Abstract
We study discrete k-clustering problems in general metric spaces that are constrained by a combination of two different fairness conditions within the demographic fairness model. Given a metric space (P,d), where every point in P is equipped with a protected attribute, and a number k, the goal is to partition P into k clusters with a designated center each, such that a center-based objective function is minimized and the attributes are fairly distributed with respect to the following two fairness concepts: 1) group fairness: We aim for clusters with balanced numbers of attributes by specifying lower and upper bounds for the desired attribute proportions. 2) diverse center selection: Clusters have natural representatives, i.e., their centers. We ask for a balanced set of representatives by specifying the desired number of centers to choose from each attribute. Dickerson, Esmaeili, Morgenstern, and Pena [John P. Dickerson et al., 2023] denote the combination of these two constraints as doubly constrained fair clustering. They present algorithms whose guarantees depend on the best known approximation factors for either of these problems. Currently, this implies an 8-approximation with a small additive violation on the group fairness constraint. For k-center, we improve this approximation factor to 4 with a small additive violation. This guarantee also depends on the currently best algorithm for DS-fair k-center given by Jones, Nguyen and Nguyen [Matthew Jones et al., 2020]. For k-median and k-means, we propose the first constant-factor approximation algorithms. Our algorithms transform a solution that satisfies diverse center selection into a doubly constrained fair clustering using an LP-based approach. Furthermore, our results are generalizable to other center-selection constraints, such as matroid k-clustering and knapsack constraints.

Dynamic Light Spanners in Doubling Metrics

Authors: Sujoy Bhore, Jonathan Conroy, and Arnold Filtser

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
A t-spanner of a point set X in a metric space (𝒳, δ) is a graph G with vertex set P such that, for any pair of points u,v ∈ X, the distance between u and v in G is at most t times δ(u,v). We study the problem of maintaining a spanner for a dynamic point set X - that is, when X undergoes a sequence of insertions and deletions - in a metric space of constant doubling dimension. For any constant ε > 0, we maintain a (1+ε)-spanner of P whose total weight remains within a constant factor of the weight of the minimum spanning tree of X. Each update (insertion or deletion) can be performed in poly(log Φ) time, where Φ denotes the aspect ratio of X. Prior to our work, no efficient dynamic algorithm for maintaining a light-weight spanner was known even for point sets in low-dimensional Euclidean space.

LAMINA: An MLIR-Based Translation Library for Heterogeneous Quantum-Classical Compilation

Authors: Marco De Pascale, Mario Hernández Vera, Jorge Echavarria, Muhammad Nufail Farooqi, Martin Schulz, and Laura Schulz

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 141, 17th Workshop on Parallel Programming and Run-Time Management Techniques for Many-Core Architectures and 15th Workshop on Design Tools and Architectures for Multicore Embedded Computing Platforms (PARMA-DITAM 2026)

Abstract
Quantum computing is increasingly integrated into High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments, where quantum processors act as specialized accelerators within hybrid workflows. The Munich Quantum Software Stack (MQSS) - a unified compilation and runtime framework for hybrid quantum–classical computing - provides the foundation for this integration. However, the growing heterogeneity of applications demands more flexible compilation tools. This work introduces an MultiLevel Intermediate Representation (MLIR)-based translation library that extends MQSS by enabling the conversion of CUDA-Quantum (CUDA-Q) (quake) dialects into machine learning–oriented MLIR representations compatible with modern compiler ecosystems. Leveraging MLIR’s dialect-driven design, the library enables hardware-agnostic transformations, device-specific optimizations, and seamless integration with MQSS components. The proposed approach bridges quantum compilation and contemporary machine learning frameworks, facilitating GPU-accelerated circuit simulation, hybrid quantum–classical workflows, and heterogeneous execution, thereby advancing a unified compiler infrastructure for quantum computing.

Abstract
Since the emergence of transformer-based models, the computational demands for Large Language Model (LLM) inference have been increasing exponentially, primarily due to their compounding parameter sizes, their structural complexity, and the use of non-linear functions. This tendency leads to the necessity of deploying them on low-power edge devices and DNN accelerators, to fuel next-generation agentic AI systems. Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRAs) have proven to be a compelling paradigm for edge acceleration, combining the programmability of general-purpose platforms with the high performance and energy efficiency associated with ASICs. In this work, we introduce an end-to-end performance modeling and mapping framework for LLM inference on heterogeneous CGRAs. Our methodology enables rapid exploration of the micro-architectural design space parameters, i.e., the number of processing elements, vector sizes, and memory configurations, by providing an accurate, explainable, and analytical CGRA performance modeling methodology, with an average cycle error of 0.9%. Architecturally, we build upon R-Blocks, a heterogeneous CGRA platform, and extend it to support floating-point arithmetic operations as well as a full-stack compilation and mapping flow for both full (FP32) and quantized (INT8) Llama2 models. The proposed methodology, evaluated on a 22nm technology node, achieves superior peak performance per Watt compared to related works such as REVAMP and CFEACT (1.8× and 2.8× respectively).

