Non-Wellfounded Derivations for Intersection Subtyping with Fixpoints

Authors: Olivier Laurent and Jui-Hsuan Wu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 378, 11th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2026)

Abstract
Subtyping is a key ingredient of many intersection type systems. In the case of the BCD system, B. Pierce gave a transitivity-free presentation of subtyping. This provides better structural properties for the analysis of this relation and leads to a simple decision algorithm. We generalize this transitivity-free approach to a general class of extensions of BCD allowing to impose some pre-order as well as some fixpoint equations on atoms. This includes in particular the case of various intersection type systems compatible with η-equality (Scott, Park, etc.). Proving the equivalence between the transitivity-free systems and their BCD-style presentation is addressed by means of cut-elimination techniques from proof theory. Due to the presence of fixpoints, we are led to introduce non-wellfounded derivations. In the context of the structural analysis of intersection subtyping, this happens to be the first use of infinitary derivations.

The Logic of Intersection Subtyping

Authors: Olivier Laurent

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 380, 41st Annual Symposium on Logic in Computer Science (LICS 2026)

Abstract
The subtyping relation of programming languages can be analysed as an entailment relation by means of proof theory. We are interested in two main families of systems: intersection types and polymorphic subtyping. They share the fact that implication has some distributivity property: over intersection in the first case and over universal quantification in the second one. We introduce a restriction of the second-order (full) Lambek calculus which is stable under cut-elimination and conservatively extends these two subtyping relations. This new system IS is an intuitionistic non-commutative linear sequent calculus which provides a natural logical setting for the study of subtyping relations. We recover sequent calculi from the literature (as well as new variants) as restrictions of IS (thanks to the proof-theoretical analysis of the system: admissible rules, invertibility, focusing, etc.), so that IS appears as a unifying logic for subtyping. We also develop translations relating IS with relevant logic, the (unconstrained) Lambek calculus or cyclic linear logic.

Computational Generation of Substrate-Specific Molecular Cages

Authors: Noé Demange, Yann Strozecki, and Sandrine Vial

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 371, 24th International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2026)

Abstract
In this paper, we propose a method to build molecular cages designed to capture a specific substrate. We model a cage as a graph of atoms with coordinates in space, and several constraints on their edges (degree, length and angle). We use a simple method to place binding patterns which are able to interact with certain parts of the substrate. We then propose an algorithm which considers all possible ways of connecting these binding patterns and try to construct the smallest possible molecular paths realizing these connections. We investigate many variants of our method in order to obtain the most efficient algorithm, able to build cages of more than a hundred atoms.

Hardness Results on Characteristics for Elastic-Degenerate Strings

Authors: Dominik Köppl and Jannik Olbrich

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 369, 37th Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM 2026)

Abstract
Generalizations of plain strings have been proposed as a compact way to represent a collection of nearly identical sequences or to express uncertainty at specific text positions by enumerating all possibilities. While a plain string stores a character at each of its positions, generalizations consider a set of characters (indeterminate strings), a set of strings of equal length (generalized degenerate strings, or shortly GD strings), or a set of strings of arbitrary lengths (elastic-degenerate strings, or shortly ED strings). These generalizations are of importance to compactly represent such type of data, and find applications in bioinformatics for representing and maintaining a set of genetic sequences of the same taxonomy or a multiple sequence alignment. To be of use, attention has been drawn to answering various query types such as pattern matching or measuring similarity of ED strings by generalizing techniques known to plain strings. However, for some types of queries, it has been shown that a generalization of a polynomial-time solvable query on classic strings becomes NP-hard on ED strings, e.g. [Russo et al., 2022]. In that light, we wonder about other types of queries that are of particular interest to bioinformatics: unique substrings, absent words, anti-powers, longest previous factors, and Lempel-Ziv-like compression schemes. While we obtain a polynomial time algorithm for a variation of longest previous factors, we show that all other problems are NP-hard to compute, some of them even under the restriction that the input can be modeled as an indeterminate or GD string.

