Temporal Modelling in Cultural Heritage Knowledge Graphs: Use Cases, Requirements, Evaluation, and Decision Support

Abstract
Our culture, history and world are in constant motion, continuously shaped by the flow of time, evolving narratives, and shifting relationships. Capturing this temporal complexity within cultural heritage (CH) knowledge graphs is essential for preserving the dynamic nature of human heritage. However, standard RDF predicates fail to effectively model the temporal aspects of cultural data, such as changing facts, evolving relationships, and temporal concepts. Over the past two decades, a variety of RDF-based approaches have been proposed to address this limitation, yet guidance is missing on which method best suits specific CH contexts. This paper presents a systematic evaluation of temporal RDF modelling approaches from a CH perspective. Based on an analysis of real-world CH use cases, core temporal requirements are identified that reflect both modelling expressivity and practical concerns. Six prominent approaches - RDF*, tRDF, Named Graphs, Singleton Property, N-ary Relations, and 4D Fluents - are assessed across these requirements. Our findings reveal that no single solution fits all scenarios, but suitable approaches can be selected based on project-specific priorities. To support practitioners, a decision-support tool is introduced to guide them in selecting the most suitable extension for their specific needs. This work provides practical guidance for CH modelling and contributes to the broader development of temporally aware Linked Data.

Demand-Aware Small-World Networks on Clustered Demands

Abstract
Small-world networks are attractive for the efficient routing they provide, requiring only a low link density. They have hence also been considered for the design of distributed systems, such as peer-to-peer networks. However, existing small-world network designs are oblivious to the actual traffic they serve. In this paper, we initiate the study of demand-aware small-world networks. In particular, we extend the Kleinberg graph model, by allowing the nodes to choose the distribution of long-range links according to the traffic demand. We present a formal analysis of the weighted route lengths for the important case of clustered demands. We show both in theory and in simulations, using real-world traffic workloads, that demand-aware small-world graphs can significantly outperform their demand-oblivious counterparts.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

Modern Datalog: Concepts, Methods, Applications (Invited Paper)

Abstract
Pure Datalog is arguably the most fundamental rule language, elegant and simple, but also often too limited to be useful in practice. This has motivated the introduction of many new expressive features, ranging from datatypes and related functions, over aggregates and semi-ring generalisations, to existential quantifiers and complex terms. In spite of their variety, all these approaches remain true to the nature of Datalog as a direct, pattern-based way of computing on structured data. We therefore find that a modern notion of Datalog is emerging, distinctly different from other approaches of logic programming and with its own set of related methods and applications. In this course, we introduce Datalog and its most common extensions, and explain when and how these features can be used together (which is often, but not always, safe to do). We further look at modern Datalog systems and some of their primary use cases. Hands-on work with Datalog and its extensions is done with the free Datalog engine https://knowsys.github.io/nemo-doc/. The course is accessible to all audiences and does not assume specific prior knowledge.

From Permissioned to Proof-of-Stake Consensus

Abstract
This paper presents the first generic compiler that transforms any permissioned consensus protocol into a proof-of-stake permissionless consensus protocol. For each of the following properties, if the initial permissioned protocol satisfies that property in the partially synchronous setting, the consequent proof-of-stake protocol also satisfies that property in the partially synchronous and quasi-permissionless setting (with the same fault-tolerance): consistency; liveness; optimistic responsiveness; every composable log-specific property; and message complexity of a given order. Moreover, our transformation ensures that the output protocol satisfies accountability (identifying culprits in the event of a consistency violation), whether or not the original permissioned protocol satisfied it.