TURBO: Utility-Aware Bandwidth Allocation for Cloud-Augmented Autonomous Control

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 139, 1st New Ideas in Networked Systems (NINeS 2026)

Abstract
Autonomous driving system progress has been driven by improvements in machine learning (ML) models, whose computational demands now exceed what edge devices alone can provide. The cloud offers abundant compute, but the network has long been treated as an unreliable bottleneck rather than a co-equal part of the autonomous vehicle control loop. We argue that this separation is no longer tenable: safety-critical autonomy requires co-design of control, models, and network resource allocation itself. We introduce TURBO, a cloud-augmented control framework that addresses this challenge, formulating bandwidth allocation and control pipeline configuration across both the car and cloud as a joint optimization problem. TURBO maximizes benefit to the car while guaranteeing safety in the face of highly variable network conditions. We implement TURBO and evaluate it in both simulation and real-world deployment, showing it can improve average accuracy by up to 15.6%pt over existing on-vehicle-only pipelines. Our code is made available at www.github.com/NetSys/turbo.

SwiftQueue: Optimizing Low-Latency Applications with Swift Packet Queuing

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 139, 1st New Ideas in Networked Systems (NINeS 2026)

Abstract
Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput (L4S), as an emerging router-queue management technique, has seen steady deployment in the industry. An L4S-enabled router assigns each packet to the queue based on the packet header marking. Currently, L4S employs per-flow queue selection, i.e., all packets of a flow are marked the same way and thus use the same queues, even though each packet is marked separately. However, this may hurt tail latency and latency-sensitive applications because transient congestion and queue buildups may only affect a fraction of packets in a flow. We present SwiftQueue, a new L4S queue-selection strategy in which a sender uses a novel per-packet latency predictor to pinpoint which packets likely have latency spikes or drops. The insight is that many packet-level latency variations result from complex interactions among recent packets at shared router queues. Yet, these intricate packet-level latency patterns are hard to learn efficiently by traditional models. Instead, SwiftQueue uses a custom Transformer, which is well-studied for its expressiveness on sequential patterns, to predict the next packet’s latency based on the latencies of recently received ACKs. Based on the predicted latency of each outgoing packet, SwiftQueue’s sender dynamically marks the L4S packet header to assign packets to potentially different queues, even within the same flow. Using real network traces, we show that SwiftQueue is 45-65% more accurate in predicting latency and its variations than state-of-art methods. Based on its latency prediction, SwiftQueue reduces the tail latency for L4S-enabled flows by 36-45%, compared with the existing L4S queue-selection method.

OrbitalBrain: A Distributed Framework for Training ML Models in Space

Abstract
Earth observation nanosatellites capture high-resolution photos of the Earth in near real-time. These images increasingly support ML applications that are critical for safety and response, such as forest fire and flood detection. However, the downlink bandwidth is limited, resulting in days or weeks of delay from image capture to training. In this work, we propose OrbitalBrain, an efficient in-space distributed ML training framework that leverages limited and predictable satellite compute, bandwidth, and power to intelligently balance data transfer, model aggregation, and local training. Our evaluations demonstrate that OrbitalBrain achieves 1.52×-12.4× speedup in time-to-accuracy while always reaching a higher final model accuracy compared to state-of-the-art ground-based or federated learning baselines. Furthermore, our approach is complementary to satellite imagery capturing and downloading, enhancing the overall efficiency of satellite-based applications.

Reward Interfaces with Best-Effort Implementations

Authors: Rafael Dewes and Rayna Dimitrova

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
Interface theories, notably interface automata, serve as expressive frameworks for component-based design, specifying component behavior and interaction in concurrent systems. Traditional interface formalisms specify assumptions that a component’s environment must satisfy and the guarantees that each component provides. This qualitative view of component interaction based on imposing strict assumptions and Boolean guarantees may, however, not be expressive enough to capture the system’s allowed or desired behaviors under different environments. In this paper, we introduce reward interfaces to support component-based design while accommodating multi-valued correctness requirements and adaptive best-effort satisfaction of component’s guarantees. Building upon interface automata, our framework enables modeling a rich class of quantitative component specifications. We propose formal notions of implementation, refinement and compatibility for reward interfaces. We study a class of reward interfaces with automata-based representations, for which we provide algorithms for checking compatibility and refinement, and existence of best-effort implementations. Our framework offers a comprehensive approach to reward interface specification and design.

