Abstract
Let G be a finite, connected metric graph and let X be a subset of G. If X is sufficiently dense in G, we show that the Gromov-Hausdorff distance matches the Hausdorff distance, namely d_GH(G,X) = d_H(G,X). When the metric graph is the circle G = S¹ with circumference 2π, a recent study established the equality d_GH(S¹,X) = d_H(S¹,X) whenever d_GH(S¹,X) < π/6. Our results relax this hypothesis to d_GH(S¹,X) < π/3, and furthermore, we show that the constant π/3 is the best possible. We lower bound the Gromov-Hausdorff distance d_GH(G,X) by the Hausdorff distance d_H(G,X) via a simple topological obstruction: the existence of a possibly discontinuous function f: G → X with too small distortion contradicts the connectedness of G.

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
In the d-Euclidean Distance Matrix Completion (d-EDMC) problem, one aims to determine whether a given partial matrix of pairwise distances can be extended to a full Euclidean distance matrix in d dimensions. This problem is a cornerstone of computational geometry with numerous applications. While classical work on this problem often focuses on exploiting connections to semidefinite programming typically leading to approximation algorithms, we focus on exact algorithms and propose a novel distance-from-triviality parameterization framework to obtain tractability results for d-EDMC. We identify key structural patterns in the input that capture entry density, including chordal substructures and coverability of specified entries by fully specified principal submatrices. We obtain: 1) The first fixed-parameter algorithm (FPT algorithm) for d-EDMC parameterized by d and the maximum number of unspecified entries per row/column. This is achieved through a novel compression algorithm that reduces a given instance to a submatrix on 𝒪(1) rows (for fixed values of the parameters). 2) The first FPT algorithm for d-EDMC parameterized by d and the minimum number of fully specified principal submatrices whose entries cover all specified entries of the given matrix. This result is also achieved through a compression algorithm. 3) A polynomial-time algorithm for d-EDMC when both d and the minimum fill-in of a natural graph representing the specified entries are fixed constants. This result is achieved by combining tools from distance geometry and algorithms from real algebraic geometry. Our work identifies interesting parallels between EDM completion and graph problems, with our algorithms exploiting techniques from both domains.

Dynamic Light Spanners in Doubling Metrics

Authors: Sujoy Bhore, Jonathan Conroy, and Arnold Filtser

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
A t-spanner of a point set X in a metric space (𝒳, δ) is a graph G with vertex set P such that, for any pair of points u,v ∈ X, the distance between u and v in G is at most t times δ(u,v). We study the problem of maintaining a spanner for a dynamic point set X - that is, when X undergoes a sequence of insertions and deletions - in a metric space of constant doubling dimension. For any constant ε > 0, we maintain a (1+ε)-spanner of P whose total weight remains within a constant factor of the weight of the minimum spanning tree of X. Each update (insertion or deletion) can be performed in poly(log Φ) time, where Φ denotes the aspect ratio of X. Prior to our work, no efficient dynamic algorithm for maintaining a light-weight spanner was known even for point sets in low-dimensional Euclidean space.

Dimension Reduction for Clustering: The Curious Case of Discrete Centers

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
The Johnson-Lindenstrauss transform is a fundamental method for dimension reduction in Euclidean spaces, that can map any dataset of n points into dimension O(log n) with low distortion of their distances. This dimension bound is tight in general, but one can bypass it for specific problems. Indeed, tremendous progress has been made for clustering problems, especially in the continuous setting where centers can be picked from the ambient space ℝ^d. Most notably, for k-median and k-means, the dimension bound was improved to O(log k) [Makarychev, Makarychev and Razenshteyn, STOC 2019]. We explore dimension reduction for clustering in the discrete setting, where centers can only be picked from the dataset, and present two results that are both parameterized by the doubling dimension of the dataset, denoted as ddim. The first result shows that dimension O_{ε}(ddim + log k + log log n) suffices, and is moreover tight, to guarantee that the cost is preserved within factor 1±ε for every set of centers. Our second result eliminates the log log n term in the dimension through a relaxation of the guarantee (namely, preserving the cost only for all approximately-optimal sets of centers), which maintains its usefulness for downstream applications. Overall, we achieve strong dimension reduction in the discrete setting, and find that it differs from the continuous setting not only in the dimension bound, which depends on the doubling dimension, but also in the guarantees beyond preserving the optimal value, such as which clusterings are preserved.