Polynomial-Time Constant-Approximation for Fair Sum-Of-Radii Clustering

Abstract
In a seminal work, Chierichetti et al. [Chierichetti et al., 2017] introduced the (t,k)-fair clustering problem: Given a set of red points and a set of blue points in a metric space, a clustering is called fair if the number of red points in each cluster is at most t times and at least 1/t times the number of blue points in that cluster. The goal is to compute a fair clustering with at most k clusters that optimizes certain objective function. Considering this problem, they designed a polynomial-time O(1)- and O(t)-approximation for the k-center and the k-median objective, respectively. Recently, Carta et al. [Carta et al., 2024] studied this problem with the sum-of-radii objective and obtained a (6+ε)-approximation with running time O((k log_{1+ε}(k/ε))^k n^O(1)), i.e., fixed-parameter tractable in k. Here n is the input size. In this work, we design the first polynomial-time O(1)-approximation for (t,k)-fair clustering with the sum-of-radii objective, improving the result of Carta et al. Our result places sum-of-radii in the same group of objectives as k-center, that admit polynomial-time O(1)-approximations. This result also implies a polynomial-time O(1)-approximation for the Euclidean version of the problem, for which an f(k)⋅n^O(1)-time (1+ε)-approximation was known due to Drexler et al. [Drexler et al., 2023]. Here f is an exponential function of k. We are also able to extend our result to any arbitrary 𝓁 ≥ 2 number of colors when t = 1. This matches known results for the k-center and k-median objectives in this case. The significant disparity of sum-of-radii compared to k-center and k-median presents several complex challenges, all of which we successfully overcome in our work. Our main contribution is a novel cluster-merging-based analysis technique for sum-of-radii that helps us achieve the constant-approximation bounds.

Routing Few Robots in a Crowded Network

Abstract
In Graph Coordinated Motion Planning, we are given a graph G some of whose vertices are occupied by robots, and we are asked to route k marked robots to their destinations while avoiding collisions and without exceeding a given budget 𝓁 on the number of robot moves. We continue the recent investigation of the problem [ICALP 2024], focusing on the parameter k that captures the task of routing a small number of robots in a possibly crowded graph. We prove that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by 𝓁 even for k = 1, but fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by k plus the treedepth of G. We complement the latter algorithm with an NP-hardness reduction which shows that both parameters are necessary to achieve tractability.

Cutoff Theorems for the Equivalence of Parameterized Quantum Circuits

Abstract
Many promising quantum algorithms in economics, medical science, and material science rely on circuits that are parameterized by a large number of angles. To ensure that these algorithms are efficient, these parameterized circuits must be heavily optimized. However, most quantum circuit optimizers are not verified, so this procedure is known to be error-prone. For this reason, there is growing interest in the design of equivalence checking algorithms for parameterized quantum circuits. In this paper, we define a generalized class of parameterized circuits with arbitrary rotations and show that this problem is decidable for cyclotomic gate sets. We propose a cutoff-based procedure which reduces the problem of verifying the equivalence of parameterized quantum circuits to the problem of verifying the equivalence of finitely many parameter-free quantum circuits. Because the number of parameter-free circuits grows exponentially with the number of parameters, we also propose a probabilistic variant of the algorithm for cases when the number of parameters is intractably large. We show that our techniques extend to equivalence modulo global phase, and describe an efficient angle sampling procedure for cyclotomic gate sets.

Large Multi-Modal Model Cartographic Map Comprehension for Textual Locality Georeferencing

Abstract
Millions of biological sample records collected in the last few centuries archived in natural history collections are un-georeferenced. Georeferencing complex locality descriptions associated with these collection samples is a highly labour-intensive task collection agencies struggle with. None of the existing automated methods exploit maps that are an essential tool for georeferencing complex relations. We present preliminary experiments and results of a novel method that exploits multi-modal capabilities of recent Large Multi-Modal Models (LMM). This method enables the model to visually contextualize spatial relations it reads in the locality description. We use a grid-based approach to adapt these auto-regressive models for this task in a zero-shot setting. Our experiments conducted on a small manually annotated dataset show impressive results for our approach (∼1 km Average distance error) compared to uni-modal georeferencing with Large Language Models and existing georeferencing tools. The paper also discusses the findings of the experiments in light of an LMM’s ability to comprehend fine-grained maps. Motivated by these results, a practical framework is proposed to integrate this method into a georeferencing workflow.