SwiftQueue: Optimizing Low-Latency Applications with Swift Packet Queuing

Authors: Siddhant Ray, Xi Jiang, Jack Luo, Nick Feamster, and Junchen Jiang

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 139, 1st New Ideas in Networked Systems (NINeS 2026)

Abstract
Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput (L4S), as an emerging router-queue management technique, has seen steady deployment in the industry. An L4S-enabled router assigns each packet to the queue based on the packet header marking. Currently, L4S employs per-flow queue selection, i.e., all packets of a flow are marked the same way and thus use the same queues, even though each packet is marked separately. However, this may hurt tail latency and latency-sensitive applications because transient congestion and queue buildups may only affect a fraction of packets in a flow. We present SwiftQueue, a new L4S queue-selection strategy in which a sender uses a novel per-packet latency predictor to pinpoint which packets likely have latency spikes or drops. The insight is that many packet-level latency variations result from complex interactions among recent packets at shared router queues. Yet, these intricate packet-level latency patterns are hard to learn efficiently by traditional models. Instead, SwiftQueue uses a custom Transformer, which is well-studied for its expressiveness on sequential patterns, to predict the next packet’s latency based on the latencies of recently received ACKs. Based on the predicted latency of each outgoing packet, SwiftQueue’s sender dynamically marks the L4S packet header to assign packets to potentially different queues, even within the same flow. Using real network traces, we show that SwiftQueue is 45-65% more accurate in predicting latency and its variations than state-of-art methods. Based on its latency prediction, SwiftQueue reduces the tail latency for L4S-enabled flows by 36-45%, compared with the existing L4S queue-selection method.

Five Blind Men and the Internet: Towards an Understanding of Internet Traffic

Authors: Ege Cem Kirci, Ayush Mishra, and Laurent Vanbever

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 139, 1st New Ideas in Networked Systems (NINeS 2026)

Abstract
Our current view of traffic on the Internet - the world’s largest and most pervasive network - comes from a variety of perspectives, each with its own blind spots and biases. In this paper, we make the case for using publicly available Internet exchange point (IXP) statistics as a complementary vantage point. While IXP data has its own limitations, it is fine-grained, accessible, and independently verifiable - offering a distinct perspective on Internet usage patterns. We present results from a two-year study (2023-2024) of 472 IXPs worldwide, capturing approximately 300 Tbps of peak daily aggregate traffic by late 2024. Over this period, aggregate IXP traffic increased by 49.2% (24.5% annualized), with regionally distinct diurnal patterns and event-driven anomalies. These results provide an accessible framework for researchers and operators to study the Internet’s evolving ecosystem from an IXP-based perspective, and lay the groundwork for systematic, global-scale detection of network anomalies and outages.

Generalised Quantifiers Based on Rabin-Mostowski Index

Authors: Denis Kuperberg, Damian Niwiński, Paweł Parys, and Michał Skrzypczak

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
In this work we introduce new generalised quantifiers which allow us to express the Rabin-Mostowski index of automata. Our main results study expressive power and decidability of the monadic second-order (MSO) logic extended with these quantifiers. We study these problems in the realm of both ω-words and infinite trees. As it turns out, the pictures in these two cases are very different. In the case of ω-words the new quantifiers can be effectively expressed in pure MSO logic. In contrast, in the case of infinite trees, addition of these quantifiers leads to an undecidable formalism. To realise index-quantifier elimination, we consider the extension of MSO by game quantifiers. As a tool, we provide a specific quantifier-elimination procedure for them. Moreover, we introduce a novel construction of transducers realising strategies in ω-regular games with monadic parameters.

A Uniform Cut-Elimination Theorem for Linear Logics with Fixed Points and Super Exponentials

Authors: Alexis Saurin and Esaïe Bauer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
In the realm of light logics deriving from linear logic, a number of variants of exponential rules have been investigated. The profusion of such proof systems induces the need for cut-elimination theorems for each logic, the proofs of which may be redundant. A number of approaches in proof theory have been adopted to cope with this need. In the present paper, we consider this issue from the point of view of enhancing linear logic with least and greatest fixed-points and considering such a variety of exponential connectives. Our main contribution is to provide a uniform cut-elimination theorem for a parametrized system with fixed-points by combining two approaches: cut-elimination proofs by reduction (or translation) to another system and the identification of sufficient conditions for cut-elimination. More precisely, we examine a broad range of systems, taking inspiration from Nigam and Miller’s subexponentials and from the first author and Laurent’s super exponentials. Our work is motivated, on the one hand, by Baillot’s work on light logics with recursive types and on the other hand by our recent work on the proof theory of the modal μ-calculus.

The Agafonov and Schnorr-Stimm Theorems for Probabilistic Automata

Authors: Laurent Bienvenu, Hugo Gimbert, and Subin Pulari

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 360, 45th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2025)

Abstract
For a fixed alphabet A, an infinite sequence X is said to be normal if every word w over A appears in X with the same frequency as any other word of the same length. A classical result of Agafonov (1966) relates normality to finite automata as follows: a sequence X is normal if and only if any subsequence of X selected by a finite automaton is itself normal. Another theorem of Schnorr and Stimm (1972) gives an alternative characterization: a sequence X is normal if and only if no gambler can win large amounts of money by betting on the sequence X using a strategy that can be described by a finite automaton. Both of these theorems are established in the setting of deterministic finite automata. This raises the question as to whether they can be extended to the setting of probabilistic finite automata. In the case of the Agafonov theorem, a partial positive answer was given by Léchine et al. (MFCS 2024) in a restricted case of probabilistic automata with rational transition probabilities. In this paper, we settle the full conjecture by proving that both the Agafonov and the Schnorr-Stimm theorems hold true for arbitrary probabilistic automata. Specifically, we show that a sequence X is normal if and only if any probabilistic automaton selects a normal subsequence of X with probability 1 and also show that a sequence X is normal if and only if any probabilistic finite-state gambler fails to win on X with probability 1.