Parameterized Complexity of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
The Directed Traveling Salesman Problem (DTSP) is a variant of the classical Traveling Salesman Problem in which the edges in the graph are directed and a vertex and edge can be visited multiple times. The goal is to find a directed closed walk of minimum length (or total weight) that visits every vertex of the given graph at least once. In a yet more general version, Directed Waypoint Routing Problem (DWRP), some vertices are marked as terminals and we are only required to visit all terminals. Furthermore, each edge has its capacity bounding the number of times this edge can be used by a solution. While both problems (and many other variants of TSP) were extensively investigated, mostly from the approximation point of view, there are surprisingly few results concerning the parameterized complexity. Our starting point is the result of Marx et al. [APPROX/RANDOM 2016] who proved that DTSP is W[1]-hard parameterized by distance to pathwidth 3. In this paper we aim to initiate the systematic complexity study of variants of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem with respect to various, mostly structural, parameters. We show that DWRP is FPT parameterized by the solution size, the feedback edge number and the vertex integrity of the underlying undirected graph. Furthermore, the problem is XP parameterized by treewidth. On the complexity side, we show that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by the distance to constant treedepth.

The Geodesic Fréchet Distance Between Two Curves Bounding a Simple Polygon

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
The Fréchet distance is a popular similarity measure that is well-understood for polygonal curves in ℝ^d: near-quadratic time algorithms exist, and conditional lower bounds suggest that these results cannot be improved significantly, even in one dimension and when approximating with a factor less than three. We consider the special case where the curves bound a simple polygon and distances are measured via geodesics inside this simple polygon. Here the conditional lower bounds do not apply; Efrat et al. (2002) were able to give a near-linear time 2-approximation algorithm. In this paper, we significantly improve upon their result: we present a (1+ε)-approximation algorithm, for any ε > 0, that runs in 𝒪(1/(ε) (n+m log n) log nm log 1/(ε)) time for a simple polygon bounded by two curves with n and m vertices, respectively. To do so, we show how to compute the reachability of specific groups of points in the free space at once, by interpreting the free space as one between separated one-dimensional curves. We solve this one-dimensional problem in near-linear time, generalizing a result by Bringmann and Künnemann (2015). Finally, we give a linear time exact algorithm if the two curves bound a convex polygon.

Optimal Competitive Ratio for Optimization Problems with Congestion Effects

Authors: Miriam Fischer, Dario Paccagnan, and Cosimo Vinci

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
In this work we study online optimization problems with congestion effects. These are problems where tasks arrive online and a decision maker is required to allocate them on the fly to available resources in order to minimize the cost suffered, which grows with the amount of resources used. This class of problems corresponds to the online counterpart of well-known studied problems, including optimization problems with diseconomies of scale [Konstantin Makarychev and Maxim Sviridenko, 2018], minimum cost in congestion games [Gairing and Paccagnan, 2023], and load balancing problems [Baruch Awerbuch et al., 1995]. Within this setting, our work settles the problem of designing online algorithms with optimal competitive ratio, i.e., algorithms whose incurred cost is as close as possible to that of an oracle with complete knowledge of the future instance ahead of time. We provide three contributions underpinning this result. First, we show that no online algorithm can achieve a competitive ratio below a given factor depending solely on the resource costs. Second, we show that, when guided by carefully modified cost functions, the greedy algorithm achieves a competitive ratio matching this lower bound and thus is optimal. Finally, we show how to compute such modified cost functions in polynomial time.