CoaKG: A Contextualized Knowledge Graph Approach for Exploratory Search and Decision Making

Abstract
In decision-making scenarios, an information need arises due to a knowledge gap when a decision-maker needs more knowledge to make a decision. Users may take the initiative to acquire knowledge to fill this gap through exploratory search approaches using Knowledge Graphs (KGs) as information sources, but their queries can be incomplete, inaccurate, and ambiguous. Although KGs have great potential for exploratory search, they are incomplete by nature. Besides, for both Crowd-sourced KGs and KGs constructed by integrating several different information sources of varying quality to be effectively consumed, there is a need for a Trust Layer. Our research aims to enrich and allow querying KGs to support context-aware exploration in decision-making scenarios. We propose a layered architecture for Context Augmented Knowledge Graphs-based Decision Support Systems with a Knowledge Layer that operates under a Dual Open World Assumption (DOWA). Under DOWA, the evaluation of the truthfulness of the information obtained from KGs depends on the context of its claims and the tasks carried out or intended (purpose). The Knowledge Layer comprises a Context Augmented KG (CoaKG) and a CoaKG Query Engine. The CoaKG contains contextual mappings to identify explicit context and rules to infer implicit context. The CoaKG Query Engine is designed as a query-answering approach that retrieves all contextualized answers from the CoaKG. A Proof of Concept (PoC) based on Wikidata was developed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Knowledge Layer.

Model Ensembling for Constrained Optimization

Abstract
Many instances of decision making under objective uncertainty can be decomposed into two steps: predicting the objective function and then optimizing for the best feasible action under the estimate of the objective vector. We study the problem of ensembling models for optimization of uncertain linear objectives under arbitrary constraints. We imagine we are given a collection of predictive models mapping a feature space to multi-dimensional real-valued predictions, which form the coefficients of a linear objective that we would like to optimize. We give two ensembling methods that can provably result in transparent decisions that strictly improve on all initial policies. The first method operates in the "white box" setting in which we have access to the underlying prediction models and the second in the "black box" setting in which we only have access to the induced decisions (in the downstream optimization problem) of the constituent models, but not their underlying point predictions. They are transparent or trustworthy in the sense that the user can reliably predict long-term ensemble rewards even if the instance by instance predictions are imperfect.

A Hybrid Programming Language for Formal Modeling and Verification of Hybrid Systems

Abstract
Designing and modeling complex cyber-physical systems (CPS) faces the double challenge of combined discrete-continuous dynamics and concurrent behavior. Existing formal modeling and verification languages for CPS expose the underlying proof search technology. They lack high-level structuring elements and are not efficiently executable. The ensuing modeling gap renders formal CPS models hard to understand and to validate. We propose a high-level programming-based approach to formal modeling and verification of hybrid systems as a hybrid extension of an Active Objects language. Well-structured hybrid active programs and requirements allow automatic, reachability-preserving translation into differential dynamic logic, a logic for hybrid (discrete-continuous) programs. Verification is achieved by discharging the resulting formulas with the theorem prover KeYmaera X. We demonstrate the usability of our approach with case studies.

Abstract
This paper examines the approach taken by team gitastrophe in the CG:SHOP 2022 challenge. The challenge was to partition the edges of a geometric graph, with vertices represented by points in the plane and edges as straight lines, into the minimum number of planar subgraphs. We used a simple variation of a conflict optimizer strategy used by team Shadoks in the previous year’s CG:SHOP to rank second in the challenge.

Coordinated Motion Planning Through Randomized k-Opt (CG Challenge)

Abstract
This paper examines the approach taken by team gitastrophe in the CG:SHOP 2021 challenge. The challenge was to find a sequence of simultaneous moves of square robots between two given configurations that minimized either total distance travelled or makespan (total time). Our winning approach has two main components: an initialization phase that finds a good initial solution, and a k-opt local search phase which optimizes this solution. This led to a first place finish in the distance category and a third place finish in the makespan category.

Computing Low-Cost Convex Partitions for Planar Point Sets with Randomized Local Search and Constraint Programming (CG Challenge)

Abstract
The Minimum Convex Partition problem (MCP) is a problem in which a point-set is used as the vertices for a planar subdivision, whose number of edges is to be minimized. In this planar subdivision, the outer face is the convex hull of the point-set, and the interior faces are convex. In this paper, we discuss and implement the approach to this problem using randomized local search, and different initialization techniques based on maximizing collinearity. We also solve small instances optimally using a SAT formulation. We explored this as part of the 2020 Computational Geometry Challenge, where we placed first as Team UBC.