Higher-Order Delsarte Dual LPs: Lifting, Constructions and Completeness

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
A central and longstanding open problem in coding theory is the rate-versus-distance trade-off for binary error-correcting codes. In a seminal work, Delsarte introduced a family of linear programs establishing relaxations on the size of optimum codes. To date, the state-of-the-art upper bounds for binary codes come from dual feasible solutions to these LPs. Still, these bounds are exponentially far from the best-known existential constructions. Recently, hierarchies of linear programs extending and strengthening Delsarte’s original LPs were introduced for linear codes, which we refer to as higher-order Delsarte LPs. These new hierarchies were shown to provably converge to the actual value of optimum codes, namely, they are complete hierarchies. Therefore, understanding them and their dual formulations becomes a valuable line of investigation. Nonetheless, their higher-order structure poses challenges. In fact, analysis of all known convex programming hierarchies strengthening Delsarte’s original LPs has turned out to be exceedingly difficult and essentially nothing is known, stalling progress in the area since the 1970s. Our main result is an analysis of the higher-order Delsarte LPs via their dual formulation. Although quantitatively, our current analysis only matches the best-known upper bounds, it shows, for the first time, how to tame the complexity of analyzing a hierarchy strengthening Delsarte’s original LPs. In doing so, we reach a better understanding of the structure of the hierarchy, which may serve as the foundation for further quantitative improvements. We provide two additional structural results for this hierarchy. First, we show how to explicitly lift any feasible dual solution from level k to a (suitable) larger level 𝓁 while retaining the objective value. Second, we give a novel proof of completeness using the dual formulation.

Abstract
We show that concrete hardness assumptions about learning or cloning the output state of a random quantum circuit can be used as the foundation for secure quantum cryptography. In particular, under these assumptions we construct secure one-way state generators (OWSGs), digital signature schemes, quantum bit commitments, and private key encryption schemes. We also discuss evidence for these hardness assumptions by analyzing the best-known quantum learning algorithms, as well as proving black-box lower bounds for cloning and learning given state preparation oracles. Our random circuit-based constructions provide concrete instantiations of quantum cryptographic primitives whose security do not depend on the existence of one-way functions. The use of random circuits in our constructions also opens the door to {NISQ-friendly quantum cryptography}. We discuss noise tolerant versions of our OWSG and digital signature constructions which can potentially be implementable on noisy quantum computers connected by a quantum network. On the other hand, they are still secure against {noiseless} quantum adversaries, raising the intriguing possibility of a useful implementation of an end-to-end cryptographic protocol on near-term quantum computers. Finally, our explorations suggest that the rich interconnections between learning theory and cryptography in classical theoretical computer science also extend to the quantum setting.

Unconditional Pseudorandomness Against Shallow Quantum Circuits

Authors: Soumik Ghosh, Sathyawageeswar Subramanian, and Wei Zhan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
Quantum computational pseudorandomness has emerged as a fundamental notion that spans connections to complexity theory, cryptography and fundamental physics. However, all known constructions of efficient quantum-secure pseudorandom objects rely on complexity theoretic assumptions. In this work, we establish the first unconditionally secure efficient pseudorandom constructions against shallow-depth quantum circuit classes. We prove that: - Any quantum state 2-design yields unconditional pseudorandomness against both QNC⁰ circuits with arbitrarily many ancillae and AC⁰∘QNC⁰ circuits with nearly linear ancillae. - Random phased subspace states, where the phases are picked using a 4-wise independent function, are unconditionally pseudoentangled against the above circuit classes. - Any unitary 2-design yields unconditionally secure parallel-query pseudorandom unitaries against geometrically local QNC⁰ adversaries, even with limited AC⁰ postprocessing. Our results stand in stark contrast to the standard guarantee of the 2-design property, which only ensures that they cannot be distinguished from Haar random ensembles using two copies or queries. Our work demonstrates that quantum computational pseudorandomness can be achieved unconditionally for natural classes of restricted adversaries, opening new directions in quantum complexity theory.