Dynamic Streaming Algorithms for Geometric Independent Set

Authors: Timothy M. Chan and Yuancheng Yu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 349, 19th International Symposium on Algorithms and Data Structures (WADS 2025)

Abstract
We present the first space-efficient, fully dynamic streaming algorithm for computing a constant-factor approximation of the maximum independent set size of n axis-aligned rectangles in two dimensions. For an arbitrarily small constant δ > 0, our algorithm obtains an O((1/δ)²) approximation and requires O(U^δ polylog n) space and update time with high probability, assuming that coordinates are integers bounded by U. We also obtain a similar result for fat objects in any constant dimension. This extends recent non-streaming algorithms by Bhore and Chan from SODA'25, and also greatly extends previous streaming results, which were limited to special types of geometric objects such as one-dimensional intervals and unit disks.

On the Performance of Mildly Greedy Players in k-Coloring Games

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
We study the performance of mildly greedy players in k-coloring games, a relevant subclass of anti-coordination games. A mildly greedy player is a selfish agent who is willing to deviate from a certain strategy profile only if her payoff improves by a factor of more than ε, for some given ε ≥ 0. In presence of mildly greedy players, stability is captured by the concept of (1+ε)-approximate Nash equilibrium. In this paper, we first show that, for any k-coloring game, the (1+ε)-approximate price of anarchy, i.e., the price of anarchy of (1+ε)-approximate pure Nash equilibria, is at least (k-1)/((k-1)ε +k), and that this bound is tight for any ε ≥ 0. Then, we evaluate the approximation ratio of the solutions achieved after a (1 + ϵ)-approximate one-round walk starting from any initial strategy profile, where a (1 + ϵ)-approximate one-round walk is a sequence of (1 + ε)-approximate best-responses, one for each player. We provide a lower bound of min{(k-2)/k, (k-1)/((k-1)ε+k)} on this ratio, for any ε ≥ 0 and k ≥ 5; for the cases of k = 3 and k = 4, we give finer bounds depending on ε. Our work generalizes the results known for cut games, the special case of k-coloring games restricted to k = 2.

Lipschitz Decompositions of Finite 𝓁_{p} Metrics

Authors: Robert Krauthgamer and Nir Petruschka

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 332, 41st International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2025)

Abstract
Lipschitz decomposition is a useful tool in the design of efficient algorithms involving metric spaces. While many bounds are known for different families of finite metrics, the optimal parameters for n-point subsets of 𝓁_p, for p > 2, remained open, see e.g. [Naor, SODA 2017]. We make significant progress on this question and establish the bound β = O(log^{1-1/p} n). Building on prior work, we demonstrate applications of this result to two problems, high-dimensional geometric spanners and distance labeling schemes. In addition, we sharpen a related decomposition bound for 1 < p < 2, due to Filtser and Neiman [Algorithmica 2022].

Abstract
Distance geometry explores the properties of distance spaces that can be exactly represented as the pairwise Euclidean distances between points in ℝ^d (d ≥ 1), or equivalently, distance spaces that can be isometrically embedded in ℝ^d. In this work, we investigate whether a distance space can be isometrically embedded in ℝ^d after applying a limited number of modifications. Specifically, we focus on two types of modifications: outlier deletion (removing points) and distance modification (adjusting distances between points). The central problem, Euclidean Embedding Editing, asks whether an input distance space on n points can be transformed, using at most k modifications, into a space that is isometrically embeddable in ℝ^d. We present several fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) and approximation algorithms for this problem. Our first result is an algorithm that solves Euclidean Embedding Editing in time (dk)^𝒪(d+k) + n^𝒪(1). The core subroutine of this algorithm, which is of independent interest, is a polynomial-time method for compressing the input distance space into an equivalent instance of Euclidean Embedding Editing with 𝒪((dk)²) points. For the special but important case of Euclidean Embedding Editing where only outlier deletions are allowed, we improve the parameter dependence of the FPT algorithm and obtain a running time of min{(d+3)^k, 2^{d+k}} ⋅ n^𝒪(1). Additionally, we provide an FPT-approximation algorithm for this problem, which outputs a set of at most 2 ⋅ Opt outliers in time 2^d ⋅ n^{𝒪(1)}. This 2-approximation algorithm improves upon the previous (3+ε)-approximation algorithm by Sidiropoulos, Wang, and Wang [SODA '17]. Furthermore, we complement our algorithms with hardness results motivating our choice of parameterizations.