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
Constrained pathfinding is a classic yet challenging network optimization problem with broad applicability across many real-world domains. The Resource-Constrained Shortest Path (RCSP) problem focuses on finding cost-optimal paths that satisfy multiple resource constraints. In this paper, we propose a novel heuristic-guided search framework that accelerates constrained search in large-scale networks, including those with negative costs and resources, by leveraging efficient queuing and pruning strategies. Experimental results on real-world benchmark maps show that our framework achieves up to two orders of magnitude speedup over state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its effectiveness in solving challenging RCSP instances within limited time.

Fast Computation of k-Runs, Parameterized Squares, and Other Generalised Squares

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
A k-mismatch square is a string of the form XY where X and Y are two equal-length strings that have at most k mismatches. Kolpakov and Kucherov [Theor. Comput. Sci., 2003] defined two notions of k-mismatch repeats, called k-repetitions and k-runs, each representing a sequence of consecutive k-mismatch squares of equal length. They proposed algorithms for computing k-repetitions and k-runs working in 𝒪(nklog k+output) time for a string of length n over an integer alphabet, where output is the number of the reported repeats. We show that output = 𝒪(nk log k), both in case of k-repetitions and k-runs, which implies that the complexity of their algorithms is actually 𝒪(nk log k). We apply this result to computing parameterized squares. A parameterized square is a string of the form XY such that X and Y parameterized-match, i.e., there exists a bijection f on the alphabet such that f(X) = Y. Two parameterized squares XY and X'Y' are equivalent if they parameterized match. Recently Hamai et al. [SPIRE 2024] showed that a string of length n over an alphabet of size σ contains less than nσ non-equivalent parameterized squares, improving an earlier bound by Kociumaka et al. [Theor. Comput. Sci., 2016]. We apply our bound for k-mismatch repeats to propose an algorithm that reports all non-equivalent parameterized squares in 𝒪(nσ log σ) time. We also show that the number of non-equivalent parameterized squares can be computed in 𝒪(n log n) time. This last algorithm applies to squares under any substring compatible equivalence relation and also to counting squares that are distinct as strings. In particular, this improves upon the 𝒪(nσ)-time algorithm of Gawrychowski et al. [CPM 2023] for counting order-preserving squares that are distinct as strings if σ = ω(log n).

On the Effectiveness of Interpreter-Guided Compiler Testing

Authors: Federico Lochbaum and Guillermo Polito

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 134, Companion Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on the Art, Science, and Engineering of Programming (Programming 2025)

Abstract
Guaranteeing that a compiler behaves correctly is a complex task often approached through test generation and fuzzing. Compiler test generation must not only ensure that a compiler generates code that does not break, but also that it implements the programming language semantics. Recently, interpreter-guided test generation has been proposed to test JIT compilers: Concolic-execution on the interpreter yields test cases for the language semantics which are then validated between differential testing of the interpreter and compiler. In previous work, this solution has been shown to find interpreter/compiler differences. However, little has been said about the effectiveness and the solution limits. In this paper we study the behavior of this technique, to shed light on future improvements and research. We experiment with this technique on the JIT compiler for the Pharo programming language, on two different backends: ARMv7 and x86. We explore how effective the solution is in terms of compiler coverage and its limitations, and we discuss how future research can overcome them. Moreover, we investigate how this technique combined with random constraint mutations increases backend compiler coverage.

Toward a Typed Intermediate Language for R (Extended Abstract)

Authors: Mickaël Laurent, Jakob Hain, Filip Krikava, Sebastián Krynski, and Jan Vitek

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 134, Companion Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on the Art, Science, and Engineering of Programming (Programming 2025)

Abstract
Compilers for dynamic languages often rely on intermediate representations with explicit type annotations to facilitate writing program transformations. This paper documents the design of a new typed intermediate representation for a just-in-time compiler for the R programming language called FIŘ. Type annotations, in FIŘ, capture properties such as sharing, the potential for effects, and compiler speculations. In this extended abstract, we focus on the sharing properties that may be used to optimize away some copies of values.