On Estimating the Quantum 𝓁_α Distance

Authors: Yupan Liu and Qisheng Wang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We study the computational complexity of estimating the quantum 𝓁_α distance T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁), defined via the Schatten α-norm ‖A‖_α := tr(|A|^α)^{1/α}, given poly(n)-size state-preparation circuits of n-qubit quantum states ρ₀ and ρ₁. This quantity serves as a lower bound on the trace distance for α > 1. For any constant α > 1, we develop an efficient rank-independent quantum estimator for T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁) with time complexity poly(n), achieving an exponential speedup over the prior best results of exp(n) due to Wang, Guan, Liu, Zhang, and Ying (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 2024). Our improvement leverages efficiently computable uniform polynomial approximations of signed positive power functions within quantum singular value transformation, thereby eliminating the dependence on the rank of the states. Our quantum algorithm reveals a dichotomy in the computational complexity of the Quantum State Distinguishability Problem with Schatten α-norm (QSD_α), which involves deciding whether T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁) is at least 2/5 or at most 1/5. This dichotomy arises between the cases of constant α > 1 and α = 1: - For any 1+Ω(1) ≤ α ≤ O(1), QSD_α is BQP-complete. - For any 1 ≤ α ≤ 1+1/n, QSD_α is QSZK-complete, implying that no efficient quantum estimator for T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁) exists unless BQP = QSZK. The hardness results follow from reductions based on new rank-dependent inequalities for the quantum 𝓁_α distance with 1 ≤ α ≤ ∞, which are of independent interest.

Barendregt’s Theory of the λ-Calculus, Refreshed and Formalized

Authors: Adrienne Lancelot, Beniamino Accattoli, and Maxime Vemclefs

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 352, 16th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2025)

Abstract
Barendregt’s book on the untyped λ-calculus refines the inconsistent view of β-divergence as representation of the undefined via the key concept of head reduction. In this paper, we put together recent revisitations of some key theorems laid out in Barendregt’s book, and we formalize them in the Abella proof assistant. Our work provides a compact and refreshed presentation of the core of the book. The formalization faithfully mimics pen-and-paper proofs. Two interesting aspects are the manipulation of contexts for the study of contextual equivalence and a formal alternative to the informal trick at work in Takahashi’s proof of the genericity lemma. As a by-product, we obtain an alternative definition of contextual equivalence that does not mention contexts.

MUSE: Designing Immersive Virtual Realities for Spaceflight UX Research

Authors: Noora Archer, Pasquale Castellano, and Aidan Cowley

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 130, Advancing Human-Computer Interaction for Space Exploration (SpaceCHI 2025)

Abstract
Virtual reality (VR) provides unique opportunities for assessing early spacecraft design and usability by employing human-centered narrative and scenario-driven design methods. This paper details a narrative-focused VR simulation of a speculative spaceflight scenario, emphasizing narrative techniques for enhancing user immersion and user testing in evaluating operational usability aspects inside a spacecraft capsule. We designed a Modular User-centric Spaceflight Experience (MUSE) including a spacecraft capsule design and virtual mission scenario based on the findings and suggestions in Human Inspirator Co-Engineering (HICE) study. Results from user testing with MUSE underline the effectiveness and opportunities of narrative scenarios in early UX- evaluations in improving experience flow, operational understanding and user engagement. At the same time there remains several questions in defining best methodology to measure users insight and action motivation born from narrative immersion with the VR- experience.

NEREUS: An Assistive Decision Support System for Real-Time, Adaptive Route Guidance in Extravehicular Navigation Activities on the Lunar Surface

Authors: Jasmine Q. Wu, Andrew J. Hwang, and Matthew J. Bietz

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 130, Advancing Human-Computer Interaction for Space Exploration (SpaceCHI 2025)

Abstract
Extravehicular Activity (EVA) is one of the most complex operational endeavors during human lunar exploration. A key aspect of successful operations involves adapting procedures to address unexpected hazards on the lunar surface. Current route mapping systems rely heavily on static navigation planning around craters, high elevations, and extreme weather conditions to accomplish pre-defined mission objectives. However, the high-resolution data necessary for reliable route mapping is often unavailable. To address this challenge, we have designed NEREUS, a Decision Support System (DSS) that helps EVA operators on the ground respond to anomalies faster by simulating multiple alternative routes in parallel and visualizing trade-offs in consumable resources, speed, and safety as well as impact on overall mission timeline. The system offloads computationally intensive tasks like calculating the impact of evolving hazard data, allowing operators to focus on higher-level decision-making.