On Sparse Covers of Minor Free Graphs, Low Dimensional Metric Embeddings, and Other Applications

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 332, 41st International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2025)

Abstract
Given a metric space (X,d_X), a (β,s,Δ)-sparse cover is a collection of clusters 𝒞 ⊆ P(X) with diameter at most Δ, such that for every point x ∈ X, the ball B_X(x,Δ/β) is fully contained in some cluster C ∈ 𝒞, and x belongs to at most s clusters in 𝒞. Our main contribution is to show that the shortest path metric of every K_r-minor free graphs admits (O(r),O(r²),Δ)-sparse cover, and for every ε > 0, (4+ε,O(1/ε)^r,Δ)-sparse cover (for arbitrary Δ > 0). We then use this sparse cover to show that every K_r-minor free graph embeds into 𝓁_∞^{Õ(1/ε)^{r+1}⋅log n} with distortion 3+ε (resp. into 𝓁_∞^{Õ(r²)⋅log n} with distortion O(r)). Further, among other applications, this sparse cover immediately implies an algorithm for the oblivious buy-at-bulk problem in fixed minor free graphs with the tight approximation factor O(log n) (previously nothing beyond general graphs was known).

Parallel Query Processing with Heterogeneous Machines

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 328, 28th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2025)

Abstract
We study the problem of computing a full Conjunctive Query in parallel using p heterogeneous machines. Our computational model is similar to the MPC model, but each machine has its own cost function mapping from the number of bits it receives to a cost. An optimal algorithm should minimize the maximum cost across all machines. We consider algorithms over a single communication round and give a lower bound and matching upper bound for databases where each relation has the same cardinality. We do this for both linear cost functions like in previous work, but also for more general cost functions. For databases with relations of different cardinalities, we also find a lower bound, and give matching upper bounds for specific queries like the cartesian product, the join, the star query, and the triangle query. Our approach is inspired by the HyperCube algorithm, but there are additional challenges involved when machines have heterogeneous cost functions.

Computing Bi-Lipschitz Outlier Embeddings into the Line

Authors: Karine Chubarian and Anastasios Sidiropoulos

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 176, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2020)

Abstract
The problem of computing a bi-Lipschitz embedding of a graphical metric into the line with minimum distortion has received a lot of attention. The best-known approximation algorithm computes an embedding with distortion O(c²), where c denotes the optimal distortion [Bădoiu et al. 2005]. We present a bi-criteria approximation algorithm that extends the above results to the setting of outliers. Specifically, we say that a metric space (X,ρ) admits a (k,c)-embedding if there exists K ⊂ X, with |K| = k, such that (X⧵ K, ρ) admits an embedding into the line with distortion at most c. Given k ≥ 0, and a metric space that admits a (k,c)-embedding, for some c ≥ 1, our algorithm computes a (poly(k, c, log n), poly(c))-embedding in polynomial time. This is the first algorithmic result for outlier bi-Lipschitz embeddings. Prior to our work, comparable outlier embeddings where known only for the case of additive distortion.

Learning Lines with Ordinal Constraints

Abstract
We study the problem of finding a mapping f from a set of points into the real line, under ordinal triple constraints. An ordinal constraint for a triple of points (u,v,w) asserts that |f(u)-f(v)| < |f(u)-f(w)|. We present an approximation algorithm for the dense case of this problem. Given an instance that admits a solution that satisfies (1-ε)-fraction of all constraints, our algorithm computes a solution that satisfies (1-O(ε^{1/8}))-fraction of all constraints, in time O(n⁷) + (1/ε)^{O(1/ε^{1/8})} n.
