear Time Subsequence and Supersequence Regex Matching

Authors: Antoine Amarilli, Florin Manea, Tina Ringleb, and Markus L. Schmid

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
It is well-known that checking whether a given string w matches a given regular expression r can be done in quadratic time O(|w|⋅ |r|) and that this cannot be improved to a truly subquadratic running time of O((|w|⋅ |r|)^{1-ε}) assuming the strong exponential time hypothesis (SETH). We study a different matching paradigm where we ask instead whether w has a subsequence that matches r, and show that regex matching in this sense can be solved in linear time O(|w| + |r|). Further, the same holds if we ask for a supersequence. We show that the quantitative variants where we want to compute a longest or shortest subsequence or supersequence of w that matches r can be solved in O(|w|⋅ |r|), i. e., asymptotically no worse than classical regex matching; and we show that O(|w| + |r|) is conditionally not possible for these problems. We also investigate these questions with respect to other natural string relations like the infix, prefix, left-extension or extension relation instead of the subsequence and supersequence relation. We further study the complexity of the universal problem where we ask if all subsequences (or supersequences, infixes, prefixes, left-extensions or extensions) of an input string satisfy a given regular expression.

Efficient Matching of Some Fundamental Regular Expressions with Backreferences

Authors: Taisei Nogami and Tachio Terauchi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
Regular expression matching is of practical importance due to its widespread use in real-world applications. In practical use, regular expressions are often used with real-world extensions. Accordingly, the matching problem of regular expressions with real-world extensions has been actively studied in recent years, yielding steady progress. However, backreference, a popular extension supported by most modern programming languages such as Java, Python, JavaScript and others in their standard libraries for string processing, is an exception to this positive trend. In fact, it is known that the matching problem of regular expressions with backreferences (rewbs) is theoretically hard and the existence of an asymptotically fast matching algorithm for arbitrary rewbs seems unlikely. Even among currently known partial solutions, the balance between efficiency and generality remains unsatisfactory. To bridge this gap, we present an efficient matching algorithm for rewbs of the form e_0 (e)_1 e_1 \1 e_2 where e_0, e, e_1, e_2 are pure regular expressions, which are fundamental and frequently used in practical applications. It runs in quadratic time with respect to the input string length, substantially improving the best-known cubic time complexity for these rewbs. Our algorithm combines ideas from both stringology and automata theory in a novel way. We leverage two techniques from automata theory, injection and summarization, to simultaneously examine matches whose backreferenced substrings are either a fixed right-maximal repeat or its extendable prefixes, which are concepts from stringology. By further utilizing a subtle property of extendable prefixes, our algorithm correctly decides the matching problem while achieving the quadratic-time complexity.

FO-Query Enumeration over SLP-Compressed Structures of Bounded Degree

Authors: Markus Lohrey, Sebastian Maneth, and Markus L. Schmid

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
Enumerating the result set of a first-order query over a relational structure of bounded degree can be done with linear preprocessing and constant delay. In this work, we extend this result towards the compressed perspective where the structure is given in a potentially highly compressed form by a straight-line program (SLP). Our main result is an algorithm that enumerates the result set of a first-order query over a structure of bounded degree that is represented by an SLP satisfying the so-called apex condition. For a fixed formula, the enumeration algorithm has constant delay and needs a preprocessing time that is linear in the size of the SLP.
